Re: Former Nintendo Sales Lead Thinks Switch 2 Price Increase Is "Inevitable"

First, I would not listen to too much from K&K or their guests given their history of negativity and trafficking in, if not pushing, ludicrous rumours, notably about the Switch 2 release and even as far back as the Switch Pro fantasy (mind you, they weren't the only ones on that). They were made outcasts by Nintendo for good reason.

Second, let's look at the supposed rationale of "a combination of inflation, tariffs, and recent memory price". Japan’s inflation rate (where it matters) is just over 1%. Even in the USA it's only 2.4%. Any historical inflation factor was built into the price before release, noting the Switch 2 launched at a whopping 50% higher than the Switch's launch price eight years prior. In Japan, the price increase was 67%.

Tariffs were settled long ago, relate only to the USA, and were already offset by a small increase in accessories worldwide. How people continually throw tariffs into the mix speaks more about their politics than reality. Tariffs, by their nature, create a singular price adjustment and inflation impact. Neither barely happened, and won't now. Even during the high inflation years, did Nintendo raise prices? No!

Memory prices would be the only legitimate concern, except that Nintendo is already on record that their 2026 production schedule and procurement of components is already set. They even boasted about 25 million Switch 2's manufactured by the end of last month, meaning they have 6 million either on shelves, in warehouses or ready to be shipped. The PS5 is in a much different situation now, with smaller, dynamic production runs, so will be hit sooner. Even then, they shipped 8 million during the last quarter of 2025, so their price rise now points at price conditioning for the PS6. Much like Xbox did last year, Sony are acknowledging the PS5 era is drawing to a close and are looking forward. In contrast, this generation for Nintendo is only just starting.

@trobby That's insane that folks think Sony would be the ones to have a stockpile and not Nintendo when Nintendo is the one that has the most recently-launched system while making stock plentiful by comparison to pretty much any console launch before it.

The thing is, Nintendo is also the one that has the most wiggle room in terms of pricing among the console makers. They are super stable financially, with practically no debt and have massive cash reserves. The Switch 2 has been a great success to them, and we are seeing the Mario Galaxy movie breaking records. They are a company that looks at the long-term, not short-term.

Unlike the others, Nintendo is able to survive on just their own releases. The rest rely on 3rd-parties to keep them afloat. With Nintendo garnering more 3rd-party support, they may actually be comfortable with holding off a Sw2 price increase, even if they don't like selling a console at a loss. This is because if they can keep selling hardware, they'll sell more software. It's certainly good promotional material if they are holding off a price increase while everyone else is forced to increase.

Despite what the critics say (which were totally valid), I stilll really enjoyed my time with the film and I plan to watch it again next week. Nostaligia hits in all the right places. I just wish there were more subsantial dialogue between the characters like in the first film. I noticed there were more grunts and groans than actual lines. Aside from a few, there was not much character development either. All in all it was a very fun experience and better than the last IMO.

@Arawn93 Yeah, I went into the movie knowing the reviews, but I still enjoyed myself anyway. If anything, I liked this one more than the previous one. It might even give the live-action one from 1993 a run for its money as my favorite Mario movie.

Can't wait to go back to see it again with my fiancée tomorrow! Since we have the day off, we're going to go see it at our nearest AMC Theatre, so I can get the other colors of the Luma popcorn buckets.

Plus, I've already preordered the steelbook version from Amazon. As much as that egg version from Walmart is cool, I don't shop from Walmart out of principle, so the regular steelbook version is the next best thing.

So not only does AI take human jobs away and demand a ton of energy, it's also part of the reason prices are going up due to chip and other elemental shortages? I'm liking artificial intelligence less each month.

@kal_el_07241 What is the Nippon unit?

@Cyberbotv2 If I remember correctly, they left Nintendo because Nintendo was shutting down their San Francisco operation, and these two wanted to stay in San Francisco rather than movie to Redmond.

While it wouldn't surprise me if the Switch 2's price does increase sometime with everything going on in the world currently, I'm not going to worry or panic buy anything until it 1. Is actually announced, and 2. I fully think through the situation. I very rarely impulse buy anything, especially if it's three figures on up.

(Admittedly, if the rumored Zelda Switch 2 is a thing, that may push me over the fence.)

@ottoecamn I went through 2,590 screenshots and videos to find these scenes. Where can I find the PC versions? This level of censorship didn't alter the vision portrayed for me. But I saw the clouds and whatnot. Looking back at Eva, I'd say it might be egregious, but that route, with Yugamu, I do think they tastefully made their point.

My point is that I want everyone to experience The Hundred Line, and that they'll likely never see these pictures unless they really like the game. It's not eroge, but it tries to skirt the line sometimes.

@Zeeba honestly that makes it even more baffling that things were censored.

Like the other guy said it IS minor, but in the cult of Takumi route, both "Eva Cake" CGs and the "Living Idol" CG with Eito (you know the one) got toned down only on switch, while remaining in their original form on PC. (The eva cake scenes got zoomed in with a huge "white fog" covering the bottom of the image. Like those lazy "sun ray" censorship that happened on some VNs on PS4 some years ago. Same thing with the Eito scene, but with shadow instead).

I get these are small moments and nowhere near as invasive as what happened to Dispatch, but it's by ignoring these smaller things that you give leeway for things to get worse. The point is, not a single CG should've have been changed considering it's an M rated game with very adult themes. Specially when it has the exact same rating on a different platform. Its not something that should be excused (SPECIALLY when the devs never disclosed this information. I would never have bought the switch version had i knew this happened and would've played it on pc instead), hence why I feel the need to bring it up every time.

@ShadLink Your point is accurate and interesting and I wanted to let you know that panic buying and FOMO aren't mutually exclusive. They can exist at the same time. It's all to sell more consoles. And when a person waits out the hype, they're greeted with higher prices as a result, bringing even more gains to the company. Win-win. Or lose-lose if you're a consumer, which you are.
