Re: Talking Point: What We'd Like To See In Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo Switch

Joenen

Wow, what a tall wishlist. I agree it'd be nice if there was a substantive amount of "new" content but entire adventure modes and multiple sets of game mechanics? You guys are pretty big dreamers.

that being said, I'd love to see boss battle mode make it in. Instead of spending resources to merge 3DS and Wii U features. And as unlikely as it is, I'd like a melee-style campaign too ( subspace emmissary is likely not happening again)..

Re: Review: Chase: Cold Case Investigations - Distant Memories (3DS eShop)

Joenen

I'll probably pick this up after finishing AA Spirit of Justice, which is shaping up to have one killer final case! Thoroughly pleased with the last AA in general. Not quite as challenging as the original installments, but much more narratively engaging than Dual Destinies for sure.

I like Mystery type narratives so I'll give this a go.

Re: Review: Zero Time Dilemma (3DS)

Joenen

It would be nice if they are punting the resolution off to a 4th game but at the same time I'd feel strung along. VLR was great at setting up the tone for this game, but this one both as a standalone game and a sequel has writing issues. It's not so bad that it's not worth it as a fan, to see the conclusion, but you may be right that it is better to just play it going in blind and not having any expectations.

Re: Review: Zero Time Dilemma (3DS)

Joenen

999 is the best in that it stands alone quite well as a narrative. It has the issue of a rather slow way of skipping and VLR refines the gameplay well, and is good at building hype for the 3rd game.

This last installment however just doesn't quite sit well with me from a plot perspective. The game goes in directions that are certainly unpredictable, but I can't say I thought they were interesting or good. Mostly convoluted and honestly not a satisfying end compared to the other two.

That's of course in the eye of the beholder. The entire ride up until the ending sequences was solid and if you've played the first two you'll definitely have to grab this one, (unlike me you might like how it ends up?) but I wanted to weigh in here in agreement with the earlier sentiment about it being the weakest game in the series.

Also it's not friendly to the colorblind haha. Internet is your friend.

Re: Rumour: Concept Art Reveals the Final Evolutions of the Alola Starters

Joenen

Wow, if true, Rowlett really is the best of the 3. I love it's design as a first stage but assumed it'd lose it for some in-cute design later, but surprise surprise it actually handles a cute to cool transition quite nicely Meanwhile Poplio is a wonderfully fun design that I really enjoy and thought that aspect would carry over to its final evolution but boy is that last one unexpected. From a jolly clown performer seal to a Mermaid-type character? Really jarring. And While litten struck me as rather plain, but with potential, to become yet another bipedal fire fighting is grown inducing.

Ultimately I hope these aren't true but if so, at least Rowlett saves the day.

Re: Nintendo is Making a Subtle Shift in Company Focus

Joenen

It's a good thing. They've got a wonderful cast of characters and the market is starved for some merchandise for them as Amiibo has clearly shown. I really hope the movies and theme park turns out well for them. I've always wanted these to happen and as a fan I hope they can grow and nurture a new younger generation of fans.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Fit Into the Zelda Timeline?

Joenen

Wasn't it confirmed somewhere that Link is right handed in this game just because we're controlling him primarily with our own right hand?

Wouldn't put so much stock in his dominant hand since the team is clearly more focused on what they want to do with this specific game as opposed to the grander details and making everything match-up perfectly. SS itself still has weird details and ignores the 3 goddesses entirely beyond having dragons bear their names.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Fit Into the Zelda Timeline?

Joenen

They've had "advanced tech" since Skyward Sword which also resembles thsi game's artstyle so I don't think we can use just artstyle as a defining factor. Remember, this is more or less an anniversary-type project with a lot of callbacks to the original games and its not weird if they celebrate other games too, like WW with Koroks and Twilight Princess with Wolf Link.

Hence none of the evidence conclusively points to any of the timelines so far. I just find the WW line the least logical argument to make at this point. If this game is really that far into the future then you can place it in any timeline you want to.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Fit Into the Zelda Timeline?

Joenen

The post Spirit Tracks theory doesn't sit well with me because typically post WW games use the toon link character, never a Teenage / adult link. Furthermore it runs counter to the entirety of the progression of the WW timeline. None of what we saw is truly Wind Waker exclusive when all those elements can easily exist in other timelines just fine. Nothing really justifies the "they must have gone back, unplugged the stone from Ganon's head and stuffed it into a new pedestal" angle. Like, if Nintendo comes out and says "its WW timeline" then that's the logic we have to jump to and wait for the game to explain, however at this stage the WW theory just seems ludicrous to me. Going to a new Hyrule only to return to the old one just doesn't fit in that story's progression from a logical standpoint, at least, in my opinion. You can contrive it into /any/ timeline by using logic derived from "so much time passed".

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Fit Into the Zelda Timeline?

Joenen

I haven't actually played other games in the post wind waker timeline but my understanding of it is that they're going to establish a new hyrule. Hence I don't think it makes sense for this to be in the post wind waker part of the timeline. Why go back to what's clearly the old hyrule?

Then there's the pre-wind waker part. I take issue with this becaue we know that before hyrule is flooded, hyrule castle is sealed away in time and the master sword keeps it so. There's no opportunity for any future hero to pick up the master sword and Ganon is not defeated until the events of wind waker.

So I think this isn't the wind waker timeline, but a timeline late enough for the technology to make sense and where the Kokiri have evolved as a result of events separate from the flood.

Re: E3 2016: Check Out the Paper Mario: Color Splash E3 Trailer

Joenen

Sticker Star's gameplay was honestly not fun. There's no reason to fight enemies there and it looks like there's no reason to fight enemies here too. Getting their stickers, Er, cards looks useless since they run from bosses and why waste your color on fighting when interacting with the environment looks more fun/important.

The battle system looks interesting to a point but I much more enjoyed interactions with fantasy Mario powers than random real life items that just take you out of the Mario universe and act Wacky for the sake of it.

Re: Meet The Edgy And Mature Fan-Made Pokémon Game That Aims To "Fix" The Series

Joenen

The problem with pokemon isn't necessarily the lack of a mature "tone" but rather just a lack of depth in general in regards to plot and characters. Tastes vary as to how much is really necessary in the first place though.

This is a bit extreme though. Part of the story is literally set in "hell".Pokemon are likened to demons and there's an angsty feel that feels weird because we've no reason to relate to it other than "this must be how teens talk nowadays". Having a silent MC at least doesn't force a perspective on you that you can't relate to. The issue is how much of yourself you can really put into a silent protag.

Also the choice in starter mons is .... disappointing to say the least. Interesting, yet disappointing. There's a reason these weren't heavily marketed, they aren't meant to fill the starter roll. Plus it feels like there's overlap in the choice because two of the three mon are found in the Hoenn desert...

It's certainly different and interesting to the point. However the approach being taken has problems too.

I'll keep an eye on it though until I feel its too edgy to go on.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Was Wrong To Turn Its Back On The Wii Remote

Joenen

I think it's fair to say that motion controls were generally not that well recoeved due to their implementation being largely lackluster, with the few exceptions listed here in the article.

That being said I agree that those exceptions are great games and the idea of having more like them honestly probably should have been the focus of a new HD Wii Tu pr whatever you'd call it. That being said I find it hard to imagine Nintendo sticking to just one console brand like Sony and Microsoft do.

I do think they could've explored motion controls more however with the Wii u. Wii was a huge success and captured people that don't normally game, but the Wii u sort of ignored appealing to them I think. I really did love Skyward Sowrd's motion controls barring controlling that beetle item.

I do like the game pad though. There are games like splatoon, XCX, Batman, and more that made me really appreciate having a mobile screen in hand. I just think the concept is better suited to an NX-type hybrid system. Nintendo should've actually waited with this game pad idea. They jumped onto the train too early ironically. its so very Nintendo to try and forge new ground, but they missed the timing for the tablet market and shoud've recognized that.

Hindsight is 20/20 but I hope they don't just throw out their past successes.

Re: Zero Time Dilemma Launches on 28th June in North America and Europe

Joenen

wow, so close already! Nice.

That being said wow, that cover image is really almost off-putting. I know it's a mature game but that kinda feels "mature" just for the sake of it. I got into the series for its mystery and story telling, not shock factor. (part of the story telling sure but not the main draw).

Well either way I need to know how it all ends, I just hope it doesn't try to be too, what, "edgy?". Or I guess just "tryhard".

Re: Video: Feast Your Eyes On Star Fox Zero's Opening Story Cinematic

Joenen

I don't understand the fuss. They're starting over from the beginning. We'll see if it puts a decent spin on it when it comes out.

The 3DS remastering doesn't have anything to do with how the series is going to play out going forward.

This title on the other hand, does. Its quite possible that the ending takes down a different scenario.

Let's just wait a bit longer and we'll know for sure.

Re: Paper Mario Colour Splash Coming to Wii U

Joenen

Alright, after giving it another watch, I'm trying to look at the positives.

The game is pretty. And I can see myself liking splashing color everywhere to see what kind of things I get from it. The various color-related effects seems like it could be creative and fun to experience. If they can just include more hub-towns and interesting characters, it could be interesting.

Sticker Star was missing valuable character interactions I felt. If they can at least give us interesting towns and places to visit with assorted stories unfolding there, it could be nice. It might look like sticker star, but its possible to look like sticker star and deliver a better experience.

The battle system though, if there's more depth to it it could be fun, but the super flalshy random appliance attacks are jarring and I don't particularly enjoy them. Compare to the special attacks in other games where you're using star power, the appliance attacks are too out of place. And there were so darn many of them.

But I think its possible to be optimistic about this. Just really...really cautiously.

Re: Meet The Mythical Pokémon Created By Humans 500 Years Ago

Joenen

@KTT

Oh definately. This was just a "play it safe" decision.

That being said, from what I hear and have seen of XY&Z series, it's not what I'd call "bad". The issue is that it's "stale" and doesn't try to keep up with the older audiences.

Which is technically fine. The show points you to the games, and if you like those, you typically stay tuned for future installments. Regardless of the show (like me and my brothers do now).

XYZ makes some nice light-hearted and easy to follow practice for my Japanese, and I think the show is doing a decent job of trying to please the target audience. While I'm no longer its biggest fan, I hope it continues long enough for my kids to enjoy it, God-willing I get that far : P

Re: Editorial: Game Localisation Isn't Just About Preserving The 'Pure' Original

Joenen

To me it seems apparent that Nintendo wants to expand its user base for Fire Emblem, making it accessible even to kids. It was apparent from even difficulty settings being adjustable to super easy levels.

also the article makes a fair point that every localization will differ from the original content by virtue of language barriers. There's no way to get original content without playing the Japanese version in the first place. The nuances and speech patterns are different experiences entirely of often times.

Some decisions are definitely questionable and worth voicing concern over, but others seem rather apparent and make sense to me on the face. This change was merely for making the game more accessible for younger audiences. Expanding the fan base etc.
