Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 Port Technical Rundown Detailed By Ubisoft

evan23

@rvcolem1 Well you missed Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate which were the last of the games before the switch to an RPG format. IMO, all 3 of those are worth playing are better than AC III.

The big RPG games are something else altogether although that doesn't make them bad. That being said, I don't personally prefer them.

I only played through a relatively small amount of Shadows before my PC became not available but I was enjoying it. For me, it was far more enjoyable than the prior 3 big RPG games. Looking forward to getting back to it.

I have never played Mirage so I can't speak to that one.

Re: Feature: 10 Years Ago, Nintendo Launched The Very Best 3DS

evan23

I still have 4 3DS handhelds in my collection today.

A quick look at my shelf shows:

  • 3DS - Flame Red
  • 3DS XL - Red and Black
  • 3DS XL - Zelda, Link Between Worlds
  • New 3DS XL - Majora's Mask

I am pretty sure I have had others in the past.

The original 2DS wedge never made any sense to me and while the New 2DS XL was much better, I already owned a 3DS so I never picked one up.

For me, who liked the larger size, the New 3DS XL was the best variant.

IMO, all the "New" variants were improvements over the previous models.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Define 'Retro'?

evan23

To me, anything from the XBOX/PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube era or before is retro.

I have trouble considering Wii U/PS3/XBOX 360 games as retro.

Ultimately though, I am not sure that it really matters all that much. It is just a word.

There are plenty of games from the NES era that hold up well even today and are still enjoyable to play.

Re: Talking Point: Is Knowing A Game's Ending Really That Bad?

evan23

It absolutely depends on the game. For story driven narrative games, especially those with an element of mystery, knowing the ending can definitely change how your perceive the game.

In many cases I love playing the game without knowing the ending and then love playing it again knowing where it is going.

However, it would be less enjoyable if I knew the ending before starting.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

evan23

The Switch 2 needs to backwards compatible more than traditional consoles because it is mobile.

Sure, I can keep my Switch and use it to play games but I don't want to have to carry both consoles around with me because I am not sure which game I want to play.

Making the Switch 2 BC means it launches with a huge library of games available to it on day 1.

I really think as buyers we need to demand BC back at least one generation. Especially as we move more and more to an all digital ecosystem.

Re: Talking Point: How Does Switch's Year 7 Compare To Previous Nintendo Consoles?

evan23

The life cycles of Nintendo's more recent handhelds is impressive. The DS, 3DS and the Switch have all had healthy lifetimes.

That being said, I think we will not see much new quality content on the switch past 2024. That being said, a solid 8 years of good content for a platform with far weaker hardware than it's contemporaries feels pretty worthy of respect.

Re: Soapbox: For This First-Timer, Summer Game Fest Felt Like A Perfect E3 Antidote

evan23

Obviously it was different for those who attended in person. Sounds like like some pretty cool stuff went on.

That being said, as someone who only watched the stream, I was pretty underwhelmed. It was a bunch of hype trailers sandwiched between other substance-free content.

I thought the XBOX and Ubisoft presentations really were impressive this year. If I was to rate the ones I have seen in the last few weeks, for me it would be something like: xbox/ubisoft>sony>sgf>capcom

While the Sony one wasn't very good as a whole, it did have a great Spiderman 2 preview. Capcom was just awful.

Re: The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom amiibo Is Now Available, Did You Get It?

evan23

@sabreman64 In BOTW and TOTK zelda amiibo's give you chests with weapons and other items as well as consumables. Additionally, they can be used once per day to get their bonuses.

It definitely makes a difference, especially in the early game. Of course, if you don't care about collecting, you can buy a full set of RFID cards for the price of one amiibo.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should You Play First?

evan23

As a lifelong Zelda fan, if was to choose 3 games to represent the modern Zelda experience it would be:

  • Ocarina of time
  • Wind Waker
  • BOTW

All are very different games but they each a represent a critical piece of the modern puzzle.

I would probably play those three if you don't just want to start with Ocarina of Time and play then in order from there.

It would for sure be a shame to skip Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess.

That being said, if I wanted to introduce someone to the series ahead of the upcoming game, it seems like BOTW would be the best single game for that.
