2D side-scrolling action games like The Messenger may be a dime a dozen these days, but you’d be missing out on something special by passing this one up.
Featuring a surprisingly long campaign, an incredible soundtrack, and tight, challenging level designs, The Messenger stands as a shining example of great game design and the very definition of a modern classic.

Whether you played this back in 2012 or are completely new to the series, Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One is a masterpiece of video game storytelling.
It features some of the best voice-over performances you’ll find on any gaming platform and sets the stage for a grand, multi-season odyssey of tragic proportions. However, this is also a satisfying and poignant collection even if you never play the subsequent episodes.
Even if you lost patience with Rick Grimes and TV series adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic books, this remains an incredible interactive adaptation of Kirkman's world of walkers.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains a masterpiece, and being able to take such a grand and engrossing adventure on the go is something well worth celebrating.
The Switch's Complete Edition is a truly impressive achievement, and although performance isn't perfect, it's still an incredible and impactful role-playing experience.
CD Projekt Red set the bar for modern RPGs back in 2015, and this port is a startling reminder that it has arguably yet to be bettered. One of the most impressive ports on the system.

While utilising the ruleset of a more traditional CCG system might put off some players, the on-brand approach to turn-based combat in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is still a positive addition to the world.
Because with such an involved and intricately designed story – and such an interesting world to explore beyond the confines of Geralt – Thronebreaker offers the opportunity to lose yourself in the Continent like never before.

Thumper is a fantastic video game, an extravagant rhythm experience that's also a brutal assault on the senses. It's extremely difficult — painfully so at times — yet we feel the need to persevere, retrying tough stages over and over again. Even when that's done, the drive for better ranks remains simply because the game compels us to play on.
The only real flaw of Thumper is that it offers so little respite and no 'easy' mode. Some may scoff at that, saying it's a game designed to be tough, but the downside is that without that optional concession, the game will be inaccessible and impenetrable for some. That's a pity, as for those up for the challenge it's a wonderful, albeit gruelling gaming experience.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 on Nintendo Switch is a rock-solid port of a pair of genuinely fantastic remakes.
These really are two of the very best arcade sports titles of all time, revamped, reworked and re-imagined for modern audiences with all the graphical bells and whistles, collectibles and game modes we've come to expect in this day and age.
With flawless performance in both docked and handheld modes and visuals that still look the part after a few necessary concessions here and there, this is one collection we highly recommend you kickflip right into.

Two Point Campus is a masterclass management sim game bursting with creative new ideas and a wholly original approach to success. Its wholesome ‘invest in students and they’ll invest in you’ strategy is a beautiful way to put a positive spin on an otherwise NPC-exploitative genre.
Dampened only by some technical issues, it still manages to be a standout amongst its peers and shine brightly at the top of the class. And don't forget about Two Point's first stab at the genre in Hospital, also on sale for £8.74.
£8.99 (-50%)
Unpacking manages to do several things very well, all at the same time. It’s a touching story told through interaction, it provides the creative play space of a great dollhouse game, and it deftly applies established game design ideas from completely different genres. Its only real shortcoming is the repetition that is a necessary byproduct of landing its message.
Effort has gone into making the controls satisfying on Switch, and the visual and sound design are delightful throughout, making Unpacking, like any sane person’s cutlery, absolutely top-drawer.
£7.19 (-80%)
Unsighted combines some very familiar ideas: it’s a top-down, roguelite, sci-fi Metroidvania with a strong 16-bit aesthetic. Its time-is-ticking, post-apocalyptic scenario is brought to life by the enchanting palettes of its pixel art, making a world you want to explore, full of characters you want to know.
Far from punishing, it leans more on the 'lite' than the 'rogue', letting fun prevail – as it will, thanks to the addictive rhythm of the controls, backed by punchy sounds. The cooperative multiplayer is icing on top of an already well-iced cake.
Combining flavours of Super Nintendo classics with modern playability, Unsighted is the game 1995 desperately wanted to make but just didn’t know how.

Vampire Survivors skyrocketed in popularity in 2022 for good reason. It's one of the best roguelites in recent memory thanks to its gripping gameplay loop and metagame that hijacks your mind.
The Switch port only adds more to love with local co-op and updated content. It's so easy to slip into a blissful sense of flow in Vampire Survivors' Castlevania-inspired, comically named levels as its ripping soundtrack and satisfying sound design propel you into the horde that you'll surely lose track of time playing it.
It's a good thing that rounds don't usually last more than half an hour. With the addition of free Adventures and a host of DLC, including the excellent Ode to Castlevania, this undead master is teeming with life. Oh, did we mention that all the DLC is on sale, too.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is an absolute triumph in 'neo-retro' game design. It boasts fluid combat with plenty of variety in environmental and enemy design and an art style that looks like it beamed straight over from the early '90s.
While its overall short length might be a bit of a sticking point for some, those looking for an action title that is not only a fantastic experience but also feels like an authentically retro one will find this to be an absolute no-brainer.
£9.67 (-45%)
Volgarr the Viking II is, quite simply, one of the best 2D action platformers on Switch, or any other platform for that matter. It improves upon the original in just about every conceivable way, introducing neat ways to ease newcomers into its relentless brutality, vastly improving the visuals, and adding a soundtrack that is destined to go down as one of the all-time greats.
Minor quibbles with the UI aside, Volgarr the Viking II is an absolute must-play if you can stomach the intense Ghosts 'n Goblins-style difficulty.
£4.49 (-75%)
If you’re after a unique experience, Wandersong completely has you covered. The singing mechanic employed works perfectly, and while it may feel a bit too easy at times, the combination of the visuals, writing, and various gameplay objectives across a generous seven-act structure make for an incredibly compelling platforming experience.
You’d do well to check this wholesome, beautiful adventure out.

What the Golf? is a sterling effort for Switch that has clearly had enormous amounts of love poured into it. Its aesthetic is a little bit indie-by-numbers but there's so much to see and do here that'll have you (and a friend) laughing out loud. It may not be the most difficult game in the world, but it's damn good fun, even if you don't like golf.
Especially if you don't like golf, in fact.
£5.99 (-50%)
World of Goo is a true classic, and it's revered for good reason. 2D Boy's game is instantly accessible but with plenty of depth; it's paced out perfectly, with a steady stream of new tricks and techniques to learn; and its puzzles can be solved with forward-thinking, quick reflexes or a mixture of both. Wrapped up in a unique, pleasantly apocalyptic presentation, with co-op support and a harder 'OCD' mode for added replay value, this is a complete puzzle package.
If you've played it previously, the Switch incarnation might be worth a second go for its portable pointer controls and on-the-go co-op, but if it's your first time into the World of Goo, it's absolutely a must-play. That sequel ain't bad, either.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition presents an already excellent JRPG that's been improved in nearly every conceivable way, short of a complete reimagining.
On top of the fantastic story, enjoyable combat, and incredible world design, Monolith Soft included an entirely new epilogue story arc while polishing up nearly everything in the base game, from progression systems to visuals to UI design. XC:DE is easily one of the best role-playing games on Switch, a console that's not lacking in that department.
It goes without saying that if you were ever a fan of the original, or of JRPGs in general, you absolutely must get this. This is the standard against which all others should be judged.
£17.99 (-50%)
With fun, fast-paced combat, likeable characters, and an enjoyable story that takes full advantage of its beautiful shipwrecked setting, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is a top-shelf action RPG.
Exploring the Isle of Seiren is as rewarding as mastering the character-swapping and hack-and-slash battle system, and both fit into an addictive feedback loop of adventuring that keeps everything moving at a quick clip.
The inconsistent image quality in handheld mode is a small blemish on an otherwise polished production, but this is a fantastic way to play Ys VIII, one of the very best action RPGs on the Switch and a true gem.

Fell Seal is also on sale, a nice indie TRPG.
Nice to see such a sale also in Europe at last, happy for those going for any of these games thanks to it (maybe me included although we'll see - there are some recent physical releases such as Patapon for example that I'd like to get first and foremost)!
Ah, another opportunity to put some weight to my backlog
I wish I could play 1000xRESIST again for the first time.
A lot on sale, even physical, which is nice. I might splash some dough for Persona 5 Strikers and hopefully Pikmin 4 will stay at its currently reduced price of € 40 until friday, when my payday is.
The only game(s) I am waiting to be discounted atm are the famicom detective games. Might never happen...
@AlanaHagues Trails from Zero is 30% off, not 80%.
112 games I should pick up. Steady on NL, that's a lot of £ and backlog. I like your ambition though 👍
I picked up Deadcraft for £3.99. Really enjoying it
I'd like to get Botany Manor, but annoyingly it's still incompatible with the Switch 2.
I already picked up Bioshock and Slime Rancher over the past couple of weeks.
I'm glad I did also pick up a discounted £50 eshop voucher a week or two ago as I have also just purchased:
Pepper Grinder
Penny's Big Breakaway
Trifox
I'm also considering the Batman Trilogy, with Nintendo themselves pointing out Knight as one not working as intended, and Beyond Good & Evil.
Considering I am sinking time into DK, I'm not sure why I'm increasing my backlog 😅
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is worth every penny (even at full price)!
No Bomb Rush Cyberfunk £17.99 (-50%) or Shin Chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation £16.99(-50%)?
Latter is the lowest it's ever been priced at!
I've never understood why people fawn over Kaze and the Wild Masks. It's really not great.
@Markatron84 it's the 2D Crash Bandicoot I haven't had since the GBA
Nice! America already had its eShop summer sale, so of course Europe should get one too!
No thanks, give me a physical summer sale and I would be interested
Still waiting for 33% off Super Mario Odyssey and New Pokemon Snap. Don’t know why they aren’t included. I could only get a 25% discount off Splatoon 3.
Not this time. Not just The Trip™ - Kanda hotel is ⅔ paid for, but there's others in Osaka & Nara to cover yet, plus a JR rail pass and eSim - but that Waterfield magnetic case is also giving me the eye, and Critical Role have announced they are doing two live shows here next year: The O₂ and Edinburgh Castle. They won't be cheap, no sir.
I was about to go off in the comments for Mark of the Ninja being called "the best stealth game money can buy on the eShop," when almost the entire Metal Gear Solid series is right there in front of you, but....
No, you know what? I'm still going to! How dare you call mark of the ninja the best stealth game on the eShop??
Jk luv ya 💕
@Jack_Goetz 1000 x that good? Not seen anything on it but i see its reviewed well across the board. Im tempted.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I loved it. It's more of a visual novel than anything, though it has some interactive sections, dialogue branches, different endings, etc. The story is very much the central focus, but it's hell of a story.
@Jack_Goetz always loved the idea of visual novels but i find i get bored of them. This may be ok tho if theres some interaction and choices too. I might take a punt for that price. Cheers.
do not buy prodeus, those ******** have locked behind the online paid system the entire custom map systems you are obligated to have the Nintendo membership not just for the active online MP part but even to download the offline custom maps cutting off 90% of the game including any custom campaigns this is not reported in any point of the e-shop page!! i was so enrage!!!!
@Kidfunkadelic83 I'm with you on that, but I never got bored with 1000xRESIST, fortunately. I would try avoid reviews though, especially the one on this site, as it's a bit 'spoiler-y'.
@Jack_Goetz iwill be sure to. Appreciate your time 🙏
@Filthy Yeah, it didn’t go up for years then made up for a lot of lost time.
Looking at the stuff we’re doing in the middle week, it should work out; the second half is a bit fluid depending on when/if we can get tickets for Ghibli Park and the Nintendo Museum.
Just got into Monster Train 2 but I guess mayhaps Astral Ascent is worth it?
Might get Catherine if the port is that good, never played it and always been curious.
I'm moving to Europe
The Bioshock games look really good on Switch 2. Somewhere like NintendoLife need to put together a list of games that have variable resolutions and as a result automatically look better on the Switch 2.
Might pick up Balatro
At what time and date sale exactly ends?!
So on my eshop (Europe) it says that Witcher 3 is 100% off...
Would've gotten Xenoblade X remaster if it was on sale, oh well.
On one hand, really helpful article. On the other, nightmare to read through.
No Switch 2 seperation, just one long alphabetical list over multiple pages with review excerpts mandatory instead of viewable at a click in a pane.
112 games ??? Are you buying for everyone NintendoLife ???
If anyone wants to try to match or beat AI, ChatGPT said the character in the middle photo posted in the article is “definitely” Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere. Does anyone know if that’s true?
@kmtrain83 Lol no it's Melia from Xenoblade.
Picked up Little Nightmares 2 for about £2.50.
Not featured here but that seemed like a much larger discount than I had seen before.
I'll take another look before the sale ends.
