Today's new game reveals in the Nintendo Direct broadcasts certainly had a SEGA theme, with Nintendo surprising no-one by confirming Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, continuing the run of mascot Olympians on Nintendo systems. This one was confirmed for Wii U, and while no firm release date was given we can assume it'll be before the Games start on 7th February 2014.
Satoru Iwata provided a detailed rundown of where Sochi is (south Russia), while pointing out the irony that it's one of the warmest places in a largely cold country. In terms of the game, we saw plenty of footage with various events, looking like more of the same but with a HD sheen to the visuals. Wii MotionPlus controls will be prominent in new events such as snowboard slope races, while certain events — such as curling — will make use of the GamePad and its touchscreen.
It'll be more mini-game fun for the family, we imagine, and it will in all likelihood be another solid seller in the franchise. If you're a fan of the previous games and think you'll give it a try, or reckon you'll pass, let us know below.

YESSSSS!!! Its has curling as an event I am going to get this one now.
I've never even played one of the entries in this series. It looks interesting at least.
Would get this just for the Curling!!
yeah never rly was interested in the mario and sonic games but this actually looks like fun or when you bring some buddies
I don't know nothing about no curling, but I'll buy it just for dat dem curling.

@DarkNinja9 More online? That would be fantastic.
When the trailer showed that city - looking like a cross between Delfino island and Sports Resort Island - I was very excited that this could be a fun family sports game. My kids have been playing a ton of "Sports Mix" lately.
Which makes me think they are doing it a disservice w/ that name. Not only did I not know where Sochi is - thanks for making me feel like an idiot Iwata - I didn't know what it was. If they can get a good winter sports mix game w/ both Mario and Sonic wouldn't it be better to take the date out of the title and just call it "Mario vs. Sonic: Winter Olympic Sports" or "Mario vs. Sonic: Winter Sports Island"?
When my mother asks me what to get my kids for Christmas she is not going to want to hear - "Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games".
Because one system can never have too many subpar minigame collections... sigh. I enjoy the genre so don't get me wrong but really... they better be saving bayonetta 2 for closer to e3.
This game is actually pretty cool!
Pairs figure skating & curling??? I'm so preordering this!!!
Needs more curling.
Dear Nintendo,
Please make more use of the balance board for skiing and snowboarding games. It's getting pretty ridiculous that you had the best skiing/snowboarding peripheral of all time and won't bring out a new 1080'.
Not interested myself, but I know those Sonic and Mario Olympics games are big sellers, so it could help sell some systems around the holidays.
@rjejr They already did a title like that one, 4 years ago: https://www.nintendolife.com/games/wii/mario_and_sonic_at_the_olympic_winter_games
They could call it Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games 2, but I don't think that would be a good game.
Honestly, who cares? I want a platformer with Sonic and Mario not a fifth mini-game collection.
@Sekuiya Dang, has it really been four years already? XD
@Steveovig This will be the fourth game, not the fifth.
Anyway, I won't be buying this. When the first game came out, I was really excited about the concept of Mario and Sonic being in a game together, but it just turned out to be a disappointing mini-game collection. I passed on the second and third game, and I'll definitely pass this installment as well as any future ones.
I just can't believe Nintendo hasn't even thought about a platformer between these two. That should've been their first choice for a crossover. If NSMB sold really well then that seems like it would sell equally as nice or close. Who, growing up, wouldn't have loved a crossover game between the two biggest mascots in gaming history?
@Pixelroy
I was going to say the same thing!
I've never been a fan of this series, however...
@Luigifan141
And that is why...
This one is actually looking better, than others. I mean Olympic games....
Sega and Nintendo joining forces definitely stirs things up. The speculation of them [Sega & Nintendo] becoming a single entity is quite intriguing, as long as it's not just Sonic Adventure 3.5 with Luigi...
@Sekuiya - "They could call it Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games 2, but I don't think that would be a good game."
Agreed. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Though I still like "Mario vs. Sonic: Winter Sports Island" but I guess the Olympic craze is what gets people to buy these games.
To whomevers it was - I don't think they'll do a proper Mario and Sonic game for the same reason Jak, Sly and Ratchet wound up together in that really bad Move game. To much time and money and energy and focus goes into those big games and there would be too much fighting to get it out the door.
Would be nice though.
Seems like it might be cool. I am always looking for more multiplayer/party games, so I might have to consider this one when it comes out!!
I just can't believe Nintendo hasn't even thought about a platformer between these two.
I'd be surprised if they haven't thought about it. More likely I think they haven't found a way to make the two vastly different styles work together in a way that would please both sets of fans.
This will be my first Mario & Sonic game!
But the real question is: Will there be online!?
Oh god, another one. They're ok games, I did own the first one, but seriously? I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the last one. MaSatOG 2032 for the Microtendo XWii 1080.
@rjejr You feel like an idiot when you learn something new? That's sad.
first high quality shovelware title: check.
@bonesy91 This is NOT shovelware. This has been a pretty well-received series by SEGA and Nintendo. Im stunned at anyone who would classify this as shovelware. >_<
Yaaaaawn, another Mario and Sonic at the olympics game!!
Cool!
Might be the first M&S I actually buy. Looks great from the footage we saw on ND.
@CaptainSquid Breaking News: Curling Team confirmed for Smash Bros.
Yeah I'm getting it, I didn't touch the others for Wii because they looked really ugly, but this actually looks gorgeous, it's nice to see Sega's take on HD Mario characters.
What's up with the hate of this and saying how mini-games compilations are a lot on the system? We only have three out of dozens of games... Nintendo Land, Game & Wario and this...
Good to see I'm not the only one hyped up over curling!
I'm hyped! MotionPlus finally! These games have gone from near crap to being pretty fun. London was awesome.
Vancouver 2010 actually had a pretty solid hockey game. Sochi 2014 could expand on that by adding some control and game-play elements from Mario Sports Mix.
Wah-hooo! That's it, it'll be my first M&S game - just can't resist cause we're pretty hyped about the olympics here in Russia now ^____^
