Re: Random: YouTuber Ludwig Announces His Own Super Smash Bros. Tournament

Merry_Blind

@Jacket_p Of course Ludwig is using this opportunity to elevate his own platform a bit, but you have to keep in mind that before becoming a big mainstream streamer, he was from the Smash Melee community and still actively part of it. It's not a new thing. He's doing this for the community first and foremost; if anything, he might be losing money doing this.

Also, the main goal of this is to sabotage Panda Cup's viewership and help VGBC to cut some of their loss from SWT getting cancelled. It also acts as a bait to see if Nintendo try to cancel the event. If they do, it will add more fuel to the fire and make even more people come out with their pitchforks to stand against Panda and Nintendo.

Re: PSA: Switch Connection Problems? We Wouldn't Recommend Nintendo's Network Fix

Merry_Blind

@PeteW If you're close to your router anyway I would highly recommend getting an ethernet adapter. Sure Nintendo have no excuse to provide such poor "netcodes" to their games, but being wired really does help because you don't have to rely on Nintendo's very basic lag mitigation implementations.

Even if you don't notice lag or don't get disconnected, you may still get some desyncs without realizing it, causing some of your shots to not register and whatnot.

Re: Splatoon 3 Demo Server Tick Rate Is Apparently 30% Slower Than Original's

Merry_Blind

@Otoemetry Well just physically, some setups might be complicated to get wired up because the Switch might be very far away from the router on a different floor. It was just a disclaimer since some people just can't or don't want a super long cable going all around their house.

If your router is close to your Switch, then I would HIGHLY recommend getting an Ethernet adapter if you play ANY online games on it. No reason not to.

Re: Splatoon 3 Demo Server Tick Rate Is Apparently 30% Slower Than Original's

Merry_Blind

@Rykdrew You are correct! The "netcode" implemented by the developers for their respective game is the main culprit for a poor multiplayer experience. At a very basic level, there are essentially two approaches to handle connections; "Lockstep" and "Predictive".

Lockstep means the game stops processing more information as soon as there is a delay between the players or with the servers and waits for the connection(s) to catch up and sync back up. The advantage is what's happening on screen is always 100% accurate, but it can cause the game to visually freeze or hang or stutter. The only compensation devs can use for this to make it smoother is to add input delay to give more time for the connections to keep up. This is what Smash, Samurai Shodown, Mario Party, and Mario Maker use. Fighting games just require a lot more precision from players, so any kind of instability is extremely noticeable and annoying, at least compared to something like Mario Party.

Predictive means the game tries to predict what the players were going to do when the connection is unstable or slow, and then corrects its predictions as it goes if it detects the players actually did something else. This has the advantage of always letting the game running seemingly smoothly, but can cause "desync". Desync can cause opponents to teleport around, hits to not register properly, deaths to be delayed, etc. This is what Mario Kart, Splatoon and many other games use. That's why sometimes in Mario Kart you throw an item at an opponent and it seemingly does nothing despite visually hitting them.

The problem with "predictive" is that the behaviours I just described would make fighting games like Smash unplayable if opponents were teleporting around and hits falsely registering. You may have seen the term "rollback" be thrown around for fighting games; this is an advanced form of predictive system that mitigates those drawbacks, but is seemingly difficult to implement properly. Most recent fighting games now finally use this. Samurai Showdow is actually getting a rollback update next year, so you can look forward to that!

Playing wired simply avoids having the netcode try to compensate when the connection gets too slow. Makes a big difference for a game like Smash which compensations are more freezes and more input delay.

Also, the Switch wi-fi chip is bad, and inherently has inconsistent latency, so that doesn't help either. Your PC with Steam likely has a better wi-fi chip, and the games you play on it likely have better netcode than Nintendo.

Re: Splatoon 3 Demo Server Tick Rate Is Apparently 30% Slower Than Original's

Merry_Blind

@Otoemetry Well of course it can always be the other players who are lagging, but playing wired (if your situation allows it) ensures that your own connection is never at fault. Personally I've played the Splatoon 3 Splatfest for about 4 hours, and only noticed some minor desync ONCE, and got 2 matches ended prematurely due to someone disconnecting. My experience overall was very smooth apart from that, but I am wired.

If you experienced desync somewhat regularly, then your connection might be unstable at times due to being on Wi-Fi.

Re: Sakurai Reveals How A Chance Encounter Led To Sora In Smash Bros. Ultimate

Merry_Blind

@buggysdad I think people mainly wanted Waluigi because it just doesn't make sense for him not to be in already. Why is Daisy and Piranha Plant in the game, but not Waluigi? Why can't Wario have his number 2 (pun intended)? Waluigi and Toad are the two iconic Mario characters just left out for some reasons.

At least that's the sensible crowd... then there's the memer social media crowd "waluigi lul funny"

Re: PSA: Sensitive To PWM Flicker? You'll Want To Keep The Switch OLED's Screen Nice And Bright

Merry_Blind

Goddamnit. I hate that stuff. Even if you don't notice it, it puts more strain on your eyes, and can give headaches to some people. Most screens still use this even today. I don't understand why so many companies don't seem to care about it.

OLED TVs don't have this issue. Didn't expect the Switch OLED to have it, even though it's not completely fair to compare both of these products.

Re: It Seems Masahiro Sakurai Will Be Ending His Famitsu Columns Very Soon

Merry_Blind

@Bakfug It comes from the fact Sakurai has been known to overwork himself in the past and has had to learn to not do this as much these days. Also from how comitted and dedicated to Smash he has been for over 20 years. Also because he is reputed to be a perfectionist, and scrutinizing every aspect of what he works on.

I get your point, but denying Sakurai isn't seemingly a harder worker than the average man out there is just being oblivious to his reputation and feats throughout his career.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Looking Forward To Playing On Switch OLED?

Merry_Blind

@Chowdaire Haven't played the Switch port, but Souls games have many areas that are intentionally dark though. A lot of people tend to raise the brightness to compensate, but you're not supposed to do that. Those games specifically have lanterns and/or torches to light those areas (playing Bloodborne with low brightness makes the game look so much better and scarier and makes the torch necessary)

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Receives Its First Update - Resolves "Several Issues"

Merry_Blind

I have a better solution for the camera that I never see anyone bring up. Just enable camera controls when the sword is sheated, and disable them when the sword is out. Click Right-Stick to draw the sword out. You're constantly sheating the sword anyway whenever you run, interact with stuff, climb, etc.

Voila, simple, intuitive fix, which doesn't require you to constantly hold a button to turn the camera. They can always keep the current solution only for when the sword is out if you reeeeaaally need the camera for some reasons while you're fighting.

Re: Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island

@zool Nintendo have always been slow with their releases. That's nothing new. Literally always been the case. They always have games droughts.

Either way, I'm not "sure" since I don't work for Nintendo, it's just it's never a secret who the developers behind their remasters are and it's usually not Nintendo's own studios. It's information easy to find.

Taking Skyward Sword as an example, I personally was able to find plenty of information on what was different in this new version, and base my decision to buy it on that information.

The value for money is for yours to decide, not for a website to decide for you. Reviews usually mention if a game is long, how much it's improved visually, etc.

Re: Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island

Merry_Blind

@zool All those things are usually covered in reviews of remasters/remakes. Then once that information is provided to you, it's up to you to decide if you want to get that new version or go up in your loft to get your original copy.

These releases usually don't seem to impact Nintendo's new releases as they are generally handled by third-parties, while first party studios keep working on that new thing (that's how it is for Zelda remasters and new Zelda games for example).

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th May (North America)

Merry_Blind

@Ghost_of_Hasashi Just saw that! Loved that game when I was a kid. Been waiting for a re-release to replay it for more than 10 years at this point lol. Definitely buying it tomorrow! Though I hope it has online play as I'd like to replay it with my friend I played it with back then and Covid makes couch co-op more difficult.

I remember the original already had an export and import system for characters to migrate between save files so they could use the same system for online.

Re: Team Ninja Says It's "Waiting" For Ryu's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Invite

Merry_Blind

@Rohanrocks88 Depends who you ask. Personally I don't care for Minecraft, but Steve is still one of the biggest reveals by far, and it totally deserves the recognition. I also never cared for Final Fantasy, but come on Sephiroth is a badass, and got one of the best reveal receptions right up there with Banjo-Kazooie. Don't care for Xenoblade either, but Pyra/Mythra seem to be one of the best received character gameplay-wise (everyone keeps talking about how fun and crazy they are to play as or against).

Personally, gameplay-wise, Sephiroth and Pyra/Mythra are my 2 favourites of all the DLCs so far (yes I love swords hehe).

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 11.0.1 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Merry_Blind

@RareFan K. Rool has been buffed so often already, I'm not sure what else K. Rool players want.

Banjo-Kazooie do need some love as they are very slightly lacking. Not sure what though. The only thing I've seen mentioned that'd make sense would be to slightly buff their grab range.

Cloud is just fine the way he is, if anything he actually needs a few hitbox buffs/fixes as the tip of his sword doesn't actually have a hitbox on a few moves, as if his sword was literally just a big rectangle without the "triangle" tip at the end.

Byleth is a very average character, who finally got barely better last patch. Git gud instead of asking for nerfs. If anything, Byleth will get buffed more, not nerfed.

Finally, waaaayyy too early to be asking to nerf a brand new character. Let the meta develop around them first for a few weeks.

Re: Capcom Switch And 3DS Sale Discounts Monster Hunter, Mega Man, Resident Evil And More (North America)

Merry_Blind

@Lordd_G Onimusha Warlords was the original PS2 version. Genma Onimusha was an enhanced Xbox version. Better visuals (not drastically so doesn't matter these days), more and modified content (new enemies, new weapons and new armors, new items, etc.), modified progression (door X will need a key on one version but not the other, etc.), new mechanic (green orbs that make enemies go berserk or allow you to go invincible).

Can't remember everyting but there was a lot of small enhancements that added up basically. Genma Onimusha was by far the better version, but good luck playing that one today (used to be bugged on X360, not sure if they fixed it since then, maybe it runs well on Series S/X).

Amazing game either way. One of Capcom's best IMO. Pretty short, but a blast from start to finish, and one of the games I've replayed the most through the years. Highly recommended (using d-pad for movement sucks though and sucked even back when it first came out, not sure if the remaster supports the left stick for movement).

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 11.0.0 Update Arrives Later Today

Merry_Blind

@The_Pixel_King Best place to start is still Izaw's "Art of Smash" series. He has a suite of general guides to learn the core game mechanics (Part 1 below), and makes deep character guides too. Long videos, but surprisingly concise and clear throughout; there`s just a lot to cover.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta3L35wsE6o

Though if you're that new to the series, just playing Adventure mode and against friends and playing the game in general will make you improve quickly for a while either way.

Re: Video: Here's Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Looking Stunning In 4K, 60FPS

Merry_Blind

@Pod This is literally the same art direction as the 3DS remake. Bumping the resolution and frame rates up don't change an art direction, and the textures pack used is upscaled textures staying as true to the originals as possible.

You probably just don't like the 3DS art direction compared to N64 to begin with, which is fair.
