Re: Luc Bernard Quits Videogame Development

Chipmunk777

Wow.. I'm surprised he let those morons get to him so much. It's a shame too, because he had some great, innovative ideas. And I was really interested in that castleroid game he was talking about with the cello-playing girl.... Does this mean he won't be creating the other chapters for EC either?

Re: Eternity's Child Now Available for Steam

Chipmunk777

I just played this game for about an hour, and I've got to say a 1/10 is absolute rubbish. I really enjoy this game. The charged shot/shotgun mechanic is really cool and fun to play with. Guiding the charged shot with the cursor is a really cool idea, and useful in the gameplay. I will now read through the destructoid review and give my take on each issue they discussed.

Unfortunately, the graphics only look good in screenshots.

I have no idea what they're talking about. The game looks fantastic, especially once you turn on some antialiasing! The backgrounds, the sprites, the shots. Maybe he has a piss-poor graphics card? The main sprite animation is kind of flash-esque, but it doesn't look bad. I'd go so far as to say that it looks great! It certainly does not warrant the comment: "In motion, the game looks as good as, if not worse than, most flash games you might find on Newgrounds"

Unless you feel like memorizing a bunch of proper nouns and abstract plot points the game throws at you in its first five minutes, then the story of Eternity's Child will be irrelevant at best, and nonexistent at worst

Haha..... Apparently these people don't like reading! The intro was MAYBE a minute long, and pretty interesting. Nothing to memorize, no "abstract plot points"... And anyway, it's a platforming game. What was the story in the first mario game? I had no idea the first time I played it! No clue the man was a plumber! There was no elaborate story telling in mario to explain to me that I'm searching for the princess. At any rate, how could know anything about the story of the game without finishing it? There are back-and-forths between Rose and Angel, and I'm only on the 5th level (out of 20) anyways so who's to say that the story doesn't develop more?

Let's talk about level design, or the complete lack of it on display in Eternity's Child. How the player is given essentially no direction as to where to go, but to move randomly eastward, hoping to bump into something of importance while making blind leaps of faith, praying to land on something to show that they're on the right track

This I have to agree with partially. Now, I wouldn't say there is a "complete lack of [level design] on display in Eternity's Child," but I did feel very confused as to where to go at some points during the game. But again, I've only played the first 5 levels, and I only had this problem at a few points thus far. The main problem I had was the "leaps of faith" he talks about.

Or that the player must kill every single flying enemy they see, because even if they manage to temporarily run away from them, even if they run all the way to the opposite side of the level, the enemies will eternally chase them, so that five minutes after escaping a horde of Evil Flying Robotic Heart Things, you rest for just a moment and, from out of nowhere, the Evil Flying Robotic Heart Things you'd forgotten about come from offscreen and kill you.

This is just stupid. Why would you not kill the flying heart things? They take one charged shot to kill, and almost always drop a heart. Also, these are the only enemies I have encountered that follow you around. The big, hard-to-kill flying guys you can run past, the guns that shoot at you don't follow you.

And speaking of combat, the shooting mechanics just don't feel right

Wrong again, it's as if they didn't even use the charged shot. That's probably because its use was explained in text at the beginning of the game! Anyway, for the guns that shoot at you, all you need to do is fire a charged shot and maneuver it with your cursor to kill them easily. The charged shot destroys all of their bullets, and if you just drag the shot onto the enemy, it dies quickly.

There is nothing good about this game

...

On to the next guy's review:

The problem is that it's difficult for the wrong reasons, most directly in terms of control

The game is hard, but I found it had nothing to do with the controls. Maybe I missed something..? I thought the controls were just fine. I had only one quarrel with them (which I will talk about at the end).

The charged shot is interesting because you can catch it with the cursor and then direct it around the screen to kill enemies. It's a cool idea that utterly fails in execution due to how precisely the cursor must be placed

I don't know what to say here, really. I found it easy to use the charged shot. And, I really only guided it when I was trying to kill mass amounts of the flying heart things. Most times I just used it as a shotgun (you can hold right click, and when it's fully charged hit left click and it fires like a shotgun. Or, you can fire the charged shot and then shoot it with another shot and it explodes).

Whatever you do, don't buy this game. In fact, don't even say its name, for that might give its already unholy form power.

Score: 1.0

Um, reading the second guy's review, it didn't sound like it warranted a 1/10. It sounded like he liked it a lot more than the first guy (he also sounded like he gave it more of a chance), but then at the end wanted to follow along with the first guy's low score.

My take on the game is this: It is fun, it is challenging, the levels are pretty well designed except for a few points where you have to just jump off and hope for the best. The artwork is great, the music is outstanding, the gameplay is not as loose as they make you think.

My only real problem with the game is the jump mechanic.

One: I would like more control of the jump itself. If I tap the jump button while running, I'd like to only jump a little bit, if I hold it I'd like to jump higher. What I described does occur in the game to an extent, but it only works when you're not running. This is not a problem, it does nothing to detract from the game. It's just something that I feel increases control in a platforming game. Those little precise jumps just make the game flow better.

Two: I have died a few times due to the fact that I tried to jump at the apex of a moving platform's route, and he just didn't jump! I assume it's because Angel was in the air for a split second or something when the platform started to move down again? I'm not sure, but that is mildly annoying.

But aside from that, I love this game. I'm sure the wiiware version will be better though, and I will of course buy that one too. And I would bet you that this is the best game you can buy for 5 bucks.

All in all, I'd give this game an 8/10.

Re: Mega Man Finally Out On Monday In USA

Chipmunk777

Wow! 3 great VC games, and probably a decent game or two on wiiware! I'm not interested in mega man since I have both the anniversary and the X collection on PS2 (so the control scheme is perfect), but it's still good news!

You know what would make this monday the best ever though? If Mega Man 9 came out on wiiware

Re: Ys Book I & II

Chipmunk777

@Mickeymac

Well if you do decide to pass on book I & II, and if Ys III is ever released on VC, you should check that one out. It's more interactive (check out some vids of that, you'll see). Also, there was a SNES port of Ys III so you might be able to find a rom to try it out, if you wanted to

Re: Ys Book I & II

Chipmunk777

It's $8. You could buy this or order take-out from a chinese restaurant. It's not a huge investment people!

BTW I love Ys I and II. Also Ys III is excellent, I hope that gets released in some fashion! I used to have the SNES cart of Ys III.... Can't remember what happened to it though

Re: Penny Arcade Adventures Too Big For WiiWare

Chipmunk777

I have this on my PC and it's awesome! Aside from it being funny (although you might not appreciate some of the comedy if you don't like penny arcade) the gameplay is actually really fun! I don't really care either way if it comes to wiiware or not, I'll just continue buying it for my PC.

@Mickeymac

Also, the game is only ~200MB. When you download the demo, that's the whole game. You just have to buy a registration key to unlock it

Re: USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2

Chipmunk777

@North99

Haha I agree, I bought that out of the blue last week, it's sooo addicting!

And to comment on this week, it's ok. I won't buy anything, not my cup of tea. I'm just looking forward to August, that should be a great month for VC! Star Parodier may be my first VC purchase since Pokemon Puzzle League

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Pong Toss

Chipmunk777

@Dazza

Well, hopefully this won't even make the list. But seeing as how SPOGS is now in the top 10, it's apparent that we just love buying crappy games. It will be interesting to see how well this game sells though. It's priced the same as SSR, and I've always held the belief that SSR's odd price (800 points) helped discourage people from buying it.

Re: Space Invaders Get Even - It's Payback Time!

Chipmunk777

Haha this looks so awesome! I imagine the nunchuk+wiimote controls will be quite intuitive.

And, I imagine the 100 seen in the video would be something like "over 100 levels of play." I speak no japanese, so this is merely speculation on my part

Re: Retro Styled Castlevania Coming To WiiWare?

Chipmunk777

Castlevania has been one of my favorite series, ever since I was like 5 years old playing the original at my aunt and uncle's house! I would love to see a new retro Castlevania game. Something similar to Castlevania III would be awesome.

This is exactly what I had hoped Mega Man 9 would do for other developers out there. Hopefully it will sell well enough to make them want to do it too.

Re: Most Popular WiiWare Games in America (16th July)

Chipmunk777

SSR should have been priced at 500 points. It definitely would have sold much better. I love the game personally, but the general public definitely would have felt better about buying the game if it didn't cost such an odd number of points.

However, I am in utter shock that SPOGS surpassed Toki Tori. wtf?

Re: E3 2008: Mega Man 9 First Impressions

Chipmunk777

It's funny that the guy thinks MM1 is harder than MM2, because I can soar through MM1, but in MM2 I have to struggle to beat one level!

Also, good to hear that the new game maintains that high level of difficulty! I'm super excited about this one

Re: E3 2008: Miyamoto Discusses Limited Storage Space On Wii

Chipmunk777

@mikejonesuk

I tried doing that once (my wii system memory has been full for at least 6 months now.), I wanted to move Sin and Punishment to my SD card because I was quite done playing it for the time being. I think it took, if memory serves correctly, at LEAST 30 minutes. No exaggeration, perhaps it took even longer. So, yeah, it is quite a hassle, especially for larger games.

The save data for VC and Wiiware games is saved seperately from the data file (it's saved on the wii still, but only in a 1-3 block save file). So, you can delete the game, but still have the save data if you redownload later.

I don't know about wiiware games with DLC because I haven't purchased any DLC for a game.

And I completely agree with you, it seems like a firmware update would not be that difficult to come up with. I imagine that the transfer rate between the wii system memory and SD card would still be rather slow... But perhaps we could be allowed the option to download directly to the SD card?

But, the thing I like about the VC/wiiware is that there is supposed to be no hassle! No scratched/smudged disks, no blowing into a cartridge, no searching around for that game you want to play. It's all just on your wii, all you have to do is click on it. That's what I don't like about the whole delete/redownload or SD transfer thing. Those two "solutions" take a ridiculous amount of time, and it kind of defeats the purpose of the VC for me. I could just as easily go on ebay and buy all the games I want! My SNES still works, my N64 still works, except I wouldn't be limited by storage space or by what Nintendo feels that I deserve to play this week.

And that is MY storage solution. Until nintendo decides that we're worthy of their great and holy power, until they decide they can wave their hand and fix our storage problem (because let's be honest, how hard could it really be?), I will not be purchasing anything from the VC/wiiware. In fact, I love how at their E3 press conference yesterday they failed to even mention the VC. They barely said a word about wiiware. So, of course, no word on a storage solution.

Also, that "Cammy" lady or whatever the hell her name was, was annoying as hell.

Re: Review: SPOGS Racing

Chipmunk777

Ugh......... this game is one spot behind toki tori... I bet by next week it will have passed it. I wish ppl were required to read the reviews on this site BEFORE they buy a game.

@Terranigma

I completely agree! Gunstar Heroes and Sin and Punishment are two of my favorite VC games, and I would have never even thought about buying them without vc-r! You guys do a great job, here!

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Chipmunk777

@stinssd

I agree. I got secret of evermore a few months ago on ebay for $10. I whipped out SMRPG, Illusion of Gaia, and Secret of mana the other day, and all those carts still works perfectly. What do I need VC for if all nintendo is going to give us is crap? I think I'll be boycotting the service until they stop screwing around with us. I can't stand the fluctuating # of releases per week, all the neo geo fighters, and most of all, the fact that they completely have disregarded the storage issue.

I wanted to give you my money, nintendo, I really did.

Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters

Chipmunk777

Boring! But, I don't think even if something good came out I'd want to buy it. Between the lack of storage space and the crap that has been released the past few weeks, I'm starting to feel like NoA doesn't care about us anymore! I don't think I'm going to waste my money anymore until they give us some kind of real storage solution.

Re: Beer Pong Goes Alcohol Free

Chipmunk777

rofl Dazza @ the link hahaha WD-40...... These guys are revolutionary.

This game looked terrible from the start, so of course you know it's going to be in the top-5 wiiware titles in america.... :rolleyes:

Re: Mega Man 9 Is Coming To WiiWare In Retro Style

Chipmunk777

Doooooouble post?

But anyway, it will be interesting to see how well this game actually sells in this day and age. Actually, AtTheDriveIn92's comment made me think about this Unfortunately, it seems that we who enjoy 8-bit megaman games are a very sparse minority.... But, hopefully I'm wrong about that! It would be great to see Capcom create EVEN MORE new NES megaman games!

Also, it will be interesting to see how they price it. 500 points? It seems like they'd ask for more, though
