At Nintendo Life we know how tricky it can be to keep up with all the happenings that go on in a week, so once again we've compiled the cream of the crop for your entertainment.
This week we focus on the recent Nintendo NX rumours that suggest the system may be a fusion of a home console and a handheld, eShop listing leaks, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes demo code distribution, and the usual releases and reviews roundup.
Why aren't you subscribed to our YouTube channel yet? You are? Oops, that's embarrassing on our part.

Actually hoping the rumours are true, for once - a high-powered hybrid console. Impatient to discover whatever changes are coming to the NNID too, if any. Details stored in the cloud and not tied to specific consoles, please, and a decent Club Nintendo successor. A long time since we've had any free game promotions, too. One for the New Year, maybe? And a Direct? I can dream, can't I?
We really need a Nintendo Direct to address all of these rumors and leaks Twilight Princess HD and all of these Virtual Console games are present in the eShop NOW in some capacity, so I'd think that something would be coming soon. We also have people claiming to know the next Smash Bros. fighter, which is apparently going to be revealed by the end of this month. I'm sure there's plenty I missed as well. The only thing we can really do it hope for the best, as always.
Nintendo NEVER mentionned an hybrid. In fact, they even DEBUNKED it and said that it would different device. The rumor went the same way. Both device will have the same operating system and chipset architecture. Is "same chipset architecture" really trip you off? Yes? OK. You have two PCs. First, we have a Intel Core i7 4th generation CPU, 16GB of memory and an nVidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card. Second, we have a Intel Pentium 4th-Generation CPU, 4GB of memory and an nVidia GeForce GTX 640 graphics card. Both uses the same motherboard, same Optical drive... See what I mean. So, it's easy to port to one to another. It's exactly what Nintendo meant. There was never an hybrid device.
So if the rumors are true, Ninty didn't learn their lesson with Wii U?
as long as Nintendo makes a system where i can play their awesometacularly fun games i honestly am not concerned about much just waiting to be surprised when they officially announce it
The rumour was always AMD chipset now Intel? Or is that just an example
I am looking forward too seeing how Nintendo deals with the multiple devices and the way they interact.
As long as I never have to hear the phrase "asymmetrical gameplay" again, I'm sure I'll like the NX.
As always, just wait until it's official. Done!
Nope, I won't believe the hybrid thing until Nintendo says something. In my opinion NX is their next handheld that launches in 2017.You people are crazy,I remember all the Wii U rumors that turned out not true!
@Lebon14 Yup. NX = ecosystem. One NX device is a handheld, one is a console. There's a shared OS, dev tools, services, and game library, with the same or similar architecture. A true hybrid is not happening.
I guess hybrid needs definition. I'd be happy with something like a 3DS, but with TV out. Perhaps also the possibility to plug into a base unit to use as a controller. A cloud-based account system would be great. And no region lock. But, we'll have to wait and see.
The hybrid idea could be a win-win if handled right.
Nintendo has no rivals when it comes to handhelds; add the portable appeal to the first-party franchises boasted by Nintendo, and you already have two selling points. However, Nintendo needs to hurry up in that field - the PlayStation Vita, as bad as its sales are, pretty much is a portable PS3 in terms of sheer power. Thankfully for Ninty, Sony never quite realized this potential in the Vita, focusing mainly on its home console (PS3 during the Vita's early days, then PS4) instead - only to blame it later on a "not healthy climate for dedicated handheld games consoles", as Shuhei Yoshida said lately.
So none of those leaked eshop games were for 3DS? The Wii U VC is blowing up but I've played many of those GBA/DS games already.
Nintendo should probably hire new plumbers, far too many leaks in one year.
"If you've got enough chums locally you'll be able to play it unshackled through wireless communication"
How is being restricted to one level "unshackled"?
@Iggly or maybe they are the leaks they let out on purpose, and on a side note its kinda hard to always be on guard from data miners since its what they do.
@3MonthBeef its possible if they can squeeze in the technology and figure out how to manipulate the game into a different format from disk to chip without changing anything.
@IceClimbers I'm not sure if the NX is the actual ecosystem, they mentioned hardware specifically. NX is probably one device, but part of an ecosystem.
This may be good.
@edgedino I doubt they purposely let people leak their stuff, especially last year's leak about someone revealing the final roster in Smash 4.
Whatever it is chances are i will be getting it asap
I still assume the NX is a gamepad with Wii U internals that is portable, has a DS/3DS card slot and an SD card slot for storing games away from a base unit, which is a gamepad receiver that plugs into your external hard drive and your TV via the 5.2ghz frequency transmitter.
This would allow for multiplayer between 3DS/2DS devices on the go or at home/ over internet. It will also allow for Wii U games to include multiple game pad support (as the processing can be done also by NX to alleviate any power failing) such as Star Fox (multiplayer) and Splatoon (multiplayer split screen added).
This is in line with NX becoming a third gaming device that links the 3DS and Wii U libraries. Going forward Nintendo can then re-iterate the NX instead of being tied to separate home console and handheld devices, streamlining the business within a 5 year cycle and making development reliant on a single platform, not divided into 2 as it currently is (an part of the reason Nintendo cannot keep up on their own).
The new Account system merely collates your download purchases (which are clearly stated in your account already and have been ever since wii), which the NX will be able to access and download, and as it uses Wii U internals will run every emulated game Nintendo has so far released.
NX will likely mark the launch of GC on VC too, albeit a generation too late.
Nintendo has always claimed it uses Powerful chips, because it Does, it's just their definition of power is measured to a low wattage, the Wii U uses a fraction of the power of PS3/360 and PS4/X1, and achieves PS3/360 fidelity graphics. If you put 4 Wii U's together (which would use the same power as a PS4) it would likely rival both Sony an Microsoft systems (twelve cores, 8 gig Ram, 128 meg fast ram). Most people don't see power that way, they want sheer grunt, which has little to do with power. Bruce lee was powerful compared to similar sized men (an some bigger), that is Nintendo's definition of powerful.
@Lebon14
I second this.
One handheld, one console, one OS
Didnt the actual report this rumor stems from say there was litterally a hand held and console?... I'm gonna try and find it...
edit: from the wall street journal"
"The exact shape of the NX hardware isn’t yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors."
a console and at least one mobile unit... that's 2 separate devices... in the same breath that mentions these industry leading chips. I cant see how anyone can take this quote and make it into one unit. Unless there's a different quote I'm missing?
Please enlighten me if I am.
by the way I don't consider a console with a controller that is actually a handheld to be a hybrid... that's still 2 separate devices... a hybrid would only be a handheld that can output to a TV which I think is a bad Idea...
@Maggots " Would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction"
Conjunction could easily mean that the NX could be a portable device that's around the power of the WiiU, which could be plugged into a base unit for a power boost to current gen specs... that would be the "very" definition of a hybrid.
I certainly hope this isn't the case & that Nintendo have a new handheld and console lineup which will have enough spec peccs to quieten doubters. Though I personally wonder what Nintendo would do with current gen power - most of their first party games already put PS4 & XBone games to shame. Wondering if all it would do is increase the space between first party titles die to the increased development time. :/
