At the time of writing, it looks unlikely that Capcom will be reeling out a new Mega Man game to celebrate the series' 25th Anniversary, with free PC title Street Fighter X Mega Man and various collectibles being the offerings dished out by the publisher.
Yet while the officially sanctioned fan game released last year — as it was merely polished by Capcom staffers — was a decent if flawed effort, another PC fan title creeps closer that promises to give fans some classic Mega Man fare. In the works for a good amount of time, Mega Man Unlimited has such delicious pixel art that it was once mistaken by Capcom for its own work on a website for Mega Man 10, prompting its main man Philippe "MegaPhilX" Poulin to be invited to a Capcom event. The project now has a solid team working on it, and has moved onto the QA testing phase.
To celebrate that progress and its march towards completion, Poulin has produced a new trailer that shows plenty of impressive footage, also accompanied by a suitably cheesy J-pop tune to set the mood. This looks rather awesome to us, and we advise all Blue Bomber fans to check it out below.

Never played megaman, i may check this out
You posted this and I'm MAD THAT I CAN'T PLAY IT RIGHT NOW.
It's too bad Capcom has no idea how to successfully modernise the Mega Man franchise. I mean, yes they were great on NES and SNES, but for god sake Capcom you're supposed to be game developers - try making a good core Mega Man game outside of those system requirements.
I've been seeing MegaPhil's work ever since Unlimited was called 10 and was merely an animation. Can't wait for it to be released!
Even though it is good for fans to be so involved with a company and for relations to be good, Capcom still needs to develop their own games. Mega Man is what put Capcom on the map, and they need to look after their own franchise without relying on hand-outs from fans. I'm interested in this, but I would be more interested in a fully official game.
First things first...that platypus robot is the best thing ever
I also, like LuigiMan200, followed Phils work since it was first announced and im really stunned by the progress he made.
But to be honest, i dont know if i should be happy or sad about the fact, that fans come up with better games then the original devs themselves.
It baffles me to no end how capcom is treating their IPs, other than Street Fighter.
MegaMan gets completely obliterated although thanks to him, capcom became what it is today. Resident Evil got an identity crisis, not knowing if it wants to be a survival horror game or a coop action shooter. Devil May Cry went completely down the drain with its westernisation, not establishing a new fanbase while punching the old fanbase in the face.
While Street Fighter gets milked to no end, it at least gets enough attention. The onky IP thats treated fairly well is Monster Hunter.
I once was an absolute capcom fanboy, buying everything with the capcom logo almost blindly. Nowadays, capcom is but a shadow of its former self, neglecting to listen to their fans and, to be honest, doing the exact opposite of what their fanbase wants.
You see this Capcom!?! THIS shows just how much your fans care! Get off your lazy rumps and make a next-gen Mega Man already! It can't be THAT difficult!
The Blue Bomber must return. Come on Capcom!
Wow!
been waiting for this
This is looking absolutely fantastic, and I really hope that Capcom gets a major kick in the balls from this and realizes that people really do care for Mega Man and we can't take any more of this crap.
This looks absolutely awesome, and the bosses totally have the Megaman look while still being fresh and unique and unlike previous Megaman bosses.
It's too bad Capcom is more worried about squeezing more and more cash out of it's loyal cusomers via dlc than providing quality stand alone content such as this.
I can't believe they can't figure out what their fans want.
Normally, I'm not a PC gamer. After seeing that trailer, I AM DETERMINED TO GET THAT GAME.
Capcom should publish this everywhere.
From the trailer seems like no reason not too.
Now that looks pretty sick.
Anyone else concerned about the missing buster cannon in the last 30 seconds?
That looks AMAZING!
It disappoints me to no end how much Capcom trashes this franchise. I hope this fan game is a huge success.
Looks great and pretty intense. However.....there's something about it (the level design so far and characters) that doesn't seem very "Capcom" to me......so I have a "wait and see" attitude.
Seems like Mega Man will never evolve, there are so many 8-Bit Mega Man games out there that the only Mega Man games I think that actually did evolve were MM7, MM8, MM & B, and the arcade games which is sad considering I want more games like those.
It is not that the fans make better Megaman games than Capcom itself. It is that the fans make Megaman games while Capcom does not.
I guess they will keep supporting these efforts, as it gives the fans what they want, they are cheaper to make and have a lot more soul than they could hope to pour, specially now that Inafune is gone.
@retro_player_22 I think the 8-bit style and core gameplay formula of the classic games are pretty much ingrained into Mega Man's identity now, to the point that trying to "modernize" the series would result in it not really feeling like Mega Man. I'd much prefer that Capcom reserve that sort of thing for their many spinoff Mega Man series (such as X, which essentially was originally an attempt to "evolve" the Mega Man franchise).
This is pretty cool for fans of the Mega Man series since Capcom doesn't seem to want to make a new game themselves. I can't say that I am a huge Mega Man fan myself. The soundtracks for each game are incredibly catchy though!
Wow. Capcom bring Mega Man Unlimited and Street Fighter X Mega Man to the 3DS!
I love me some Rockman but... I'm getting kinda tired of 8bit megaman...
Wish they had somebody else do the actually drawing of Megaman....
capcom cant make games like this anymore.. capcom this is easy money for you!!!
What, no kickstarter? Looks great, I will definitely play this.
@Pierceton
How come? I thought it looked good. That's how I imagine him looking, and really how he always has looked. Plus that may just be concept art as the trailer said it was "in development" if there is anything that people don't like about it I'm sure they'd change it. But personally I think he looks great, same with the actual gameplay too.
I second the Capcom needs to support Mega Man better. I don't know if it's sour grapes with Inafune or way but if that's the case they need to get over it.
Wow this looks fantastic! Lol all we need now is for someone to make a fan Mega Man Legends game and maybe Capcom will come to their senses.
"At the time of writing, it looks unlikely that Capcom will be reeling out a new Mega Man game to celebrate the series' 25th Anniversary..."
Sorry if I'm being ignorant but how is that the case? It's barely May. There's plenty of time for a game to come out. Also I don't understand why people get so upset demanding a Mega Man game for the 25th Anniversary. If they give us an awesome game: cool, if they give us collectibles and stuff: cool.
Nintendo did nothing for Metroid 25th and nobody made a big fuss over it.
Game looks awesome, I want to play it now
This looks good and all and Capcom is seemingly dropping the ball with this Mega Man anniversary stuff, but I'm not sure I agree in general that Capcom fans somehow make better Capcom games. I mean, Mega Man 9 and 10 were both excellent. People forget pretty quickly.
@sweetiepiejonus It's not about how he looks but the quality of the drawing itself and I am in no way trying to downplay how awesome the gameplay looks in anyway!!! ( just to get that out there) The drawing itself looks like Megaman but is just a little rough. I understand that it is still in development but I would personally leave the drawings of him out anyways because they aren't really necessary for an 8 bit game like this.
As for why Capcom hasn't released a game, I believe it is a matter of direction. After the creator of Megaman left the company I think they just lost direction entirely. The franchise wasn't going in the best direction and I think that they were looking to do a reboot of sort and still are but they don't know were to go. It is easy to be mad at Capcom and complain that if a fan can make a game then you should be able to make a game but if they just put out a new 8 bit game I don't think that it would do as well. ( not saying I don't love 8 bit megaman but I am just looking at it from a marketing pov) They are looking for a way to bring Megaman back into the mainstream market with some kind of AAA game you can see that from the cancelled FPS Megaman game. I do hope that they figure it sooner than later before they don't make one for another 25 years like they did Kid Icarus but who knows I guess they could just hate there fans but I think that there is a lot more to it than that.
DISCLAIMER!
I am not trying to be rude in anyway just objective.
