Re: Masahiro Sakurai: The Wait For Smash Bros. Will Be Worth It

Adam

The dojo was awesome. It was something to be excited for week after week, something to discuss with friends and ease the wait. Those seeking surprises can not read it or follow spoilery threads. Most fighting games reveal the starting roster ahead of time, which is all the dojo did until it was released in the first region.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

I am responding to the article which asks if we would have liked to see online in the game. I explain my reasons and address those who reapond.

But encouraging people to play their games more is a completely sensible goal. That theory doesn't make much sense. What next, power down automatically every hour to make sure we pace ourselves? I don't see that as their reason, or at least I would hope not, personally.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Some people even play games online with their family in cases where they've moved away for work or college, and it would be perfect because the game pad makes voice chat easy and between games you can do a video call to be as close to the same room experience as possible with people you wish you could be with.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Windows 8 is not comparable. I don't see where you are going with it. If Nintendo Land had online play, it would still have local. The exact same product would exist but with additional functionality. Nothing is lost.

Nothing is devalued. If you want to spend time with your family, go for it. Online play won't stop you. It isn't up to Nintendo to decide people need to spend more time with their families and less online. You are reading online comments right now instead of spending time with your family. There can be time for both, and you can decide that.

It would be an OPTIONAL feature. It does not in any way affect the rest of the game. There is no reason whatsoever to think it would be bad to include something you are not required to use but that many other people want.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

MiiVerse is neat but has nothing to do with this. I can already message my friends and send them doodles. MiiVerse moves existing functions to a different context. I like it, but it is something to enjoy passively and by chance while playing alone. It isn't an activity or a way to share time. Not hating on Miiverse, it is a great concept, but it is apples and oranges. I wouldn't compare the time I spent texting someone to the time we spent playing a game online.

And sure I can know it would be fun online. I have played hundreds of games and large number of online games. I know what I like, and this is right up my alley. I understand some people don't see it as a good online game, but everyone has her own tastes.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

People keep saying it is a design choice and that it would not be fun online, but many who have played it are saying they would like to play it online. A design choice that leaves many fans disappointed is a poor design choice. Adding online would not prevent others from playing it local. That is the beauty of choice, you get to do what you want to do.

I really enjoy simple voice-enabled games as a means of connecting with people. Once when I had a PS3, a user from this site started a voice chat with me and we both switched our TVs over to the Wii and played Wii Sports Resort while talking. I thereafter referred to this as good times.

If you are responding to this article, you understand the drive to connect with people online. It should not be a huge leap in reasoning to see why others would like to connect with their fellow gamers by gaming. I would say it is a pretty obvious next step.

To someone earlier who wrote a huge tl;dr post in response to my comparing NSMBU and LBP: I did not compare NSMBU and LBP.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Yea, Hyperstar. I have friends who have moved away, friends who are starting a family, friends who have difficult work schedules, and friends I know only from this site. I primarily play games as something to do with these people. When I have company, we do other things than stare at a TV.

Clearly some commenters don't have the same problems, but it isn't hard to imagine the appeal of online play for others. They are talking online to us, after all, and I don't see any nay sayers saying that they talk only offline because who needs online communication.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Every console has the game pad, even if you aren't using it. Place it nearby and you can chat through it while holding a Wii remote. Even if two people are playing online through the same console, you can share the mic like the Wii did or get headsets like every other console does. This is not a problem that every other online platform hasn't faced already and solved easily.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Even if there was online, you could still play offline without being sweared at by little kids, and HarmoKnight could still be "stuck in the 90s" while playing his brand new HD console.

Each system only needs one mic, so it doesn't matter if Wii remotes don't have mics. The Wii just used one mic, too, so clearly this is a non-argument. You can always use headsets, anyway.

Determining the game pad player would not require much consideration. If multiple players select the game pad option (or no one does in a game where it is required) the game can randomly select who uses it, problem solved.

Re: Nintendo Explains Why Nintendo Land Doesn't Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Mudjo, people play all sorts of games online all the time. It isn't a hassle. You click a friend name and you are in. And if you don't like a random match up, quit and play with someone else. Most people who play games play right. I had no problems of this sort with Little Big Planet.

As to Nintendo's excuse for Nintendo Land, it is an excuse. What do they think, when I have company over they are going to leave and meet me online instead of playing together? Online and local play can in fact exist on the same disc, and people will play both, local when friends and family are around, online when they are away.

Miiverse is such a great way to connect with friends, why would they see that and not see that playing online is, too, especially with voice chat? By their own logic, Miiverse should not exist because talking in person within the same room is more enjoyable, but no one would buy that, and I am not sure who they think is buying this (the explanation, not the game).

Re: Sumo Digital: Mario Kart Should Incorporate Other Nintendo Franchises

Adam

Better yet, why not wish for a new F-Zero with more Star Fox characters? In Command, at least one ending has some of them go on to join the F-Zero league. I could see tossing in Dark Samus, too, though I would prefer the real Samus to stick to one universe.

Not that it really matters. I would totally play Smash Kart. I just don't see the need and I think the characters would mostly seem out of place in a go kart.

Re: Sumo Digital: Mario Kart Should Incorporate Other Nintendo Franchises

Adam

Putting aside the fact that Sega's racer is nothing compared to Mario Kartand they shouldn't be giving Nintendo advice in the first place...

The Mushroom Kingdom has the right amount of whimsy for a go kart racing game. Samus and Link would be ridiculous. Captain Falcon already has a racing game. Fox would be a bit out of place as well.

A few would be okay guest stars - Kirby, Ice Climbers, Olimar - and I wouldn't mind it, but there is no point. The characters are just a collection of stats with a face, not individualized with special abilities or anything. Mario characters draw on limitless nostalgia, unlike any of the supporting cast of Sonic, or really most Sega characters in general.

Even if it was just for access to other environments for tracks, Hyrule, Zebes, Coneria, etc... They just don't fit. They are too serious to envision as a setting for go kart racing. Mushroom Kingdom has a bazillion games to draw creative environments from, and they have room to just make up some.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Director Explains Why Peach Isn't A Playable Character

Adam

Also, unique playable characters intrudes on power-up territory. Peach can already outglide the squirrel suit. They would need to rethink power-ups if each character played differently. I would be interested to see the results.

As to the storyline, they have already done a game with Peach as a playable character. This is not an unsolvable problem. And the whole dream world thing is no more cliche than damsel in distress, maybe less so since they are upfront about Subcon being a dream and don't leave it for a surprise revelation. ...not that avoiding cliched stories should be a concern for Mario at all.

Nintendo's reasoning makes sense, but I would still like to see New Doki Doki Bros. U featuring Peach and others some day.

Re: The Godfather of Video Games Is Baffled By The Wii U

Adam

Man used to know what's up. No indication he still does. Respect for what he did can coincide with an unbiased valuation of his opinion on current matters. If he was talking about retro gaming, I would stand at attention and salute, but I am not getting in line to buy a Jaguar U.

This message brought to you by IMHO.

Re: Talking Point: The Realities of Wii U System Memory Have Become Clear

Adam

The system is already being sold at a loss due to the controller. Demanding more space is either demanding free stuff or demanding higher prices, in which case you may as well spend the same money on an external drive instead. I don't know which of these possibilities describes most of the backlash, but either way it doesn't make any obvious sense to me, personally. Hard drives are cheap anyway.

Comparing the Wii U to PS360 based solely on memory and price seems grossly unfair. There are other price factors, ie. what must be an absurdly expensive controller?

Everyone will always want more for less, but this deal is reasonable at worst.

Re: Talking Point: The Realities of Wii U System Memory Have Become Clear

Adam

You can buy an external hard drive. If Nintendo added more internal memory, they would have to charge more. You pay either way.

As for the black model, you are getting a game for the extra fifty bucks, and U games retail around sixty bucks. You save right there. The extra space and free subscription are bonuses.

I may be missing something or have outdated information, but everything mentioned sounds like a complete nonissue.

Re: Father Gender-Bends Link For The Benefit of His Zelda-Loving Daughter

Adam

Hacking Lara Croft would be pointless. There are thousands of games starring men. There are not a ton of epic adventure games starring little girls. Double standards don't apply because this is not a standard.

The girl wants to play Zelda. She wants to pretend to be the main character. This man went to unnecessary lengths to make that work for her. No one here got hurt.

Re: Father Gender-Bends Link For The Benefit of His Zelda-Loving Daughter

Adam

Making a game with RPG Maker takes fewer technical skills but more creative skills. The guy can hack a game, doesn't mean he can make one, certainly not of Windwaker quality.

I was not upset when I found out Santa wasn't real. And I can't imagine anyone becoming upset when she finds out her dad put an S in front of a few words.

He didn't do the most amazing thing in the world, but clearly the little girl is enjoying it. I see no reason to poopoo his efforts. One day she will find out, and it will still be the same game, only she will have special memories attached to it that others might not have. It's not like that will suddenly disappear.

Re: Super Mario World Was The Perfect Escape For a Novelist in Hiding

Adam

I knew he liked games but didn't know this one in particular. I saw him speak once, and the man could have been a comedian as easily as a novelist. To grossly understate matters, it sucks that he had to live in hiding. Midnight's Children is one of my favorites, though probably his only book I like much.

Re: Review: La-Mulana (WiiWare)

Adam

Lots of games try to be retro. This game is the real deal. It is just the kind of game I've been wanting since the end of the SNES days. Some will get turned off by the beginning of the game because it is a bit obtuse, but your patience will be rewarded. I didn't check the operation manual (because I am a man), but it might be necessary for some.

Re: Nintendo Download: 20th September 2012 (North America)

Adam

To an earlier commenter: La Mulana is not very much like Spelunky. La Mulana is not randomly generated and I think it is open world, not level based.

Both however are 2d combat based platformers with an archaeological theme and a whip as primary weapon.

Spelunky is awesome. I haven't played La Mulana yet but know enough to know what I've told you.

Re: Pikmin 3 Will Not Include Online Multiplayer

Adam

Strategy games tend to be multiplayer. I'm not a big fan of Starcraft's single-player, nor chess's.

It's disappointing. All the people talking about Pikmin being a single-player game obviously haven't played Pikmin 2, where the biggest changes were the two multiplayer modes. And the single-player was actually a bit of a step down from Pikmin 1 to some. The natural next step was taking it online, and the built-in mic on the Gamepad would have made co-op wonderful.

But I'm just glad they changed their tune and confirmed local multiplayer. For awhile we believed it had regressed to single-player status due to the "Players: 1" listing on their site and lack of any multiplayer mention at E3. I hope they have kept the head-to-head mode, but Miyamoto's only referencing local co-op is a tad distressing.

Still, co-op would be much better than nothing. After all, it could be done just the same as single-player, but with more players. Can't go wrong there.

And yes, local is better than online, but it's not 24/7 that you'll have other people wanting to play Pikmin, and it's nice to be able to play with friends who've moved, or internet friends whom you've never met. The "local > online" argument has never made sense as a justification for exclusion. People will play both.

Re: Preview: Wii U Hands-On

Adam

Is the Pro wireless, or does it need tethering to a Wii Remote or Game Pad?

Looks like there is a port at the top, but I'm hoping that's just for charging it from the system.

Re: E3 2012: Pikmin 3 Wii U Trailer is Plucky

Adam

Man, Pikmin 2's multiplayer was so great. I know I was one of a few who actually played it, but I played the heck out of it with my college roommate. Head-to-head was particularly fun... surprisingly.

Really weird of them to eliminate it when the U-pad would make it even easier. Maybe split-screen is hard to do at that graphical level. Or maybe they are rushing the game to completion. A bad sign if so, given the lack of anything else too interesting.

Re: E3 2012: E3 Starts Early With Nintendo Direct

Adam

This is strange. You would think their biggest showing would be the new console, and much else will be tied to it. I'd think anything about the console will have to be repeated at the conference for those who don't watch this.

Not complaining though. Early news is awesome. But curious.

Re: Feature: How Nintendo Can Win E3

Adam

Except there are people who like multiple consoles, Henmii. Quite a lot of them, actually.

@turtlelink Good to know. I'm not sure how much more of a beating your shell can take after what you've been through in that 0-1000000000 streak you have going against me in Brawl/MarioKart/KidIcarus.

(It's a cool place in my imagination. You should all come visit some time.)

Re: Feature: How Nintendo Can Win E3

Adam

You win E3 by scoring the most E3 points. So obviously the best plan is not what NL suggests or even to announce anything at all, but just to have Iwata jump on a turtle on his way up to the stage and have it bounce against the steps for two hours — infinite points and lives, they'd both win E3 and achieve immortality.
