Splatoon 3 is just around the corner - no really, literally just around the corner, as in next Friday - and Nintendo has reconfirmed something pretty cool that you may have missed first time around.
That's right, it's been reiterated that Splatoon 3's 'Salmon Run' mode will be available 24/7, so if you're lying in bed at 3am wishing you could knock out a few Salmon Run matches, you can be safe in the knowledge that'll it'll be available at whatever time you see fit.
Check out the confirmation below:
It's certainly a step up from Splatoon 2, which scheduled the Salmon Run mode at set times; granted, these were pretty generous, and chances are you'd land on a match at most times of the day, but we're not going to say no to 24 hour access!
We recently went hands-on with Splatoon 3 (as did everyone else, if you took part in the Splatfest Premiere) and came back relatively impressed, though we acknowledged that the game is more of an evolutionary step up than a straight-up revolution.
Will you be checking out Splatoon 3's Salmon Run mode? Head on down to the comments below and let us know!

Awesome. Heard about this before but hearing it confirmed once more is nice, I very much loved Salmon Run in Splatoon 2 and I can't wait to play it in Splatoon 3.
Bring on next week Friday!!
Wish it was in 2 but better late than never I guess 😁.
Only played Splatoon, skipped 2, so looking forward to this.
1 week feels like a 1 year away. Gimme!! 🦑
I didn't really mind the limited windows in Splatoon 2 and managed to jump in every single session of it for months when the game came out but this is probably for the better. Can't complain with more Salmon Run, very fun mode.
@rjejr That's the best way to go to this game. You will enjoy it for sure!
The whole 'available at select times' thing with Salmon Run in 2 never really bothered me per se, but having it be available all the time is just flat out better so I'm not complaining. My only hope left now is that there'll be a wider variety of rewards for completing jobs since, once you play it enough in 2, you kinda just get the same stuff over and over again. Not a deal breaker though and this mode is beloved for a reason, can't wait to play it again!
I know I'm in the minority here, but I kind of enjoyed the limited availability aspect of Salmon Run. It felt more special to play. I'm sure the pre-set weapons will still be on rotation.
Plus, I feel like the introduction of Big Run still captures that feeling, so it balances out. I'm hoping that Big Run is basically Splatfest for those who don't play as much Turf War as they do Salmon Run
I'm more excited about salmon run rather than the main multiplayer game mode. The single player is still my main reason to buy the game though.
Those salmonoids can't run from my busy schedule now! Wahahaha!
Why was it ever limited to begin with.
I love QOL changes like this and skipping the news. Salmon Run is an amazing mode that seriously helped me to get better playing Splatoon and it’s the best way to make money in the game. No doubt I’ll be playing it even more than ever.
Nintendo’s still been very quiet about Salmon Run in this game. So far as I know, they haven’t even shown more stages besides Sockeye Station. I know there’s more Boss Salmonids than what we know because I had to avoid almost spoiling one on YouTube. There might even be more King Salmonids than just Cohozuna!
I'll go against the grain here — the limited times for Salmon Run ruined the mode for me, personally, and I played it a few times but because it was unreliable to be there when I felt like playing Splatoon 2, I never really bothered with it. There was no reason to keep it limited the way it was and to take a whole mode away from the game at certain times confuses me even today.
Can you play 2 play couch co-op in this mode? Or is it exclusively online co-op?
@Axecon Wow, is there any way at all to play couch coop in Splatoon 3?? First news!
@Axecon Unfortunately, no. It's one player per console.
Splatoon 3's eshop page details:
https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/splatoon-3-switch/
@Axecon I don’t think there’s gonna be couch co op sadly
Would be amazing tho
Nintendo really needs to figure out how to do cross couch/online co-op. Especially for its flagpole online titles like Smash & Splatoon.
"Wow... what an amazing innovation. Thanks Nintendo, here'a 60 bucks so I can play the same game!"
hopefully the terrible idea of only 8 of the maps a month for each ranked mode is gone too.
@Dev9417 however many more stages release sometime later. pretty sure they said 3 king salmons(for now?), have to look up for confirmation. new once a month "mode" where they infiltrate the city/regular multi-player maps.
I seem to recall someone working on Splatoon 2 making the argument of essentially "we know how to better design a game than the consumer, that's why we don't make salmon run available 24/7" so seeing them walk back on that is kind of hilarious.
Have they confirmed if you still won't be able to bring in your own gear for Salmon Run???? I couldn't deal with the randomized weapons in the previous Salmon Run.
Will definitely be firing up salmon run as soon as humanly possible
@Chocobo_Shepherd why would they change that? It's a huge part of what makes the mode effective
Only took Nintendo like 7 years to realise that people want a mode they can play 24/7, and not via a weird time schedule.
Yeah, but the 24th of July of what year??
Still not convinced this game would be worth for its single player only since I don’t play online games.
I always thought that was lame af. why restrict a part of the game in S2? So when the servers are down you will not be able to play that mode again? wtf
I look forward to being able to jump into salmon run whenever I want now. I really hope one day we can get local split screen coop especially since the switch still doesn’t have a good party system online.
@Desrever Same here. The limited nature made it more like planned gaming and special events. I’d plan to be there and that limited access felt special. Though it makes complete sense that they’d open it up since not everyone could participate.
@Crockin @Chocobo_Shepherd at least in local wireless play you can bring in your own gear. I don’t know about online. For months my family couldn’t get past all three waves and then somehow or another we figured it out that you can actually choose your weapons. I don’t even know how to make it random anymore.
Really odd decision from Nintendo. Personally I'm super happy about it, but this hasn't really been a very visible request, especially in Japan, and they used the schedule to ensure que times were low for Turf war at low volume times while also keeping SR que times low by having everyone play in clusters. So they are giving up a lot for not a ton of good will.
I guess sales projections tied with the unified server approach have them thinking this wont be an issue.
@Eddyson Either you're baiting or you're just flat out dumb.
@NCChris Just a healthy dose of sarcasm. They gave us a problem in Splatoon 2(the limited accesible salmon run), and now they're selling the solution in Splatoon 3. Yeah no thank you.
Finally, like it should have always been.
Can they confirm that the card game uses in-game currency and not microtransactions already so my mind can be at ease.
I might just get it then. I dislike competitive games, but I enjoy horde modes.
@HeadPirate interesting reasonings, i always figured it was to prevent ability chunk farming. theyre especially at risk of all the mode's player bases being split up now that we have Pro and Open rank modes too. hopefully those also wont be an issue
@AlexanderDaniels Wait, I need to know what reasoning makes you think this, now I’m worried.
Never cared for Salmon Run anyway but good for those that enjoy it I guess. It just didn't do much if anything for me at all personally.
....This game might be a maybe for me...I got bored of the first game after a while...and the sequel just looked like 1.5 or something to me. I was interested in Salmon Run, but not being able to play it whenever I want just made me not care about the game completely. So, yeah...we'll see with this one.
@Eddyson For once I'm happy to be wrong.
As someone who loves Splatoon I never understood the time-gated content. The maps and ranked modes still seem to rotate every 2 hours. I think there should just be some vote system like Mario Kart 8 or any other game. I also don't understand why turf-war is the only unranked mode outside of private battles. Every mode should have a unranked option if you ask me.
S2 reset your rank points if you didn't get a new rank before the shift closed, hopefully no more of that either.
Yes, but will you be able to play with two friends without having to wait 45 minutes?
EDIT: I mean in Turf Wars. In Salmon Run you could actually make a room, join up with friend and then open for randoms to fill up the room.
The whole point of Salmon Run being available at limited times was that since the rewards were power-ups, it was a way of keeping balance.
So, either the rewards will be much more tame or it would make it unbalanced.
