Wed 17th Oct, 2018 13:00 BST: Updated with the recent gen 4 raid bosses and the best counters. We've also streamlined the counters by only including the best three. That way there's a bit less clutter.
Raids in Pokémon GO require teamwork from all nearby players to bring down powerful Pokémon known as Raid Bosses.
Not only do these battles provide exclusive rewards, but they're also a reliable method of grabbing Pokémon that you don't see very often, like Legendary Pokémon.
In this guide, we'll go through exactly how Raids work and list all of the current Raid Bosses. The Pokémon that appear as Raid Bosses change regularly, and we'll keep this guide updated so you know what to expect.

How Raids Work In Pokémon GO
How To Start A Raid
You must be at least trainer level five and own a Raid Pass to join a Raid. You can grab one of these daily by visiting a gym, or by purchasing one from within the game for 100 PokéCoins.
When a raid is about to begin, a large egg will appear over a nearby Gym, along with a counter. Once that counter reaches zero, the Raid Boss will be revealed and it's time to make your way to the Gym.
Once there, redeem your Raid Pass and you'll enter a lobby where you can join a team made up of nearby players. This is also the time to pick your party of Pokémon, and ideally you pick those that will counter that particular Raid Boss.
Once you're all happy, the Raid will begin and you'll have five minutes to defeat the Raid Boss and reap the rewards. Raids play very similarly to Gym Battles, with you tapping to pull off your Pokémon's variety of moves.
Don't worry if you fail on your first attempt though. Once a Raid Pass is redeemed, you have an hour to try and defeat the Raid Boss. Fail and you can tweak your Pokémon and start all over again as many times as you want until that hour is up.
Raid Rewards
Beat a Raid Boss and you get a chance to catch it. This chance varies depending on the Boss, and can be as high as 70% or as low as 2%.
You can't use your regular Poké Balls though. Instead, you'll receive a bunch of Premier Balls based on different variables:
Action | Number of Poké Balls Received |
---|---|
Defeat Raid Boss | 5 |
Deal Damage | 1 - 3 |
Team Damage | 1 - 3 |
Gym Control | 0 - 2 |
Friendship Level | 0 - 4 |
You also get a bunch of other goodies, like Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and TMs.
Raid Boss Tiers
There are five different tiers of Raid Boss in Pokémon GO, and each tier denotes the difficulty. Here's a handy chart to help break it all down.
Tier | Egg | Number of Players |
---|---|---|
1 | Pink | Can complete solo. |
2 | Pink | Can complete solo. |
3 | Yellow | Can complete with a small group of around five players. |
4 | Yellow | Can complete with a small group of around five players. |
5 | Legendary | Requires a large group of around 10-15 players. |
EX | Ex Raid Boss | Requires a large group of around 10-15 players. |
EX Raids
EX Raids are the most difficult type of Raid Battle in Pokémon GO – so tough, in fact, that they're invite only. You have to grab an EX Raid Pass that details when and where the EX raid will take place.
To earn an EX Raid Pass, you have to Raid often and level up your Gym Badges to max level. Right now, there's only one EX Raid Boss in Pokémon GO — Mewtwo.

Zeraora, when?
I find it a little odd that they made Rayquaza weaker than Groundon and Kyogre, and that Groundon and Kyogre are somehow stronger than Mewtwo, I haven’t done a legendary raid since when it was just Lugia and the bird trio going on back in July-August of last year. Most of the players in my area don’t do raids anymore so I doubt I’ll ever have a shot at getting another legendary again.
Well, this is nice. Very late, but nice.
It should be noted that Mewtwo is an invite only EX-Raid that requires an EX-Raid Pass. All of the 5 star raids are limited to a select few Pokémon that are available at that time. Right now only Rayquaza, Groudon and Kyogre are available from a 5 star hatch. Also I could be wrong but I'm under the impression the lower tier raids had Pokémon who get retired from current raid spawns.
Snorunt is also available on raids currently, but I can't remember what tier it is.
But if a rubbish, incomplete and lazy list.
It lacks even some of the key info available quite freely. Like recommended number of players. Do better NL. Clickbait like this will lose you members long term.
@Baker1000
Yes, Snorunt is available as a Tier 1 raid, and it's not included on that list.
This article is quite disappointing, which is weird on NL; most of their articles are terrific, funny, informative.
T5 bosses are schedule-based so not available at all times, mostly just 1 or 2 at a time.
Mewtwo is technically an EX Raid boss only visible and available by invite.
So the article is slightly misleading in that regard.
If anybody would like a good place to find this information correctly, i'd suggest going to https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/raid-boss-list
This is the worst article I have seen on this site!
Hey guys, we appreciate your feedback! Something you're going to see more of going forward are evolving guides that we'll regularly update and keep on top of. I've added a bunch more stuff to this guide based on your feedback already, and will continue to do so!
Honestly I've only solo'd two three star raid pokemon with a few attempts till success aerodayctl and piloswine and that was with 5-6 seconds to spare. Tried a tangela 3 star raid, beat it twice but had 2 to 3 seconds on the clock and got jipped those precious seconds and it said I failed to beat it despite taking all its health, its agravating trying to solo 3 star ones on your own. very very miffed and po'd right now.
Ummm idk if this is just really out of date or something. But the 3 Mewtwo I faced this weekend were over 60,000CP, not 49,000
@Heavyarms55 No, I think they updated recently it but simply assumed that Mewtwo would still have the CP from his EX Raid. I'm not sure the authors of these articles are actually PoGo players.
fyi: this is incorrect:
"Right now, there's only one EX Raid Boss in Pokémon GO - MewTwo."
MewTwo is no longer in EX raids. The next EX raids will be for Deoxys. This is official, from Niantic:
https://pokemongolive.com/en/post/exraid-deoxys/
@foxyglen Just an update, the current EX Raid boss is now Deoxys... plus Niantic have updated the gym system so it tells you which gym is an EX Raid Gym in the top right of the gym's UI (I can provide screen shots if you want).
Thanks for keeping these pages up to date, as a PoGo player I appreciate it.
