The end of last year was a great one for Mega Man fans, as Capcom announced that the classic series would be continuing with Mega Man 11. Switch owners were given plenty to look for to as well; not only would Mega Man Legacy Collection and its sequel be coming to the platform, but the Mega Man X games were revealed for a future re-release, too. The details of this were unclear, though it was assumed that Capcom would be releasing them in a collection much like it did for the classic games.
A new listing from the Australian classification board has raised some eyebrows, however, as there are game ratings for both Mega Man X Legacy Collection and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2. If this turns out to be true, that means Capcom would likely be splitting the series into two halves, possibly even releasing the 5-8th entries at a later date. Hopefully Capcom clarifies this soon; it wouldn't be very surprising, but it'd doubtless be disappointing to some.

To me, the most important thing about these collections is doing a little bit of work to make them special. There are a lot of Mega Man X games and so two games isn't unreasonable. And if someone prefers the older or the newer games they only need to buy one.
Disappointing? Gee I'd hate to have to back out of the collection to go into another collection after I beat Mega Man X4. That'd be real inconvenient
There's more profits to be made by splitting them in half. It's Capcom, if they can get away with it you can bet they'll do it. After the Street Fighter Collection comes out in May they'll have managed to sell SF2 to fans twice over 2017/18. Once for £40 and again as part of a collection for £40.
Makes sense.....though if you're making the argument they'd make more profits, just remember the 2nd collection has the meh X6 and the bad X7 as half the games (Never played X3-8, but know of 6 and 7's reputation.)
I got a bigger concern, and that is if these collections will have physical copies. Regardless to there possibly being two X collections, I only need to play X7 and X8, so I look forward to much more concrete news.
This doesn't really bother me. I'd just like some release date info for each of the collections please!
That's lame!
Still buying regardless but yeah...
How come they split them up into two this decade? Last decade, a Mega Man collection would be one whole thing.
I missed out on the X games back in the day, but I was interested in playing them now. Considering the number, dividing it up would make sense. Megaman fans, please tell me which of the X games is the MUST PLAY of the lot?
It's not surprising, still a bit disappointed I guess (the times of companies releasing games like Mega Man Anniversary Collection are gone...).
I hope something will be done for Battle Network / Star Force too, I'm fine with straight ports or emulated versions but a little HD remastery would be awesome.
And speaking of which, what about Mega Man X Command Mission? Technically it's a Mega Man X game, it really deserves an HD remaster (with at least widescreen support).
I expected as much. If they emulate the titles, they need the imaged of the later games present. That would be 3 PS1 games (~700mb) and 2 PS2 games (~4GB) +/- padding files.
Imo, that seemed a bit hefty for digital releases.
But it would be naive to think that profit isn't the biggest factor here.
@RyanSilberman For the Classic collection? I don't know. That was a BS move. For the X collection: The last collection stopped at 6, not including the two larger PS2 games.
@Angelic_Lapras_King 6 is ok-ish once you get how it works and how you can exploit/avoid its BS "nightmake system". 7 on the other hand...yeah. A prime example of "Bad design decisions".
I can't recommend 3,4 and 8 enough though. 3 is underrated, 4 is my personal favorite and 8 being content king.
@Heavyarms55 See above ^^
Rule of thump:
1-4 are a safe bet. All great games.
5 is a bit iffy with some questionable design and localisation choices but solid nonetheless.
6 is, again, ok-ish, not not good, no matter how you put it.
7 is an absolute trainwreck and can (and should) be avoided.
8 on the other hand was a brilliant swansong. Solid gameplay, great soundtrack, lots and lots of content.
It really depends on pricing, and how much work they put into it. If it's just roms on a cart with barely any options... well, slap em all on there for $40 Capcom or step off. $20-30, with a lot of love, options, and extras? I can stomach that. Still not ideal, especially with the Street Fighter collection coming at $40. But I can live with it. Somewhat.
@Einherjar So basically if they do divide it into two releases, getting the one that has 1-4 is the better choice? Or would you say how good 8 is outweighs that? And is there an on-going story with the games, or are they pretty much stand alone?
Doesn’t bother me!! I’ll be picking up all 4 collections physically!!! More Switch carts for me!!!!
@Heavyarms55: The Classic series games mostly could be played standalone, as most of the games' stories were similarly designed assuming you never before played a MM game. The X series does have an overarching story, but still enjoying it individually shouldn't really be too much of an issue. I've never played X4-8, but I can highly recommend the first X title. I like X2 better, but if you're just getting into MM/MMX, then start at the first X title. I was going to answer your first question above, but another user already got back to you. Edit: Both Classic, & X series are connected in certain ways, particularly that they share the same fictional universe. As you probably can guess by name conventions, the X series happens some time in the future(roughly 100 years), after the Classic(also known as Original) series.
@Everyone_Else: I really hope they're properly ported, or (properly) emulated.
Weird.....but i’ll buy it. Hopefully it’ll include Maverick Hunter X. The cutscenes were pretty boss in that version and the graphics were a fun change of scenery. I’ve still got it on Vita.
And maybe throw in Mega Man Powered Up in the standard Legacy Collection for good measure.
First off, In the previous collection, they had to cut content. MM7 was missing it's ending. X6 cut the dialogue if I recall correctly from the collection. If they include all the content, maybe throw in Xtreme1 and 2, along with Command mission, then splitting it in 2 is just fine.
heck, maybe they'll include maverick hunter X? They didn't include powered up with the mega man classic legacy collections, but they can still make a legacy collection 3, there are still plenty of classic games left, like the Gameboy games, super adventure rockman (would be nice to get that stateside), Wily Wars (also nice to get stateside), mega man powered up (would be nice without lag), and even rockboard, though that can stay in japan.
I would have preferred to have them all in one myself. Favorite X game though is definitely 4 it's so tragic, "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR?!!"
@WaveBoy
pfft, grouping X8 with X5 and X3? blasphemy.
X6 and X7 aren't that bad, but they certainly are the weakest titles in the series. I'd group X5 with them too, though that game is super easy, so people will be okay with how flawed it is.
X8 certainly has some flaws, but I adds so much to the series that makes up for any flaws.
Would be nice to include the spin offs but they didn't put Megaman and Bass on one of the Legacy collections, so I don't think they will do it this time.
@Elmarkos
yes, X6 had some poor stage design and boss design, but poor story? Have you been keeping up with the story in the past games? Which X game had a good story? X6 through X8 have the best stories in the series... and they aren't even that good!
X6 had a highly sympathetic villain and for the first time, Sigma is not pulling any strings!
X5 was certainly one of the laziest X games. Everything in that game was pretty much ripped off the previous games. X's armors are the rush adapters from MM6, most of your special weapons were from previous classic mega man games, like elec beam. They even reused soul body from X4! And bubble crab's theme fro X2! They bring back the yellow devil from classic, Rangda Bangda from X1, final boss is essentially Gamma from MM3 or the final boss from MMIV.
@Heavyarms55
The most notable games are X1 and X2, along with X4.
X5 is important if you care about the lore.
X8 is great, though has many flaws and parts that may aggravate you into giving up, namely gravity antonion's midstage "boss". If you do end up playing it, I recommend regularly visiting the store and upgrading your characters.
X6 has the coolest armor for X. It has poor level design, but can be an enjoyable experience if you play around within the mechanics. While it is broken, you can actually take advantage of the brokenness of the design to accomplish some neat things.
If you play X7, mute the game when you reach the boss "flame hyenard".
As long as the pricing model is fair, no worries.
Maybe Mega Man X1-X6 will be in the first collection since they are all 2D then the second collection will be X7, X: Command Mission, X8, and Maverick Hunter X since they are all 3D. Would be nice if they just thrown in Mega Man Xtreme 1 & 2 in there somewhere too.
@Heavyarms55 If you had to pick only one, i'd definitely say go for the one with 1-4. No contest there.
But yes, 8 is, at least in my opinion, really really good and would warrant a purchase even if its only bundled with 7.
But keep in mind, i have a heavy bias here ^^
As for the story, well, that's a little more complicated.
The Lore of the series is actually pretty deep but the individual stories are, well, lets say appropriate for a platformer game.
They are loosely connected to each other, but mostly in the background.
And then there is the issue with X5, which was supposed to be the series finale...So, its ending was first retconned, then reintroduced in the Zero series, but implied that it happened at a much later time and...yeah, its a bit messy.
Bottom line: Enjoy the games for the gameplay, read the Wiki (http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Mega_Man_Wiki) for the lore ^^
@OorWullie I can see why you say that, but USF II is actually a different game. But if you consider it to be included in May's compilation, then you may as well say that the compilation only has 6 games: SF, SF II, SF III, SF Alpha, SF Alpha 2 and SF Alpha 3.
I'm ashamed to say this, but even though I've been a gamer for all of my life, I've actually never played a Mega Man game. I was born in 1997 so the series was definitely not as popular then, even though I heard the X series was pretty good. I'm planning on getting the first collection, and if I like the games enough (which I'm sure I will), I'll get the second and maybe X. Now we just need release dates!
Absolute cash grab. All the history of megaman games would fit on a single card. Also ultra street fighter would fit on the coming collections card. Poor effort on capcoms part. Hopefully it bites them and future collections arrive complete in a single volumn. We have already bought these games countless times.
Yeah, I would totally buy and play through the whole series on one cart. I’ve played too many of the games in the first half, and most of the games in the second lot are not good enough to be sold separately, so unless it’s one big collection I’m not interested.
@OorWullie it's so sad too. I felt the legacy collections after megaman anniversary collection were ripoffs. It should've just been 1-6, 9 and 10 in 1 nes style collection rather than 2 games having only 9 and 10 as new content compared to anniversary collection, which also had power fighters 1 and 2, which are also missing on legacy collections 2. They could have even added the game boy games from cancelled mega Man mania.
People even buy the shoddy megaman mobile games too. But emulators are bad mmmkay 😂
Does anybody want this collection in two parts? Disappointing move Capcom.
The main issue I see is that, assuming these releases split the series right in the middle, the X Collection 2 part doesn't hold a candle to the X Collection one. If Capcom is putting out 5-8 separately, then I might just skip those.
But this also devaluates the MMXC1 a great deal, since now it would only include 4 SNES games that have been widely available since forever. So yeah, maybe there's no need to get that one either, especially if it retails at $40 or more.
It's Capcom, they're infamous for milking a profit. I said this could happen when the Collection was first announced. They've especially been bad to Nintendo fans, while other consoles got collections, Capcom would sell their VC games individually on the Nintendo eShop.
I guess my only question is, who would even buy the second half?
I would buy both halves and Both Legacy Collections.
@Giygas_95 Same here!
I really only want X4 and X6 so it would be troublesome if those were on different releases-
I bet a physical copy will include both, but they will be available separately digital. I'd rather just have one collection though.
I was never a fan of X onwards. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on 11 though. If there's a HD reboot featuring some of the original levels and music, I'll definitely be interested.
idc about capcom until they bring monster hunter to switch.
I’d pay $59.99 to have all in one. I’m talking ALL IN ONE.
Not 29.99 each for two. Oh well.
Still buying. Absolutely.
And my gold mega man amiibo better be compatable in some way.
Yeah, not supporting greed. Gonna just pirate them.
Probably for $19.99 each. Typical Capcom.
Capcom exec 1-"Hey loads of people online are saying the Mega Man Collection looks really good value"
Capcom exec 2-"Really? Can't have that. Split it in two"
must be due cart space he says ironically or in real english a way to fleece Switch owners. Capcom = enter your expletive here
Eh, whatevs. I'm getting both. I need me some Mega X on the go.
Who wants any other MMX games besides 1-4?
Lol if they split the collection 1-4 and 5 -8 nobody will buy the second collection, X6 and X7 are awful and a lot of people seem to hate X5 too(I though it was great) so spliting them like this would be a big mistake
Thing is even if they do X-5 for one and 6-8 for a second, that srcond set is a tough sell on X6/7 alone.
If they split it down the middle with X-4 in one and 5-8 in the second its STILL a tough sell because ive been told while solid, 5 also isnt that good.
Not sure if they are aware...
Considering they could put pretty much the entire x collection onto a gamecube disc back in the day even if some stuff may have been cut there should be more storage on the current devices along with the downloadable extra storage if need be there shouldn't be any reason besides greed for splitting this into 2 collections. Wait it's capcom it's definitely happening, we are talking about the same company that has sold us mega man in 20 different ways and we just keep rebuying it lol.
Strange considering that I just read the the legacy collection 1 and 2 will be on one cart. I would most likely buy these digitally anyways but seems like a bizarre decision.
I rather have 2 games at $20/$30 each than one at $40/$60 (guessing the prices), if the 1st one is just the SNES games, since I already have them elsewhere. So not disappointed at all if that's the case, actually glad.

I've played far too much Command Mission for my own good so kinda hope it's included in part 2. Also I had it on Gamecube so if it's ported then it shows that Switch can handle Gamecube games perfectly well and could hopefully help other companies decide to port their games ie RE4, SA2:B and HM:AWL, all games ported onto other consoles(sort of, I mean it was the ps2 version of AWL on the ps4 but same difference).
With the way they initially worded it in the announcement I thought they might actually try and sell ‘em for $8 a pop. So two collections is fine by me. It’s only a semi-gouge. 😛
Not a huge deal. Hopefully X 1-6 all come in one package though. 7 and 8 are much larger file sizes so putting them into a seperate collection would make sense. Maybe they could throw in some bonuses for that one if it ends up being split up that way.
More Capcom nonsense...
And for something different, they should bring a Disney collection back (Chip n Dale, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, Magical Quest, etc). I know copyright issues and this and that. But that would be awesome!
Huge bummer for me. I'd really like to see them all together.
While it would be nice to see the whole collection in one cart, I'm OK with just having the first three games. I've had mixed experience with the other titles.
They already released one collection with X1-X6 for the PS2 and GameCube. I'll be bummed if they split it in separate releases but i'll eventually buy it... on a sale.
@subpopz That actually depends. While you're absolutely correct, the images might need padding files, a.e. filling the disc with dummy data.
Wii games are notorious for that for instance.
It depends on how Capcom manages these compilations. We will see ^^
I’d rather X-X6 were one collection as they felt like a series. X7 and X8 on PS2 were nowhere near as good but had much bigger file sizes and graphical overhauls.
@subpopz Like i said, you're absolutely right ^^
I just lost faith in Capcoms competency over the last few years, so im expecting the most illogical decisions
As long as they're on physical disks, I'm happy.
@RyanSilberman
Because Capcom likes da money.
@Cronopi
What's Magical Quest?
@subpopz
While they did cram all those games AND even included battle and chase, they did still cut some content, just like with the mega man classic collection
@Elmarkos
It was certainly translated well enough to get the story, nowhere near as bad as zero wing. And which X5 ending does it spit in the face of? It actually fixes the timeline considering MMZ!
X6 was an interesting sidestory similar to the xtreme games, and even links elements of those games!
You want an X game that spits in the face of everything before it? X4 and X7 my friend, with X4 being the worst. Sigma virus eradicated? Dr Cain existing? Oh well! Total story reset and retcon!
@subpopz
The ending of mega man 7 was cut from the classic collection.
As for the ending of X6 spitting in the face of X5's ending with Zero's death, that ending itself spits in the face of X3's ending, where "X's destiny has already been decided, to save humanity, he will have to destroy Zero". Which spits in the face of the events of X2, where Zero is resurrected after after blowing himself up! Picking on X6 for something like that is just asking for consistency in a series where there has historically been none!
X5 also throws a wrench in things by making the hologram of Dr. Light sentient. Is he alive or a hologram? depends on the game you play, but he is aware enough to know who Zero is! X5 even suggests that Wily is still alive as well, which can certainly explain how Zero was revived, since X was "killed" the exact same way as Zero, except he got to keep his legs.
Personally, X6 is my favorite of the PS1 X games. Where effort lacked in level design, they put more effort in the actual gameplay itself. Zero's sprites were ALL redone, and he is given more techniques in X6, and more original techniques than the two previous games. That and the customization system took the crappy one from X5 and made it amazing.
The only real issue with X6, which is why some people love it and some hate it, is because it gives you less options on how to play well. In previous X games, you could get by playing in many different ways, and lack of skill was very much forgiven. X6 isn't as forgiving with the nightmare things. You screw up, or play too slowly, and a reploid can be permanently killed, thus potentially forever locking away a great powerup. That, and there are 4 or so sections of the games that cannot be passed without the right setup. They are easily circumvented. Killing yourself repeatedly 10 times to exit is a pain, but they're easy enough to remember so that you won't face them again ill equipped.
The internet confounds me. Everyone is unaccepting of X6 because Inafune didn't work on it, but at the same time, the internet views him as the biggest charlatan and wants nothing to do with anything he creates...
@Tempestryke It's a solid platformer released by Capcom on the Snes with the Mickey licence. Here's more info:
https://youtu.be/FYCvSbm1Y50
The Disney licensed games on Nintendo platforms by Capcom were always good quality games.
@Cronopi
Oh its Disney? Nice.
Sometimes they did. I had Little Mermaid, Duck Tails 2, and Aladdin.
I never was fond of Adventure in the Magic Kingdom.
