The SN30 Pro+ looks great. My bro has the Pro but I didn't like the feel of using the analog sticks. The aesthetics are amazing but adding grips should make it more functional. It shall be mine.
The list of games is pretty incredible, assuming it's accurate. Clearly whoever put it together is aiming to include the most popular and recognizable titles. That said, I wish they could make room for these: Aero Fighters 1-3 Aggressors of Dark Kombat Alpha Mission II Andro Dunos Baseball Stars Pro Baseball Stars 2 Magical Drop II-III (unlikely since they're from data east) Pulstar Puzzle Bobble 1-2 (again, licensing problems with 3rd party - Taito in this case) Super Baseball 2020 Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy Viewpoint Windjammers (another data east title)
I'm all for getting the best picture possible on retro games, but I'm gonna pass on upscaling the N64. It was by far my least favorite Nintendo console, Mario 64 and OoT notwithstanding. I don't find the games to be playable compared to the 8- and 16-bit games which preceded them or the 2nd generation 3D games that followed. The PSOne suffers the same fate in my book.
By the way @Damo according to the GitHub page the firmware will support more than 300-500 roms. That's just the limit per folder. I assume that sub-folders could hold more, although I haven't confirmed that myself.
I'm in the cautious camp. I'll hold off until we get something official from Kevtris. In the meantime I'm enjoying playing my SNES games without roms or save states. The Super NT is amazing.
I'm hoping to find it sold somewhere else for less. It's roughly $58 shipped to the US which is a bit higher than I'm willing to go. It should be easy enough to find in a week or two.
What a wonderful story. As a dad I especially liked what Jake's father said. He looks up to his son because of how positive Jake is. I love that Jake chose to have something built that will likely survive longer than he will. God bless that kid and his family.
@FinalFrog Lunar IPS only works with .ips files. This patch didn't include one because of an "integrity checking" problem. I won't pretend to understand what that means. Applying the patch is simple enough by using "Floating IPS (Flips)" for Windows or "MultiPatch" for macOS. Just Google the name of the tool you can use. Flips works exactly like Lunar so if you're familiar with one you'll figure out the other.
@BornInNorway81 Relax mon ami. There's a large community of fans who enjoy fan translations of classic games. I for one appreciate the reporting that NintendoLife and similar sites give to this corner of gaming.
@NinNin Yeah sure, here's what he said. The link I added scrolls down to the comment but it takes a while so I don't blame you for not seeing it.
I asked: "How will [the Wii U physical release] be sold if not in stores?"
He said: "Badlands hasn't announced their partner yet... I believe when they lock in a date then they will announce with a big fanfare since it's a popular outlet."
As many have noted, this isn't much of a sale. But I picked up Axiom Verge on Wii U (the definitive version, mind you), plus Blaster Master 0 on 3DS. Good nuff
@JamesR I had the same thought. Using this logic there are now 22 million sellers. Star Fox 2, Earthbound, Kirby's Dream Course, and Super Punch-Out have each joined the ranks.
The selection of titles on the SNES Mini is good but there are a few genres that are notably underrepresented. Specifically RPG/Adventure, Shmups, Brawlers, and Puzzlers. With that in mind here's my list:
Obligatory 1- Super Mario All-Stars 2- Actraiser 3- Pilotwings
RPG/Adventure 4- Chrono Trigger 5- Final Fantasy II 6- Lufia 2 7- Illusion of Gaia 8- Terranigma 9- Legend of the Mystical Ninja 10- Ogre Battle
Shmups 11- Axelay 12- Super R-Type or R-Type 3 13- U.N. Squadron 14- Super Smash TV
Brawlers 15- TMNT IV 16- Knights of the Round 17- Final Fight 2
Puzzlers 18- Super Bomberman 1,2,or3 19- Tetris Attack 20- Lost Vikings
This looks great. I preordered it a month or so ago when it was featured on Kotaku. It got me thinking about my own 101 games list for my kids. They've played a lot of classics but now I've got a Gaming 101 syllabus to write.
@Bass_XO Great list. My comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek but I think you got the correct list. I'd personally swap out Kirby 64 for Pokemon Puzzle League but your list is spot on otherwise. And yes, unfortunately we wouldn't get GoldenEye or Perfect Dark although those games are not really playable anymore.
@ThanosREXXX Haha, good point about 12 games for an N64 Classic. Then again, you'd be hard-pressed to find more than 12 N64 games that are still playable.
Bah, this list blows! Posters or a CD, really? Nintendo must be hurting for them to cheap out this badly. I've achieved Elite status every year except one and this year is probably the last time I ever will. I was hoping for a better reward as a send-off.
1. Bionic Commando 2. Duck Tales 3. Contra 4. Mega Man 3 5. Mike Tyson's Punch Out 6. Contra 7. Metal Storm 8. Baseball Stars 9. Super Mario Brothers 10. Super Mario Brothers 3
Honorable mentions: Ninja Gaiden 2 Wizard & Warriors Dr. Mario
9 out of 10 seems overly generous. The criticisms mentioned are all completely valid and imho add up to a taxing and decidedly un-fun Metroid game. Whereas exploration and discovery was exhilarating in MP1 and MP3, opening a new area in MP2 was sheer tedium. I will forever resent this game for forcing me to stand within those silly "safe zone" bubbles, while looking out at the expansive world around me. Could have been soooooo much better.
@bboy2970 Yeah, yeah, I know, I was being facetious. I could have said that one a week isn't NEAR enough to satisfy the gamer's demands but where's the fun in that?!
This isn't directed at you, so don't take this as a rebuttal, but I just don't understand Nintendo's strategy with the incremental releases. What's the downside to making a massive catalog available all at once? There's no technical consideration - these are digital assets that have existed for 10-20 years. Anyone with a search engine can find emulators and ROM dumps of every game that will ever be released on the VC. It's just their business model. But again I don't understand it. Doesn't it stand to reason that having a massive catalog would expand the number of purchases made every day? Every gamer who wants to buy Metroid II must wait until the day it launches and if they still own their 3DS and still use it, they might buy the game. If it were on the VC right now they might buy it...today. I personally would have bought a handful of games already but I've bought nothing and may not reach 5 or 6 in the next year. It all depends on what NOA randomly chooses to release week by week.
I get that they want the VC content to stay "fresh" and having a regular release accomplishes that. But is that really the usage model for the VC? DSiWare I understand, but that's all fresh IP. Again we're talking about 10-20 year old stuff. Nothing is new. It may be new to a new audience but the new recommendation lists (Essentials, Games for the car, etc.) should help guide noobs through an expansive catalog.
Bottom-line for me is that this slow trickle of releases is the equivalent of releasing WiiU and only allowing backwards compatibility on a few Wii games each week until they are all compatible. Lame, I say. Give me everything!
Let's see...wikipedia says there were 691 Game Boy games, 502 Game Boy Color games, and 949 Game Boy Advance titles. At our current pace of one game per week, that means the 3DS VC will be complete on June 27, 2052. Something to look forward to!
Sigh. I have both my SNES cart and the DS card so I'm gonna pass on a digital download. Best SNES game ever though. I'm still just patiently waiting for Soul Blazer and Terranigma...
Meh, nothing interesting here. I was never a fan of NeoGeo and I already have Mega Man Anniversary for GameCube. The only thing I'm waiting for on VC are the remaining Enix games.
How funny, I was just thinking about this game a couple of days ago. 8 out of 10 is pretty generous IMHO for this title, however. I own the cartridge but after playing it all the way through back in the day, I don't think I've played it once since. Not a classic in my mind.
Reviews on other sites haven't been very kind. Apparently remakes like this are too "retro" for their tastes. I'm glad to see NintendoLife give an 8 out of 10. I'm looking forward to playing multi-player when it's released in the US next week.
Oh the drama for awarding a game a perfect score. Either way, I'm all over this game. As soon as I finish the SNES prequel I'll download and enjoy this title.
Blaster Master is definitely one of the best NES games. I'm with Zweck36, if you haven't played it and/or are too young to remember it, give the game a try.
However, I don't think there's much more that we'll see from this GaijinWorks/Sunsoft partnership. Most of Sunsoft's good games were licensed properties, such as Batman, Looney Toons, Fester's Quest, Gremlins, Lemmings, etc.
What else do they have? Journey to Silius is an awesome NES platformer, so that's one. But their other big properties are probably Aero the Acro-Bat (a forgettable 16-bit mascot game), Chameleon Twist (blech! - first generation 3D on the N64). I think they also did Spy Hunter, but that property probably belongs to Midway/THQ now.

Re: Star Fox 2 Set To Be The 19th SNES Title To Sell A Million (Kind Of)
@mjharper Let's see, according to Wikipedia there were 48 million sellers. The only games on the SNES Classic that aren't on the list:
Contra 3 (WUT!?!)
Earthbound
Kirby's Dream Course
Super Castlevania (again WUT!?!)
I was shocked to see that Konami didn't have a single million seller. Not even TMNT 4? Really? Methinks this Wikipedia article is incomplete.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (unless we're getting the Advance version)
Dr. Mario
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Punch Out!!
...and as alternates:
StarTropics 2
NES Open Tournament Golf
Wrecking Crew
Super Mario Bros. 2

Re: What LucasArts games do you want to see on Virtual Console?
Honestly, these are the only games I'd pay money for:
Maniac Mansion (NES) or (WiiWare remake with WiiMote controls ala Zak & Wiki)
Metal Warriors (SNES)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES)
Star Wars (NES)
