Re: Poll: Hasn't Nintendo Always Been An 'Entertainment' Company?

MajorTom

@Olrun In Japan are also cafés and pubs based on many other mangas/ animes, mascots and games. Dragon Quest even has its own island theme park for example and Monster Hunter has a section in Universal Japan before Mario did. It does not really mean that Nintendo is more than its games for that matter.

Re: Review: Digimon World: Next Order - A Repetitive, Open-World Grind For Die-Hard Fans Only

MajorTom

@Xansies Without the glaring problems it likely will be the best Pokémon since black and white, true. Still that also is not exactly that high of an achievement in my opinion. Most other RPGs evolved far more than Pokémon has done in that time-span. Even without all those giant performance issues are most of the shops just basic menus and mainly consist of a sandwich shop or clothes shop. I am not sure what I would rate the game myself, since I did not play it but I also saw enough footage of it to know that it won't be worth my time.

Still my point mainly was that it should not be rated a 7 with all its issues when they judge Sonic Frontiers and this far more harshly (and far more other games if they are niche or are originally a franchise from a competitor). Sonic Frontiers surely does not deserve the 4, if Scarlet and Violet are a 7.

@KaiserGX Yep same, I also come a lot less often to this site nowadays. I like having the news about upcoming games and stuff on one place, but there so many of those random articles in between for some time now.

You certainly are also right about the reviewer not seeming to know what kind of game they are actually reviewing. Some reviews seem more like personal preferences than actual reviews. I still remember that Silver Case review getting a 3, because the reviewer did not like the art-style and considered the characters unlikeable.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest Treasures - A Trove Of JRPG Goodness, Perfect For Beginners

MajorTom

I don't see how any of those cons are really cons? The dual protagonists sounds more like a very personal opinion and Dragon Quest always was kid-friendly. The harder draconian mode in XI was even released as an extra in the localisation. I wonder why Pokémon never got those kind of cons and still got high ratings considering scarlet and violet are only 1 point lower, but that shows the bias of the reviews on this site in general.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Surpass 10 Million Sales In First Three Days, Setting New Nintendo Record

MajorTom

@FirstEmperor I don't really see anyone shaming you in the first place. The sheeple remark of SonOfDracula seemed more like a general statement about a group of fans who just buy anything that they yearly churn out and deny all of the flaws of the series. It was not about every costumer. If you consider that a personal attack then that is more on you.

I myself would like the series to improve, but I expect this won't happen with the current numbers. For that example with Mario Kart you know for sure there will eventually come a next instalment that will more than likely be as good or maybe even better than the previous one. For Pokémon you know that they will release 1 or even more games a year with likely as much or even less quality or in a very special case "a step in the right direction". I also don't think that anyone on both sides really thinks it can fail. Even when it sells less than normal it outsells almost every franchise on the system.
Since the series is also the biggest multimedia franchise of the world it will have more fans and exposure in general so you will also see more "whining" about it.

I occasionally comment about it, but that is more often as a response. However I got past the point to really care that much. Most Pokémon games are below my standards, so I skip them. I hope they will improve enough to get a game near the levels of Dragon Quest XI S or other RPGs, but I don't expect that in the near future.

@Jeronan I also played CP2077 on day one myself on the PC. I also enjoyed it and did not have that many issues myself. Only some bugs here and there. Really liked the feel and world of the game. I heard most problems were on last gen systems. I also consider the outcry that CD Project Red got a bit overboard. However it did help improving the game and the view on it. Right now most people consider it a good finished game as far as I know which is deserved.
Hope the same outcry will come to Pokémon, but I sadly doubt it.

Re: Bayonetta's OG Voice Actor Asks Fans To "Boycott" Third Game After PlatinumGames Wage Fallout

MajorTom

@Kienda I don't think those 450 million are profits and even high for actually the income of the games. Every Bayonetta struggled to get even 2 million sales. If we consider those 2 million per game are full priced for $60 I doubt that they can get to 450 million dollar for profits alone. With this I don't even take the sales and discounts of the games in consideration.

Re: Nintendo Reiterates That Splatoon 3's 'Salmon Run' Mode Will Be Available 24/7

MajorTom

As someone who loves Splatoon I never understood the time-gated content. The maps and ranked modes still seem to rotate every 2 hours. I think there should just be some vote system like Mario Kart 8 or any other game. I also don't understand why turf-war is the only unranked mode outside of private battles. Every mode should have a unranked option if you ask me.

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Series Would Work Best As A Free-To-Play Game?

MajorTom

@sanderev Most subscription / expansion based games also have a F2P model don't they? Pretty sure FF 14 has a rather generous free trial. World of Warcraft has their first 20(? I think) levels for free, Runescape has a part of the map for free while having the whole map and more skills available with the subscription etc. The subscription and expansion model pretty much was the first profitable F2P model that started it all.

Re: Talking Point: Has Nintendo Done Enough To Justify Splatoon 3's Existence?

MajorTom

I am fine with the changes and will likely get it day 1 since Splatoon is one of my favorite Nintendo franchises. However I was hoping for some more new modes. The tricolor turf war looks very fun, but if it will only be playable during splat fests it seems like wasted potential. Once there will be no splat fests anymore then the mode will almost be unplayable. I also miss the night stages in 2 which they should have added to random matches after the splat fests ended. The card game does not do much for me. I don't play Splatoon for the minigames.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Trailer Unveils Region Name And New Mechanics

MajorTom

Looks better than I expected it to be. I am still concerned about the world though. Hope it will not just be some open fields to explore and actually have many points of interest and secrets to discover.
Am not the biggest fan of the crystal Pokémon yet. Would like that they actually stay with a certain gimmick that they flesh out in the upcoming games instead of a new one each time.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

MajorTom

@Silly_G The original Monster Hunter Rise is the same price second hand as the base game of Sword/Shield here, so I would say that they keep the same value. Maybe later in time that will change, but that is just conjecture. I guess the only difference at the moment is the combi pack being full on the cartridge for Pokémon, but I don't consider that 30 euro extra myself in this age where games get many bug fixes and updates after release as downloads regardless.

I actually went for the Steam version of Sunbreak myself since I prefer my download games on PC if I got the chance so I get your point. The Switch certainly does not have the best Online structure, even though most games for it depend on it.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

MajorTom

@Silly_G Capcom also released a combi pack of the base game with the dlc for a more standard price of 60-70 euro (depends on where you buy it of course). Not sure what the price is in Australia since I don't live there. They did the same with World Iceborn which also had its own release in combination with it just being dlc for older players.
Edit: Also it is far less expensive than the combi pack for Pokémon Sword + DLC here which costs 90 euro.

Re: Nintendo Direct Mini To Air Tomorrow, June 28

MajorTom

@KindofaBigDeal Well you just gave a source. The editor of that Spanish Gaming Magazine is a source, not a leaker. They get the intel often under oath, since they are meant to write about the directs. This one hinted on some of the intel he got during a live stream he did about a plague tale, No Mans Sky and FromSoftware titles (so not even about a direct). It was probably in the spur of the moment during the stream that he slipped his info. Hope it won't give him big consequences since it is not that long before the direct itself.
