Re: Early NPD Figures Suggest Nintendo Outperformed The Competition In January

Lysis

This article overlooks a key factor when comparing January 2018 to January 2019.

January 2018 included five weeks of tracking, versus four weeks of tracking for January 2019.

From the Resetera Thread, here are the weekly averages compared:

2018

NSW 275K
PS4 254K
XB1 235K

2019

NSW 284k (+3%)
PS4 195k (-23%)
XB1 101k (-57%)

Last January was 5 weeks, this January is 4 weeks.

Weekly averages are

2018

NSW 55k
PS4 51k
XB1 47K

2019
NSW 71k (+29%)
PS4 49k (-4%)
XB1 25K (-47%)

Re: Nintendo President Aims for 20 Million Switch Units To Be Shipped Next Year

Lysis

Add me to the list of those who think 20 million is a conservative number. Now that they have upped manufacturing, they shouldn’t have a problem keeping up supply post-holiday. Any new games add to a software lineup that is already moving hardware as it is. Plenty of franchises and Wii U ports to go, and third party support is actually materializing. From my perspective, a 20 million target makes Pokemon and/or price cut seem less likely, unless Nintendo is intentionally lowballing their target for the year.

@gatorboi352 The only standard that matters is those of its consumers. While you continue to have imaginary debates in your mind about Nintendo being held accountable for marketing it as the successor to the Wii U instead of as a portable, consumers are enjoying it in the way that they see fit, proving its effectiveness as a hybrid device. Some use it only as a portable, some use it only docked (that's me), and some use it both ways. That versatility is at the core of its appeal, and constructing straw men isn't going to change that.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Switch sales this week are obviously a stock issue. They rushed out additional units to take advantage of Golden Week and stock is depleted. They are apparently able to push out 45k or so a week, and the last three weeks still average out to that.

Same thing in NA, where they only had 280k units to sell, with 700k intended for April being rush shipped by plane to be there before the end of March.

The Switch is still sold out everywhere in U.S. and Japan. No idea about your special sliver of Ireland, but the rest of the world is buying whatever Nintendo can get on to shelves.

Re: Early Stock Market Activity Suggests Switch Could Be A Bigger Hit Than The Wii

@PlywoodStick Best Buy got their restock this week and they are holding units for the Sunday ad.

I tried to buy a Switch on the shelf this past Tuesday, and they said it was out by mistake.

Now, this was a big Best Buy in Brooklyn, and they said they got 14 units, so I suspect whatever Best Buy puts out for sale on Sunday will be gone on Sunday!

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

Lysis

I've put 105 hours into my Switch playing only Zelda - got both the system and game on launch day.

I had pre-ordered 1-2 Switch and was reconsidering it after the reviews, but picked it up in the end. I still haven't played it, but my 20 year old son keeps borrowing the Switch to play it with his friends. I wouldn't have believed it if you told me that would happen, and I've annoyingly lost some Zelda time because son comes before dad!

Anyway, today is the first day I saw a Switch in the wild. I was going to pick it up on behalf of a parent from my school who has been looking for one for weeks, but when I called her, she said she found one yesterday. So I picked up one to raffle off, and my students are wigging out.

The lady at Wal-Mart said her entire day, every day, is answering the phone and saying the Switch is out of stock.

I think the signs for long-term success are good, but we'll see!
