Re: Fortnite's Latest Trailer Is An Unsettling Realisation Of Its Crossover Ambitions

DJ-Knight

I'm pretty sure I'm the one user on NintendoLife that plays and enjoys Fortnite, lol.

With that said, the context for all these collabs being in this trailer is that Fortnite's content model revolves around big chapters with multiple seasons in them. Each of these collab characters starred in a different season this chapter. This trailer is for the end-of-chapter event where everybody fights the big bad of the chapter.

It's been years since Fortnite's done a big story event like this, and it's the first time they've brought back collab characters from earlier seasons for the end-of-chapter event, so it's got a lot of Fortnite fans excited, myself included.

No worries if it's not your cup of tea, but I figured I'd at least give a bit of context.

Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?

DJ-Knight

I've noticed that while Silksong bosses generally hit harder than Hollow Knight bosses, they're more telegraphed and consistent. Once I know their pattern, they aren't really a problem, whereas some Hollow Knight bosses are still hard even when I know their patterns because they have short telegraphs, have little delay between their attacks, or are gimmicky/inconsistent.

Essentially, Silksong bosses are tougher than Hollow Knight bosses for the first attempt or two when you don't know their patterns, as they deal a lot of damage very fast. Once you understand their moves, though, you can beat them more reliably than Hollow Knight bosses, as they have better telegraphs and openings. Without spoiling anything, there was a mini boss in Silksong that showed up for a rematch, and while it was tough when I fought it the first time, I basically did it hitless the second time around even though I hadn't gained any new upgrades.

I wouldn't say Silksong is necessarily easier or harder - its type of difficulty is just different. Effectively, it means the "easy" bosses are tougher in Silksong, while the "hard" bosses are tougher in Hollow Knight. Consequently, while I die more often to a boss on my first try in Silksong, I haven't gotten stuck on a boss for a while like I did in Hollow Knight.

Granted, I have not finished Silksong yet, but based on what I've encountered so far, that's my take on the difficulty.

Re: Opinion: Nintendo New York's Switch 2 Launch Event Felt Like Coming Home

DJ-Knight

My GameStop had a pretty fun midnight launch: they held a Smash Bros tournament and gave the top three players Eshop cards. The other participants got some freebies too - I placed forth and nabbed a nifty Nintendo 64 controller pin. Everyone paid for their Switch 2s in advance, so they had us line up outside and head in ten at a time to show them our receipt and receive our Switch 2s. We all cheered for people when they left the store with their Switch 2s in hand. It was a lot of fun.

I also brought my 3DS and got a StreetPass on it - I'm so glad I went!

Re: Here's Your First Look At Pokémon Scarlet And Violet On Switch 2

DJ-Knight

Stylization beats graphics any day. This upgrade shows that the lacking visuals of Scarlet and Violet really have little to do with the power of the Switch and are instead the result of Game Freak's lack of artistic direction in these games.

Scarlet and Violet were the first Pokémon games in a while I skipped, and I'm really hoping the next generation of games will rectify this issue.

Re: Fortnite Turns To The Dark Side With AI Darth Vader Voice, And Of Course It's Been Swearing

DJ-Knight

At the very least, they collaborated with the Jones estate to pull this off, and James Earl Jones did sign off his voice to be used in projects knowing it may be used for AI like this. And while there definitely was a small group of people who immediately tried to make Vader swear (and got attention because of it), the majority of clips I've seen have primarily been people having more innocent fun interacting with Vader and enjoying hearing him referring to skins from other franchises by name. They also have the AI disabled on any account with parental controls on, so they did take some counter measures.

That said, they definitely underestimated how creative people can be in making AI say some nasty things, and the moral implications of using someone's voice after their death to create a chatbot are iffy - even with their consent. It's certainty better than AI "art" that steals from artists without their consent, and they aren't using it as a substitute for an actor saying lines in a movie - they're using the AI to dynamically respond to players, which wouldn't be possible otherwise. However, they needed to take much greater precautions to ensure the AI could not be exploited in this manner. Even though they quickly patched it, the damage has already been done.
