I really prefer this approach the best, because it's the fastest, most direct way to get the information you want. Especially for those of us who really just want to get straight to the point: the games.
Don't care about the financial reports or market strategies or stage actors pretending to have "fun". I just want to see the games. Give me a new trailer and a release date, and I'm set.
It's about damn time! This may the first ND I get to watch while I'm not at work.
For this ND, I'm expecting a reiteration of MK8's release date, more info on Smash Bros, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Mario Golf, maybe another trailer for DKC:TF, and Yoshi's New Island...that's about it.
Just like a few of the others on this site, I'm keeping my expectations low. Though, I do hope for a few surprises.
In my opinion, Mario Kart 8 definitely NEEDS to be out earlier, like either March or April. I agree with what Williaint said--as good as DKC:TR will be it's NOT Mario Kart. Mario Kart is more or less Nintendo's Call of Duty, that game just moves consoles. Hell, MKWii is STILL moving Wiis after all this time.
Now Smash Bros U/3DS, that should be released in May. Yarn Yoshi, Monolithsoft's X, Bayonetta 2, and Hyrule Warriors need to be out this year.
And while it is interesting that Nintendo has decided to release DS titles on the WiiU Virtual Console, they SHOULD really be releasing N64 & Gamecube titles on it. And maybe a few popular JP console & arcade titles that never made it west.
And while they're at, how about fortifying the Nintendo Network for the imminent arrival of MK8 & SSBU/3DS. Remember how the Pokemon Bank crippled the 3DS network in Japan for a month? Imagine that mess x30.
What I want to see on the WiiU in 2014? Though HIGHLY unlikely, I'd like to see "X", Yarn Yoshi and Fire Emblem X SMT get released this year. But one could dream.
And maybe, just maybe during some ND this year we'll actually see a trailer for Zelda U, or Nintendo could let Platinum Games have a crack at Metroid. Why? One word. Vanquish.
I've been saying this for a while, but it's ALL up to Nintendo to make the WiiU successful. Which is more or less what they had to do with the 3DS over the past 2 years.
Until Nintendo is able/willing to release a console that's relatively on par with "current" PC specs, OR the rest of game industry collapses under it's current model, we've never gonna see any prominent 3rd party presence on a Nintendo console.
@Phantom_R In that story Link was basically a knight leading Hylia's Army to fight off the Demon King's forces. So yeah, that story would definitely fit the usual set-up for these musou/DynastyWarrior-type games.
That idea makes look forward to this game even more.
What do I think of the "New-Gen" environment? Well, seeing how neither the PS4 or the XBone have any worthwhile launch titles, and the rampant reports of buggy PS4 consoles......ehhhhh, I'll wait.
In the meantime, I'll be playing my WiiU, 3DS, and PS3.
Don't really care about SwapNote to be honest, the last time I used the app was when it initially launched, then I quickly forgot about it.
Only remembered that this was a thing due to this "incident."
Besides, I use my 3DS to play games, not to text or send poorly drawn doodles to my friends. I have several other devices that do those things already, and do it better .
What people keep forgetting is that Nintendo doesn't advertise unless there's a BIG upcoming title they want to promote, and they usually advertise it two weeks before and after the game's release.
The only 3DS commercials on TV(this year) were Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. And the only WiiU game they've advertised thus far has been Pikmin 3.
Give them another week or two and I guarantee you'll start seeing commercials for the Wind Waker HD deluxe bundle/price drop on Cartoon Network/Boomerrang, Nicktoons, and DisneyXD/HD/Jr.
@Yasume
I love how all the doomsayers said the same thing about Ocarina of Time 3D for the 3DS, funny how that turned out.
But seriously, the one thing all you doomsayers fail to realize EVERY console generation is that you never count Nintendo out.
That being said: I don't expect that big of a boost from WindWakerHD, but it and the price drop will at least get the ball rolling.
And they'll continue to gain momentum as Sonic Lost World follows after WWHD, then SM3DWorld, then DKC Tropical Freeze, no strong AAA exclusives from either the PS4 or the Xbone this holiday(and no PS4 launch in Japan til Feb' 14), the WiiU will definitely be in a better position than it is now.
Raises the stakes? Not by much IMO. A $50 price drop for the Vita, no compelling AAA exclusives at launch, and multi-platform ports of current-gen games. I see absolutely no reason to pick up a PS4(or a X-Bone) at the moment.
I'll pick one up when FFXV, KHIII, and MGSV drops, til then I'll have a ton of WiiU, 3DS and PS3 games to work my way through.
Definitely buying this.
That being said, I worry about how he handles those tracks that have a prominent techno medley like "Last Battle" and "Undersea Palace."
Especially "Last Battle", that was a purely techno piece, there's no way an orchestral rendition could do it any justice.
I think it's funny how people are already saying that "Sony and/or Microsoft has already won" even though neither of them has sold a single PS4 or XboxONE.
Beyond the news of initial preorders being sold-out(or shut-off), we have no idea how many units have actually been preordered or how many units will even be available to sell at retail on day one, etc.etc.
As far as we know, Sony & Microsoft's launch issues may mirror Nintendo's to a certain degree. My point is: We simply do not know.
And until we have ALL 3 next-gen consoles at retail with actual units on the floor to sell, we can't call anything. Anyone who does at this point is either moron or they have a Flux-Capacitor jerry-rigged to their car.
Nintendo is doing what any other corporation would do if someone was using their IP without their permission.
It's like someone breaking into house just to show-off your TV to other people. Yeah it was nice gesture, but you could have asked first, before I called the cops.

Re: Nintendo Direct: Special Mario Kart 8 Direct Shows New Features, Racers And Items
Ugh, and another 30 days to go......
Would it kill them to bump up the release date just a little bit, like the 16th or something.
Now about the new characters: I'm fine with Baby Rosalina, but not Pink Gold Peach. That's just a lazy reskin, just like Metal Mario.

Yep, had to go with Zero Suit Samus.
There's just something sexy about a woman with rocket-powered high-heels who utilizes kick based attacks.

@CrazyOtto
Hmmmm, interesting......
Now if we can only get more people in the gaming press to back up this source, we might have something.
Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Soundtracks - Where Are They?
I'd kill for the complete version of TLoZ: Symphony of the Goddesses OST, those 10 tracks on the Skyward Sword bonus CD aren't enough dammit.

Vanquish's gameplay + Metroid-style exploration = WIN.

Aww yeah!
Hope this one gets localized faster than SK-Burst.
Re: Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Is Bouncing Towards Japanese 3DS Consoles This August
"Like Senran Kagura Burst, the game will be a side-scrolling fighter packed with scantly-clad, large-chested female combatants."
^^Spoken like a freakin' poet.

Did not see this coming.....definitely picking this up on Day 1.
Re: Nintendo Direct Focusing On Wii U And 3DS Games Coming Spring 2014 To Air Tomorrow
My guess would be:
Jan- WiiU Fit & WiiU Sports Club(retail)
Feb- DKC:Tropical Freeze & Bravely Default
Mar- Mario Kart 8 & Mario Golf 3DS
Apr- Bayonetta 2 & Kirby:Triple Deluxe
May- Monolithsoft's X & Yoshi's Island 3DS.
Some SMT X Fire Emblem would be nice, but I doubt that.
We'll see tomorrow.
Re: Nintendo Direct Focusing On Wii U And 3DS Games Coming Spring 2014 To Air Tomorrow
@VictahVonDoom technically that honor belongs to the PSVita and the OUYA.

Re: Preview: Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3DWorld is my 2nd most anticipated game of the year, right behind TLoZ: A Link Between Worlds.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Nineteen
Batman:Arkham Origins(WiiU) and maybe a little Pokemon X, but mostly Batman:Arkham Origins.
Re: Mighty No. 9 Sets an Ambitious 3DS Stretch Goal
As soon as it hit the WiiU/PS3/360 goal I stopped caring, I'd much rather play this on my WiiU anyway.
Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Will Be Cheaper on Wii U
Glad I preordered the WiiU version.
Re: Talking Point: The Steam Gaming Machines Are An Unconventional Challenge to the Wii U
The Steambox seems kinda pointless.
From what I understand, it's a just console that can play PC games on the TV. Can't PCs and laptops do that already?
I mean that's what the HDMI output on latops and PC inputs on HDTVs are for. Sooooo, what's the point?
Instead of pissing away money on this, Valve should have been working on Half-Life 3.

Re: Talking Point: With Calls for Nintendo to Follow the Crowd, It Faces a Dilemma
The Vita TV really?!
Wasn't the main selling point of the PSVita was to have a "portable PS3 on the go"?
Which begs the question: So why should the average consumer buy this over an actual PS3? Because it sure as hell ain't for the games.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Sixteen
Tales of Xillia for the next few weeks.
