I think you're giving developers too much credit.

First step in getting 3rd parties back is moving consoles and creating a big enough install base that 3rd parties feel their game will sell. Nintendo needs to have a game that has consoles flying off the shelves. They are hoping Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros will be the games that have people lining up to pick up the console.

If the remaining Wii Sports are released, I'd think the following bundle would have consoles flying off the shelves:

32GB Wii U, Wiimote, Wii Sports Club, MK8(could also release one with Smash Bros in place of MK8).

No, i don't think it can anymore. The third party ship has sailed for good. Only indies can "save" the Wii U. As Nintendo themselves aren't doing enough. I'm still quite sure we are gonna see a new console by 2015-2016 or Nintendo will have to make a new version of Wii U with some drastic changes. At this rate Sony's gonna be the #1 on home console space in Japan. That's saying something considering Nintendo captured that market with the Wii.

Only when Nintendo makes its online platfrom viable; user accounts, cross platform buy, support of (every type) dlc etc. then will developers come back.

I think there will come a time when it makes sense for 3rd parties to develop for the Wii U. It might be after Zelda U is released next year. It might actually work in Nintendo's favor if the market is indeed contracting- I still think there's a chance that while PS4, Xbone will be ahead of the Wii U- it might not be by a huge margin in a year. So, by not developing for the Wii U, they will be ignoring a substantial part of the next gen market.

Of course it's possible; lots of unpredictable things could happen and some predictable ones.

Predictable: Wii U sales increase on the back of Mario Kart 8, which is more likely than anything we know about outside of Zelda to drive a buying spree.

Unpredictable (or not): a contraction in revenue amongst big publishers because not enough people are jumping on the new Sony/MS consoles to justify continued development of big budget games in existing franchises. Studios are literally betting their futures on a handful of sequels. I have a feeling Ubisoft could be the next casualty of this emerging economic reality. Interesting times!

Not too late but it would only be the usual fare we're subjected to. EA would give us a FIFA port and publishers would start raiding their PS360 back catalogues for ports. Eventually some 'exclusives' would be released and they'd all be clones of Nintendo games or kiddified versions of popular games.
PS3's comeback should give people some hope that Nintendo can shift a hell of a lot more units if they continue to support the Wii U but Nintendo don't look like they're going to give it a chance.

@Marre35 do you think 3rd parties aren't developing for Wii U because of DLC, user accounts and cross platform buying? 3rd parties are the ones who are refusing to put DLC on the system, not Nintendo. Cross platform buying reduces the number of sales a publisher can get from the same game and user accounts don't affect sales of 3rd party games.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

even if Nintendo doesn't I believe that super smash bros will be more then enough to satisfy us

If anyone thinks 3rd Parties will never release a Wii U game again really doesn't understand the market. There is a chance for Wii U, there is always a chance. Heck there is a chance OUYA changes thier store and UI to increase their draw for Indie Developers

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

in my opinion WiiU will have a comeback from non-indie third parties only if:
1. Nintendo pays the third parties in cash for them to make games
2. the WiiU somehow get a third party game to save it making it look attractive(let's be serious as long as Nintendo saves its own consoles the third parties won't be motivated because they'll think they can't outsell Nintendo in its own console)
3. all the other consoles fall and get discontinued

and, also in my opinion, the only possible option is 2. but it will be nearly impossible to happen anyway.

Okay, first of all, the Wii U controller isn't that unique, it can't do much that the DS/3DS or Wii could not. Second, they usually don't care because they think controller gimmicks tend to get in the way. It's not simply about not wanting to take a risk on an underperforming console, they don't even want to take a risk on a new type of controller unless it proves to be immediately useful.

And 1 could argue that the GamePad is more useful that Motion Controls as it can be a standard controller or something unique. Just because the DS/3DS offer similar controls doesn't make the GamePad less unique in the home console market. Wii U can offer the same controls that both Xbox One and PS4 offer and then some. Have there been developers that say they don't develop for Wii U because of the controller? Most I have heard have been Publishers don't want to support a system they can't profit on

They can make a comaback ala the Wii - in exclusives. Not in multiplatforms. But It will be interesting to see if companies like Ubisoft or Capcom release multiplatforms on the console in the future.

I like the optimism in this thread but the sad truth is third parties aren't coming back and barring Mario kart/Smash the big hitters are pretty niche and backed up by Nintendo's abysmal marketing machine.

Actually, Ubisoft has smartened up a little recently by spreading out its resources. Since 2013, they've put out Rayman Legends (mid tier), some fitness and movie games, some digital games like Trial Evolution and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, PC games like Might & Magic X and The Quest for Epic Loot, and some mobile games, in addition to heavy hitters like Just Dance and Assassin's Creed. Sure, it's putting a lot on Watch Dogs, as well as established series, but it also has Child of Light and Valiant Hearts set to release this year to rake in some extra cash and cred.

I can't wait to see your face when the third party companies do come back.
The Wii U isn't dead or dying!!!
Our heavy hitters haven't even ARRIVED yet! There are still unannounced games that could help!

They can, but only if they publish the titles, and publish exclusives. Essentially, yes Nintendo can, but only through the use of 3rd party exclusives.

3rd party support through multi-platform titles is almost all but gone with the wind. If Nintendo wants 3rd party support, they'll have to work it out the same way Sony did back in the older PS1/PS2 days. By eating a portion of the dev costs, publishing, and advertising costs, Nintendo can woo 3rd parties to make exclusives for their system. This is costly, but can pay off as it serves to correct Nintendo's "image" problem.

The GC was a step in the right direction, but never really panned out, and with the Wii, took a step backwards and erased any 3rd party momentum gain achieved by the GC.

Uh? You misquoted him, KK!

The Wii U is in a tough spot no question, and may have shaken off some of the more skittish third-parties.
But there is money to be made by someone, the indies know it, and for gamers it's good games that will motivate sales.
Same as usual.
