It's hard to say whether Iwata's in really big trouble or not. Even if the Wii U ends up not selling very well, even after all its biggest games come out, I don't think that's necessarily grounds for dismissing Iwata. Under Iwata, Nintendo has seen huge successes in the DS, Wii, and 3DS; if the Wii U never manages to gain ground, it would be the first big failure in recent memory, which means it would be the exception, not the rule. Nintendo has made it clear that they are changing up their business strategies in response to their current situation, so I think it's best to wait and see how well these strategies work before getting rid of Iwata.
I never considered the business side of this matter before. Personally, I'm fine with having GBA VC games on either Wii U or 3DS, but if putting them on Wii U can help it out, then I'm definitely in support of that.
I lean more towards playing console VC games on the TV, as I feel that's how they were meant to be played, but I'd like to play handheld VC games on the Gamepad, as I feel that's how they were meant to be played.
I'm not sure what to think of this new trailer. I feel like it didn't really show off much gameplay; it just showed some consequences of the player's actions, not what the player actually did to trigger those consequences, which is what I personally am more interested in knowing right now.
It's entirely plausible that indies won't be as big of a thing a few years down the road as both gamers and current indie developers get their fill of what indie games tend to offer, meaning gamers will buy fewer indie games and developers will make fewer indie games. But considering that it's relatively easy and inexpensive to make such games, I think they'll still have a significant presence; just not as significant of a presence as they have right now.
I think the lack of multiplayer will only be significant if Nintendo decides to release a lot of more multiplayer-oriented games in the future. If they mostly release single player games, it shouldn't be too big of an issue. And the way I see it, single player only is still better than no GBA games at all.
I'm not normally a fan of games like these, but this one sounds interesting. I need to see more of the game to be sure, though; the video seemed a little bare-bones to me.
I do think it would be cool to see Pac-Man duke it out with Mario, Sonic, and Megaman, but I can't say I'm a big enough fan of Pac-Man to be excited about his potential inclusion in the game. I'd love to see Klonoa and Hewpoe, as I feel they could do with some more recognition in the West, but I can't really see how they could fight. Klonoa's only ability, to my knowledge anyway, is to fire wind bullets. But I've only played the first game in the series, so maybe he gets more abilities in the other games.
While I can't exactly call myself a big Metroid fan, I do agree that the Wii U could certainly benefit from a game of that sort. The Wii U does have at least one well-received (albeit not particularly well-selling) darker game in ZombiU, though that is definitely not the same as a big first-party title. I think the main concern is trying to find something new to do with the series while still making a game similar enough to older Metroid titles to please the people who didn't like how different Other M was, and I imagine that's easier said than done at this point.
I hadn't noticed before, but you can actually see the five plazas that surround Prism Tower in Lumiose City; the monuments even have the right colors. I love that attention to detail.
Again they finish the game while I'm sleeping; I swear I must be cursed to miss out on seeing most of the good parts live. Oh well, I'll be watching TPP Emerald; Crystal started out a bit weak because of the trolls and the greater linearity of Johto, but it proved to have its own unique challenges. A week-long break at this point makes sense to me.
I'm not a fan of oversexualization like this, but I'm not about to try and stop it from existing. There's an audience for everything, including this kind of thing; rather than deny an audience what they want, I think it's best to take extra measures to make sure those who would be offended by it have as little exposure to it as possible. Obviously that's a lot easier said than done, but I think that's the closest to a win-win we can get in this situation.
A few weeks isn't too big of a deal to me, especially when the extra time is being used to perfect the experience, and it sounds like they've really been pushing themselves with development of this game. I'm going to feel really bad for these guys if the game doesn't do too well.
I'm not sure about crossplay, but I agree with the two steps outlined in this article. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is working on those things, but is trying to give them a 'Nintendo' spin so as not to directly copy Sony or anyone else for that matter. At least I hope that's what they're doing.
I agree that local multiplayer is more fun than online multiplayer could ever be, and I would hate to see Nintendo go with an 'online only' approach. I actually plan to play a bit of Super Mario 3D World with my family in a couple of weeks when I'm on my spring break.
While I don't think it would hurt for Nintendo to have more games with online multiplayer, I do think they should be cautious about which games will and won't have it. While there are some people who would choose local over online in a heartbeat, I think there are a lot more who, if given the choice, would choose online every time simply because of its convenience; even if local and online were options, they would get so used to the convenience of online play that they would never bother to invite friends or family over to play together locally, even if they found that more fun than online play. I believe there are some games for which online multiplayer is a necessity, like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., but other games for which local should be the only option, such as 3D World, so gamers will actually get to experience the amazing local multiplayer and not dismiss it in favor of the more convenient but probably less fun option. In short, I say online and local for some games, local only for others.
This won't make any real difference in terms of sales and drawing third parties to the Wii U, but at least it sounds like decent news for the few who actually plan to get this game on the Wii U.
Interesting list, especially the top five; I expected DK or Zelda to be #2. I really need to get Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 one of these days; if only money weren't such an issue for me. Although I felt #1 was predictable, I agree with its rank completely.
Really in-depth article; it made for a good read. I didn't realize there was a horde for each stat; that's going to make my life a little easier in the future.
I definitely like the approach Nintendo took with this game. There's a decent bit to do in the free version, especially with the online multiplayer, so people can safely get an idea of what the game is like and decide if they want to pay to get more, like I intend to do next week when my classes end.
Here we go again. Iwata already said Nintendo plans to make more use of the Game Pad this year. If that turns out to be the case, the matter of whether or not the Game Pad is a waste will mostly be resolved (aside from the traditionalists who hate "gimmicks"); if not, then Nintendo can consider getting rid of it.
Not suprising; personally, I don't really care about another Batman: Arkham (insert word here) game, but I do see how this news is more than a little annoying for others.
They would beat the game while I was asleep; it must have been about 3 or 4 a.m. where I am. At least I got to see the winning run on YouTube this morning. I can hardly wait for the follow-up; I might even participate this time. I wonder what the next "Lord Helix" will be?
I do think this could become a big thing if it gets fine-tuned a bit; right now I think it's a little too rough around the edges to be popular for more than a few weeks, maybe a few months at the most. I would like to see more things like Twitch Plays Pokémon, though; I got way more pleasure from seeing Lord Helix's epic sweep of Bruno than I should have.
At first I was surprised to see Nintendo Land in the bottom half, but then I remembered Rayman Legends, DKCTF, and Wind Waker HD. I wonder if New Super Luigi U will make the top 10; it is technically a retail game.
As a very cynical person, I loved almost everything Cranky had to say, especially the 'cheap death' bit. I'd be tempted to actually make a Twitter account if Nintendo did this more often.
I've really been enjoying this game so far. I'm just about done with the free single-player stuff (though Mission 2, lvl 3 refuses to let me earn that gold star), and I'll probably buy the full version when I have just a bit more money on-hand. It's too bad I haven't had time to try out multiplayer yet; it sounds like fun.
I agree that a game doesn't necessarily have to be fancy and polished to be enjoyable; I do tend to enjoy such games more, but I'm fine with simpler projects, too.
I think the KO meter is a really interesting addition. I didn't see Bowser's and Mega Man's percentages, but I did see that black-red energy when Little Mac hit them, so they must have been at high percentages, which means the KO meter probably won't be overpowered, so that's good.
The best part for me was definitely the reveal of the Koopalings in Mario Kart 8; I think they fit perfectly with the game. Aside from that, Steel Diver: Sub Wars has my eye; finally, an FPS that looks like its about strategy and not just about going "Yay! I have guns! I can shoot people!" I'm also quite curious about Rusty's Real Deal Baseball; I think it has a lot of potential, though I shouldn't set my expectations too high since it is Nintendo's first real attempt at a free-to-play game. And of course, Little Mac was a nice reveal; I'm liking what I've seen of him so far.
I like this idea. I think it's a really cool take on the concept of free-to-play gaming, and as a huge baseball fan, I'm fine with the game being related to baseball; I can't wait to try out the umpire mini-game.
Of course I'd have to leave for class in the middle of the Direct and miss out on seeing this live. . . . On the other hand, this is awesome news, so I guess it's okay.
I hope people are happy now, and realize they were being just a little impatient.
As for the content of the Direct, I'm glad we're getting info on Spring games; hopefully a fair few of them are for the Wii U, even if they're relatively small games, as the Wii U could do with a few more games in the coming months. My expectations aren't too high, but I am hopeful for at least a little good news.
