I think for me it kind of depends on who is making it. I don't really mind taking clear inspiration from games, and sometimes don't even mind "clones" especially when by Indie studios.
But this is not a small indie we're talking about here... This is one of Sony's big games. The game might be fun, but it does drop my opinion on Sony because they chose the easy route and just copy homework from someone else...
Switch 2 is super uncreative and boring, but now that we heard rumors the next system won't have gimmicks (and they were moving away from that lately anyway) a simple, straightforward name like Switch2 wouldn't surprise me either.
Yeahhh... Would have instantly bought this if it was available anywhere else; Switch, Steam, Xbox or PS, whatever. But I'm totally not into Apple, so won't be playing this I guess.
Guess I really don't get this one... One of my big gripes with TotK (and BotW as well) are the dumbed-down bosses. Especially in TotK, you are basically permanently in godmode with all the items and skills. You can pause and heal at any time, and can carry unlimited fairies and potions.
Zelda enemies, both boss and common, always have been kind of like little puzzles; you only were able to beat them easily by figuring out their gimmick. This idea also almost completely disappeared from TotK and BotW.
Definitetly DX for me, and not the remake. I didn't really like the remake. The artstyle was weird, performance wasn't great, and overall in terms of artstyle and soundtrack I don't think they captured the unique feel and style the original Gameboy versions had.
The only way I can see this work is if they use the map as a base, in terms of geography and general shape... and then fill it out completely. BIG cities, castles, caves, you name it, leaving almost no patch of ground like it has been in the previous titles. How would civilization expand?
I always think Hyrule in BotW and Totk is a bit... small for a kingdom? I mean, if you look at the size of the settlements and the castle, it wouldn't make sense for much more than say 300 people/creatures to live in the kingdom?
Let us skip ahead a few hundred or maybe even thousands of years after rebuilding Hyrule, and show us a huge, thriving kingdom. A game like Genshin for example already has towns which feel bigger.
A Majora's Mask time system could work as well I think, but only combined with a fully built-out map.
Instead of Metroid dread, an actual big home-console Metroid game.
Ubisoft and Starfox? Come on. Nobody asked for Ubisoft. Fans want a proper new Starfox game (better than the WiiU one).
MarioKart 8 DLC? MarioKart 9 has been long due. Instead we got a mobile game, and mobile-designed tracks for 8.
Virtual Console? Stocks dropped like a brick when the subscription system got announced. Compare that to WiiU and 3DS area, where you could buy 1 game and then own 1 game forever, and you should come to the conclusion that was way more customer friendly than a service where you lose your content if you stop paying.
Listen man, again, I'm a Nintendo fan at heart. But ESPECIALLY we Nintendo guys have to keep our minds open. Not everything what Nintendo poops out is gold.
If those things seem like high-effort things to you, and the best Nintendo could have done... Nintendo owns your soul.
I'm going to regret posting this on a Nintendo website lol...
Listen, I really don't care for whatever Sony has been doing lately personally. My PS4 is collecting dust, and I didn't even bother getting a PS5. My Switch on the other hand, is getting some love, especially since TotK just came out.
...But Sony is right here. Nintendo has been steadily going downward since releasing the Switch. Not only did their stocks underperform by quite a lot considering they did the theme park, the Mario movie and some other things, Nintendo also didn't do a lot of other things they could have done.
I'm talking a decent online experience, virtual console, rebooting games like F-Zero, Starfox, Mother, Metroid, a new Mariokart etc. They have been playing it extremely safe, and are dripfeeding us. In the meantime big hitters like Pokemon are also on the decline in terms of quality. In general they aren't too nice to their fans. Add to that they seemingly (and understandably really) don't have a solid idea on what to do next, after the Switch...
This doesn't mean there isn't anything fun to do for the Nintendo lover (like I am), but other companies certainly are catching up. I'm especially looking at Valve lately, and honestly it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Nintendo isn't that relevant anymore in 2-5 years.
@DanElectrode Fair point, but in my opinion it's exactly the opposite haha. Because BOTW is so extremely big and open, I personally feel a more compact and handcrafted Hyrule field has been more memorable to me.
I have been extremely hyped for these games since the Switch launched... However, I guess my hype kind of has died.
I have a Steam Deck now, and I'm enjoying that way more than I ever enjoyed the Switch. Also not sure if I want to spend 120,- on two Zelda games I already own multiple times.
@yuwarite While I would be sceptical on this a while ago, i've had my Deck for a few months now, and I honestly don't think I will buy a Switch 2. I haven't touched my Switch either.
You know, I think Nintendo is running out of "gimmicks". We aren't really surprised anymore by stuff like motion or touch controls. 3D is pretty much dead. We've had toy/figure/game combinations. Portability and shareability already have been done with Switch, and honestly with the Steam Deck and the likes gaining in popularity, there won't be much more to gain there either.
So yeah, I'm honestly having a hard time imagining what's next. I don't think they will make it with JUST their big games (of which a lot, personally, are starting to get way less interesting lately).
Always have been saying it will get delayed until 2023. Still think they are going to fill the gap with TP and WW HD, and also still think the reason they didn't release those with the Anniversary is because they saw this delay coming.
It certainly matters to me, but not in the sense most people usually think about: Not all games need to have hyper-realistic, high-def graphics to be fun.
There are also more than enough old games with extremely dated graphics that are still tons of fun. We still love the N64 too, right?
However...
Graphics are part of the presentation. For me it's comparable to a website of a big company; it should look professional and solid to radiate quality and trust. If the Samsung website was Comic Sans with yellow backgrounds you'd really question their products. They might get away with that in the 90's , but not anymore nowadays.
It's the same with this game. The Switch is more than powerful enough to make a game look way better. GF/Nintendo/PokemonCompany have more than enough budget and resources. There is no excuse for it to look like a cheap assetflip.
They could have spent way more time on developing a minimalistic, simple art direction that actually looks nice even though the graphics are still generally simple. Should have went for a way more "painteresque" style for this game with a focus on color; that way the blurryness can be used to its advantage.
@nessisonett I think that's exactly the point... It wouldn't be very fitting or stimulating to include a manly cargo pants, now would it? You just need to use your imagination a bit
Uh.. okay. I mean, I'm a huge Miku weeb, but this just seems like a generic puzzle game with no conneciton to Vocaloid or music whatsoever, with some Miku art slapped onto it...
@Maplemiles I would like to agree with you, because I love Nintendo, and I know they put a ton of polish and content in most of their games... So in that sense, yes they are always worth the money. However, if you view it from a "mainstream" gamer perspective, someone that just wants any console to play some games on, and you start comparing it to stuff like GamePass or Steam, it becomes a different story. I guarantee you'll get at least 4x the value if you shop elswhere, while still getting very high quality games (They exist, outside of the big N!).
This still doesn't mean Nintendo games aren't worth it, just that I can see a future where people choose a system or service with more value over the Nintendo brand.
This is all really interesting. I see a lot of people here talking about Microsoft not being a threat to Nintendo, but I wonder;
While I agree that Nintendo has some of the absolute best first-party titles and is way more innovative than MS or Sony, when is this going to turn into a value for money thing?
I mean, I love Nintendo, but their games are pretty damn expensive, and always stay pricey over time. What if all these new series MS just aquired will be thrown onto GamePass? What if they can just give so much value, so much games, that the mainstream audience (non-diehard Nintendo fans) will automatically choose Xbox over Nintendo because of the sheer amount of value?
And this is starting to seem possible for the PC audience as well with Gamepass for PC.
@NintendoWife How do you mean? Keep in mind TP HD and WW HD already exist for the WiiU, and even for the Nvidia Shield in China. It's not like they will wait for another generation to release those "ports of remakes" again, I think.
This probably is going to be the first Pokemon game I'm going to skip in 25 years haha. I love they are trying something new, but the quality of this game, both in terms of graphics and fun factor, seems to be just so extremely low...
I mean, it may be a commendable mindset to give younger peeps the opportunity to gain experience, but like they said themselves, I can't help but feel this studio is lagging behind in almost every aspect.
Even Legends still looks pretty rough. Could you imagine if GameFreak would have the level of experience and tech of, let's say, Platinum games?
Hmm, I guess 4/10 for me. The only games that were remotely interesting to me were New Snap and Skyward Sword, which I both did purchase. I was kind of waiting for the other HD Zelda games to come over, but I guess they will keep those to fill the gap when Botw2 gets delayed. The way NES/SNES/N64 works with Online also kind of left me just not wanting to buy a subscription at all.
But yeah, there's wayyy too many interesting games I still want to play on Steam as well to just sit there and wait for Switch games.
Maybe I'm growing out of Nintendo a bit. The biggest series I cared for like Zelda and Pokemon all go into a direction I don't really like, and Steam is way better (and cheaper) than Switch for indies too, especially with the Deck coming up.
I think this makes Master Chief likely. It's a widely known character and it would be a cool announcement to see for many people... And like Sakurai said, you might not know him, which is probably true for a lot of Japanese people.
That, plus Nintendo seems to be really good friends with MIcrosoft lately... The latest thing is Banjo-Kazooie in the new Nintendo Online tier. Wouldn't surprise me if Chief was part of the deal.
@moodycat Happy to see there are more people that agree on that. Almost all the items on this list were missing from Botw. I understand they wanted to break away from the conventions, but... it's just not a very fun game as it is now. Still hoping for a Zelda collection!
For me, in any case WiiU and Switch get eliminated.
Switch basically didn't have any personality or that Nintendo quirkyness all previous systems had, and I think the click sound also isn't that creative (though certainly recognizable). It's wayy too similar to other generic clicking sounds, I often hear similar things in EDM tracks, especially with that hard reverb on it.
I never owned a WiiU, but it sounds basically like a Wii... Which I guess was the point with WiiU, but it's not that neat.
Even though I never owned a SNES either (N64/GBC kid), I like it, it probably is the most elaborate of the bunch, but it feels more like a generic game track rather than a system theme.
3DS is okay, but it also is just a pretty generic synth/lounge-ish chord without anything particularly noticeable.
For me that leaves GB, GBA, GC, Wii. I got GC long after it launched, but I actually grew up with GBC, GBA and Wii, so these three are most ingrained into my memory. Each of those have personality, and GB is just so super iconic...
I have to go with GBC. Even though it's extremely simple, and maybe a big part of it just is its iconic nature, I think it's really interesting how just 2 chiptune bleeps are recognizable by pretty much anyone age 25 and above. It's simple, short and effective.
@VoidofLight To be completely fair though; GameFreak also already has a ton of Pokemon models / animations ready, and it wouldn't surprise me if the trees they used actually are external assets as well. Obviously the actual game will have much more content, a much more detailed and varied map, much more to do, more polish, and will need way more work and time than this quick copy... But yeah, seeing they made this in 3 weeks, I think it's pretty fair to call GF lazy for what they have shown up until now. With this much time GF should have been able to make something that looks solid and polished, not something that actually kind of has similarities to this rip.
The N64 versions are still the only ones for me. Can't really say I agree with #1 personally either. It just doesn't feel the same... Kind of the same problem I had with Links Awakening HD: Yeah sure, everything is made with more realistic sounding instruments now... but I don't think that necessarily makes it better.
I love that the creators probably didn't even know what Hentai is, and just threw that buzzword into the mixer, adding some bad Anime models, hoping weebs would buy it xD
I'm fine with Nintendo allowing it though. (At least as far as the lewdness goes, this basically is super ***** shovelware, which I like a lot less) As long if there's a good parental controls option / age verification system in place, lewd stuff should be able to be sold. It doesn't hurt anyone, and you can choose to see the listings or not.

(At least as far as the lewdness goes, this basically is super ***** shovelware, which I like a lot less) As long if there's a good parental controls option / age verification system in place, lewd stuff should be able to be sold. It doesn't hurt anyone, and you can choose to see the listings or not.
