Why?

Oh I get it, you don't want to have this discussion, so you'd rather not let anyone else have it.

Nobody has broken the rules. And it's been extremely civilised so far.

I think it's been proven consistently that both sides of this debate need to be shot at this point, for the sake of the intelligence and dignity of the human race. Or at least send them both to Extremist Island and don't give them a way back to society.

That being said, while I refuse to comment on this, I will point out that Nintendo lately has done an excellent job at having more focus on female characters and the like without acting like it's a big deal and they are waaaaay ahead of most of the industry in this regard.

I just don't think it belongs on a forum about gaming, especially on a section specifically meant to be about a games console. And just because the discussion has been civil (from your viewpoint, at least) up to this point doesn't mean it'll stay that way for long.

Sure, it's been posted in the wrong forum, I'll give you that.

But doesn't belong on a forum about gaming? Come on. The whole debate is around the use of tropes against women in video games.

I will also say, sexism in fiction has been used frequently as some sign of someone being a bad person. Which is a bit silly as if you want to be REALLY nickpick-y, most people in creative works have done something like that, at least arguably so (though obviously on the other side of the spectrum, people can overthink anything). Especially when stereotypes (or archetypes more accurately) can be a good starting off point sometimes (and also because video game plots didn't matter back in the day and got big during the 80s). Honestly I'm personally more interested in sexism as just another form of critique more than anything beyond that (since sexism frequently just leads to disappointing writing for female characters that make them less compelling or important for no good reason).

Quite frankly, it's unfortunately way too late to have any debates on this in any public area. It's just poisoned and awful so I'd prefer to just make random statements that I feel are vaguely relevant.

Wait, people are actually taking this seriously? This is like complaining about Popeye cartoons. Not only does it completely miss the point of the cartoon (or, well, game in this case), it's outright false and looks only at the cosmetic aspects of the characters instead of, you know, the actual characters and what they do within the story.

Hard to take the "is game X sexist" seriously when this is how your government is behaving...

"I thought you might like to hear a man's voice," Senator Barry O'Sullivan's voice boomed during a fiery Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday morning.

This was to set the tone of the day's hearing where there was a much more aggressive edge to the Main Committee Room in Canberra than the day before.

When Labor senator Penny Wong accused Senator O'Sullivan of bullying and berating Professor Triggs, he shot back: "Oh dear, oh dear, Penny, settle down."

Later, Senator Wong accidentally began referring to the Attorney-General's Department's secretary, Chris Moraitis, as "Mr Moriarty". After apologising, she blamed it on reading too much Conan Doyle.

Senator MacDonald replied: "I am glad I did not say that. I would have been accused of other things, but anyhow, carry on."

"Reading the classics?" Senator Wong asked.

"You might have been accused of sexism, Senator Macdonald," Senator Brandis quipped.

"How is reading Conan Doyle sexist?" Senator Wong replied.

By the afternoon, he was telling Professor Triggs how he wanted her to answer the question.

"This is what I want you to do," he instructed. "I want you to speak in first person, you're talking about it in the third person."

Women could be heard quietly gasping in the audience.

"You might talk to your wife like that but not to senators," Sarah Hanson-Young schooled Senator MacDonald.

..... there may just perhaps be some slightly bigger fish to fry

Oh god get over yourself. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to participate in the thread.

At the end of the day, regardless of what side of the fence one sways in this debate, there is one thing that can be agreed by everyone and that's the Koopalings are charming, cute, delightful, witty, sneaky and amazing.

They've managed to revive their reputation of classic, cult status legends and are aware of the fandom they generate.

Considering the fact that all of those people are the descendants of criminals, that was a rather civil exchange

Anita Sarkeesian is a fraud. She has some few decent points, but she piles on a whole lot of BS statements as well. She gives feminism a bad name!

I find her videos and arguments to be well-researched and presented. I cannot see how the word "fraud" can be applied to her.

I also don't understand why people get so defensive about what she's saying. I have yet to hear her say: playing or liking or making these games makes you a bad person - in fact in her later videos she says that up-front to try to get through to thickos who apparently don't understand that. What she's saying is, can we please stop having these tired-out cliches and pretending like the only people who play games are men and that it's not important how we portray women in games. The overreaction of some gamers to this is amazing and I can only assume it's because they cannot be bothered to hear an argument before forming an opinion on it. And regardless of how you feel about what she says demonising her or threatening her or anyone who agrees with her is NOT ON.

She criticizes the characterization of Ms. Pacman but the only thing she isn't wearing herself on the video is a bow...

This, so much.
I feel like most claims of objectification in the past couple of months of some female characters were made solely based off appearance and not the actual character.
I'm so sick of saying this, but sexualization and objectification are not the same thing, at least in my book. Yes, the reason these claims are so frequent is because most male characters have not been put in the same light. I'm not gonna lie and say female characters with their boobs hanging out aren't plentiful, but how many muscled topless male characters have you seen in life? Bonus points if they're wearing a speedo. They're just as barely clothed as any female character, so why are females specifically getting the complaints? Because male sexualization is handled in a much different manner than females sexualization. If you strip down a female, it's supposed to be hot, with a man it's considered a joke. So on and so forth.
Better example, compare the reaction to Shulk's extra costume to Samus's. Pretty much speaks for itself.
I understand getting mad at inequality and double standards but if you're going to get mad, then steer your anger in the right direction. Be angry at society and the company who just happens to go along with it.
Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go into hiding to avoid all the flames and hate I probably just generated
