Glad to see some people are actually coming to a review to see information about the game and it’s not a wall of complaining about key cards still. It’s still the vast majority, but at least a few people who maybe don’t care about your collection would like to buy and play a game. How dare they?
But seriously this has become such a weird, toxic little community of physical collectors screaming into the smallest Nintendo branded vacuum chamber available to them. If you’re so unhappy with the state of Nintendo or gaming, or physical media, why must you all flood every forum on this site? Go check out something you do enjoy. Reddit has plenty of threads for physical collectors and the reviews people spend time working on won’t have to be propped up as your soapboxes.
I couldn’t agree more. As someone who won’t ever go back to physically collecting retro, I’d much rather be able to still experience those games without having to pay crazy collectors prices. I love emulation and it’s measures is preservation but I don’t support it when it’s current gen.
@The_Nintend_Pedant Good for you guys man, honestly. I love my steam deck and use it all the time. And we may disagree on EULAs and living with them, but George Costanza is someone we can both love. I believe he would likely share your perspective on this very issue if we could actually ask him.
Correct. That’s how the MiG switch works and IT enables the breaking of the EULA with Nintendo, which can now affect innocent buyers. I’m not here spending my time to comment on a platform specific website to defend or damn the company or homebrew at its core, but do find it incorrect when I see so many comments not going after a company whose product created the very issue in the posted article. Maybe this just isn’t the place for technical conversation of that kind or maybe the majority of people here simply don’t care, but pointing a finger at who you WANT to be upset with and not who created the problem is confusing to me. I don’t agree with how litigious Nintendo is. I love emulation and homebrew, but that doesn’t give me the right to break a companies ecosystem because I want to play old games or pirate new ones. They do have every right to protect their investments and specifically their services, which you can disagree with but it won’t change. If anyone upset by their article were to investigate the other consoles and services they would find similar claims. Perhaps less since others have made a larger push to go digital than Nintendo has until now and maybe this audience is being faced with that for the first time. This largely is what our digital lives look like everywhere and frankly, examining what our rights are today should be looked at on a much larger scale than digital leisure.
Sorry for the long post, it’s cool if you disagree but ultimately this is everywhere and is already how things work.
@The_Nintend_Pedant Yes, and again you seem to live extreme examples for a luxury device that doesn’t differ much from what we’ve had for the last 10+ years. Nintendo didn’t make this happen, the creator or the MiG switch and bad actors allowed this to happen. Without that, there wouldn’t even be an article to read here in the first place. You’ve also completely overlooked the fact that the original post was praising Nintendo chat and their ability to resolve this issue very quickly. There is a system in place to prevent this digital distopia you seem to view as reality and that’s ultimately what this post was about. Getting upset of an example that hasn’t happened or been reported could be said about everything so you may as well be upset about that grandma also just buying a switch not knowing about a switch 2 or games or anything. Do you plan on modding your switch 2? Are you an author of an emulator? Did you pick up a switch 2? If the answer to no to at least the first two questions why are you even upset by this? Wouldn’t it make more sense to be upset that a 3rd party made a device that created this issue in the first place?
@The_Nintend_Pedant That’s a pretty exaggerated perspective. Comparing death to a console and EULA policy is pretty extreme and just doesn’t play to me. This ban is because the game key file used on the cartridge has been backed up and resold, Nintendo has nothing to do with that, it’s born from piracy. A duplicated key will result in that key for that exact game being banned, which will also include the copy running on the MiG switch for the original user(s). This can also happen on any console since the ps3/360 days, but the difference is that typically (but not always) the account would be banned instead of the console. Nintendo is really the only one of the console manufacturers still dealing with piracy in such a meaningful way so it’s not shocking that they stepped it up to the console. Again, to me there’s no real reason to be mad about Nintendo protecting the economy of their consoles when people playing pirated games are at fault for all of your examples. Now, if Nintendo sold used games somehow and then you got a console ban, that’s different but is not the case here. Long story short, people can’t help but ruin things for others in order to save money.
@The_Nintend_Pedant It’s crazy how much of the audience here just doesn’t understand how any of this works and make a crazy leap of blaming Nintendo for user actions. It really does seem like most commenters didn’t even begin to reach the article they are commenting on.
Any time I’ve replaced a battery with a 3rd party one, it’s been a significantly worse experience. Controllers take wear and tear, nothing lasts forever and businesses will always make decisions to better the business. I don’t personally need a repairability score for devices I purchase and all controllers are “expensive” these days.
Naw the used market isn't Nintendo's responsibility at all since they don't sell refurb switch 2's. People will ruin anything and this is no different. Just wait for a PC emulator if you just have to play these games without paying for them or if you are just into homebrew you should never expect every device to play nice in that environment. Also, there's never been more handhelds and handheld PC's out there for this exact thing. It's not a very warranted case to buy a switch 2 to mod it and play super Mario world on it like the other 30 devices you likely already have.....the switch also just has Mario world on it already.
@axelhander It does amazing things for cancer research but all anyone in the gaming space hears its "IT TOOK THEIR JOOOOBS" and is exclusively used to steal art. It's a much bigger picture than that and I would argue its just another example of none of us really know what goes into making a game and shouldn't assume we know better in all circumstances. If you want to be upset about it that's cool, but maybe own up to the fact that all of your knowledge about it is likely from headlines.
@JohnnyMind Couldn't agree more. Also does anyone remember what the background looked like in any of the previous Hot Shots/Everybody's golf? They've never been pretty and pretty much look the same. If you want to rage at the mere mention of AI in any capacity I would urge you to look up SpeedTree. It's been used for maybe decades and it works in a similar fashion. I care that the game plays and runs well, not that someone made one texture and then had AI apply it to several assets. I'm sure its a lifesaver for a small team and enables them to focus on something that matters more to the game other than "that tree or grass texture".
@JohnnyMind This is likely to prevent further testing for modding purposes as the console is already in the hands of someone attempting to break their licensing agreement. If you limit the functionality of the console it would likely slow the inevitable modding solution down a bit.
Well it looks like these comment sections are ever so slowly moving toward the focus of the actual game instead of how it’s distributed. Guys, we all know it’s a key cart. It’s not magically changing anytime soon, just move on. You’ll either play the game or you won’t but do we really need the exact same comment section for every review?
Mine has a few hairline scratches that are vertical across the screen, so I heavily assume it's my dock. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I feel screen protectors do affect the visibility of the screen, even if it's ever so slight. I also really despise cases that clip on and turn something thin and sophisticated into a military grade nerf football, So I just have the Tomtoc case for travel.
Im sorry to say that just isn’t this hobby. It’s iterative and all other consoles/pc have been well on this path for years. Sorry this reality is just now coming to Nintendo, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is the reality of the industry and file sizes will always increase as storage does as well. I personally think you could be very happy with a steam deck. Cheapish storage, great game selection with constant discounts, but you would have zero physical media. Physical is dying either way.
Couldn’t agree more. I feel people are forgetting that a lot of these same comparisons of staleness were what we had at launch with the series x and ps5 as well since the OS didn’t change. This is adding new features, a solid high quality build and it’s a huge step up in terms of performance and optimization. If not this, than what do people expect for a generational leap? It’s unlikely we’ll get another ps2 to ps3 graphical improvement and honestly, that’s about the most boring upgrade we could ask for anyway. Games look great, it’s time they run great too.
Storage prices drop with time and frankly, who cares how big a game is these days? This has been the reality of gaming for almost 10 years now so it’s not exactly new. You want things to be cheaper, look better and be smaller all at the same time? It just seems a lot of people don’t want to be happy with the switch 2 form some wild reasons.
@Ryu_Niiyama For sure, I agree completely. The developers of these games are also paying the same increases that we do for everything else AND they tend to get fired all of the time. But I’d gladly pay an additional $10 for borderlands if they just don’t go with the god awful memefest writing.
I think this is actually a decent step forward since currently these games are just a download code inside of an empty case. I would also think most of us know what we are actually buying when we purchase a game for any console. This opens an avenue for kids to sell back digital only games when they weren't able to before. Whether we like it or not, we all need to prepare for a completely digital future. Maybe only special editions will be physically produced in the future and sold through specific retailers or something, but I just don't get all this fervor over having everything physically and not ever expecting it to be patched or iterated on in the future. Steam has clearly shown the successful path for this type of future and if the digital marketplace is down in the future, hacking or modding that console is likely easy to do and could be expected at that point.
