Sorry for posting this since there a similar thread, but this been in my head for a long time. Should we get a remake or a sequel of Super Mario Sunshine? We didn't have anything related to Sunshine for a decade.

Some random dude on Nintendo Life.

I'd buy Sunshine HD in a second. Never got round to playing the original and I think the odds of disliking it are rather small!

It'd also be that sorta graphical level that'd be fairly easy to remake because they could leave almost everything the same but just redo the assets.

...well, the last thread is over 6 months old.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, but a remake wouldn't work as-is because of the lack of pressure-sensitive triggers (or something like that).

Well it kinda could if you separate full squirt and running squirt into two separate buttons, but it'd be a less than ideal solution.

I guess they could just make us press one of the R buttons for the weak squirt and both for the strong one.

A sequel, of course. There are already too many remakes/remasters/ports in this generation. But personally, I'd prefer a new "Galaxy" (not Galaxy 3, but a game with new ideas/concept).

Also, I find it curious how back when it was released, everyone was like: "Woah, what a crappy game, it doesn't even come close to 64. worst Mario ever!" and now everyone seems to love it. Maybe that's why there was never a sequel.

If Sunshine gets a remake, it would need a complete re-haul. Design-wise, it is by far the weakest of the 3D Mario games. It also has an immense amount of filler, and in general doesn't really respect the player's time at all. The farther through the game that you get, the more the quality dips, to the point where the game honestly doesn't feel up to the 3D Mario Standard. I feel sorry for any poor soul that tried to 100% this game. It just feels rushed.

There's so many aspects of Sunshine that aggravate me. There's the randomness of some of the shines that require the player to randomly spray the ground until they find a secret shine on the ground. There's the harder-to-find blue coins that feel ridiculous in where they're placed. There's that stupid 3-boat ride to that isolated isle in the hub that you have to have Yoshi to get to, and you have to endure a painfully slow boat ride with nothing to do for a prolonged period of time. And what follows it? Another slow and boring ride on a leaf where you collect red coins. Then there's the dumb watermelon moving thing, the level where you have to randomly get a Durian from one of the dispensers so you can get Yoshi out of his egg, and then there's that awful, unspeakable Pachinko machine level.

And the thing is, the high quality content just doesn't make up for the lows, especially when you consider that this is a 3D Mario game. There are so many design decisions that just boggle the mind when it comes to the levels. And it's a crying shame, because Sunshine offers the best moveset Mario has ever had. Sunshine feels like a game where Nintendo got all the little things right (the way Mario controlled) but completely missed the big picture (the level design).

This is coming from someone who experienced Sunshine as his first 3D Mario game. Compared to 64, Galaxy 1&2, and 3D Land/World, it just doesn't compare. And I think Nintendo is aware of its various problems and would refrain from simply remaking it. I do think it could get a rocking sequel, though.

Here's a cool video that goes over the game's strengths and weaknesses that can be quite enlightening:

I wholly disagree with the notion that the game gets worse as it goes on. Pinata Village and Noki Bay, the endgame, were some of my favorite levels in a Mario game. I really like how ambitious the game was. Just think; it's an open world platformer with a huge range of interaction with the world, in 2002. There's a level of acceptable brokenness and bugginess and poor performance there. I find some of the jankier mechanics a bit endearing in that sense.

I really liked the secret collectables hidden in Sunshine. It was the most fleshed out 3D Mario world. I really loved how on the gamecube games like Sunshine and Double Dash had consistent skyboxes like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess. I really enjoy the sense of place that provides.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Yeah, this is basically how I've felt about the game since completing it 100 percent. I expect Nintendo to improve on some of the design flaws if they were to remake Sunshine (like they did with Wind Waker and Majora's Mask), but there's too many problems for me to see how they could think it's worth remaking. I'd only want to see a return to Sunshine's gameplay if they were making a sequel.

A sequel would be better. Remakes are almost always pointless.

We saw all these other islands around Delfino during the intro movie, so maybe Mario can go to one (or all?) of the other ones in a sequel? Just give FLUDD some new nozzles and we'd be all set!

SuperWiiU

I would like a HD remaster as I was never able to play the entire game on Gamecube. A remake would be going to far, then I'd rather just see a sequel.

LavaTwilight

I'll be satisfied seeing it come to VC, hopefully the gamecube can get some VC lovin' this E3. Remake? No point. A sequel would be awesome but what essentially are we remaking? A return to FLUDD? Or the Isle Delfino? If you look in the opening sequence there are other islands nearby that could create a sense of expanding on the original. I suppose, in theory, only the Plaza would need to be copied from the Gamecube, as the levels branched off from there. The theme-park would need to come back of course.

I for one enjoyed Sunshine. Sure there were some awkward moments but I find that with most games. And the flaws mentioned above are comparatively minor when you think of some of the bugs in other games, Mario or otherwise.

A a remake? Or remastered?

EDIT: AH? Well, @SuperWiiU said it. I second it. It should be much better idea than a remake.

I'd rather see an original Mario game.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, a remake in the style of Super Mario 64 DS would be fantastic, especially with playable Luigi and Wario on Isle Delfino.

So if it was done like that, it'd be cool.

On the other hand... I would also want a semi sequel to the game. Not a direct sequel in the same location with the exact same mechanics, but a game which continues the Sunshine trend of Marioising a realistic type of location and having Mario and co explore it with some of jetpack like contraption.
