Often with video game characters it's easy to recall which game they debuted in, or make an educated guess, at least. After all, it's hard to forget the game that introduced Pac-Man to the world, for example. On the other hand, origins and original appearances of famous video game characters can sometimes be a little more obscure, clouded by less obvious titles and failing memories.
So, why not test and sharpen those minds with our little quiz? Below we've got a selection of15 video game characters--some main players, others occupying vital supporting roles in the pantheon of video game history--and it's up to you to choose the game they made their first appearance in. There are some very easy ones and others that may have you scratching your head.
Can you name the games that introduced the following video game characters?

I think I know at least most of them. 12 out of 15
10 out of 15. Tried to rush it.
8/15. Some of those questions were rather sneaky.
I forgot Smash Bros Melee came out before Fire Emblem the Binding Blade. Other than that got all of them right
Yeah 5 out of 15......never said I remembered the past much lol.
This one was easy! Though technically Shy Guys have the wrong game, as you note yourselves in the answer
I always go into these quizzes so arrogant, and come out humiliated.
15/15, way too easy.
11/15. Some were proper difficult like Banjo but I got most of the obvious ones like Waluigi and Toadette.
15. Too easy, piece of cake
10 out of 15. Got most of the sneaky ones, but there were several characters on the list whose games I've never played. Still feel pretty good about it, though.
8/15 pfft 🙁
WTF?? Why this site doesn't accept short comments?
I'm not even going to try too hard. I can't tell what happened yesterday from what happened last week.
9/15 i can live with that
5/15. Glass half full, it was educational. But come on, A DANGLING TOY?
Quiz also recommended for those who think Smash's relationship with Fire Emblem is at its most egregious now. 😅
13 out of 15 the Sonic one out of all the questions surprised me but let's face it it's more a technicality that he is in it than anything rather than having anything to do with the game. Although, the question does say on screen rather than in the game I guess.
14/15 The Fire Emblem character Roy got me.
12/15. The Isabelle one surprised me. Shows how little I know about Animal Crossing. At least there was nothing about Pokemon, I know very little about that series.
15 out of 15.
Easy peezy, being a variety gamer has its perks.
Almost got the fire emblem one wrong until I remembered Nintendo did a Corrin with Roy.
12!
Not so bad!
The Fire Emblem characters appears first in Smash, seems wrong to me.
15/15. This was a pretty easy quiz.
15/15 easy! Though I almost messed up at Banjo, I forgot that he even was in Diddy Kong Racing but I did remember that, that game came before.
14/15, was wrong about Sonic.
#1 is a trick question: Mario as “Mario” fist appeared in Mario Bros. So my answer was “incorrect,” even though it’s right. Didn’t take rest of this “quiz”
11/15. Idk Resident Evil, Sonic, Waluigi, or Roy's first appearance.
14/15. The only one I got incorrect was Jill Valentine. I have not played a Resident Evil game before.
9/15, but i tried to rush this at work. The only ones that really stumped me were Sonic, Toadette, and Roy
Three. Clearly I don't pay attention.
If you're gonna be pedantic and say Radmobile for Sonic, then you really should say Doki Doki Panic for Shy Guy, shouldn't you?
I won’t share my score. I’m too ashamed.
@EarthboundBenjy Um... Doki Doki Panic was released outside of Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2.
15/15!
There were some tricky ones, nice quiz.
@BabyYoshi12 Doki Doki Panic and Mario 2 are not technically the same. There are different characters in them, a boss is different, you can save in Doki Doki but can't I'm Mario, and you have to beat the whole game with all 4 characters in DDP to see the ending, but not in Mario.
Classic Sonic trivia, there. I got 14/15 (missed the Fire Emblem one).
13/15, I failed on Roy and Isabelle.
9/15, alright I'm not that big a n00b
14 outta 15. The Roy question threw me off.
EDIT:
@Dr_Corndog
Great minds think alike, eh?
The Kirby one is wrong. He first appeared in Arcana for the SNES, which released 1 month before Dream Land.
12/15. Annoyed at getting Roy and Sonic wrong. Not fussed about Jill (though I should have known better).
15/15. Easy-peasy!
14 out of 15 here, I didn't think Roy made his debut in Melee. Also, although I never played a Resident Evil game before, I did know of the Jill sandwich quote. Nice quiz overall
I got 12 of them right
I refuse to recognize the Rad Mobile thing, and my brain picked Kirby's Adventure while thinking of the monochrome graphics on the GB, so 8/15
That was a harder one, 8/15
10/15 Missed Sonic, Jill, Isabelle, Yoshi, Roy. I thought Yoshi on NES came out before SMW on SNES, a whole generation later. I guess Nintendo supported both systems for like two years. Weird. Roy's Binding Blade release date is obsessive-level knowledge imo. Congrats to the winners.
8 of 15. Poor! Some surprises in there like Banjo and Sonic.
14/15, never played Resident Evil.
I know I'm bad at these things but seriously,I'm not even going to post my score I'm so embarrassed.
8/15. Not bad, but not great either.
6/15! That's pretty much how many of the mentioned games I have played lol
14/15, I always get confused in which game Kirby debuted.
My score was so awful I don’t think I want to share 😂 even ones I was dead certain on... can somebody dress up as a nun and ring a bell behind while shouting shame please?
@HammerKirby same
15/15 The Yoshi one was a wild guess. Surprising that his NES appearances came after Super Mario World. Found this quiz easier than the last two
14/15, the Sonic one tripped me up. The rest were easy because I have no life outside of Nintendo games.
6... I feel ashamed
14/15
Didn't know Roy was in Smash before his own FE game
@TheBigK
The Sonic question was geared towards true SEGA fans
That fire emblem one ruined it 14/15 I forgot melee was first kicking myself now cause I've heard that before.
11 out of 15. Not bad!
14 out of 15, y’all got me with that Sonic question.
11/15. I can honestly say I didn't know the Sonic or Roy ones. The others were just me second quessing myself
I got 3 out of 15 right.
Apparently I know more about sonic than anything with Nintendo.
9 out of 15, not bad I guess.
Kudos for using the best version of Jill Valentine for reference. Haha.
That Sonic one was kind of dumb
10 out of 15... I didn't really know about that Sonic trivia.
The question on Kirby is incorrect. He has a cameo in Arcana for the SNES which released one month before Kirby's Dream Land.
I got 15/15 otherwise but still.
The boxes I selected weren’t always registering correctly so 12/15.
12/15 smash bros melee was a trick question so was sonic and tingle had wind waker art and i blew it. i knew that.
I scored 10. Not too shabby considering all the ones I got wrong, I genuinely didn't know!
Wait, Roy was in Super Smash Bros. Melee BEFORE Binding Blade even came out? What sorcery is this? O_O
17/15
TOO EASY! C’MON, STEP IT UP! YOU’RE TOO SLOW!
I got 9. I have been humbled and educated
Technically, Shy Guys first appeared in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (which means Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic), which became the basis for Super Mario Bros. 2, called Super Mario USA in Japan.
Other than that, the only one I didn't get right was Sonic, I didn't realize he first appeared as a cameo in Rad Mobile before his first game.
8/15 I knew some were tricks but fell for them anyway.
12 out of 15 ain’t bad at all!
10/15, forgot some things but also learnt so things too! Thanks for making these, guys!
12.
Didn't know about Sonic's appearance in Radmobile, that's a nice little piece of trivia.
With Roy, it just never mattered to me, as I never played Fire Emblem, and I didn't play Mario Kart before the Wii version, so I had assumed Toadette to have a sports origin like Waluigi. ^^
@EarthboundBenjy
I was thinking the same thing, but I guess Doki Doki Panic and Mario Bros. 2 are, for all intents and purposes, the same game. ^^
13/15
Great Quiz, got Sonic and Roy wrong.
Roy I should have known, I remember this.
Sonic however I never heard of, so I learned some interesting trivia.
@DrJoson Well, Super Mario World came out 4 years(!!) before they stopped making games for the NES, so it's not that surprising.
@Krisi Wow, I didn't realise the cross over period was so long! The closest thing I guess we can compare that to now is the Just Dance games coming to Wii, but even then that's kind of an outlier
15/15, though Toadette and Isabelle I had to guess.
Seems Fire Emblem has a long history of putting characters in Smash before they've released the game
13 our of 15, I know nothing about Fire Emblem, ha!
...Oh no, not you again, Fire Emblem
I got 11 out of 15
5 out of 15. In other news, I don't remember what I ate for breakfast.
6/15 I didn’t know we were going to be quizzzed 🤧 🖖🏽
12/15. Got Sonic, Roy and Banjo wrong. Forgot Binding Blade came after Melee but the other 2 I would never have guessed. Sadly never got the opportunity to play Diddy Kong Racing though with Nintendo and Microsoft having been on very good terms over the past few years, maybe it stands a chance of appearing on the Switch.
I got all of them correct except for Jill, Yoshi and Toadette.
11/15 got sonic, roy, banjo, and isabelle wrong
I've added an image of the Arcana Kirbys in the answer text and reworded the question slightly for accuracy
15/15
I didn't cheat, I just studied video games instead of doing my homework in school (which I doodled on all day everyday!).
13 out of 15...very good!
