Nintendo has announced that a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation will air early next month, focusing on the newly-announced fighter, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Pyra and Mythra.
As is usually the case, the presentation will be hosted by series director Masahiro Sakurai. It'll take place on 4th March (2pm GMT / 3pm CET / 6am PT / 9am ET), showing off "an in-depth look" at the new two-in-one fighter and revealing their release date.
Nintendo notes that the presentation will be "roughly 35 minutes long," also making a point of confirming that no further fighter announcements will be made during the show.
As always, we'll make sure to cover the event right here on Nintendo Life, so make sure to join us for the presentation on 4th March.

Finally, something to look forward to in march other than spring break.
Granted it's next month, but you make it sound further away than it really is.
It's next week, 8 days away.
That picture looks like Mythra is about to smack Pyras head
Hope they come out right away or you can get em early like Sephiroth
This might be the first one I'm not tuning in for. I'm so indifferent towards the character and not even the music picks are of any interest to me. The only hope I really have is that they finally shoot Lloyd down in the mii fighter section.
And we all know how the Xenoblade 2 design "chastisers" will watch it:
Given that both Sephiroth and Steve were released just 12 days after they were revealed. Pyra and Mythra will probably release after the presentation. It'll probably end with "Pyra and Mythra will be available... ...Today"
@Expa0 No the music in Xenoblade 2 is great! I think it's the same people who remix some of the songs but I need to double check that
@nhSnork Agreed. Particularly when the developers and designers clearly wanted the focus of the player to be on their big round eyes.
I"m going to tune into this one like all the other ones. as a pokemon trainer main I think the time I had with switch between characters at the right time is going to transfer over really well on to this fighter, plus she is a female fighter I want to actually (And think I can) main WOOOO next week is going to be great. and don't forget about the mii's.
@nhSnork It took heavy censoring to even get her in LOL.
Yes plus banjo,Terry, and the 8th fe rep amiibo are out on March 26th
I'll pass on the presentation, don't want to get spoil on all the moves from the fighters as I want to discover moves by myself.
For once I'm moreso looking forward to seeing the Mii outfits than the revealed fighter and I still don't really care about the Mii outfits.
That said I'll be watching anyway, I'm curious if they'll announce anything else. Maybe they'll finally announce the ability to rearrange the character select screen or something. Unlikely, I know, but hey.
Will watch it, love Pyra, one of my favorite female characters made by Nintendo! Really looking forward to play as her!
Probally my second favorite DLC fighter after Banjo & Kazooie.
@nhSnork thanks, that picture is funny x)
I hope they show off a lot of what they can do.
So happy that they are releasing earlier into March, my most wanted series to be in the DLC and I cannot wait for their showcase!
@Expa0 what do you have against lloyd
@JohnnyC joke's on you, her eyes and overall face expressions have been the part to kept my eyes glued for most of my almost 200 hour experience with her in the party. And mind you, I'm a red-blooded straight perv myself.
@Snatcher to be fair, that "heavy" censorship just covered up enough skin for Smash's different age rating. 😄
I doubt they’ll drop them right after the presentation. They seldom do that, since a huge version update wipes replay data and they always give some kind of warning before that happens.
@nhSnork now that we have bayo zss skins 7 and 8, and pyra mythra this game should be rated T
Haven't bought any of the Smash DLC to date, but I'm tempted to snag Pyra/Mythra. We'll see.
@nhSnork Whether what you're saying is true or not (methinks he doth protest too much 😉) the fact is the game devs were clearly trying to draw attention to something. I'm not interested in getting a political/ethical/moral debate about the rights and wrongs of why they did that as frankly there's plenty of that on the internet already, but the facts speak for themselves.
Shovel Knight should get the premium Mii treatment, we haven't had a premium Mii swordfighter yet, and Bomberman shows that assist trophies are not off the table for such treatment.
@JohnnyC Fun fact, if I recall correctly the artist for XC2 also does adult content so nice character designs should come with the territory.
@Snatcher It takes a heavy misunderstanding of the concept combined with a heavy predisposition to overreact before having any information to call the character design "censorship".
Okay, so if this character gets two big personalities, how come Zero Suit Samus and Snake are still downgraded? Nobody is asking the important questions.
Even tho i wanted more xenoblade and not smash, i still ended up buying the 2nd pass because of this reveal (altho i still find it hypocritical how this is seemingly getting off lighter despite still being censorship)
Also I really like how half of the dlc characters have been JRPG characters from games that I've enjoyed lmao. I know it'll get some people mad, but i still hope one of the last 2 characters is another JRPG one
Hard to get excited for a character that’s only popular for obvious reasons.
@Sourcecode The aesthetics of the character aren't the main thing for me, it's how they play. Steve from Minecraft is dull as dishwater as a character, but introduced some fun new ways to play the game. I have no interest in this character, but the trailer suggested some interesting new mechanics/moves which is really all that matters. If it happens to be wrapped up in a character like Banzo Kazooie or Bayonetta when they were announced, that's a nice bonus.
@thesilverbrick Banjo and Terry both released on the same day as their showcases
Very excited for this. Big fan of both Xeno games and while I'd say the original edges out the second a smidge I still have a lot of love for it. I was hoping if they got reps they'd do away with Rex and do something like this, not out of any ire, I like Rex well enough I just feel Pyra is more of the emotional core of the game, she has a more interesting arc.
Not intending on dropping Ridley anytime soon but if they are fun I could see them being a nice secondary they were on my rather extensive list of characters I didn't think would make it in but that I'd love to see.
Well, I have to set my alarm for 6:45am next week. SOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!
Meh. Poor choice in my opinion but hey, good for Xenoblade fans
i haven't really watched any of the DLC presentations, but who am i to complain, my most wanted character is already in! I hope we see some cool new mii outfits
@Sourcecode I think you'll find that most fans of the character are fans of just that, the character.
Don't get me wrong Xenoblade (both games) have problems with weirdly sexualised characters and odd fanservice scenes in strange places and I completely get it if that puts people off, I'd never judge someone for feeling uncomfortable as a result, that's why I initially hesitated when XC2 came out. However you'll find that if you give them the time they are both genuinely interesting and well rounded protagonists.
@PikaPhantom Yes, and in Terry’s case we got a warning tweet from Nintendo a week beforehand warning that replay data would soon be erased. Banjo is the only character to release so far without a patch balancing or affecting any other characters, so his drop didn’t erase replays. I’m saying they won’t release Pyra/Mythra without such a warning, assuming they come with a balance patch, which every character but Banjo has up to this point.
@JimmySpades so taking away an aspect of something from the original source that would make you raise the age rating doesn't fall under the definition of censorship? I guess I don't know what does then.
Interesting, but I'll have to see how the character plays, to decide on purchasing. I'm not a Xenoblade fan, so I'll have to see.
Once the final character(s) is/are released, Nintendo won't have Ultimate to talk about. That is, unless up front, or down the road, they surprise announce another Fighter Pass. I think part of the reason they pad out the dlc, assuming they already know, and have made their decisions in advance, is to keep the current version of Smash "current"; still in the gaming news, still an attention drawer like, "Hey! Look at this game we are still supporting."
I'm of the opinion Nintendo should release the final characters together during their E3 Direct; especially if the presentation only announces the characters, and saves the in-depth tutorials for later. Of course, Nintendo has no reason to do that. An in-depth tutorial would not fill up Nintendo's 3 days worth of E3 Treehouse presentations, and I imagine Nintendo wants to finish off the Fighter Pass in the early Fall, or close to Smash Ultimate's 3 year anniversary. Doing so stretches out focus on Ultimate.
@Tobiaku They actually have several character "guest" artists which is why so many blades have such drastically different art designs..but yes I believe one or two of the artists have also done adult manga (lol if wasnt obvious by some of the blade designs)
@mr_somewhere huh? what was sexualized about the first Xenoblade? I don’t remember anything like that
Cool, wasn't expecting it this soon. Super excited to check out Pyra/Mythra when they release.
@JimmySpades It is tho.
@nhSnork Ya they even gave them pants.
Ok When I said heavy censorship I was binge a little over the top, I didn't mean heavy I just meant censorship, sorry for the misunderstanding.
@fafonio Most of Sharla's outfits are embarrassing. Same with the final character that joins the party, not all of them mind, it's a weird choice too given their situation. Very happy they introduced the ability to mix and match appearances in the re-release. To it's credit as far as I remember it's only relegated to outfits.
There's no reason for these things to be as long as they are. How about instead put tutorials in the game?
@mr_somewhere Ohhh I now remember that the outfits changed depending on the armor you selected. Awesome game. You're right, but those were changes that I didn't mind being "sexualized" as they are all, as you say, just optional outfits.
.....Yeah, no thanks....sighs
I'll just wait for the next character so I can be disappointed with that one, too.
@fafonio Yeah it's not a serious issue at all like you said it's fortunately optional. I was particularly happy with that armour feature solely for the fact that in the older versions some of my party members were walking monstrosities.
@mr_somewhere hahahaha that’s true .... I still have the Switch Remaster sitting. So, now you can choose how they look as you’re getting the equipment? That’s neat!
I only played the 3DS version but that it’s a great feature then.
Xenoblade 2 might be weeb trash but the OST is one of the best soundtracks of any game I've ever played. It's an absolute win for the music alone.
Bowser; Jr you are to young to look at that candy uhh hentai, uhhh ....P- HUB. Uhhh never mind, gonna kidnapp her instead of peach.
No rest for our Sakurai eh.
