@Kaze_Memaryu Actually, I would say he has a point... well, half point. Nintendo is well-aware of its loyal fanbase, so they use backwards compability to boost interest for people who like the new console, but not the current line-up.
Hmm? My concern isn't with anything but his 5% statistic, which I know first-hand is false. I'm not thinking about Nintendo or any outside factors at all...I'm reacting to his comment that backwards compatibility is a concern for only 5% of Microsoft customers. He doesn't have a point there at all. It's bunk.
I still believe there are many mediocre retro games that are overrated but if you all want to defend Nintendo Life so much is okay but it is pointless and the comments are to express our opinions!
I think you're somehow failing to realize that reviews are also to express our opinions...
I just can't believe Nintendo hasn't even thought about a platformer between these two.
I'd be surprised if they haven't thought about it. More likely I think they haven't found a way to make the two vastly different styles work together in a way that would please both sets of fans.
Speaking as someone who does a lot of Nintendo LPs (and other videos), I'm all for it. If it's their intellectual property then I feel like they're being more than fair by letting me put together my silly videos in the first place. They never got anything in return for that. If now they decide that what they want in return is a few pennies that don't come out of my pocket OR the viewer's pocket, then I think that's perfectly reasonable.
Some new Wii U features, like the touchscreen-equipped controller feel convoluted, and less innovative compared to technologies like Microsoft's Kinect camera.
Speaking as someone who has used the Kinect, this is absolutely not the gold standard to compare ANYTHING to.
Also, tapping a touch screen is "less innovative," but he brings up the rise of smartphone gaming as another obstacle for Nintendo? Which is it, pal?
Boardgame apps such ss Ticket to Ride and Reiner Knizia games would be win and sexy up the e-shop.
This! Add Carcassonne to the list too. Pretty much any of those niche board games that I can't necessarily play with folks in real life who aren't interested in learning complicated rules for a game they'll never play again.
when it's been said on reviews time and time again, its easy to see who actually feels upset about their existence
I'll spell it out for you, and everyone: nobody on staff is "upset about their existence." Period. We make jokes about things. It happens. There's no ulterior motive or resentment involved.
time to just forget about them and move on.
They're features specific to this most recent release so, as always, we'll discuss them. Sometimes we'll think features are useful, sometimes we'll be ambivalent toward them (as now) and other times we'll think they're a detriment. Whatever they are, we'll say it, because that's how games are reviewed, and that's information reviews should contain.
That said, with my mod hat on, this part of the conversation is over. No harm was intended with a clearly jokey and gentle comment, and that's that.
I thought the phrase "lily-livered" would make that clear. Nobody minds if you use restore points, but if you can't take a little gentle (and that's pretty darn gentle) ribbing about it, then that's a whole other issue.
The problem wasn't unique to Mega Man 1--Mega Man 2 had it as well.
Mega Man 2's movement physics definitely feel tighter to me. To each his own I guess but I notice a marked improvement!
Whenever you review something you usually informing the consumer if it's worth the purchase, if you just compare it to other old games, how does the consumer know if he/she should buy a new game, or an old game?
The game was evaluated on its own merits. I'm not sure where the confusion is, as I don't compare it to any other games, new or old. Apart from its own immediate sequels, which I think is a fair thing to compare it to!
@MetallicDonkey This is the one that interested me the most, and I'm glad to see it will be available so soon. Looks like it could really immerse the player into the game if the 3D is done well.
I thought this was far worse than other "deliberately brutal" games like Super Meat Boy. Yeah, it was tough...but it didn't feel particularly inspired or satisfying. Meh.
I like the app and played a few challenges, but then realized these are probably just repurposed stages from the full game...which made me stop playing it. I don't want to get too good at these stages and then breeze through them when the final game comes out. (Also I'm terrible at them. Thomas, if your scores are anything to go by, you're a master.)
Pharo, Drill & Dusts were quite the stinkers as well
Aww, I love Pharaoh Man's stage! Starting outside...infiltrating the underground tomb...working your way through classic Hollywood-Egyptian traps to find the main baddie...I loved it. It has a nice early horror vibe, which is something the series never really explored again apart from Shade Man.
Is this on a US console? Some of my friends were complaining the slowdown on this makes it seem almost unplayable compared to the 3D Classics version.
It was indeed on a US console. The slowdown is due to its origins as an NES game, where that was very common. The 3D Classics version was reoptimized for new hardware, which is why that plays a bit more smoothly. I definitely wouldn't call this one unplayable. If it were I don't think I would have been able to 100% it!
I think Frank would love to marry Ellie, and maybe do something really fun like be a Space Astronaut Police Chief on another, as of yet, undiscovered planet, where everyone thinks he's really clever and funny.
i hate when people dock points off a game just because it doesn't add anything new as a sequel.
Just FYI, since I've seen quite a few comments phrased this way: games don't get points "docked" or "lost" in order for us to arrive at a score. That would imply that every game starts off with a perfect 10 rating in our eyes, and then we go through and see how many points we can knock it down.
It doesn't take much thought to realize that that's clearly not how it works.
If anything, a game "earns" each point, up from the bottom. It's not the other way around. That'd be silly.
If you haven't played either of the Dillon's games, and want to get one of the two, which one should you get?
It's a dead heat, if you ask me. If the idea of managing a companion and defending a train in addition to a village appeals to you, this is the one to go with. If either of those things sounds too complicated, then you can go with the slightly simpler formula of the first game.
Personally? I'd just wait for a sale on one of them, and make your decision that way.
Wily Wars is a bit ropey, but worth it for the Wily Tower sequence...where you can take any combination of items and utilities from the first three games! Talk about awesome.

Re: Microsoft: If You're Backwards Compatible, You're Really Backwards
I read this as "50%," and I thought, huh, that sounds a bit low, but maybe.
Then I noticed it was 5%.
And the comment could only have been made in a fit of madness. With all due respect, Mr. Mattrick, that's a lie.
Re: Review: Mega Man 5 (3DS eShop / NES)
Haha! I wanted to take a step back...some folks were concerned that I was reviewing all the MM games!
But yeah, as much as I like this one (and I do like it a lot) I effing HATE this version of the Rush Coil. Yuck.
Re: Review: Mega Man 5 (3DS eShop / NES)
The only game that lets you re-fight defeated bosses in their actual stages is MM1. In all of the others you have to wait for the capsule room.

It's not unplayable. Just unenjoyable.
Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. 2 (Wii U eShop / NES)
Toad is my favorite character. I use him for every level, except for world 4, where I use Luigi.
I don't think I've ever seen someone else agree that Toad is the best! We might be soul mates.

This is one of the easiest Mega Man games, I've become really good at it. Mega Man 4 is unforgiving to me.
Interesting...I'd say 4 is the easiest in the classic series by a landslide!
