Following the success of Miitomo Nintendo has announced its next two mobile releases, and they're big names from the company's library of IP: Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing.
Regarding the latter, it has been confirmed that the smartphone app will offer connectivity with Animal Crossing games on "dedicated video game systems". That could mean Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, or it could hint at a future Animal Crossing game for NX.
Whatever it means, Nintendo is making it clear that this app will form a bridge between smartphones and its dedicated consoles:
We are currently developing a new application for smart devices based on the characters and world of Animal Crossing. As I mentioned before, the Animal Crossing series for dedicated video game systems is well-loved for its long-term playability, so we want to offer a connection between the smart device application and the world of Animal Crossing on dedicated video game systems. This will make it even more fun to play in both ways, while offering a new style of play for smart devices. We are developing this application to provide consumers with strong value suitable to smart devices while also generating synergy with our dedicated video game system business, as this is one of the goals of our smart device business.

Just, please don't let it suck Nintendo. that all i ask.
although im interested in, seeing on how this well connect on other animal crossing games
Villager is a psycho killer.
Of all of Ninty's IP this is probably the best one for a Mobile Outing.
If you just want to bum around the house in slippers, do a bit of gardening, make some oat biscuits and go out of your way to avoid having fun with your wife what better way than to do it with ease on your phone. 😄
@FX102A I was kinda expecting WarioWare to be on smartphones.
I read the title as "A new style of pay".
I wonder if they will bring the Animal Crossing Plaza back to the wiiu with some kind of connection to the mobile app. Hopefully it will be connected to their existing AC titles and not have to pay out and put in the hours into a couple of new titles.
Interesting. I love Animal Crossing so I'll keep my eye on this
@John_Enigma WarioWare would be awesome!
@Raptor78 Yeah, if they can find a way to connect future AC games, that would be great. Kind of like how LittleBigPlanet 1-3 are all connected to the same profile and everything gets imported into the newest game.
What if it's like an Animal Crossing social media thing? So the NPC animals can message you all the time with questions about their shirts and catchphrases even when you aren't playing the home-console game.
As long as it is similar to a mainstream Animal Crossing game and still has the Animal Crossing spirit, then this has the potential to be a winner, especially because the Animal Crossing style of play would work perfectly on mobile.
As long as there will be an AC on NX, I'm okay with it.
@John_Enigma That would also work in theory, but most majorly successful smartphone games these days are based around a sense of responsibility and accomplishment with elements of collecting. This seems to trigger desires in people's minds to advance forward by increasing your hoard of digital possessions and complete tasks to make your accomplishments seem every greater. All at an incredibly slow speed though to entice speed-up spending.
A Warioware mobile game would fit the role as one of those "time waster" smartphone games but may be hard to monetise; unless they kept additional mini games locked behind payments or some form of collectable currency that is earned by playing said mini games that you can only play once every 4 hrs or so.
I'm hoping it ties in with a new Animal Crossing main series game (presumably on NX) and acts as a partner app; I can see you making designs, messaging friends/villagers and organising inventory space in between play sessions of the actual game.
I thought they said before that their actual games will be paid downloads? Or am I wrong?
As long as there's a main-series game down the pipeline, I'm good.
Well they did say that a lot of unannounced Wii u games are being ported and upgraded for NX , so maybe Animal Crossing mobile as well as Fire emblem mobile are gonna be released along the NX , which will have an animal crossing game on release and hopefully a FE game .
@Megapokepaul They did say that? When?
As long as it isn't like candy crush, I'm good.
I guess it'll be a new style of play in a similar manner to how Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival are completely different to regular Animal Crossing games. Whether or not it's any fun, we'll have to wait and see.
Get ready for Animal Crossing: Pajama Party!
@TruenoGT when did he say that?
@Bezerke99 it's a differently a sequel to amiibo festival with the name like that .
@KoopaTheGamer they didn't officially say it , but all verified source are saying it. It's very plausible since the Wii u was a failure ( new big projects are probably being moved to the next console).
This could be great for bringing ppl back to their consoles. Animal Crossing is for everyone and everyone will now be able to play a probably watered down version which will hopefully draw them to the NX. It's all about getting that sales volume up. I just hope the app itself has more staying power than Miitomo which got boring real fast.
I just hope it's not age-locked like Miitomo. My kids would be crushed.
Basically, it sounds like this app will work with a console version so you can stay on the go with your villager and probably meet other villagers. Which means an AC NX is most likely happening! Hooray!
I can see Animal Crossing on phones. Fire Emblem though? I'll be curious to see what that looks like.
@TruenoGT huh, although, things could change from now. but i do have agree he would probably not be happy about it.
I don't want it to be like miitomo. Having to answer questions all day or hear people's answers all the time. It's annoying and slow.
This 'new style of play' rhetoric gets old fast.
Mind you some phones nowadays come with an NFC chip inside. If they could utilise this for use with amiibo cards/figures they could potentially make some cash - and it's a new way to offer content
for animal crossing i want full premium game no iap,no ads,no energy system gameplay..... this looks better hoping for that.... does nintendo will get attention? i don't know for sure, but i'm sure this full of prices and more goods.
Shout out to my boy Apple!
This is a bit off topic, but I don't understand why people want an AC game for Wii U. After playing New Leaf it feels like AC is a series that's meant to be played on the go.
So Animal Crossing Mobile will be this game where you dress up your avatar and answer questions that arrive in letters to earn bells. Occasionally a friend will stop by to tell you something about themselves and you can pay Tom Nook to play his pachinko machine to get new wallpaper.
@seb5049 i have no issue with it, but every animal crossing has been on all consoles since the N64, it could go Wii U, it could go 3ds (and by that i mean Regular and New 3DS) it could go NX, who knows what Nintendo well do. only time can tell.
(although i would be happy to get a Wii U version of Animal Crossing, kinda getting tiered of playing New Leaf all the time. and HDD is something for me when im bored. ) but if they do a 3DS one im all for it on there as well.
Animal Crossing is made for mobile in my opinion. If I had it on my phone, I wouldn't be typing a comment in right now, I would be playing. The biggest issue I have with New Leaf or City Folk is getting the system out or booted up for just a few minutes of action.
I don't think it will be a full on AC game though. It might be a part of a larger game that would allow you to finish tasks on mobile so when you are ready to dig deeper into the game you can do that.
As for Fire Emblem, I'm not Sure where they will go with it. I think I read that the idea was to make a Fire Emblem game that was more accessible to mainstream. I just don't know how they will accomplish that.
I wouldn't mind this. I enjoyed Miitomo for a while, maybe I'm just not social enough. After a while it felt much more like a chore than a game. I'm just hoping that this doesn't turn into more of that. The last Animal Crossing was a flop in my eyes so hopefully they can get back from that and back to the basics. I'm hoping this also doesn't mean that they will abandon 3DS and Wii U support for AC. I think Fire Emblem is such a powerhouse right now that they would be foolish to adapt it to iOS and Android only but with the last AC game, I am worried about the future of the series!
I´M AN ANIMAL CROSSING FAN HELLO PEOPLE
I hope this isn't as boring as Miitomo actually is.
Animal Crossing seems like a good fit for mobile, provided Nintendo doesn't go IAP crazy or put everything on a cool down timer. Fire Emblem doesn't. I'm not a fan of the series, but I know you engage in battles against NPCs. So will you fight your fellow users, and how will that work out? What is the motivation fighting someone else? It's not Pokemon. "Our eyes met, therefore we must battle!"
When a company wants to introduce a new product, it will put new money in getting that product to market. But it won't effect the existing products, unless it is to replace a failing one.
Nintendo has invested in the NX. But that is a separate issue. Companies are continually investing in research to improve and update existing products.
But the Amiibo and Mobile apps and games should be a separate investment and not effect existing products. I guess the Amiibo will be showing a good return by now and so will a few of the up and coming mobile games.
But, Nintendo has all but deserted the home console gamer who bought the Wii U at the start.
Knowing that the NX was still two years away when they first told us about it, why would they start to wind down the games production for the Wii U by the end of 2015?
Something is not right at Nintendo Towers.
Ok we have Starfox, but that was a Christmas release delayed so they would have something to release this quarter. The just released Zelda was a rush job to fill the gap left by the new Zelda.
As are the Select games.
Yes the mobile games are OK and maybe Nintendo should jump on that bandwagon, if they see a profit, but not at their core gamers expense.
Is Nintendo spending the profit I generated for them by buying Wii U games and investing it in mobile gaming?
It should be reinvested in more Wii U games.
Something is not right at Nintendo Towers. Or did I say that already.
Interesting how everyone suddenly gave up hope for Animal Crossing Wii U... Oh well. I gave up hope too.
@Boidoh I didn't and I still think its possible, considering since amiibo festival, Nintendo already has a lot of code fleshed out.
I'm curious to see what this "connection between the smart device application and the world of Animal Crossing on dedicated video game systems" means.
@seb5049 Well for me personally I put over 700 hours in New Leaf and every minute of it was spent at home with the 3DS being plugged in. For someone like me a console version would be VASTLY superior, not to mention the increased technical capabilities allow for a game that is bigger and quite possibly better!
My mom will love Animal Crossing on her phone!
@TruenoGT I respect him even more now.
