It’s quite an understatement to say that fans have been waiting for Kingdom Hearts III for a long time now, and it seems that there’s still a long way to go yet until the game is finally in everybody’s hands. Though it is currently slated for a release on PS4 and Xbox One, many Nintendo fans were hoping that a Switch version might be possible given the engine its being developed on and the series’ history with Nintendo handhelds. During a recent interview, Tetsuya Nomura—the game’s director—made a comment that gave Switch owners some hope that it could happen someday, but Nomura has since clarified his statement.
Nomura said that the meaning of his statement became muddled as it was translated into English and then back into Japanese. His point was that the PS4 and Xbox One versions are to be the sole focus of the development team going forward until launch, and only after they are shipped will the team even begin to consider porting the game elsewhere. And although Nomura mentioned the Switch in his initial statement, he didn’t mean it in the specific sense, just that any other platforms may be considered.
What do you think? Will kingdom Hearts III eventually show up on Switch? Do you think the console can handle it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Sooner the better.
I think it's completely possible for the Switch to get Kh3, it's just a matter of how much they will have to tone down. I garuntee you though, people would buy it. I know I would, especially if they can keep the framerate high and consistent.
That's roughly how I interpreted the original statement, anyway. Hopefully this really does come to fruition. I've never played a Kingdom Hearts game, and probably never will as long as the main series games shy away from Nintendo platforms, but the new one looks great, and I'd love to try it for myself.
Kingdom Hearts 3 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy are the two games that have me really wanting a PS4. An eventual Switch release for both (specifically the latter) would be enough for me to die happy!
As long as it comes I'll be happy. I've always wanted to try KH but never got around to it. If it comes to Switch I'll for sure buy it though!
I think it is possible. We just need people to keep supporting the Switch.
I don't think it will happen...now if there is like a switch 2 with a newer tegra processor then maybe. But I am always very skeptical nowadays when someone claims to bring a major title to switch.
Still doubt it...
Now what crazy. If KH 3 did comes to the switch. This is prove that 3rd parties are full of poopy. The switch is not powerful than the xbox one. The switch is 1x power than the wii u in dock mode. The wii u could handle KH3 but these devs are poopy
I have no interest in this game coming to Switch unless I can play the first two Kingdom Hearts games on a Nintendo console first.
I've always found it odd that over half of the Kingdom Hearts series has been on Nintendo portables (including the direct prequel story running into Kingdom Hearts 3) and yet Square Enix snubbed Nintendo machines for the "Main" entry's. For example, why didn't the Wii get Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (that would have sold a ton during the Wii's peak)? Also, why didn't the Wii U get the Kingdom Hearts 1&2 HD sets (Square Enix instead makes their 1 and only Wii U title a Deus Ex game which was doomed to fail)? I had chalked this up to some kind of console exclusive deal between Sony and Square Enix until they announced Kingdom Hearts 3 for XBOX One!?, a console line with no history with the series. For that matter, why hasn't the entire Kingdom Hearts HD series been announced for the Switch (this is the definition of a no-brainer)? Fans would jump on this and by the time they've finished releasing all of them, it would be perfect to then bring KH3 over. Square Enix's ability to screw themselves out of money on Nintendo consoles is truly impressive and really quite sad.
KH3 on PS4 is like a big, fat ice cream bowl you simply can't wait to eat. KH3 on Switch would be the whipped cream on top of that ice cream. I'd take it as well but if it's not gonna happen, I'd be happy with my ice cream nonetheless. As a proud member of Team Cake, I would have used a cake metaphor but an ice cream one is easier to understand, I think.
Would buy instantly.
Judging by the footage I have seen it would have to undergo serious compromises in order to even make it run on Switch with a decent framerate. I am definitely leaning towards the side of it not coming to the system. Doesn't matter to me though I have been waiting for this game for over a decade and I have absolutely no problem playing it on my Xbox, despite that the fact we are getting the third entry but not the hd rereleases of 1 and 2 being plain stupid.
The portable nature of the Switch makes it ideal for me when playing these types of games. Much better chance for me to stay interested when I have the option to play anywhere or even in the same room while my wife is watching stuff on TV. Would definitely love to see a quality port make it to the Switch!
It was pretty clear the first time, nothing new came out of this
Yeah like there's any other platform besides the Switch and PC at this point unless he counts mobile and that Atari Box thing as a platform.
@BezBot created an account just for this lol but if KH3 is the first you'll play I'd recommend at least watching the cutscenes in YouTube, the story would be too complicated to understand without context!
The one for 3DS was a little weird. But fun. I hope it comes to Switch someday as I could see the appeal.
@Dpishere depends on if the engine is scalable or not.
I'll be waiting.
Yup, lets leave Nintendo out but include Xbox, a brand nobody in Japan gives a sh*t about. I always say this, but it never ceases to amaze what an utterly stupid decision it is. Then again, this is the same dumb as hell company that thought making Tomb Raider exclusive to Xbox was a good idea.
@Gamer83 you do realise porting from XBOX to PS4 and PS4 to XBOX is much easier than downgrading to Switch, right?
The other 2 are like P.C's, very little work is required to get a game running on both consistently.
Your argument is basically complaining that someone with a ton of oranges is offering orange juice with pulp or without but HOW DARE THEY NOT offer Apple juice.
Kingdom Hearts would do very well on nintendo hardware.
Some of game developers are Blinded by PS4 specs.
I don't even know why we're talking about this. The game will maybe be released in 2018 and IF they decide to port it to switch (scaled down) we will see it in 2019 or 2020? I mean if you really wanna play this game just buy a PS4/Xbox.
Nope, never gonna happen, there is always hope for the dreamers, can't remember when a main KH made it to Nintendo hardware, normally just get spinoffs
That picture used in the article is probably pretty close to what they'd have to do to the graphics to get it running well on the Switch. Not knocking it, just stating the obvious that it'll have to be scaled back quite a bit.
So that's another major third party game that probably won't come to the Switch. Doesn't matter how popular a console Nintendo produce, third party games will always be an issue it seems. Has been for two decades now. Good work!
I'm not buying Kingdom Hearts 3 for quite some time.
They haven't even shown a Frozen world yet — why do I care about Tangled and Toy Story?
Is anyone surprised? It takes this guy 1000 years to do anything
So there you go. People might as well forget about it ever happening.
If the PS5 came out tomorrow, you can bet Square Enix would make sure this is on it at launch.
KH3 on Switch would be great - no doubts about that. But I would probably only get it if it finally had a solid multiplayer component behind it. Chances of me getting it at all are pretty low, but they're better if the game did appear on Switch. I'm not too bothered either way, honestly.
Would expect that they first port kh remix to the switch before kh3 will arrive
@RainbowGazelle If the PS5 came out tomorrow it wouldn't be barely more powerful than a Wii U.
Well... only limitation i'm seeing it the 4GB ram memory. Nintendo should've gotten at least 6gb to be a bit more futureproof. Not sure how much Vram Switch has though. But going to optimize a game with 4gb ram limitation might irritate game studios today. Who is going to spent time on that?? That's the only reason I might see. But hey tim will tell and it would be a nice total to own on Switch that's for sure
@TreonsRealm I think that if 3rd parties releases all their games on switch, and Nintendo consoles got every multiplatform game, then there would be no need for these other consoles to exist and Nintendo would control the gaming world 100%. But instead they control 10% of the home and 90% of the portable. And even when Nintendo makes it easy for devs to port to switch, they still afraid of going up against 1st party Nintendo games.
This changes nothing, it sounds like what was said the first time. Current platforms are the focus, more platforms may be supported at a later date.
It's Kingdom Hearts, of course a "later date" could mean 2020
@Anti-Matter It's called progress.
OH, REALLY ?
im shocked.
Really.
@MysteryCupofJoe ((would be nice if you could find one that wasn't marked up 50%))
@Donutman Why would anyone buy inferior versions of every multiplatform game?
I'd rather just see 1.5+2.5 on the Switch, complete with playable versions of 358/2 Days and Re:coded...
Kingdom Hearts III is probably going to go PS4/Xbox One -> PC port. I don't expect it to come to Switch.
I understand financial burdens, but I strongly believe that every Switch owner should have a PS4 or Xbox One as a buddy console. I don't expect my Switch to play graphically powerful games. I expect my Switch to play 1st party Nintendo masterpieces. My PS4/vita will handle the games like kingdom hearts. If I know there is a more beautiful, better fps version out there, I wouldn't dream of having it on the Switch, but I understand that's my own opinion and I don't really use it as a handheld, so...
I hope they bring it over to the Switch regardless. It WILL do well.
As someone who loves their Switch, I prefer Kingdom Hearts main series games on the Sony console it just feels right. Not to say if it did get a Switch release I wouldn't be excited, but a Sony console is just Kingdom hearts home, I still find it strange that it was coming to Xbox one when it was announced. But a portable main series KH does sound great.
@StebanBG Oh I didn't know the story was all connected that much. I'll most likely just buy the other ones cheap somewhere on my PS2
Could be a Final Mix version as they do like doing ultimate versions of the main games.
I think more people would buy this on Switch than on Xbox One. I just don't there's a Kingdom Hearts audience on Xbox consoles.
Do what you have to do to give me a solid 30 fps
But we'll get Kingdom Hearts 3.2, detailing the 5-hour adventure detailing Sora's bathroom break post-Kingdom Hearts III.
Then Tetsuya Nomura will say that this spinoff "shouldn't be treated as just a spinoff" because "it's the length of an usual Kingdom Hearts game" and that playing this before Kingdom Hearts IV "isn't necessary, but will greatly improve the enjoyment of the next installment in the franchise".
Bottom-line: if you own only Nintendo systems, you only get bits of the greater Kingdom Hearts lore. I'm so, so sick of this.
I'm not sure this guy can get KH3 out on PS4 before PS5 launches, Switch really shouldn't even be on his radar.
This is why I always have Nintendo and PlayStation. Xbone lol just lol for a console
@Not_Soos All Kingdom Hearts games are main series games, even the ones on handhelds like DS and GBA
@NintendoFan4Lyf All KH games are mainline games so yes they have been on Nintendo consoles
@Menchi187 inferior as in graphics, well that doesn't matter. If graphics really mattered, minecraft wouldnt exist today.
If it's a watered down port which missing features, then that's mostly due to the laziness of the developer.
@Donutman And performance. Which effects gameplay. Delivering a worse and inferior experience.
I would love to see the new Kingdom Hearts on the Switch someday but any of the games would be appreciated on my end. The 3Ds had one released for it so I guess the Switch would be powerful enough to handle KH 3.
This is more or less how I thought things would pan out. Time to move on, nothing more to see here.
AAA ports from the PS4 and XO to the Switch are a waste of everyone's time. The difference in power levels are so gigantic that the Switch version would be hugely inferior to the originals.
Just buy the PS4 version.
@Alucard83
Sorry, but you are technically completely illiterate. Memory is the least of any dev's worries when trying to port a PS4 game to a Switch. The Switch has a Tegra X1 GPU, running at 0.5 tFlops when docked, and half that when undocked. By comparison a stock PS4's GPU runs at 1.8 tFlops and at 4.2tFlops on a PS4 Pro. CPU and memory speeds are much higher on the PS4 as well.
A Switch is at best, somewhere in the region of Xbox 360 performance, and often lower.
Still don't get the hardware issue, if the Switch can run Zelda breath of the wild it should be more then possible to run this.
This isn't a 3DS people. XD
@moroboshi But this game isn't that graphically detailed, looks about the same as Switch's Zelda or Mario which both run fine.
Plus having a portable version of this, would make it the best version. (Hench why most people are buying ports on the Switch. )The future is now.
@ClassSonicSatAm This is a 30fps game on a 1.8 tFlop GPU. How well do you think it would run on a .05 tFlop GPU? You do the maths.
It will be a missed opportunity if it doesn't come to Switch. Besides, how difficult is it to get it running on Switch?
@Kayfios
Same I've got it on ps4 but playing it on the switch in handheld would be great.
Translation: we want western game money and we know it's easy to get on psxbox. Also, the game still runs like trash on dual Titans, and we expext the xbo version will run at like 15fps. But hey, we're squeenix, so you knew that.
@N8tiveT3ch We're not getting a Switch 2 anytime soon.
@subpopz Sadly they are not going to do that.
@Azooooz -if some people are to be believed, it's basically impossible. Of course those same people are ignoring that optimization is something they could do and also ignore that there are ways to obtain the same visual effects through alternative means.
@MegaVel91 The game runs on UE4, right? If so, then I don't see any difficulty in porting this game to Switch, since it also supports UE4.
@Azooooz Except not every game that runs on U4 can be run on the Switch. There will have to be some concessions they would have to make graphically at the very least to make it work.
@moroboshi Doesn't mean much, Atari Jaguar was a 64 bit system...couldn't even do a 32 bit game well. "do the math"
It's possible, look at GTA V was a unstable 30fps on PS3, comes to PS4...it's just a stable 30fps. They could swing it, being a cartoon style game helps too. again have it portable would make it worth buying.
@ClassSonicSatAm
You're clearly not a dev. I am.
If Kingdom Hearts 3 ever does come to the Switch (it won't), then it will be a hugely diminished experience due to graphical cuts. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Just buy a PS4.
@MegaVel91 They keyword that you mentioned is "Optimization". I didn't say that it should have the same graphics as the other version. As long as it's 60FPS or even 30FPS, at least the game should run pretty well on Switch, with moderate change in graphics quality.
Not just this game, but many if not all big hitters will never come to switch without ruining the games, switch doesn't have the guts to run big ps4 xbox games, switch is a coffee maker compared to the big boys for raw power
@moroboshi I find it funny you say you're a dev, but then I have to wonder just how much experience and knowledge you actually have, or if you're like some of the people on the Project M team who thought making a mod for a game somehow makes them seasoned developers.
Long story short: put up and prove it. You talking about Teraflops and other technical jargon means nothing. A lot of the stuff you've mentioned are things any random person can look up and learn.
@MegaVel91
Over 20 years of AAA dev. Is that enough for you?
I suggest you do some technical reading before you pen another ill informed rant.
@moroboshi Not really. Consider you didn't even cite any projects you were a part of. Again. Anyone can claim anything on the internet.
Put up or shut up.
@MegaVel91
Charming. Welcome to my ignore list.
I'd love kingdom hearts on the switch. Even if it was just 1 or 2 port
@SwitchVogel
