"Dear" here means "beloved" :/

I think the main reason those are expensive is cause at least for Conker and Banjo is that you cant get them for a Nintendo system anymore because of Microsoft owning the rights. Also as a result of Microsoft owning the rights now some stuff had to be changed I am not sure what cause I never played either of those games, but even though you get them on the XBLA there is going to be some difference and to some people that bugs them. So originals sometimes go for a high price. It might also be that those games are harder to find in Europe than the States so that would drive the price up from a European seller. Either that or you are just finding some greedy sellers.

As for the word Dear nope I never heard of it used for expensive or pricey in the US. Dear in the context that it looks like your using by US standard would mean Beloved or loved or liked alot. At least thats what I thought when I saw the heading to this thread.

That was the synonym I was going to use.
I've never heard dear=expensive in my entire life.

Me neither :/

Anyways, I suppose it's because the games are so, well, beloved. The games are some of the highest rated N64 games, and they're also somewhat hard to find (as with any old games). And because of this, people can charge far more than what the games are actually worth and still have people go for it.

@NEG, Shadx, anyone else saying 'beloved': see definition 3, and reply 5. his explanation is 'Over £25', putting this under the 'expensive' definition. :3

The words have pretty much the same meaning - when you say "dear Bob", you can paraphrase it as "precious Bob", "bob [who] I value highly" etc.

And the reason N64 games are so dear (I'm going to use that word more from now on), is mainly due to the golden rule of supply and demand.

Nintendo fans want them > The publishers don't produce the games any more > They aren't turning up on virtual console > The sellers charge accordingly.

Rest assured, the moment one of those games you mentioned (let's be honest, some of those aren't going to be showing up any time soon) are released on the virtual console, their prices may dip a little, though there's always a market for cartridges among collecters...

Dear is pricey I have British grandparents otherwise I wouldn't have got it either. I'm surprised about Conker. I bought it along with Perfect Dark brand new unopened about 5 years ago for $7 & $8 each from ebay. I still want to complete my RAREWARE N64 games collection with Killer Instinct, Mickey's Speedway, and Donkey Kong. They would need to be in box with instructions though.

The games you brought up were all in the N64's twilight era and can be somewhat hard to find (this is at least true in Mario Party 3's case). That's probably part of why they're expensive.

Mario Party 3 is rare? I used to have that. I wish I would have kept it. I'm gonna go cry now... sniff.

Yes. I think it was released only five months before the N64 died. It didn't sell as well as Conker's BFD or Banjo-Tooie, therefore someone might have a slimmer chance of acquiring a Mario Party 3 cartridge.

I'm gone. Good f*cking bye.

Neither have I. You learn something new every day.

Those games were released very late in the N64's time-span, therefore, there are limited copies compared to games released earlier in the N64's life.

Well Conker's BFD is the easy one to answer. The pinheads at Rare took years to get it finished, by the time it came out the 'M' group for the system had already mostly ran away screaming towards the PS1, Dreamcast, or the PC. Due to that, lower production, lower sales, less games on the market now given it's over a decade and people are dirty jerks who ruin stuff so even if there were say 50000 copies back then, figure it a good bit less now. I've seen terrible things happen to N64 games and others. My friends shop kept a busted Conker game some moron snapped the board to, but the cart/label were awesome. The day I happened to be in, this dirty idiot came in and he had a conker game, got basically nothing for it...why? Roach piss ate off the labels, seems water got into the case or roach pee...it was rusted, heavily very orange and brown rust covered rotting into the cover around the board...but the game itself the actual board and pins were good, quite good and it worked save and all. He took the guts, sterilized it, shoved it in the other ones great case...and put it on the shelf for someone to pay $50 for. Take that story, figure people are violent, accidental, and/or dirty and given there were few Conker games compared to say Banjo 1, Mario, or ZeldaOoT and that's why they're so unfortunately pricey.

As one of my posts recently pointed out I lucked into GBC Shantae, basically the last game for GBC that wasn't bad a year after GBA arrived. I lucked into it for $5, averages $150 in sales on ebay. That's nuts.

Yeah they're popular and in lower production, so it's like lowering supply + high demand = get ripped off $$$ unless lucky.

Not sure if the PAL one is rarer, but I couldn't have paid more than $20-30 for a complete NTSC copy a couple years ago.

lol, I didn't say I didn't believe anyone.
And of course, I had already looked it up in a real dictionary.

I was just saying I've never heard it used that way before, ever. Not even in TV shows or movies.

They should stop making sports games because they almost always have terrible resale value =p
