@Tuulenpoika theres nothing wrong with actively favoring censorship... the hypocrisy on this site is palpable
this kind of change makes me want to buy it more, not less... obviously there were business reasons for these decisions.
I also think people need to remember the times not too long ago that changes were made to games and no one ever knew about it for years... fact of the matter is, all those features were japanese features... and these features are NA localized features... no one knew any the wiser and life was fine. What's the diff? Whats the big deal? Let companies run how they want to run. Play games. have fun. get over it. the end. Love life.
I was specifically referring to that patent where the controller had a card slot built in... and of course it COULD make sense for a console to have physical media and a hand held to only be download... who knows if they would do that though ... but that's not what I was talking about either haha
@Kirk I have used it... I've been to E3... There is no practical use for VR STILL... its all impractical and expensive... its just not a good idea in it's "wear a headset be isolated from the world" form. maybe one day it will be a good idea... but not in this form. I'm speaking from nintendo's perspective as well.. for them... It is a terrible business idea... something like holo-lense is a far better idea... as far as VR goes... until someone makes anything worth playing It will never catch on.
Sure VR as a technology is a cool idea... VR as a game doesnt work still... It's not fun... it's just... NIFTY
900p does not fall in line with the "Industry leading chips" rumor... 900p is bare minimum what this machine should do. industry leading chips could handle mush higher than 900p.
The only thing I can think of is if both console and handheld have the same resolution... it would be a great way to cut resolution without losing too much... so the handheld doesnt have to render as many pixels... its a nice compromise so that both units could run the same resolution...
However that really doesnt matter... and I fully expect the handheld unit to be no more than a 720p 4" screen... maybe even less... like the 540p that the vita does.
I suppose there would be development benefits to having both units able to run games at the same resolution... but only if the power is the same... it seems either way you'll have to make different assets for a portable version of a game anyway... so screen resolution could be different so long as its the same aspect ratio.
from what I can understand that attachment adds cloud storage to your console and also cloud computing power NOT ONLY THAT but you have the option of sharing that cloud computing when you aren't using it WITH EVERYONE so essentially... the more people that buy these attachments the more storage and processing power the nintendo network will have so its a scalable server structure that pays for itself I dont want to go overboard ... but it could also mean that the capabilities of the NX at the beginning of it's life could be multiplied by a number by the end of it's life (IF IT EVER DIES) they've solved server maintenance costs...... by basically letting everyone else supply their own server... And since they'll be manufacturing and selling these devices MOST LIKELY at a profit... they'll make money AND have a network capable of next gen cloud computing.... OH AND that image Looks like it's an INCENTIVES program for SHARING your extra processing power with others... theoretically ... you could earn points or discounts or downloads or something the more time you give of your device
The difference is I really think nintendo intends to release games when they say they will... and end up post poning for various develoment and sales strategy reasons... Other companies I think just blow dates out of their butts and then blast past them...

One handheld, one console, one OS

"The exact shape of the NX hardware isn’t yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors."
a console and at least one mobile unit... that's 2 separate devices... in the same breath that mentions these industry leading chips. I cant see how anyone can take this quote and make it into one unit. Unless there's a different quote I'm missing?
Please enlighten me if I am.
by the way I don't consider a console with a controller that is actually a handheld to be a hybrid... that's still 2 separate devices... a hybrid would only be a handheld that can output to a TV which I think is a bad Idea...
I could see new zelda on both... but TP sold 7 million on wii and 1.5 on GameCube... Wii Version is most successful without the help of it's GameCube counterpart
@Xenocity I agree they need to gain a fanbase and quickly... and price could affect that for sure... But I still stand by the perceived value must be high for anyone to buy it. 20 million PS4's sold on hype alone because despite the $400 price tag... the console was perceived as the most powerful, fastest, fully featured, out of all the 3 (even though it had very little going for it software wise for months). Consumers don't mind spending money if they get their money's worth.
With that being said I do agree that Nintendo tries to aim for the best value for price. They always try to make it affordable, and I would love it if it was priced at $299 or lower. $300-$400 is the sweet spot for consoles right now and I dont think there is a reason that Nintendo couldnt launch a decent spec'd console with a cool new hook at a price high enough for them to make a profit. SO LONG as it is valuable enough to the consumer.
@Xenocity
I dont think it's a matter of price... but a matter of value... a new NX would sell just fine at $400 if it had a perceived value..
Wii U never felt like a good value at $350 especially compared to PS4 at $400
so many features were missing from wii U (and still are) and that really makes it feel not as valuable as a PS4.
@russellohh wonderful 101, Hyrule warriors, Affordable space adventures, Mario Maker (you'd be doing yourself a disservice lumping this with all other mario games... its a vastly different experience), Sonic Lost world, Monster hunter 3 ULTIMATE, Wolly world, Captain Toad, Runbow, NES remixes... all these are fun and worth a try..
Your argument does not stand... there are many games out there that aren't mario If you're not into them that;s fine but they are there... Also if you're like me and didnt get to play mass effect, darksiders II, assassins creeds, on 360 or ps3 All those are available on wii U as well... also splinter cell was fantastic... not exclusive but still offered on the wii U for those of us who only ... or mainly gamed on Wii for a whole generation. Tekken tag 2 is even on wii U.
@bloodycelt Yep iphones currently use ARMv8-A dual-core chips designed by apple themselves and a PowerVR gpu to go with it...
I would probably have to disagree somewhat with your statement about architecture though... Its the fact that apple uses the same chips in all their products that allows them to make one OS that spans all devices ... they really dont have a lot to change to make it run on all devices either... If nintendo had say PPC and ARM as their two main processors for console and home... (which is what they have now already) they would have to make 2 separate OS's that function as one... it's just a lot simpler on their end and for developers if they had the same architecture on all hardware configurations. One OS, and all games function across all devices. (give or take some unique features ... also I believe having those pieces of hardware communicate with each other would also be simpler. Its basically like having the same exact device twice ... (of course ... a handheld would probably have less ram and other such limitations... so it's more like same hardware, lesser specs basically)
@PaperMario64 the title is misleading... it states in the actual report that there is both console and portable devices... that work on the same platform of the NXOS...

Re: Intriguing Nintendo Patent Points to 'Supplemental Computing Device' and Cloud Resources for a Gaming System
from what I can understand
that attachment adds cloud storage to your console and also cloud computing power
NOT ONLY THAT
but you have the option of sharing that cloud computing when you aren't using it
WITH EVERYONE
so essentially... the more people that buy these attachments the more storage and processing power the nintendo network will have
so its a scalable server structure that pays for itself
I dont want to go overboard ... but it could also mean that the capabilities of the NX at the beginning of it's life could be multiplied by a number by the end of it's life
(IF IT EVER DIES)
they've solved server maintenance costs...... by basically letting everyone else supply their own server... And since they'll be manufacturing and selling these devices MOST LIKELY at a profit... they'll make money AND have a network capable of next gen cloud computing....
