I mean if the DS library had great third party games like Castlevania, what's the 3DS excuse? Sure its got Persona Q but that isn't enough man! I was expecting a brand new Contra game for the 3DS, a good Sonic game for the 3DS and a Golden Sun game. Heck I expect a Wario and a Metroid game to show up as well.
The only strong thing about the 3DS is how it supports indie games a LOT unlike the DSI and that's just it. Don't get me wrong, the 3DS has awesome quality games like Kid Icarus Uprising, Fire Emblem Awakening and all but the majority of quality games is coming from Nintendo and not much of support from other devs......
I would blame this mostly on iOS being competition and 3rd parties being crazy paranoid about "WHAT IF OUR JAPANESE GAME DOESN'T SELL?!" while Atlus continues to make money off of vastly more obscure titles.
This is reason #307 why 2014 has been a not fun year for gaming.
Almost every thread you make is more insane than the last. I have so many 3DS games I don't even have time to play half of them to completion, and more than half of them are 3rd party.
Sonic has 3 games on the 3DS so far, the same number as the DS had in 8 years. Golden Sun had one DS game, and it came 8 years after the last GBA game. It's only been four years since then, and Camelot has had a fairly consistent cycle. Going back to the N64, their cycle has always been Mario Golf -> Mario Tennis -> Golden Sun, rinse and repeat. There's already been a Mario Golf and Mario Tennis on 3DS, so guess what's probably next. And yes, you should expect a Wario and Metroid game to show up.
In the meantime, here's just my retail 3rd party games, maybe consider buying one or two:
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
Bravely Default
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Rune Factory 4
Fantasy Life
Devil Survivor: Overclocked
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Persona Q
Etrian Odyssey Untold
Etrian Odyssey 4
Senran Kagura Burst
Code of Princess
Project X Zone
Would also have Samurai Warriors Chronicles, Tales of the Abyss 3D, and Dead or Alive Dimensions if they were on the eShop, and Resident Evil: Revelations and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate if I didn't have them on Wii U. Will be picking up Phoenix Wright trilogy next month. Hoping for localization announcements for Bravely Second, Final Fantasy Explorers, Dragon Quest VII 3D, Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, Etrian Odyssey 5, Devil Survivor 2: Break Record, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson soon.
There's so much great content on and coming to 3DS, it's ridiculous.
Also, instead of waiting for another bad Sonic game, just get Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Shovel Knight, and Azure Striker Gunvolt. They're all better platformers anyway.

Did we have a great castlevania game on the 3DS? No. Did we ever get a contra game? No. then if there's plenty of games that are coming up for the system, then why didn't this year give much attention for the 3DS? Also, I'm not into third party games but a lot of people complain so much that the 3DS still doesn't have the games that they want like Contra.....
Sure 3DS quality is just as good as the DS, but in terms of not getting the games we want so far....its rather underwhelming.
I wasn't aware of this huge Contra demand on 3DS, but there you have it. No Contra = 3DS doomed. Since Contra is one of Konami's highest priorities, a yearly franchise, and a mainstay of Nintendo platforms, we should all be worried about the lack of Contra.

I can't imagine what Nintendo has in store for the 3DS, they've already brought over all of their major IPs and there's nothing major that really feels "missing". I suspect at this point they'll probably work on new ideas and IPs, possibly bring back older ones, and start to take advantage of New 3DS' improvements.
The Nintendo DS has an exceptional library of games that I don't believe I'll ever experience from another system. Both third and first parties were putting plenty of quality out for the system, and due to that, it's definitely the largest library of games I personally own. The 3DS will not produce a Sonic Rush experience nor an experience like Contra 4. Its build prevent such titles from being done. That's where my interest in the 3DS's third party support takes a hit as the hardware doesn't allow for as much creativity from them as the DS had. First party has taken a hit in my experience too. I don't feel the creativity and presentation has been as solid as it is in Nintendo's releases on the DS.
First party is where I would like a lot more out of the 3DS. There is not a Metroid game on the horizon in spite of the 3DS approaching its 4 year anniversary come March. The DS had two Metroid games release prior to its two year anniversary. Now if someone enjoyed First Hunt enough, which was a demo on a game card, it arguably could have three in that period. The absence of Metroid, which I expected last year, just makes the 3DS's library look pathetic when making a direct comparison to what the DS had. The 3DS also doesn't have its own WarioWare game, which honestly shocks me much more than the absence of Metroid. WarioWare Touched! was the perfect release to showcase the potential of the DS hardware, and I felt the same could have been done early for the 3DS with a WarioWare title. 2014 would've been the perfect year to have had these two IPs release on the 3DS, because 2014 has been pretty boring up until Smash 3DS.
2015 is looking slightly better, but I want to see Nintendo represent its large franchises that haven't been covered.
Castlevania Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate was a terrible excuse for a 3DS game. Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia, all for the DS were way better. Too bad they haven't continued that series of Castlevania games on the 3DS.
I would like to be selfish this holiday and order the three DS Castlevania games off of Amazon for myself. Too many gift costs though, but I might be able to get my hands on Metroid Prime Pinball from them. I might order that game soon.

Off the top of my head, it's missing Metroid, F-Zero, an original Star Fox, Wario, Golden Sun and Advance Wars. Most of those are portable mainstays too, so I definitely feel like the 3DS is "missing" something with no Metroid or Advance Wars.
I'm sure all of those except F-Zero and Star Fox are in some planning stage or even active development though, so I'm not particularly worried.

It's also missing a new Punch-Out!! and Wario Land....It's 2D Mario btw, aka > NSMB.2 is an absolute disgrace too. what a waste. It would of been so much neater had we gotten a spiritual successor to Super Mario Land 2: 6 golden coins.
That is the main problem I have with 3DS stuff from Nintendo - Wii Technology gimped at 30fps.
Portable stuff that was made for it from the ground up was always much better. (And for the most part the stuff like that for the 3DS is much better but there is just not very much of it).
