While it's not an official expansion to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the free-to-download fan-made Second Wind mod has been on our radar for a while now.
As we've reported previously, Second Wind is focused on expanding the core game with new items, characters and locations, as well as introducing new story elements.
The mod has just received its biggest update yet (v1.9.10), which introduces an entirely new town called Ordon as well as a cast of unique NPCs, a shop, a blacksmith, new quests and a brand-new main storyline.

As with any fan-made mod, this isn't officially sanctioned by Nintendo, but it's incredible to see how polished it is. You can check it out in the video at the top of this page.

I love this. One of my favorite things about Breath of The Wild was learning more about life outside of Hyrule Town. Sure the enticement of imagining the game as a bustling Hyrule is there, it did give strength to the outside places we know and love in Zelda. The game showed me that the citizens of Hyrule are Hyrule, not just the place. So long as there is just one soul fighting for it, Hyrule will always be.
I only wanted more of that outside of the main area kind of vibe. I always wondered if Hyrule had any island colonies, or even better, what its neighbors were like. We don't see them that often.
really hope they do the same on switch so there are more stuff dlc
Ooh I'll get this update downloaded now, I've just started replaying this on CEMU so it'll be nice to have all of this integrated
Just to make sure: This is an emulator thing only, right?
@lokozar 'fraid so.
Isn't this showcasing piracy according to Nintendo and other companies?
@UglyCasanova @Savino Emulation is not piracy. You can easily rip games you own. Please don't assume everyone is morally bankrupt. It's that type garbage thinking that allows Nintendo to put C&Ds on amazing projects like this. LOTS of people use emulators to play games they own.
And playing games before you buy IS piracy. Pirate.
@Savino @UglyCasanova Playing an emulated game that you already own is not piracy.
I love Zelda, How do I download this version of BOTW? What emulator do I need? I have apparently been living under a rock and don't know how to play this... I have literally never played on an emulator. Any help would be great.😊😊
@lokozar No, you can play it on console
EDIT: My bad, didn't realize this worked differently.
@lokozar
Yep,
They delete comments about emulators etc, but hey, they love to post it themselve.
Played it myself on 8K mod raytracing. Amazing!
@zxylady
CEMU for WiiU
Yuzu for switch
@zxylady
You would have to purchase the Wii U version of this (I would assume digital) and use CEMU emulator on your computer (the website will show you the minimum requirements for your PC) to play this. I don't know if the website comes with instructions, but it's pretty much the "most legal" way you can play this mod. I would avoid using the Switch version and Switch emulator because it's not been perfected yet, AND Breath of the Wild is a Wii U game.
By default, you'd be playing by mouse & keyboard, but there are easy ways to connect Nintendo controllers, namely the Wii U and Switch Pro Controllers.
Why is everyone saying you can't do this on switch? Can you not use layeredFS?
@Nerdtendo64 Switch port is planned at a later date!
@Waikuteru
Oh cool! I didn't know the file structures were different between versions. You learn something new everyday
@Savino an article from 1999 is the only thing you could find isn’t it? 😂
@Savino
MOST emulators don't require bios files. They're reverse engineered to not need them.
Not to mention you can dump your own bios in practically all situations
@savino
Source?
@Nerdtendo64 https://www.tomshardware.com/news/why-most-roms-are-illegal,37512.html
I wish I knew how to utilize these things.
Would be nice to get this on my actual Switch, if ever possible.
Nintendo needs to support stuff like this. It flourishes on Steam.
@Rinyuu
Lol read the article you sent me. It says that it is legal to backup your own games as long as it's not for commerical use. It doesn't mention anything at all about reverse engineering a bios.
@Soduh
Jailbreaking your switch is super easy (granted you have an earlier model). This mod has a planned switch release but I don't think they've started working on it.
@Savino Sure, here's thousands of results

@Nerdtendo64 I've got a Switch Lite
Does jailbreaking void anything warranty related etc. like it does with iPhones? I've always been sort of wary of jailbreaking devices.
Also would the planned switch release be official or still require a jailbreak? Sorry, I'm not very tech savvy lol. Thanks for the reply though!
@Soduh
Lites are technically hackable but you need to be able to solder + find a modchip that's usually like $150.
It voids the year warranty from Nintendo, but if that's already expired then you can't void it further
The planned switch release would still require jailbreak unless Nintendo magically decides to allow mod support on their platform (i.e. you will always need a jailbreak)
@Savino just google if emulators are legal. All things I can find say they are legal. What is illegal is sharing ROMs and BIOS online.
We need those DLC.....
Creating an emulator with a reverse engineered BIOS is indeed legal. Companies were unable to do anything against this legally, so in the past they simply bought and shut them down. Interesting watch: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UGHul1PrXCE
Looks pretty damn cool! My wii U is modded, might give this a go. Looks like a lot of polish for what is a fan mod.
This reminds me a bit of Project M, a fan made Smash Bros Brawl mod. They did a great job polishing and balancing that game over the years and eventually the devs found work as game devs. So fan projects can produce great things sometimes!
Spoilers on this one, but we had fun playing through at least part of the second wind mod. This shows a few of the bosses. https://youtu.be/l893yDOgBfs
@Savino
Clean room Reverse engineering isn’t illegal. It’s only illegal if copyrighted material is used to perform the task.
This was decided in the Tengen-Nintendo court case of the late 80s. Tengen illegally obtained the 10NES chip code from the patent office. Nintendo sued and won, but as part of the decision the judge ruled that clean room reverse engineering, which was done all the time in the PC world back then, was not illegal. That’s why you had IBM clones. They used reverse engineered BIOs chips. Only using copyrighted and trademarked materials violated the law.
this mod is amazing but is practically unplayable because it is so buggy. ive got about 20 to 30 hours into it on master mode and pretty much stuck in a perma panic moon.
