Depending on how you feel about food and motorcycle themed Pokémon, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea region looks to have one of the more creative Pokédexes in recent memory. Both Lechonk and Fidough have garnered an unhealthy amount of obsession across the internet, and all three starters have received near-universal praise, which didn't extend to our attempt at designing their evolutions.
While the Paldea Pokédex shows promise, how did the Pokédexes of the other eight regions fare? From Kanto to Hisui, we thought we’d take a look back at both the standout and more forgettable ‘mons added to each – a tall task with over 900 of the creatures to date.
Keeping in mind that liking a Pokémon or not is entirely subjective (except for like Bruxish and Greedent, right? They’re just terrible), we analysed each Pokédex based on what they have in common: the Starters, the Pikachu-like cute rodent, the fossils, the pseudo-Legendary, the Legendary trios, and so on. Then, we looked at the designs from that Generation that stood out and compared them to how many utterly unremarkable Pokémon filled up that specific ‘dex.
Remember, we're ranking (collectively) the new Pokémon added to each game, not the game itself. Also, there's a poll at the end, so feel free to have your say and vote for your personal best 'dex there.
Ready? Read on to find out which Pokédex our infallible methods placed where, from worst to best.
8. Johto’s Pokédex (Generation II)

We love the Johto region for so many reasons, but its Pokédex is not one of them. We’d argue that of the 100 new Pokémon added in Johto, three-quarters of them failed to leave an impression. Ledian, Stantler, Pineco, and Sunflora feel like uninspired rejects from Kanto. Some, such as Murkrow and Piloswine, wouldn’t receive viable evolutions until two generations later. Baby Pokémon, while cute, garner about as much excitement as a low-level Sentret.
Before you get out your pitchforks and storm Nintendo Life HQ like a horde of incensed Miltank, the three starters (yes, including Chikorita) and their evolutions aren’t bad, and the Johto’s Legendaries – Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia – rank near the top. Johto also deserves credit for introducing Espeon and Umbreon and the Tyranitar line, the latter being one of two non-Dragon pseudo-Legendaries.
Yet other than these and a handful more ‘mons (like Scizor), the unfortunate truth remains: compared to other regions, the majority of new Pokémon introduced in Johto are disappointing.
7. Kalos’s Pokédex (Generation VI)

The Kalos Pokédex gave us the smallest amount of new additions at 72, mostly because Mega Evolutions padded things out. While this smaller sample size isn’t a problem in itself, it becomes one when forgettable ‘mons filled the Pokédex along with lacklustre Starters outside of the Greninja line. In fact, we’d argue that Kalos has the worst Starter line-up in all of Pokémon. The likes of Malamar, Carbink, and Aromatisse didn’t help.
Xerneas and Yvetal serve as Kalos’s Legendary duo, and while their designs still impress, Zygarde, Diancie, Hoopa and Volcanion never received enough of a spotlight to cement them as memorable Legendaries. Other ‘mons, such as Noivern, Hawlucha, and Sylveon we love to see included in later games, but the fact remains that much like Johto, the majority added in Kalos are forgettable.
6. Unova’s Pokédex (Generation V)

We must give credit to the Unova Pokédex for its record-setting 156 new Pokémon, and at the same time, we have to take some credit away for introducing the second-worst starter lineup. While Oshawott ain't so bad, the Snivy and Tepig lines (more Fire/Fighting!) fail to live up to the Fire and Grass types that came before. Similarly, the recurring themes, such as the rodent Patrat, the plain bird Pidove, and even the pseudo-Legendary dragon Haxorus, all fall short of their counterparts in other Pokédexes.
The Unova Pokédex does redeem itself with a few stellar designs. Lilligant, Darmantian, Minccino, and the regalness of Volcarona, made an impression. Unova suffers from what we like to call ‘Legendary bloat’ with 12 in total. Furthermore, the box Legendaries, Reshiram and Zekrom, feel rather plain compared to their counterparts, though the Forces of Nature – Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorous – make up for this with their unique genie-like designs. Still, the more there are, the less legendary they feel.
5. Alola’s Pokédex (Generation VII)

The Alola Pokédex introduced the first regional variants, yet Game Freak still managed to pack in a respectable 88 completely new Pokémon along with the 18 Alola forms of Kantonian Pokémon. Its Starters of Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio we place above average only because Rowlet is the best. He's just so round.
The rest of the Pokédex stands out as having a high ratio of memorable Pokémon such as Mimikyu, Lycanroc, and Tsareena. A handful of oddball designs also add to the Pokédex’s personality – Gumshoes, Crabomidable, and Sandyghast come to mind – but the less said about Bruxish and Komala, the better.
Unfortunately, Alola suffers from the worst Legendary bloat of all Pokédexes with the inclusion of Ultra Beasts, which, while we appreciated the creativity, were a little too wacky for our tastes. Together with traditional Legendaries, including the well-designed Solgaleo and Lunala, Alola hits 18 total, cutting its Pokédex down to 70 regularly occurring ‘mons. We're glad Game Freak cut back on Legendaries after this Generation.
4. Galar’s Pokédex (Generation VIII)

Surprised to see the Pokédex that brought us Dexit so high? When we went through and looked at all the Pokémon added in Galar, we were too. Say what you will about Starters’ bipedel, human-like evolutions, the rest of this Pokédex is brimming with great designs. The wicked designs of Corviknight, Toxtricity, and Coalossal pair well with the adorableness of Morpeko, Wooloo, and Snom. Yes, Greedent’s stupid berry-eating face should be erased from existence, and most detest the three chimeric fossil Pokémon, but then we have the Dragapult line, which we’d argue gives Dragonite and Garchomp a run for the title of best pseudo-Legendary with how it shoots Dreepy from its horns.
The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC introduced the stellar Kubfu and Urshifu. We’re indifferent to Calyrex’s massive noggin, but the horses it rides, Glastier and Spectrier, grew on us quickly. We appreciate how the Galar Pokédex kept the Legendary bloat to a minimum even with the DLC, though we can’t say Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus stack up well to other Legendary trios like Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza.
A handful of uninteresting Galarian forms – Stunfisk, really? – round out this Pokédex that might’ve placed higher if the top three were stronger.

I think all gens are objectively good, but each has a unique style, and the different styles will appeal to different people. My favourite is Sinnoh, but that’s probably because it’s my native region.
Sinnoh > Unova > Galar > Alola > Kalos > Hoenn > Kanto > Johto > Hisui
I'm torn between sinnoh and kalos
Kalos did change things up nicely with the introduction to fairy types and mega evolutions.
So, you still haven't figured out how "ranked from best to worst works"?
It's not that hard, honestly. Especially when multiple people already told you last time.
Hoenn is best but I'll take it being in 2nd place since gen 1 is a close 2nd to me anyway
Even though my favorite region is Johto I think the best Dex was Sinnoh's. A lot of variety in types and designs and also introduces a lot of evolutions to some classic Pokémon from
Gen I
Johto mons are the best, in terms of art design Gen 2 is where the series capped.
Just my personal list:
1. Hoenn
2. Kanto
3. Sinnoh
4. Alola
5. Unova
6. Kalos
7. Johto
8. Galar
Why is Kalos placed at Number 7? What kind of hate-b*ner does this website hold against Gen 6?
Kalos designs were universally acclaimed. And they literally had the best Pokémon because Game Freak this time actually focused on the Quality of the Pokémon rather than its Quantity after the frowned upon designs of Gen 5.
Ask literally any one in the Pokémon community and they tell you that Gen 6 had excellent designed Pokémon. This is so ridiculous.
Hoenn and Shinnoh are always high on my list.
Galar and Kalos have some good Pokémon too.
Unova really tried to fill up the world as much as possible with only new Pokémon… at a cost, but yet I still think it doesn’t rank on bottom.
But Kanto on number 1?
Really? (unless for nostalgia reasons)
For me even Johto ranks higher, and that says something from a Pokedex where I only care about Ho-Oh, Celebi, Unown, Sudowoodo and Tyranitar.
But each to their own I guess.
I wouldn’t say any Pokedex is really bad, underwhelming at worst (Kanto and Alola for me)
Also I don’t understand the issue with many legendaries, nothing wrong there and honestly I missed them in Kalos for example, because in the games Volcanion, Diancie and Hoopa were event only Pokémon.
Removed - unconstructive feedback; user is banned
I won't stand for the Malamar hate. Especially not from someone who praise Darmanitan.
Of course Kanto is 1st. Because of course.

(I'm joking obviously)
It's quite difficult for me to choose any one region as having the best selection of Pokemon because they're pretty much unanimous in having both really good and bad ones. However, for my money, I'm going to go a controversial route and say Galar. Slight bias aside what with me being so close to Britain and knowing it's culture like the back of my hand, the way they translated Britain as a whole into the Pokemon designs was incredible. From the obvious of Polteageist, Stonjourner and Galarian Weezing to the brilliantly creative of Orbeetle, Dragapult and Runerigus, the entire Pokedex of new mons is filled to the brim with bangers. There are definitely ones I don't like (looking at you Thievul) but I can find something positive to say about almost all of them.
As for my least favourite then....I know it's an obvious one but probably Kanto. It has great designs in there don't get me wrong (the starters, Arcanine, Dragonite, etc.) but some of them are just plain dull (Hypno, Muk, Seaking) and if you're dull as a Pokemon? I'm sorry but that's just a cardinal sin really.
Feels like this article was made for the sole purpose of inciting arguments among the fandom lol.
I personally really like gen 5's lineup. But you have to admit that Gen 1 is as iconic as it gets.
Where can I find a big wallpaper of the Let's Go illustration of Kanto, with all the Pokemon scattered about? I love Let's Go promo art so much.
1. Kanto
2. Johto
3. Sinnoh
4. Galar
5. Hoenn
6. Alola
7. Kalos
8. Unova
That’s my rankings. Even if Gen 5 had the best game, it easily had the worst Pokémon. If we count Hisui, I’d put it in second place, I think.
"the pseudo-Legendary dragon Haxorus"
Hydreigon: screams in Unovan
@NintendoKnight I have to disagree, aside from mega evolutions and a few great Pokemon (Aegislash, Hawlucha, Greninja), almost the entire pokedex was extremely forgettable or just straight up ugly.
This is my order based on mega evolutions being included in the pokedex.
1, Sinnoh
2, Kalos
3, Unova
4, Kanto
5, Hoenn
6, Alola
7, Johto
8, Galar
I was hoping for this list to rank the actual Pokedex of each generation. Like, the actual electronic device that your character uses.
If I was to rank them by how many new pokemon I actively dislike, Black/White would be the worst offender by a wide margin, with Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield competing for second. The original 151 still hold up the best, at least in part due to nostalgia, though I'd agree Gold/Silver does a lot worse than Ruby/Sapphire. Diamond/Pearl and X/Y both fall in the middle.
@jodudeit That's also exactly what I thought first. ^^
Wow, yet another subjective tier list that changes with every person. Keep up the good work nintendo life, also stop with the gen 6 slander, you can't tell me that nearly all of its ner mons aren't the best.
Unova starters sucked, but it had a lot of great new mons, including finally giving some variety for bug pokemon. Hydreigon and Haxorus are the best dragons IMO. Galvantula, Ferrothorn, Mandibuzz, Chandelure, Zoroark, Golurk? Sinnoh needs to be dropped to the bottom and Unova moved way up.
@BlueBCA glad somebody else noticed
While I agree with most, if not all, the points made here this is the order I would have placed them in:
8 Johto
7 Unova
6 Kanto
5 Hoenn
4 Alola
🥉Kalos
🥈Galar
🥇Sinnoh 🏆
From worst to best (with my favourite form each cos why not?)
Gen 8 - Appletun (Followed by Inteleon and toxicity)
Gen 5 - Zoroark (Followed by Volcarona and Hydreigon)
Gen 6 - Goodra (Followed by Greninja and Braixen)
Gen 2 - Ampharos (Followed by Espeon, Aipom and Crobat)
Gen 1 - Eevee (Followed by Blastoise, Nidoqueen/King and Alakazam)
Gen 4 - Garchomp (Followed by Torterra, Gliscor, Lucario and Buizel, Electivire)
Gen 7 - Mimikyu (Best ever) (Followed by Decidueye, Toucannon, Incinaroar, Alohan Ninetales, Minior)
Gen 3 - The three starters (Followed by Requaza, Deoxys, Latios, Gardevoir, Hariyana, Mawile, Wailord, Snorunt, Flygon, Milotic, Duskull and Banette)
@Dilly-Mick It's been a bug bare of mine for years. Pseudo legendaries are a pretty clearly defined group, their main defining characteristic being their 600BST when fully evolved. There's only ever one new pseudo-Legendary line introduced per region, except Hoenn which had both Metagross and Salamence. Haxorus is not a pseudo. Its just a random, common 3-stage dragon line.
On a slightly related note, I think it's really cool that Hisui even has its own pseudo. Sinnoh already had Garchomp, so for Hisui they created a regional form of Goodra instead.
@EarthboundBenjy unpopular opinion the majority of the Kanto dex is overated and if for some reason a Pokemon like Snorlax was quietly shelved before the release and revealed as a "new" Pokemon today it wouldn't be as loved.
Pleasantly surprised Kanto made the top of the list! It’s hard to argue against the original 151 since they laid the groundwork for everything to come. The original pokedex really is the blueprint for every generation to follow.
@jodudeit Rotom Dex would’ve been the unquestioned king haha
I guess I'll add my own top 8, I've been playing since the first gen but tbh I don't look back super fondly on many Kanto Pokemon outside of a handful of them. (like Gengar, Starmie, Lapras etc) I think also because there's 151 of them there's just a lot of them I don't have much of an opinion on which kind of drags the dex down a fair bit. It also took me a long time to warm up to Sinnohs Pokemon too.
8. Kanto
7. Sinnoh
6. Johto
5. Kalos
4. Alola
3. Hoenn
2. Unova
1. Galar
Just for fun I tallied up everyone's rankings. (Half-points for ties)
Kanto and galar are the most devicive with half the votes scattered across the top 4 and the other half in dead last. Their tallies were so similar I'm listening them together
Johto is only slightly better with a few votes in the top three but but the majority being placed around 7th
Hoenn gets a mixed reception as well but generally viewed positivly, being the only region without a single vote below 6th place
Sinnoh was consistently ranked either 1st or third (Not a single vote for second though,) with only a couple votes lower than that
Unova has 1 or 2 votes in every placement. Which is impressive in of itself.
Kalos has a lot of hard stand stans but on the other side quite a few people don't really care for it either
Alola is the dunsparse of pokedexes... Constantly ranked in the middle with one person ranking it higher.
In conclusion people really like sinnoh (and to a lesser extent Kalos) Hoenn is nice, Alola is very... Middle... And everything else you either love it or hate it.
You know that meme, the "you can copy my homework, just change it a bit" one? Thats EVERY other region
Kanto, Johto and Kalos are my favourites. The last two Gens are pretty mediocre despite some great PM in them, Unova outside of the Legendary/Mythicals has the worst Dex of them all with some god awful PM in it, Sinnoh is pretty solid and its been great seeing them all again in the remakes and Legends and finally Hoenn is really good but i've never loved it outside of the Starters, Absol and Legendary/Mythicals.
@Dilly-Mick Snorelax is generally loved due to it serving a noticeable role in Gen 1 and played a big role in the Anime due to Ash catching one, it also has one of the better episodes of the Indigo era. Finally its monster/animal designed PM and those designed are generally really loved over others hence why Gen 1 is so loved as the vast majority of the designs are monster and animal based.
In my opinion, Best = Unova, Worst = Alola
What a surprise, Kanto is number one.
Kalos got dipped hard. Pyroar, Greninja, Talonflame, Clauncher, Pumpkabook, Trevenant, Dragalgae, Aegislash, Pangoro, Heliolisk, Florges and Gogoat all in one of the smallest dexes? And that's without mentioning favorites like Noivern, Hawlucha or Sylveon that the articles does. Tyrantrum and Auroros are only second to the Sinnoh fossils IMO. And Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde are probably my favorite box trio too. Even the mythicals are decent, with Hoopa and Volcanion being among the better mythical mons.
IDK, what a weird choice. Like I won't defend Binacle, Aromatisse, or Klefki, but it's still such a good dex.
I originally thought this article would rate the Pokédexes (Pokices?) by how absolutely bonkers the entries are for the Pokémon.
With the exception of bruxish, you can't really complain about any of the alolan designs. They're all so memorable!
Johto added the Steel and Dark typings, gave us super awesome evolutions to great Pokemon (Scyther -> Scizor, Chansey -> Blissey, Onix -> Steelix, etc), introduced the cutest baby Pokemon, and some super awesome legendaries in Lugia and Ho-oh. Even the weird additions like Shuckle and Gligar are super lovable for being so quirky. I can't stand it being ranked last in this article. Quality over quantity (unlike Gen 5 which had awful rehash designs of previous Gen Pokemon).
A bit cliche to say but earlier Gen Pokemon > latter Gen Pokemon as they are more animalistic in nature. Not a fan of the larger number of object-based and humanoid-like Pokemon/starters we see in later generations.
Haxorus isn't the Unova pseudo-legendary. Pseudos have a BST of 600 while Haxorus only has 540. Unova's pseudo is Hydreigon. Yes it is another dragon type, but its claim to fame is that it's primarily a special attacker that can abuse Draco Meteor, while all previous pseudos to that point were physically oriented. Just to add insult to injury, Hydreigon's base speed is literally one point higher than Haxorus's lmao 🤣
@link3710
If you won't defend Binacle or Klefki, then I will. Those two are some of my favourites from Gen 6.
I love the sillier looking monsters, and I like it when we get monsters based on animals we hadn't seen in Pokémon yet.
I think Binacle is the best way they could have done a barnacle in the Pokémon style.
And Klefki is such a cutie. A little pixie that likes shiny objects. Like a magpie, but specifically for keys.
People are always losing their keys right? The idea of the key-stealing gnome is an old one, and it makes for a great Pokémon concept.
I liked the list better when I read it best to worst…though when you realized the title is wrong, i didn’t like it as much.
My top region is Unova, btw.
Johto last, that's crazy.
Goodra makes Kalos Pokedex the best.
@EarthboundBenjy I mean, I like Klefki, so I agree with you, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a hard sell to most people. Binacle is honestly cute, but Barbaracle... that thing gives me the creeps.
@WallyWest that has nothing to do with it's design tho. (Barring your opinion that a Pokemon is inherently better based on it's source of inspiration, which could be the topic of a whole separate debate entirely) imagine if it didn't do all that and the first time we ever saw a Snorlax was in scarlet and violet...after we already knew bewear. Would it still be so iconic?
I stopped reading when I saw Johto at the bottom of the list
I actually would posit that Sinnoh has the worst. A good portion of its dex is eaten up with pre evolutions or evolutions or previous generation's mons. Even the new ones aren't all great. It's not a bad region or but I'd rank it at the bottom
TEAM HOENN FOR LIFE
Unova has my favorite Pokedex, then it's Kanto's. Who doesn't like a cub with that much drip? They even made trash a treasure. Garbodor is one of my all time favorites. It has the ancients, Golurk, and the aliens, Beheeyem...That Pokedex taps into plenty of fun and interesting elements.
When counting sinnoh, are we talking about the diamond and pearl version, or platinum?
Because the original version has a lot of stupid limitations such as locking new evolutions till you’ve unlocked the national dex… a move that was so unpopular, they brought it back in the remake
I just can't agree with Sinnoh being so high. As with all it had some great design but I felt so bored catching Pokémon there. A huge chunk of the new Pokémon required me to catch old Pokémon and evolve them in a slightly awkward way. That felt dull to me. (Somehow, far less so in Arceus which did exactly the same thing)
It's honestly hard to rank them all, Galar and Hoenn are my top two easily though. I love Galar's legendaries, they feel both the right level - they're not claiming to control space & time or be god, they just a local legend of powerful beings that saved the region - and they feel right for the pseudo British setting.
Alola and Sinnoh are probably the bottom two for me. Though Alola gets brownie points for the introduction of regional variants (though is a Sandshrew really still a Sandshrew if it's now all about ice not sand?... I don't know), but it also had a ton that didn't evolve.
I know what you mean about Kalos, I find it hard to defend as the game were my least favourite. But that being said looking back at that generation I really like a lot of the designs, Honedge, Hawlucha, Skrelp, Inkay, Clauncher, Fletchling, Scatterbug, Tyrunt, Goomy, Dedenne, Phantump, Bergmite, Noibat.... what's there is more good than bad. There's just not a lot new there.
And gen 1? Somewhere in the middle for me. We got Cubone but we got Mr mime. We got Ivysaur but we got Electrode. We got Slowpoke and Snorlax but we got Muk and Exeggcute. They're also just a bit confused. Dragonite looks more like a Charizard alternative design that to do with Dragonair. Venomoth and Buttery are definitely the wrong way around. Golem doesn't match Geodude and Graveller in any features bar being rock. The Nidorans have never been properly combined into one entry since. Kangaskhan and it's baby just breaks the way Pokémon work (this one doesn't evolve it just slowly grows up?). But you can forgive it a lot given it's the first one.
I'm confused with the voting system Kanto didn't have new pokemon, it was the og. Kanto had the best pokemon, probably wouldn't have made it otherwise. Imagine a world where Digimon ruled over pokemon.
Johto should be in the top half of the list, criminally low.
Black and White 2
imo: Kanto> Johto> Hoenn> Kalos> Unova> Alola> Galar> Sinnoh
@Dilly-Mick nah. A lot more work by a small group of devoted artists went into the first 151. After pokemon blew up, they brought in way more people and rushed everything to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible. That's why we've been getting so many more awful pokemon ever since. The ratio is way off. Same reason they over saturated the games with legendaries
@Gahdrii all of kantos pokemon are new.....
@Corvus96 literally the opposite of how it all happened. Kanto was a grab bag of ideas that were stuffed together in this new thing that nobody truly knew would take off or not. They weren’t designed all cohesively they literally just took some and stuck them on the end of evolution lines to pad it, hence Golem looking nothing like Geodude and Graveller. Johto was then mostly a grab bag of what was cut from Kanto. We know this, we have seen the original designs and the statements.
After then, when Pokémon had taken off and clearly had some sticking power, then they began to design cohesive Pokemon.
Not saying Kanto and Johto aren’t good, they are, or that all subsequent Pokémon are better, that’s subjective and not something I agree with. But let’s be reasonable and you know, not make up stuff about development history.
Legendary over saturation is almost certainly a Design choice as well.
I'm triggered by how this is called a ranking of each region's pokedexes, when it's actually a ranking of new pokemon introduced each gen. Those aren't at all the same thing.
@Ogbert I didn't make anything up. I've seen how they were made, and how they changed up the design teams. They brought people on to capitalize on the popularity, and the designs suffered. They were considerably less picky about what made the cut.
Alola is way too low, should be Top 3 tbh - many fresh, creative designs, the number of outright bad ones very low (i don't share the Bruxish dislike, imo it's a really cool tropical fish), even the controversial Ultra Beasts grew on me. (And Rowlet is not the only fantastic starter, so is Litten!). Regional forms = great idea too tho only Alolan Exeggutor and Marowak were truly awesome ideas.
Unova - a clear issue of "we have to make new 151 mons", so many forgettable/bad ones but also so many greats, especially towards the end of the Dex - Hydreigon (including its stellar evolution German-origin names ein-zwei-drei which correspond to the number of heads) is fantastic, so are Haxorus (is the author of the article drunk? Also one of the most badass shinies of all time), Volcarona, Mienshao, Chandelure, Bisharp, Scolipede, Braviary, Excadrill...
Kanto is honesty a bit similar case - so many iconic mons (no matter what anti-genwuners say), but also so many meh ones or too plain ones (a seal.)
Kalos is fine imo, tho imo behind Alola due to a very low number of new mons, also most of the new Fairies are just pink blobs (tho i don't hate them, both Aromatisse and Slurpuff are more interesting than something like Indeedee). Aegislash (Stance Change is one of the most creative Abilities/mechanics to date), Hawlucha, Greninja or Noivern rock tho (and what's the issue with Inkay and
Malamar? A good design including its evolution mechanics)
Galar - alright, mixed bag with some greats/goods (Dragapult, Toxtricity/ Urshifu, Frosmoth, Centiskorch, Barraskewda, Duraludon, Coalossal..) but also quite many meh or too-out-there ones (Eiscue, Indeedee, the fossils, humanoid starters like Cinderace/Inteleon) where the phrase "jumping the shark" comes to mind. Middle-tier Dex for me.
Johto... yeah pretty well-described in the article.
Hoenn is really good overall - some duds but soo many today-iconic mons and strong designs (starters, legendaries, Metagross, Flygon, Milotic, Gardevoir, Salamence, Shiftry..) and very few of these are downright bad.
Imo top 3 should be some mix of Hoenn, Alola, Kanto and Sinnoh (which has a low number of new mons but most of them have aged very well - average Legendaries tho).
@Corvus96 just because you think newer pokemon are worse doesn't mean everyone agrees with you... In fact according to my easier tally, half the people here ranked Kanto as dead last
Also I've seen more primary sources supporting ogbert's version of events than yours
@swoose **right**??
@FoxMcMuffin why should other people vote based on your nostalgia?
Surprised this list was about how many iconic Pokemon were in the dex as opposed to the dex as a whole. Honestly, while Kanto started it all and has the most iconic mons because it was first, it's dex is far from the best, and that has a lot to do with balance. Some types only have a single line to represent them. And in game, because fighting had very few viable moves, it was pretty much a throwaway. Both of those are symptoms of it being the first awkward step into the Pokemon world. It's hard for a lot of people to accept or let go of, but while Kanto isn't the worst gen ever, it's absolutely not the best one.
Why is it a trend to mock Gen 6? Maybe it's because of the Kanto blindfold. Look, I Kan'to (ahah) praise Gen 1 designs die to how bland and uninspired most of them are, with only a few exceptions. Squirtle is a straight up blue turtle, Charizard is just a dragon with a burning tail, Dragonite is a cute plain dragon (and a missed potential, since Dratini and Dragonair were actually good), ... The only Gen 1 pokémon I really really like are Mr. Mime, Raichu, Starmie, the Bulbasaur line and Eevee. The rest are just to animal-like. They're perceived as iconic only and only because they were the 1st ones.
My list goes like this (with my favourite pokémon following):
1 - Kalos (I'm crazy for the Fennekin line, Meowstic, Clawitzer, Gourgeist, Diancie, Talonflame, Sylveon, ... pretty much all of them - they were so elegant and creative)
2 - Hoenn (Gardevoir, Grumpig, Absol, Mawile, Altaria)
3 - Unova (Gothitelle, Chandelure, Cinccino, Leavanny, the Snivy and Oshawott lines)
4 - Sinnoh (Mamoswine, Pachirisu, Piplup, Togekiss, Gliscor)
5 - Alola (Decidueye, Mimikyu, Alolan Ninetales, Oricorio)
6 - Galar (Orbeetle, Grimmsnarl, Frosmoth, Hatterene... I hate the starter lines, though)
7 - Johto (Ampharos, Jumpluff, the Cyndaquil and Chikorita lines)
8 - Kanto
1. Unova (sure, there are weak designs, but every gen has weak designs; Unova has the most all-time greats of any gen)
2. Alola (Ultrabeasts puts this over the top for me, such great designs, wish they'd revisit it)
3-5. Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos (Hoenn and Sinnoh are both solid gens, with a reasonable showing of strong designs; Kalos is weak in terms of fully new dex entries, but if you include megas, then it's in the running for middle-tier); Hisui can slot in somewhere in the middle too.
6. Kanto (it's classic, but massively overrated)
7. Johto (too many baby mons, too many weak designs, too few mons)
8. Galar (too much "Pokemon, but Bri'ish")
Stopped reading when the largest regional dex ever that introduced a brand-new type was second worst.
I think X and Y are boring, babyfied games that are sad follow-ons from the majesty of Unova BUT they objectively have one of the most incredible Pokedexes. It was so big it had to be split into three parts and it has absolute bangers. Ranking it low because 'meh starters' is absolutely silly.
I honestly believe the designs from gen 6 onwards have been the best in the series, ultra beasts included.
@Dilly-Mick never said everyone agrees with me. You shouldn't put words in people's mouths.
I've seen more primary sources that say exactly what I said. It's been talked about on Nintendolife in many articles in fact.
