It seems to be the case that timing video game ratings can be a struggle for many developers, and often leads to the game being outed ahead of an official confirmation. We've seen this numerous times in the past ahead of Virtual Console releases, and most recently, with the premature announcement that Minecraft would be coming to Wii U.
Similar to these previous occurrences, a rating has recently surfaced on the ESRB website that indicates Super Mario Galaxy will be arriving on the Wii U eShop. Considering the popularity of this game and the fact that it's sequel is already available on the eShop, this really was an inevitability; but it's still a pleasant surprise, nonetheless. No release date or window is listed, but given how instances like this have gone down in the past, it's probably going to arrive sometime in the near future.
What do you think? Will you be picking this up? What other Wii games would you like to see on the eShop? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

RE4!
@idork99 Didn't Europe already get that?
Hm. This is probably a Christmas day release on the eShop.
@DarthNocturnal Yeah, that game is pretty good! ^^ PM TTYD as well... (but that's on le gc, sadly). I'd love to see it on the VC for the Wii U as well.
Re4
This is cool but no news except Mother 3 announcement or Final Fantasy Explorers update can beat my hype for the smash direct on Tuesday :3
Just start bringing everything to Wii-U at a decent price and im sure alot of people would be happy. But stop this 19.99 double dipping and go maybe 14.99 or a little less on these titles. This is a good title im sure will sell a decent amount. But since I still have a wii I fire up and a copy of mario Galaxy I wouldnt be getting for Wii-U
Europe will get this next week ... meanwhile NA will have to wait til 2022
If it doesn't have a launch sale like the first Wii re-releases then most likely not interested, personally.
I'll be passing this one up. I've enjoyed all the 3D Marios thoroughly to date, but Galaxy 1 is just missing that charm that made the other games memorable for me.
I want to see Wario Land: Shake It!, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Mario Sports Mix on the NA eShop.
I have both SMGs for Wii. Have yet to play either. Just comes down to me 1. dwindling down my backlog and 2. having the motivation to boot up the Wii Menu...
I bought all three Operation Rainfall Wii games (Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, The Last Story) back when they came out here in North America, and would love to see them in the Wii U's VC. Not because I'd necessarily purchase them again, but because I think they deserve the exposure and it would be a lovely treat for Nintendo consumers. (Yes, I am aware of some releases in EU and it makes me sadfase they haven't been released here. Even if I'm mistaken about the market here for them — the works already done.)
@cheesesteak7: Have you tried them on Dolphin? Wii games are just lovely on it. You already own the hardware and game; you wouldn't be depriving Nintendo of any money by doing so.
I'm surprised they didn't put this one out first actually. I have the physical copy but I would consider getting the eShop version and trade my physical copy in towards a new Wii U game (if nothing else to free up some space on my shelf)
As far as ones I would like to see in the NA eStore, Zack and Wiki, Okami, the RE remakes (since the Wii U didn't get the HD remakes) Warioware: Smooth Moves, Fortune Street, Pikmin 1 & 2 are the ones that come to mind.
I was baffled at Nintendo releasing the second galaxy game before the first. Since Japan got the first game some time ago, I thought it was inevitable the west would too.
If Nintendo of America released Wii games again. Looking at you Xenoblade Chronicles.
I thought Mario Galaxy was already out on the Wii U VC?
@GH05T I did, too. I had to double check when I saw this!
Already got a physical copy of the game. So no thanks ....
My physical copy doesn't work anymore, coincidentally my four year old son has been playing & enjoying SMG2 in Wii Mode over the weekend. I remember playing Galaxy for the first time... Incredible
They remade Xenoblade Chronicles and Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3ds. I want Galaxy on the 3DS.
Just remember, they gave us Metroid Prime Trilogy and Mario Galaxy 2 first, and much cheaper. However... I would like an eShop copy of this to accompany Galaxy 2. Got too many Wii discs in my library.
@Rob_mc_1 well then, doubt it would happen but I'll let you dream on :/
Hmm Wii games in the eshop id like to see are House of the dead 2, ghost squad, Namco museum mega mix, Data East classics, dragons lair trilogy, excite truck, Wii sports resort, mad world, carnival games, Lego Star Wars, Mario party 8/9, animal crossing city folk, metal slug anthology, far cry vengeance, marble mania, sonic colors, The Bigs, resident evil 4, scarface, big brain academy,MLB Power pros, and many more!!
Super Paper Mario and this! That would be awesome! It's ridiculous how Japan has the first SMG already, and we have the sequel! It seems like NOA has been kind of cheating us out on Virtual Console lately😒
@idork99 I've got RE4 downloaded but haven't started playing it yet. Is it good? I've never played a Resident Evil game before but got in a spur of the moment. I'm such a wimp when it comes to horror games/movies but I find them really fascinating, silent hill too.
@Shazirah nope, but I'm installing it now! Thanks so much, never even heard of it. Well, besides the old codename for the GC...lol.
...So I'm not the only one who thought this was already out. >.>
I thought it was available already as well.
Do some countries really not has Xenoblade Chronicals from the Wii available on their eshop for the Wii U?
I have a physical copy of this so no intention of double dipping
I really wish Nintendo would add GamePad support so you can play on there without needing a Wii Remote. For a game like SMG everything could be done on the pad with shake mapped to a button and the pointing to collecting stars mapped to the touch screen.
I feel as though such core signature Wii games should have been added from the beginning - the 'what will be next?' speculation is non-existant for me. I'd only double up on my Wii games if the price was far lower (like I did with XC at £8.99, which seemed like a steal given how over-priced they usually are online). Broken record time, but they really should have a dedicated department to churn these out as many who do have massive collections on previous systems would only get into it in an all or nothing sense (like myself).
In my opinion the first smg is a much better game than smg2 so yeah, thats good news. But in the great spirit of a gamer who is never satisfied: Ninendo, bring us Super Paper Mario, Last Story and Mad World next please!
No. Unless the games get a graphics face lift and are in HD.
Nintendo did not think the Wii needed to be an HD machine because not many people had HD TV's, so they did not make it future proof, and the HD future was only a couple of years away.
So to churn these old games out for the Wii U without reworking them into HD is just a money spinner for Nintendo.
I bought the Wii U to play HD games. If Nintendo want to keep its gamers happy until the NX arrives and stop them drifting to another console, and they don't think these games are worth the investment to update the graphics, then they should be free.
If it's an HD of course
@zool What a ridiculous statement.
@BulkSlash Do you have three hands? Because otherwise this wouldn't work.
@cheesesteak7
Same here!
If one thing has been surprisingly slower than the Wii U's virtual console, it has been the eshop re-releases of Wii titles.
Xenoblade Chronicles is one game I desperately want on the eshop because I will not buy a New 3DS for one game especially if its a de-master, or shelving out alot of money for a new copy of the old disc regardless if X has become my favorite Wii U title.
And a few other titles I haven't been able to get yet like The Last Story, Fire Emblem, and so on.
It was not a statement, it was a reply to the question asked and a comment giving a reason for the reply.
'Shrare your thoughts in the comments below.'
Rare Replay post made later that day.
Coincidence? I think not. Let's look deeper...
Rare has 4 letters. Do you know what else has 4 letters? Mario, if you take away the O.
Mari is a presenter on Smosh Games. Smosh recently made a movie and it flopped. Everyone do the flop. asdfmovie. asdf has four letters. You know what else has 4 letters?
RARE
Rare Replay for Wii U confirmed, Mitch Vogel = Illuminati
I'm so sorry
Speaking of Mario you guys in Europe will be getting Mario Tennis for the N64 and New Super Mario Bros.
I already own it on disk. Would totally double dip for an (admittedly unlikely) wiimote-free version, though.
@BulkSlash Actually, pointing could be mapped to the gyroscope instead, which would be awesome.
Still surprised that we have the second game but not the first.
sigh You tricked me there for a second.
Hey NoA,where's RE4??? If the game is in HD I'll get it.
Hmm Wii games in the eshop id like to see are House of the dead 2, ghost squad, Namco museum mega mix, Data East classics, dragons lair trilogy, excite truck, Wii sports resort, mad world, carnival games, Lego Star Wars, Mario party 8/9, animal crossing city folk, metal slug anthology, far cry vengeance, marble mania, sonic colors, The Bigs, resident evil 4, scarface, big brain academy,MLB Power pros, and many more!!
The motion control for the Mario Galaxy games weren't annoying like the other Wii titles but I still wish they made it possible to use the GamePad or Pro Controller to play these old games. Mario Galaxy 2 is enough for me.
@itzdanburton Jet fuel can't melt steel beams, man.
@DarthNocturnal Super Paper Mario better than Super Mario Galaxy? You're kidding, right?
