Wait they left out megaman X8 in the last article, or did Phil hate it too much to mention it or something. But in anycase why isn't it mentioned
With the exception of ZX (which had only two games) we didn't make an effort to discuss every game in each series. The article was long enough as it was, so we went with a basic overview. As a result, some great stuff had to be glossed over.
(Though perhaps we'll talk about every game in more depth come the Mega Man X 25th anniversary... )
ZX Advent is one of the worst Mega Man games. Full of terrible level design, horrible transformations, and a boring story, there is nothing redeemable about it. ZX is just average.
Oh man. I LOVED ZX. I'd say Advent was average...but not in a bad way.
ZX though...I like that almost as much as I like the Zero series.
I noticed that the Zero collection on DS doesn't have a review on NL. Was it any good?
If you ask me I say yes, undoubtedly. Pick it up if you see it...it's fantastic. Great ports, and wonderful to have the whole series on one cartridge. There's also an easy mode...but don't do that.
Fun fact: I played these games to death as a kid...but only because I rented the heck out of them and played with friends. Until I was an adult, I only actually owned one Mega Man game.
I'll always have a soft spot for Mega Man 5. It's the only game in the series I've beaten entirely without taking damage. Let me tell you, you learn the ins and outs of a game conclusively when you do that!
Right after you advance to the second floor, a big green floppy disk with the word "saved" appears in the corner. Right off the bat, the game says, "Hey, I save the game when you change floors!" If you're pissed about that, you're not actively playing this game.
Nobody's saying it's not clear that the game autosaves. It obviously is. We're just explaining why that's a problem.
Secondly, if you worry that you make a mistake, you can close and restart the software. Or, if you are familiar with video games since the SNES, you can press L+R+Select+Start to do a soft-reset. Only takes a few seconds of experimentation to figure that out.
When a game requires to you reset it externally — there's no in-game option to restart from an old save, or to reload a level — because otherwise you'll be fenced into an unwinnable situation, that's a pretty text book example of bad design.
Of course you can reset the game. You can reset any game. That doesn't really have a bearing here, and the fact that you'd have to reset it in order to advance — or, rather, in order to not get trapped for eternity in a situation from which you can't escape — only highlights how clunky this game really is.
Thirdly, how are you accidentally opening doors or picking up items?
Just the way you explained it happening to you. The fact that it's possible to lose your keys that way, or to pick up an item you don't want, is problem enough. The fact that you would then have to reset the game externally or risk getting stuck in an unwinnable place is even worse!
As far as roguelikes go, this is pretty standard stuff
This is not a roguelike.
Nothing is randomly generated
That's why this is not a roguelike.
you can replay segments with no surprises as much as you like until you're satisfied with the outcome.
As long as you don't mind resetting the game constantly, that is.
I must have just been feeling really happy about being done with Christmas Wonderland 2.
This actually sounds less fun than Dragon Crystal
I like Dragon Crystal quite a lot! I almost used it as a comparison point in this review, but I thought that might be a bit misleading, as the combat in that game is turn-based (and, well, is actual combat), and its levels are randomly generated. Here it's the same thing every time.
Considering this is completely unplayable, shouldn't it be a 1/10?
It's not completely unplayable...it's unplayable after a certain point. And what is playable is quite good. See the other comments folks have left about other versions of this game and you'll see it's not a totally lost cause. It's a port that fails to accept input for more than half the time you'll play it which is a huge problem, but unlike our other 1/10s it wasn't completely hopeless.
Shortly before I downloaded it, played it, and wrote the review. You asked how I got the code if it wasn't confirmed yet...that's not a question I really understand. They sent it to me, same as every review code. Whether or not — and when — they "confirm" it publicly is their business.
is there ANY Point in buying this if I have the original arcade game on Pac man an galaga dimensions?
Having it on your system permanently as opposed to needing the cart is a big selling point to me for a game like this, but your mileage may vary. You also get restore points, obviously, but if you use them on Pac-Man you're history's greatest monster.
the 1960's TV jingle music of the catalogue screen
I wasn't sure if that was just a placeholder piece when I got the preview build, but it seems like it's survived to the final. Anyone who's seen It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia should recognize this one.
Oh finally, we get to play the Dempa Men demo. Why not release the game at the same time though?
If I remember correctly NA also got the demo before the full release. I'm not saying it's a great idea, but one positive side effect was that you'd have a lot of time to level up your squad in the demo, so that when the full version comes they'll be powerhouses. It's great that they let you export your team...a very generous feature in a very great game!
I do remember when a game like this came in Windows (it was 3.11)
Now I'm jealous! My Windows just came with Solitaire and Minesweeper. (I think I just had 3.1.) We managed to find some shareware version of this game though and passed it around like crazy.
Some of my classmates were swept away by Doom...but me and my friends organized Mahjong parties.
As mentioned in the review this is a solitaire variant — one of many, many, many variants, fans of which wouldn't like to hear that they aren't real! — and it's quite a popular one if the number of other games devoted to it is anything to go by. I used to play this for hours with my friends on my old school computers. It's a great deal of fun.
It might seem like a middling score, but what Morgan doesn't tell you is that he invested over 5,000 hours in this game already, and he's not stopping any time soon. The man's totally addicted!
It's pretty clear from this review alone that @Barbiegurl777 and I have different opinions on this game, and that's okay. She has every right to those opinions, and I'm glad she feels comfortable enough here to share them.
Let's not pick on anyone. Discuss, by all means, but please don't insult! As far as I'm concerned all this means is that she spent money on this game and was glad she did. That sounds to me like good news, regardless of my own feelings about the game!
I'd rather like to see at least Mega Man II and Mega Man III from the GAME BOY hit the 3DS VC before anything else.
I'd say it's a given that we'll be getting the rest of the GB games...it's just a question of when. I don't see why it matters that we get them "before anything else," it's all coming!

Re: Capcom Wants Your Help For Future Digital Releases
My favorite part is when they asked me if I wanted digital versions of Mega Man 9 and 10.

Re: Review: Castle Conqueror - Heroes 2 (DSiWare)
How do you find the time to play all these games Phil? Some of them are super long.
Advance review codes help...but not as much as my long daily commute by train. I get a lot of gaming and reading done then.
Re: Feature: The Confusing World of Mega Man Spin-Offs - Part 1

Ron will be sssigned Crazy Hunter reskins until the day he dies. Mark my words.
Re: Feature: The Confusing World of Mega Man Spin-Offs - Part 1
Didn't Legends come out before Mega Man Zero??
Yes, but chronologically Zero takes place before Legends, so we're following the timeline.
As far as the side series games go, my personal favorite titles are undoubtedly Zero. I absolutely love them.
Re: Feature: Mega Man Retrospective - Part Two
Hope you do a part 3
There will be a part 3...kinda.
Re: Review: Hydroventure: Spin Cycle (3DS eShop)
I can't not hear Alan Partridge reading that tagline...
Re: Feature: Mega Man Retrospective - Part One
Bah, the disappearing ice blocks in the first Mega Man were certainly not "luck!"
We said the floating platforms (aka, the Foot Holders). Not the disappearing blocks. The Foot Holders do indeed run on a random pattern.
And it's not like the scoring system was actually detrimental; it was just there.
I'll go back in time and delete the part where we said it was detrimental.
Re: Feature: Mega Man Retrospective - Part One
Fun fact: I played these games to death as a kid...but only because I rented the heck out of them and played with friends. Until I was an adult, I only actually owned one Mega Man game.
That game was Mega Man DOS.

Cake Ninja Xmas.
That's all I wanted to say.
Just...Cake Ninja Xmas.
Re: Review: Chuck E. Cheese's Alien Defense Force (DSiWare)
If it's not broken, shouldn't it get a 2?
We thought about that, but since it offers even less content for more money, and it's still not any good, we were comfortable giving it the dreaded 1.
Re: Capcom Has A Whole Year Of Mega Man Celebrations Planned
you know, Mega Man has five brands: Classic, X, ZX, Battle Network/Star Force, and Legends.
What?! What about Zero!?
Re: Capcom Announce Street Fighter X Mega Man
ha its not the first time megaman has used the hadouken
Actually it is! X and Mega Man are two different characters.

Re: Satoru Iwata is 53 Today
Iwata stopped by the house yesterday. He demanded a slice of birthday cake. I said, "It isn't your birthday until tomorrow."
He then stood in the corner and stared at me without blinking until my nipples fell off. It took four and a half hours.

I'll take it.
Re: Review: Bloons TD 4 (DSiWare)

Re: Latest Iwata Asks Episode Reveals Why Paper Mario Sticker Star Abandoned RPG Elements
I don't know where Miyamoto is getting this idea that a game doesn't need a thick juicy story to be enjoyable.
He's probably getting it from the fact that a game doesn't need a thick juicy story to be enjoyable, but I'd have to see a citation to be sure.
Re: Review: Pac-Man (3DS eShop / NES)
When did they give you that review code?
Shortly before I downloaded it, played it, and wrote the review. You asked how I got the code if it wasn't confirmed yet...that's not a question I really understand. They sent it to me, same as every review code. Whether or not — and when — they "confirm" it publicly is their business.
Re: Review: Pac-Man (3DS eShop / NES)
If it was the ARCADE game I would do it instantly, but the awful and deeper sound effects of the NES version make me want to keep P&G...
Well, yeah, but you asked if there was any reason you might want this as well, and that's what I answered.
And BTW, how did you get a review copy of this game if we never got it confirmed?
I'll contact Nintendo and complain immediately.

Yep! You get to keep all stats, progress and items in the transfer, so no time spent in the demo is wasted.

Re: Review: Nano Assault Neo (Wii U eShop)

Re: Review: 3D MahJongg (3DS eShop)
Well for one this isn't real Mahjong.

Re: Guild 01's Aero Porter Is Landing On The 3DS eShop This Month

Seaman is great. In fact I have Seaman in my pocket right now.
Re: Tomorrow Corporation Turns Up The Heat With New Little Inferno Trailer
@Tantan: Having played through the game twice, I can say that @FiveDigitLP has a perfectly valid reading of Little Inferno.
So do you.
It's wide open to interpretation, and I agree that it will be interesting to read those interpretations when the game launches.
Re: Nintendo Download: 15th November 2012 (North America)
Power of Illusion looks more like a GBA game than a 3DS game. Considering what 3DS is capable of, they could've done much better than that.
Yeah, it was pretty stupid of them to go with an appropriately classic art style for a classic character in a tribute to classic games and films.
Wait, what?
Re: Tomorrow Corporation Turns Up The Heat With New Little Inferno Trailer
Still I wonder.. WHAT DO YOU DO?!
You burn things.
Don't look any deeper than that.
Re: Nintendo Download: 15th November 2012 (Europe)
Anyone who votes "nothing for me" on the week of Crashmo / Fallblox is DEAD TO ME.
Other votes are okay. You can download something else first. I will allow that.
But to pass on this game is to incur my wrath.
