@Jmaster "Really? That's your logic? Of course every console is going to improve on its predecessor, but that doesn't make it overall better! It has to actually be a big improvement over the previous one, otherwise they could launch a new console every week and clock the processor one hertz higher every time, and it'd still be 'the best Nintendo console ever' by your logic."
My logic is pretty sound, even what we consider to be simple upgrades does make it a better console than nintendo's last generation console. The upgrade to HD, a better eshop, and touchscreen controller, better wireless and an awesome pro controller are some of the few. However, I did not say that nintendo made the perfect console. In fact, it's faaaaaaaaaaar from perfect. It is lacking in major ways, the more stand out ones being the two that I mentioned. The biggest cry here is the lack of games, if it had better third party support, that would solve most of our issues. I notice that you and I both gave it a C rating, so we should be on the same page.
Reading the comments here, I'm a bit shocked and I wonder why there's so much complaining. There's a great thing that we all have called "choice". I choose to buy a game system which has the games that i like to play, which in this case happens to be the Wii U, since i mainly only play smash and kart. If you like other games, get a different console or PC instead of the Wii U. If you have the Wii U, then enjoy the games that you like most on it, it makes no sense to complain about the games that it lacks. If you no longer believe that it is a good value, then sell it and get something else, or give it away and get something else. Why all the emotions?
As a gamer from the late 80's early 90's I will agree with reggie only to the extend that the Wii U does have some excellent exclusives. What's kills the Wii U is the lack of AAA titles. The only reason I have the wii u is because i prefer nintendo games over the rest, I do not play much games anymore due to other priorities, and it is still the best family/party console IMO. However, even if i was still a heavy gamer (i was a heavy PC gamer back in the day), i would probably own a Wii U and a PC, as the PC has most of the multiplats and you can still play much older games from way back in the day. If you want the best bang for your buck go with the PC + Wii U bundle. PS4 and Xbox Ones are basically weak PCs. Also keyboard and mouse combo rules for FPS games
Agreed, although i still think that the adapter is a good option for those simply wanting to use their existing GC controllers with smash and save money at the same time, since 8 player smash will require 8 controllers. I have 3 GC controllers myself, however, i would much prefer a GC themed wii U pro controller, since i prefer wireless controllers.
"Some games require you to unplug the add-on controllers, a controller like the one on the petition would be as if it is hard-wired"
I don't see this in the petition, it reads: "This petition is to show interest in Nintendo creating a Wii U Pro controller in the style of the Gamecube's controller."
If you simply create a wii u pro controller with a different layout but use the exact same buttons and control sticks, I do not see how this would break compatibility with existing games.
Ok, i think I understand what you are saying, but you do realize that you can navigate with the wii u pro controller right? That's why i was saying that a GC themed wii u pro controller should be just fine, since the buttons and control sticks will just be placed a bit differently, but use the same logic board inside.
@OMC79 not sure what you are talking about with the pointing device... It shouldn't require a huge firmware update if it's simply a gamecube THEMED pro controller. I'm not talking about having to include the analog buttons or any of that, since those are not important to me.
AH ok, yes I agree. Perhaps a better option would have been to have a gamecube styled pro controller which could also work with a direct connection to the USB port to decrease any lag.
@Kirk I hear what you are saying, but for us to expect a 13 year old controller to continue to be used natively with nintendo's console in this generation is a bit unrealistic. I believe that nintendo understimated just how popular the GC controller is, and their thinking must be that, since most people use the controller for smash, that they would market it just for that one game at this time. Who's to say that the features that you are asking for will not be implemented in the future? I believe that is is highly likely that it will be compatible with more games in the future as it is only a matter of patching.
So again, i hear what you're saying, and i also wished that it worked with more things, but i do not think that our expectations are realistic at this time. Hopefully these things will come in the future.
@Kirk Good points, but really and truly, as with a lot of other things, it's all about preference. After i play smash with the pro controller, i will make my decision between that and the gamecube controller, but something tells me that the pro controller will feel just fine since i am comfortable with it with other games.
I believe that this exclusivity business is a bad start for the amiibos. It will definitely be more of a hinderance than anything else. Regardless, i only have interest at this time in link and toon link, maybe zero-suit samus in the future.
@Morph I wouldn't consider myself a gamecube elitist like other people, in fact i will probably play with the pro controller as my main controller since it is wireless. However, the gamecube controllers are cheaper and most people already have some in their possession. Pro controller are expensive at $50 a pop.
I must say, watching the video above with the new and retro track really shows you how far nintendo has come in terms of the quality of it's games. They have really mastered and remastered, the classics from back in the day with the new tracks and updated music. I have enjoyed the new DLC so far, the worst track in my opinion is yoshi's island (i think it's called), it has way to many turns, and not really anything to make it stand out.
I believe that nintendo definitely will. I believe that right now they are marketing it for smash since that is the main reason why most people want it right now. However, in the future, it would be in their best interest financially and logically, to patch in support for other games, ESPECIALLY nintendo 64 VC.
Even though no other game supports it right now, with smash wii u, you will be able to play with 8 of ANY controller including pro controller, wiimote, classic controller, and gamecube controllers. Also, you can mix and match them as well.
I wasn't going to at first, but i will definitely pick this up since I have 2 wired gamecube controllers already and one wave bird and smash supports 8 player smash! Also, even though they are not supporting it right now, i feel that nintendo will update it in the future so that it will support all wii-u vc games at the least, and perhaps other wii-u based games as well. I have no interest in wii mode since I am sure that nintendo will be bringing all n64 vc games to the wii u at some point.
@BensonUii I hear what your saying, get the people out in numbers so that the game could be displayed in public. But i think that a better approach would have been to release a demo in the eshop, so that more people could get the hands on feel, while simultaneously have tournaments as promotional events with the same demo, with prizes and give aways to draw people out.
Like i said on another article, the promotional events are fine, but the fact that they do not release the demo to the public is beyond me. That would probably go a long way in marketing the game.
I don't get it. All these "promotional events" and yet the best way to promote this game is with a demo! That way you get it into the hands of actual consumers who can show their friends and spread the word!
The control scheme of this game is what turns me off. I do not what to be forced to use pen and gamepad for all of my movements. The one on the Wii was more my kind of game.
@k8sMum This is actually not a big deal, as that does not seem to be too painful a process. The biggest problem which we all suffer from, is the fact that the save data is also tied to the console. Therefore, if your console dies, say goodbye to your save data, regardless of whether you have a disc or the digital version.
@MacMan Great! 12GB is more reasonable anyways. My advice though, based on past experience, if smash is more important to you than your other games, save it on the internal storage. I lost all my data/savedata with an external drive on the wii u last year, so I plan to keep my two top games, smash and kart, on the internal storage, and the rest can go on my external.
@Spakiness Thanks for rubbing it in I am not home right now to start the download. I thought it was 17.2GB though? so the night of the release we have to download the other 5.2GB?? That will take forever!
So guys, can the prepurchase be done directly from the eshop store, or do we have to get the download code from a retailer? I'm not home to check/test this for myself, and I will definitley be going digital.
I agree with the opinion that having the figurine tied to only one game with read/write capabilities will make the product confusing for customers if another game comes out with the capability. We know that the simple answer is to have specific data stored for each game that can be downloaded and uploaded at will, but again, this would have to be automated tremendously by nintendo if they expect the average customer not to be confused. However, nintendo seems to always be behind when it comes to save data. We can't even backup our wii-u save data, which has always been my number one complaint about the wii-u. Reguardless I'm still considering getting one as i would like to have team battles with my amiibo at my side, perhaps toonlink, link, or pikachu.
@ikki5 Thanks, I actually played it on a friend's 3ds. I was more impressed than i thought i would be with it. Unfortunately, I do not own a 3ds and have no intentions of buying one. I am only into home console gaming and would rather play smash with a gamecube or pro controller on the big screen in HD and with a great sound system

Re: Feature: The Wii U is Two Years Old, But How's it Doing?
It is by far the best nintendo console to date, of course since it improves with each generation. However main downfalls:
-lack of AAA third party games
-no option of exporting save data in the event of hardware failure
Because of these things i would have to give it a C

Re: Hands On: Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter
I like the pro controller, but the big A button on the GC controller makes it preferable for smash.
Re: Hands On: Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter

I think it will be yes. Amazon and gamestop have it as being available on Nov 21.
Re: Hands On: Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter

According to nintendo, you will be able to purchase the adapter separately for $19.99.

I think this has been shown before, but this would be a beautiful controller option for nintendo:
