The Wii U Virtual Console launched a couple of weeks back with SNES classic Super Mario World being available from the off, and it seems we won't have to wait much longer for another dose of Mario as Super Mario Bros. 2 is on its way to the North American eShop.
Released back in 1988 on the NES, Super Mario Bros. 2 plays a little bit differently to its predecessor and is largely seen as the black sheep of Mario games. Of course, that's not a bad thing at all and many people adore the style of gameplay found in this one.
Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released on the eShop for North Americans to enjoy on 16th May, there's no news yet on a European adaptation. As it's a NES game it'll set you back $4.99 or $1 should you have already purchased it from the Wii Virtual Console.
A trailer for the Wii U Virtual Console version is below, courtesy of GamingVlogNetwork - we have to say, it looks amazing on the GamePad.
Will you be adding this one to your download collection, North America? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Late, as usual. This was already shown on the Wii U eShop under Coming Soon.
Why isn't Nintendo releasing the games in order? Oops, of course its Nintendo....why do something logical!
Fabulously dull. The worst entry in the series by far.
Hell no, SMB 2 is awesome.
If they release it for 3DS' eshop I will buy it since it is the only Super Mario Bros. I don't have. Well I don't own NSMBU either because I don't have a WiiU, yet.
Hope we get it in Europe too. We'll find out tomorrow.
I'll get it even though I have Super Mario All-Stars on SNES and Wii, Super Mario Advance, and the Wii VC version hehe.
Wish they'd just release Super Mario All-Stars on Wii U VC.
@ThumperUK Agreed. It is not even the inverse order: SMW, SMB3, SMB2, SMB... I think it's time for Nintendo to release the same classics both on 3DS and Wii U eShop and not charging us twice for them. They still have a long way to go regarding retro games selling and keep on disappointing long time users.
@Gavin_Rozee They should release Super Mario All Stars as well, perhaps after releasing the NES versions. The SMAS Wii version was crap at least in Europe with 50Hz output and lots of issues when playing on some modern televisions.
More junk. Could at the very least make it interchangeable between 3DS and Wii U, but nooooo. And they don't want to share the all stars versions with us either, big surprise. Nintendo, you can take your virtual console and shove it.
@LunaticPandora
probably won't happen because there is the 25th anniversary Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition which can be played on the Wii U in Wii mode.
Which has been out for 4 years, is out of print, and is rather rare. That's a pretty selfish reason to not offer the All*Stars games, but hey, Nintendo right?
Hmm..never had interest in playing SMB2 USA..I don't like picking up vegetables and throwing them at enemies...but the music is great.
@ikki5 Yeah...but it's kind of expensive if you just want to play the All-Stars versions and don't care for the collector's value.
@Shugo
The hold up may be to sell less than stellar titles easier, with less competition in the shop. Seperate on both consoles of course, ready to do it all again next gen.
This game holds so much nostalgic value for me... maybe more than SM3. But I've played it to death...I won't be buying it next week.
Yay, no one's favorite 2D Mario.
Also, Nintendo should lower the price of these things. 4 dollars for a NES game? $1 is enough, considering it's a NES and first party game...
@Shugo How are the Famicom and NES version superior at all?
More of the same old games. Want NEW OLD games please.
They need to come out with another smb2 game ... Definitely one of my favorites ..
I already have Mario All-Stars on my Wii, but I hope everyone that does plan on downloading it enjoys it.
I have no problem at all myself transferring all my VC games from Wii to Wii U when I finally am able to get a Wii U. As for Super Mario Bros. 2 , for me, updating this retro title for $1 to the Wii U GamePad is in my plans as I have no intention of re-buying it again on the Wii U eShop this time for no $4.99.
@Melkaticox
Actually, this is my favorite Mario from the NES/SNES era, and possibly further. I don't understand why not many people seem to like it. Everybody I know IRL loves this game as well.
When I saw the picture and "North America eShop" I jumped because I was hoping they'd be releasing it on the 3DS eShop, since you know.. it's a NES game, but whatever. Disappointment ensues. -_-
Since I already have the Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition I won't be needing this but this is good for those who don't already own this game. It's one of the more oddball super mario games.
@arrmixer I agree man, if the new Wii U Mario was anything like this one as far as boss models and different characters to play as, that would be awesome. There are a whole bunch of enemies you never see again they could use in a new Mario game from this game.. untapped potential here. Oh well.
I want this on the 3DS VC.
I was hoping to get this on the 3DS soon. The title got me all excited until I read "Wii U".
I get if people want new titles but calling this game junk is pretty harsh. My favorite is still probably SMB3 but this game is still loads of fun.
@Melkaticox It's Miyamoto's favorite Mario game. lol
This game is an oddity as it isn't really a Mario game at all. It was originally Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic in Japan, which NoA had converted to the Mario we know as the real Mario2 was deemed too dificult for the American market. The original Super Mario Bros 2 is now known as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.
Will be buying all three games released on the Wii U, to keep the unanimous going for the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles!
Super Mario Bros 2 is the one mario game i probably won't download. I don't hate it like some people do, i think it's an okay game... But it doesn't live up to the rest of the series' high standards, and i always felt the gameplay was too slow. I may download it if it ever becomes a club nintendo reward, but i'm not paying a full $5 for it. I really wish they'd put Super Mario Bros 3 out on either Wii U or 3DS. It's my personal favorite 2D Mario game.
I will be getting this, because for some reason I am very fond of this entry in the series. I know it's not really a Mario game (Doki Doki Panic?), but I spent a lot of time playing it and remember it being one of the few games that I couldn't seem to be beat no matter how many times I played it. Sadly that means I will be even worse now, since the newer games these days are very easy in comparison (Most).
Still pointless.
Shouldve put part 1 first but this is a good game
@Raiko I agree but I'd prefer this one on the 3ds VC
The most important video game in history, in my opinion.
I still have the Anniversary collection for Wii so I can pass.
I'm getting it. I didn't have it on Wii VC. I even have a $5 promo card to get it for free.
I'll most likely get it since I have some left over eshop money and because I dont have it on the Wii VC
Love this game, even though it's clearly not really a Mario game. Definitly gonna download it.
Where is Super Mario Bros. 3?
How can you call yourself a gamer and call this game junk? SMB2 was hotter than Elmo back during the Christmas of 1988. Can't wait to download and play this on my Wii U Gamepad!!!
Sweet, I love this game! A classic game in my eyes. Keep it coming Nintendo
@MetallicDonkey
Same here!
I was really hoping that this would be a 3DS title seeing as we have:
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels
I feel that the Virtual Console should be Split like this:
3DS:
WiiU:
@ThumperUK Better yet, why not release the games that have never been released for the original Wii (Yoshi's Island, anyone)?
That's not the Mario game I wanted announced! Picross, dangit! PICROSS!
if its not the GBA version than i pass
I love this game, and can't wait to try it again.
You're welcome.
One of my favorite Mario games but I prefer the All-Stars version. The amount of games they're trickling out is just sad. I thought the release schedule might pick up. Guess not.
So, how often are we going to get Wii U VC games that aren't already available? Once every few months? The "2" Nintendo should release is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It would build excitement for their newest VC service to have such a huge title available for the first time on VC! Instead, it's all titles already available, in some cases, on Wii AND 3DS. Oh well (shrugs shoulders).
You want to find the most depressing spot on the Internet? Check here in the Nintendo VC comment section.
SMB2 is awesome, only topped by World!
@Ryno No, that place would be the IGN boards where anything Wii U related marks "the end of Nintendo."
I never got through this game but this seems like a sign , i try to beat it without the secrets or cheats classic game that alot seems to overlook just cause its not the typical mario game.
Though not my favorite, it is a great game none the less. I won't need this version since I already own the 25th annivesary Super Mario All Stars collection.
@Dreamcaster-X
agreed. IGN is a joke nowadays.
But this game was so different that it was a good game on its own. They still can use more enemies here in future Mario titles.
I love this game and it holds a big nostalgia factor for me I spent my whole summer of 1989 with a friend going back and forth each other houses playing this game till we beat it, but I have this game on the Mario AC Wii disc if I really want to play it.
Love this game--lots of nostalgia. Underrated, IMHO.
But fer cryin' out loud, Nintendo... at these prices, and with so.many.re-releases already, frankly you just look greedy... I know you're a business, I know you need to make money to survive, but I question whether this strategy yields y'all the most profit. Recognizing supply/demand rules for pricing would be a good place to start; for example, differential demand would suggest not all NES games should be priced the same...
This is my favorite 2D Mario platformer of all time!
To bad their not offering the GBA or SNES All-Stars versions of this game since its the superior version of super Mario 2.
I don't under stand all of the hate this game gets, SM2 offers 4 playable characters Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad each one of them offering their own unique skill and abilities that you have to master. The game has great level design and also amazing boss battles from Mouser, Clawgrip, Birdo, and King Wart who needs a come back in Mario games.
@sdcazares1980 yes on yoshis island! i would so get that game like now xD
but yeah im pretty sure i will get this game as i never even got a chance to pass it
I'll get it for the $1 price, but I wonder why this isn't on the 3DS eShop already. The same can be said for SMB3. I'm pretty sure that one is already on the eShop in Japan.
I am really looking forward to this release. It is easily one of my favorite Mario games. I don't understand why so many people seem to dislike it. This is where Shy Guys originated!
@ThumperUK
Actually Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic in Japan was suppose to be a Super Mario game to begin with. The prototype of that game had Mario and all the Mario mechanics and enemies already in the game. Shyguys, Bob-ombs, Wart, Mouser and Birdo were all in the prototype until TV Tokyo bought in to the game and wanted Nintendo to use their characters in it instead. So instead of Mario and gang in the game, the game featured TV Tokyo's characters with the Nintendo's enemies. It wasn't until USA wanted a Super Mario game for NA when Nintendo finally turn the prototype into the actual Super Mario Bros. 2 that we know and love. Yes Super Mario Bros. 2 was not altered from Doki Doki Panic, it was completed from the prototype version.
Originally Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan was suppose to be an expansion for the original game but since Super Mario Bros. 2 got turn into Doki Doki Panic over there, they just turn that expansion into Super Mario Bros. 2 instead.
Yes, I will be upgrading this one. Only $1 to play on the gamepad? Yes, please. With 480p resolution, these old games look great, much better than on my big HDTV.
Also to add Super Mario 2 & Super Mario World are shigeru miyamoto favorite classic Mario games, which are my two favorites as well.
How can you not like throwing veggies at ShyGuys
The Japanese even have this available on the 3DS?!
I almost want to wait and see if it comes out for the 3DS VC.
@Gameday Spoiler alert!
SPOILER ALERT: That's not SMB2 here in Europe.
I don't know why people have such an aversion to this game. It was one of my favorites when it released.... It absolutely defficated all over SMB1. But of course SMB3 happened and completely blew past SMB2.
But still the game is such a classic, as it brought in the first time we see mario being able to pick up and throw items.... The only thing I don't like about the Mario series in general is the idea we have to choose to play Mario and only can play luigi by enabling a second player. SMB2 was great because you could choose different characters from mushroom kingdom from the offset.
"Which has been out for 4 years, is out of print, and is rather rare. That's a pretty selfish reason to not offer the All*Stars games, but hey, Nintendo right?"
@LunaticPandora yeah how dare Nintendo wanting to make a profit. Who do they think they are.
You must be pretty damn ignorant. Do the words "OUT OF PRINT" mean nothing to you? They can't profit on it anymore because it hasn't been produced for 3 years. God you're dense.
@MetallicDonkey oh i didnt even think about it like that. ima edit that my bad lol
@Gameday Ha, I was just kidding. I don't think you can spoil a 25 year old game.
And if people are playing Mario games for the story, I feel bad for them. Spoil away!
