Re: Gears of War Developer Expects Wii U Success

Aviator

@Alienfish Most 3rd party games run in 720, not 1080p.

"Also, the argument that 720 and PS4 are going to blow WiiU out of the water in a few years is absolute nonsense."
How so? The Wii U is catching up to what the 360 did at release and what the PS3 did at release. It's going to take a few years for Wii U games to reach the same standard that PS3 games are getting released at now. HD games take longer to make, and if all the Wii U is capable of is what has already been released, then why should I deviate from playing my PS3? I can get the same experience, without having to buy a new console.

David Cage (a few days ago) said that "we're very far from seeing everything the PS3 can do, it's very powerful hardware." If the Wii is capable of just now running games that were released in October 2011, it shows that Nintendo are still not making strong progress.

Show me that the console is able to compete with other consoles, because at the moment, the home console race is solely between 360 and PS3, and the PS3 is hindered due to the fact that the 360 is holding it back. Why can't the PS3 hold the Wii U back? If the technology was available in late 2006, then why is the Wii U only catching up to what was capable 6 months ago?

Yes, as the console develops and grows, developers will be able to produce more from the system, but that is years away. And by that stage, nobody will drastically jump ship because other consoles will be doing much more than it.

Re: Gears of War Developer Expects Wii U Success

But if it's used to say "Hey, you can now play the games that everyone else has been able to play for 6 years", then how is that gonna convince those who have been playing those games to pick up the system?

And honestly, Nintendo can't be pulling old games and use it to show off what the Wii U is capable of. The 360 and PS3 are already capable of producing that, so the Wii U is just catching up. And you can bet my house on it, that when the 720 and down the line the PS4 is introduced, it will further increase the gap the Wii U has tried to close.

If Nintendo and developers released new games that show off the Wii U, rather than using the new controller as an add-on, then it may entice those gamers who aren't buying the console on day one.

Re: Gears of War Developer Expects Wii U Success

I still don't like the fact the developers are simply re-releasing, what will be year old games by the time the Wii U is released.

Sure other people will now be able to play games like Arkham City, but they're not gonna draw in any gamers who can play the exact same game, for a cheaper price, on either 360, PS3 or PC.

Re: GAME Not Selling Mario Party 9

Aviator

If a store is selling one product well, aka COD or Battlefield, and other products, Nintendo games aren't selling well, then what's the point of putting all the bad stock at the front of the store?

Some stores may sell Nintendo products more than other products, therefore Nintendo titles would be at the front.

It's sad to hear whats happening to GAME over in the UK. Hopefully GAME AU isn't affected, because my local stores are good quality.

Re: Nintendo Rejects The Binding of Isaac

Aviator

Today actually, I was researching some stuff surrounding the seven deadly sins and this game came up.

I love when research into literature and art incorporates various mediums. It's simply blurring the boundaries with the conventional forms of video games. Reading up on this game, it sounds interesting, and as soon as I'm finished with this year I am going to buy it (actually, probably gonna wanna wait a while considering the religious undertones (damn English!!)). I don't really give a crap about what the religion blah blah blah, but I am interested in the portrayal of the seven deadly sins in pop culture, in this case, video games.

It's frustrating that the reason is "questionable religious content" as it assumes that everybody has some form of Catholic connections. I don't see this as "questionable religious content", from what I have seen, I see it as an appropriation of the story of Isaac. It adapts a story, which may be well known to some people and may not be well known to others and changes the context. Where the hell (geddit) do you see the blurring of literary devices and interactive mediums?

A big loss for Nintendo.

@Waltz: I like how you're portraying this game as 'art'. To me, it's like smearing entrails on a wall and attempting to show it at an exhibition — yeah, some critics may gush over it, but the rest will call it like it is, and in the end, the galleries have the right to reject showings they're not interested in hosting.

Postmodern art is created to form a connection between the artist, the artwork and the audience. Some may pass it off as entrails smeared on a wall, but others will go deeper and ask why this is the case? What is the artists intent of smearing entrails on the wall? What is the artist trying to evoke from the audience? The whole debate about 'What is art?' emerges, and this probably isn't the place to have that debate, but even if it's thrown to the side, it's still art. It's created with a purpose and a function.
yay for yr 12 art theory

Re: Talking Point: Achievements, Trophies and Wii U

Aviator

I really don't understand most of the disdain towards achievements. They're not mandatory, you are not required to collect all the achievements. Yes, some achievements may seem silly to some players, but very few people will focus on getting "3,000 Super Combo's with Ryu in Street Fighter 4". Most will play the game they enjoy, and collect those miscellaneous achievements along the way. Also to the people complaining that developers are using achievements to milk their game, what? Don't you want to get the most out of your money? In Australia, games aren't cheap, I don't want to be throwing down $100 on a AAA title, and not attempt to collect everything in it. If those achievements make me play and enjoy the game longer, then it's the best of both worlds.

Also, 360, PS3 and Steam (as well as other services) all enable you to turn off the notification. If you are really that affected when a tiny pop-up appears on screen, then that is not a problem.

Re: Review: The Last Story (Wii)

Aviator

@Powerglove I don't speak for Thomas when I say this but as he said in his closing comments, the technical problems is what diminished the experience. A review score, in my opinion, is more about the overall experience of a game, incorporating various elements. If one of those elements is lacking, it can diminish ones experience with the game, and therefore resulted in an eight.

Re: Kid Icarus AR Cards Come with a Tasty Treat

@YashaTheSlayer Yep, J. K. Rowling was the first person in the world to think of accompanying a collectable with food.

Also, would people really want these cookies? You could probably make better ones yourself, and much cheaper at that.

Re: Welcome to the New Look Nintendo Life!

Currently, the chat's text is rather small, compared to other parts of the site. Other than that, like PushSquare I love it.

Great work guys.
and you didn't change smileys!! kissy faces for all!!

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo’s Year of Giving

Aviator

Great read Thomas.

It's difficult to praise Nintendo across the board in terms of giving. Early adopters get 20 free games while those who bought the system after a price cut either miss out or have to pay for them.

NOE gives out Icarus for free while no word on other regions.

At the end of the day, it is nice what they do give out, as they have no obligation to do so. It would be nice to have some sort of consistency across the board, but hey, what are you gonna do?

@Wolfenstien Because it's still running on last gen hardware. Because the Wii U has been announced.
