Re: Review: Ben 10: Omniverse (Wii U)

That's what this is? I assumed from the title it was some kind of low-budget minigame collection! Oh well...

EDIT: "In case you aren't familiar with the Cartoon Network show, " Ah, OK, no, I wasn't.

Re: Rumour: Wii Mini on the Way to Europe

Hardly surprising that it's on it's way. It's not like any major hardware companies make products just for Canada. That said, they did the various "colour" bundles last year and new Wiis sell for as little as £50 (the most expensive, blue, bundle with Mario Kart will set you back £99) and secondhand for £10-£30 (I looked at flogging mine when I bought a Wii U and quickly realised it just wasn't worth it). The surprising thing then, is that they made this at all. Where's the market for it?

Re: Talking Point: Gamer Protests Can Earn Small Wins From Publishers

Coincidence? Time will tell.

The power of gaming websites and new platforms like MiiVerse do enable people to express displeasure as never before towards video game companies and it would be strange if they weren't aware of that. It's a little too early to call a sea-change though.

A nice article, all the same.

Re: Review: Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 (Wii U eShop)

A 3/10 is pretty damning and enough to put me off the game. That said, the only reasons I can see given for the score are a dodgy camera (which surely can't be as bad as that in the much higher rated Darksiders 2) and the fact that it's similar to the previous game. Leaving aside the fact that many Wii U owners will not have played the previous title, a game should be judged on its own merits not on its developments over previous titles. If that were the case then Mario Galaxy 2 should have scored 2/10.

Re: Talking Point: This Fan's Tragic Tale Highlights The Problem With Nintendo's Approach To Download Purchases

"Once a system has been sold or traded in, and the system is no longer in possession of the original owner, the downloadable content cannot be recovered."

No, but if it has been sold or traded in then anyone else who buys it has access to that content if it hasn't been deleted. Do Nintendo really not see that potentially this approach costs them as many sales as it saves?

Re: Activision's Bobby Kotick Is Disappointed With The Launch Of The Wii U

"We're concerned about the install base for 6-11 year-olds."

Yep, Because that's the exact demographic Nintendo was targeting at this launch. How could a system flouting Zombi U and NG3: Razor's Edge as exclusive launch titles, added content versions of Tekken, Arkham and AC3, together with day one COD possibly fail to attract 6-11 year olds?

Of all the bad news stories, I think we can most safely ignore this one.

Re: Bayonetta 2 And The Wonderful 101 To Stay Wii U Exclusive

@Moshugan
First Party:

  • Retro Studios
  • Monolith Soft
  • Rare (now)

Second party:

  • Platinum
  • Rare before Microsoft purchased Nintendo's stake

If a hardware manufacturer owns a game developer they are first party. If a non-hardware manufacturing games publisher owns a game developer they are third party. If a game developer is independently owned but have their games published by someone else they are a second party developer. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Bayonetta 2 And The Wonderful 101 To Stay Wii U Exclusive

@MrSRArter
Mass Effect is a Bioware IP. That made it exclusive to Microsoft while they owned Bioware but EA bought the IP with the developer, thus allowing them to release it on different platforms. This is a completely different situation with Platinum working as a second-party developer.

To sum up:

  • Bioware were a first-party studio that became third-party and took some of their IP with them. (For a Nintendo example see Rare and Banjo Kazooie).
  • Platinum are an independent studio that has their projects funded by external publishers, in this case Nintendo. Second-party developers can make deals to see their IPs end up with various publishers (as evidenced with Bayonetta) but the publisher who funded the work will have ultimate control over where a specific game is published. In other words, Nintendo own Bayonetta 2 but they do not own the rights to other Bayonetta games.

Re: Rumour: Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge Defecting To The 360 And PS3

I'm enjoying this and I hope others do too. Preferably supporting the Wii U and developing the support for the platform but that's just me being selfish. The developers and publishers deserve to make what they can out of the property. As for publishers, I'll be interested to see how they square this with Nintendo if they want to bring out on the other platforms over here.

Re: Talking Point: Wii U's Graphical Grunt is Laid Bare - Shall We Play Games Now?

cornishlee

First, let me say I have no interest in shooting games, first person or any other kind. Second, I fully agree that graphics do not make the game.

Finally, I am so very, very tired of these negative articles comparing Wii U's power (and now projected future support!) to hypothetical other systems. Give it a year, give it two years, then we can say something about it. For now, why encourage everyone to beat themselves up about something that's both unimportant and unknown?
