Tetris, soccer and a VC double whammy!

Brace yourself for a truly rare week: Virtual Console receives two games today, putting it level-pegging with WiiWare and DSiWare for the first time in ages. What's occurring this week? Read on and find out.

Virtual Console

Magical Drop II (NeoGeo, 900pts) – A cutesy colour-coded puzzler from way back, this one found its way to North America first so we'll have a full review for you very soon.

Karnov's Revenge (NeoGeo, 900pts) – This week's NeoGeo double header is rounded out by another 2D fighter from Data East. The best part? Do well enough against the human fighters and you can take on a bull. We'll grab this game by the horns for our review shortly.

Soccer Bashi (Icon Games, 500pts) – It's Breakout with football, in the simplest terms. With stacks of stages and a level editor for you to make your own creations, we'll soon see if this hits the back of the net or just sails wide of the mark.

Sneezies (Chillingo, 500pts) – A variation on the chain reaction genre, Sneezies comes from the same stable as Angry Birds so hopefully will match that title for addictive powers. We'll have a full review soon.

Tetris Party Live (Tetris Online Inc., 800pts) – It's Tetris, it's portable and it's good, with online multiplayer modes through Nintendo WiFi Connection. If you fancy some portable block-dropping beats, have a read of our Tetris Party Live review for the full lowdown.

Rocks N' Rockets (Tik Games LLC, 500pts) – From the press release this sounds like Missile Command on the go, which could work out quite nicely, so we'll dive in and bring you a full review soon.

Press release time commencing in 5, 4, 3, 2...

This Friday sees an array of games available to download on WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare, as well as two classics on Virtual Console

29th November 2010: This Friday sees the launch of an all-time puzzle classic with a modern twist as Tetris® Party Live comes to Nintendo DSiWare. Take on a host of modes in single-player to hone your skills and then challenge up to three friends to duels and battles via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for hours of twisting and turning conundrum fun.

A hero is required to step up when meteors fall to earth in Rocks N' Rockets™ on Nintendo DSiWare. Grab hold of a rocket launcher and protect your city from the hundreds of falling rocks in this heart racing adventure.
Soccer Bashi™ arrives on WiiWare this week, with exploding blocks to fight your way past and flaming soccer balls to score with, while Sneezies requires you to pop a number of cute characters by setting off a chain-reaction of sneeze-induced bubble popping.

If you’ve ever dreamed your drawings might come to life, have a first look at the WiiWare demo* for Max & the Magic Marker where anything you draw can jump off the page and be used to chase away the purple monster rampaging through your world.

What’s more, two action packed games are available to download on Virtual Console this week. Burst balloon after balloon in the 90’s classic MAGICAL DROP II and take on the best martial arts fights the Great Grapple tournament has to offer in KARNOV’S REVENGE.

Nintendo DSiWare - Tetris® Party Live
(Tetris Online, Inc., 800 Nintendo DSi Points)
Tetris® Party Live, the latest in the classic Tetris® Party series, lets you join the party whenever and wherever you like. Challenge yourself on several exciting game modes made popular by games gone by, including Marathon (1P), Computer Battle (1P vs CPU), VS Battle (2P) and Duel Space (2P).
But the party doesn’t stop there! Take the Tetris fun online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, where you can play multiplayer Tetris against up to three other players at a time.

Nintendo DSiWare - Rocks N' Rockets™
(Tik Games, LLC, 500 Nintendo DSi Points)
Are you ready to take the hero's seat in this gripping arcade game? Civilization is threatened by a terrifying Global Multi-Phased Meteor Attack - thousands of strange rocks are hurtling towards the earth.
Your mission is to protect our cities by controlling a rocket launcher that is built to protect our city. Different types of Meteors, innovative power ups and
beautiful graphics only increase the thrill and challenge and guarantees everyone hours of non-stop action.

WiiWare - Soccer Bashi™
(Icon Games Entertainment Ltd, 500 Wii Points)
Take lasers and flaming power-balls onto the soccer pitch in Soccer Bashi™. Smash through invisible and exploding blocks on your way to scoring goal after goal, but watch out for the enemy defenders out to destroy you. Take on the nine bosses, multitudes of 3D defender enemies and 90 game levels over game modes including Arcade and Tournament. You’ll also be able to create your own levels and tournaments and pick up Power-Ups including multiple balls, bats and bombs.

WiiWare - Sneezies
(Chillingo, 500 Wii Points)
Sit back in your favourite armchair and enjoy soothing, relaxed gameplay, hilarious sound effects, elegant graphics and graceful melodies.
Drop a burst of sneezing powder into the field of floating Sneezies and watch as they sneeze themselves out of their bubbles in a beautiful chain reaction.
Try to rescue as many Sneezies as you can in one go, through 45 relaxing levels in Classic Mode, or in the 15 Challenge Mode levels. Post your high scores online for free, straight from the game, and see how you stack up against other Sneezies players around the world.

Virtual Console - MAGICAL DROP II
(D4 Enterprise, Neo Geo, 900 Wii Points)
Revisit the 90’s with this puzzle action game released by Data East in 1996. The rules are simple: control the clown to grab and throw balloons as they appear on screen. Line up three or more balloons of the same colour in a vertical row and watch them burst. Use Special balloons, Arrow balloons, Rainbow balloons and more to create combos, whether battling a host of comical characters in VS CPU Mode, or taking on the challenge of Puzzle Mode. Both modes support player-versus-player action, so you can take a trip back to 1996 and bring all your friends with you.

Virtual Console - KARNOV'S REVENGE
(D4 Enterprise, Neo Geo, 900 Wii Points)
Return to the Great Grapple martial arts tournament in this fast-paced sequel to the well-loved Fighter's History. This time, thirteen combatants have emerged to test their skills against the best of the best in a series of dramatic showdowns; among them, bosses Clown and Karlov from the original game return as playable characters. Use a wide range of secret attacks and a weak spot system that assigns a vulnerable area to each fighter, and if you fight well enough the bull from the bonus stage of the Data East classic Karate Champ will also make a special appearance!
As the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop are continually updated with exciting and refreshing games and applications, make sure you keep checking the Nintendo Channel, Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop for all the latest news and releases on already available and upcoming Virtual Console, WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare titles.

The portal also provides step-by-step tutorials explaining how to connect the Wii console to the Internet and how to download WiiWare games, as well as a video showing how to use Nintendo Points. Visit for all the details. Downloaded games can be saved to Wii's internal memory or SD card and added to the console's Wii Menu or SD Card Menu for anytime easy access.

  • WiiWare demos offer players the ability to trial select WiiWare games without using up any of their Wii Points, giving players the enjoyment of testing out the game before ultimately deciding whether to download the full version of the game or not. WiiWare demos are currently available for download via a dedicated list on as well as on the Wii Shop Channel itself.

Another two 500 points games for WiiWare this week. Seems that Nintendo noticed that many people buy games because they're cheap and not because they're good.

Its great to see 2 VC games but I'm waiting on Mario Party 2 which is released sometime this month. Just tell us what day it is, Nintendo!

WaveBoy said:

I have zero Nostalgia towards the NeoGeo other than playing the first Metal Slug, a couple of the Fatal Fury's and Samurai Showdown at the Arcades.

So NeoGeo releases don't exactly excite me, and I'm out of luck anyways considering this is for UK only. But it's still a nice suprise to see that the VC is alive(somewhat) and still kicking...kicking with it's broken legs.

Yep, tis' the season to be jolly.

I love these obscure Neo Geo fighters. They remind of when I was a kid and I'd come accross them in places like cinemas, airports or leisure centres. At the time you'd be obsessed with Street Fighter 2 but the competition was always fascinating. You'd never heard of them before, they looked pretty cool, end up being kind of fun and then you never see them again. Playing these types of titles is just what the VC is for.

Its been a while since we got two VC games in one week. The Neo Geo games seem to be coming (relatively speaking) thick and fast at the moment, hopefully there are plenty more to come.

Hang on, I thought Cave Story was coming this week! Well, I'll be interested to see how Soccer Bashi turns out as I do like a good game of Breakout.

Ah, my mistake I left off the zero in my mind. Good thing is using my Club Nintendo stars I'm not out of pocket for it or Flowerworks, which I just bought last night.

Tetris Party Live and Soccer Bashi (Arkanoid variant) are instas. Magical Drop too I think.

Cave Story 10th Dec

The best thing about this week's stuff is that it's only one week until next week's stuff.

outrun2sp said:

I would have got Karnovs Revenge if its 60hz.

Nice little fighting game with good 2 in ones.

Have the saturn version.

bboy2970 said:

Ouch, sucks that you guys got Tetris for 8 dollars instead of 5. That's a little surprising to see 2 VC games though. Ian't Cave Story coming next week? I don't think they said this week. I could be wrong though...

Raylax said:

Breakout + Football + Giant Flying Demonic Flameskulls?

...I had a dream like that once.

Link79 said:

Dang why can't we get two VC games more often!? There's plenty of them rated for release. It's probably just because christmas is getting close.
Here's hoping the U.S. gets equal treatment.

outrun2sp said:

Funny ive noticed that in france, spain, portugal people dont mind 50hz at all. This comes from playing allot of the King of Fighters players.

Just look at Ikaruga on GC, a hardcore game clearly not suited to the casual gamer yet released as a 50hz (casual) version for europe

Perhaps we are just a small island to nintendo.

cheapogamer4life said:

TPL for 800np's. :0

Sorry you guys got the short end of the stick on that one, but I think its worth it for your looking for an alternative to the cart versions.

Did they even release those over there?

TingLz said:

Once again people put quantity over quality when it comes to VC games. So sad

LuWiiGi said:

Where's my Cave Story and Shantae? Oh well, still a good week by normal standards.

Scottie said:

Cave Story is coming out next Friday 10th December for the WiiWare thank god!

WarioFan63 said:

The Tetris Party Live thing may be a mistake, the PR says it's 800 but NoE's website is saying 500. I'd say you guys should keep an eye out when the games actually hit.

CanisWolfred said:

Karnov Revenge looks interesting.

Also, Cave Story doesn't come until December 10th, so be patient.

Ristar42 said:

50Hz Neo Geo games equal an automatic 'no' for me. I hope the arcade Super Hang-On gets release, SEGA were pretty good at bringing their other arcade games from Japan.

@outrun2sp - yep, Ikaruga, another Import I can no longer play on my PAL Wii thanks to Nintendo's 'performance enhancing' updates... At least I still have the GC.

Yoshi_2000 said:

I'm with mario party fan, Nintendo should really give us a solid release date Mario party 2.

kitroplious said:

@Sean Aaron (#8) - Speaking of Club Nintendo, the North America branch got updated today with new Super Mario Bros. Premium hand towel rewards. Just want to mention posting news about that.

Anyways, very good week for EU for the VC!

KeroKero_Cola said:

Why is it that NeoGeo are the only games to be released on the Virtual Console as of late? Rather annoying if you ask me.

Bass_X0 said:

Annoying how? Its largely been neglected on the VC in all and its only recently its trying to catch up. Anyway, these two games were ported to the Super Famicom; would you rather have had those as imports instead of the originals?

Bass_X0 said:

Yes Betagam. 50hrz = bad. I believe you may have mentioned something like that once or twice before. And I have no doubt you will be mentioning it once or twice in the future too.

Alfred_ENG said:

@Bass it's 50Hz not "hrz". Betagam is a great guy standing up for PAL gamers. I would like all my games to be 60Hz so that they play on my television right. It's no fun buying a game and having it not work. Merry Christmas.
