It's hard to believe, but the first amiibo range — along with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U arrive this week in North America, on 21st November. The figure range is clearly a priority for Nintendo, with 29 confirmed toys already and details slowly emerging of how they'll work in a variety of games.
With release so close Nintendo of America is naturally pushing the toys and Smash Bros. through TV commercials and other advertising. In recent weeks we've had a quirky and lengthy amiibo advert showing off the concept in some detail, but the company has now published two snappy 30 second TV commercials. These are a lot more generic in nature, focusing on the toys and the ability to 'tap' them on the GamePad to use them in the Wii U brawler.
Check them out below and let us know what you think.

Rather good trailers though they missed the perfect opportunity to include Lonk as the Mii in Link racing suit on Mario Kart 8.
Guess Hyrule Warriors doesn't exist anymore.
@Dipper723 But more DLC was announced today.
@Dipper723 I'm pretty sure they left HW out because of its T rating and this commercial is clearly made to air on more family-friendly channels.
"ultimate sidekick" is a pertty good way to explain it, but these lame commercials just point out what's wrong w/ amiibo - after 3+ years of Skylanders kids expect more than that out of NFC toys. And really, Link's spinner weapon is about the best thing these do so far, so why waste the opportuinty to plug the greatness that is Hyrule Wariros?
I think the majority of amiibo sales never get played w/, they're just for show. Fitting.
Awful execution. The other ads are even more cringeworthy.
The visual effects at the beginning were nice even though that sequence lasted way too long, and at least they showed how many games are compatible with them, that was good.
It didn't even try to make a main point out of being able to take your customized fighter on the go.
@MrWalkieTalkie Family and children networks advertise PG-13 rated movies, so I don't see why they wouldn't advertise a T rated game.
At least America is getting adverts for the WiiU, Nintendo UK is still doing nothing to promote the WiiU, have they eve noticed Xmas is next month? Noone outside Nintendo Life even knows Smash Bros is coming in time for Xmas!
Already pre-ordered my link amiibo. The only other ones I want are toon link and zero suit
Ugh, after seeing what has happened to the quality of the figures I'm really on the fence getting even one of these... A real shame, the E3 prototypes were such a pleasure for the eyes
Nice commercials.
@Bishasaurus
It's funny because I already took issue with the transparent plastic stalks on some of the original demonstration figures, which all things being equal weren't that bad, so these are really fugly to me, with the fugly coloured chunks of plastic on some of the models and the slight drop in quality of the actual models themselves too. It's a wee bit of shame the final models couldn't have at least matched the preview models and ideally that Nintendo couldn't design these models in poses that didn't require any additional plastic supports at all, like both the Disney Infinity and Skylanders figures have already managed.
cringes god...lets never ask for advertizing from nintendo again....
The commercials are fine. Simple "this exists" reminders to fit inbetween kids shows. If it was all there was ever going to be it would be a problem but Mario Kart 8 itself advertises them. Smash Bros. itself is going to have a constant reminder of an option you can only use if you buy the figurines. For owners of the games (almost every Wii U owner) that'll be more effective than TV commercials.
Amiibos aren't a main event yet, but will carve out a nice section of the video game retail space JUST for Nintendo. Over time I think it's going to leave a powerful impression of "missing out" for those that haven't bought Nintendo consoles in a long time.
That said, the reinforced stands are disappointing for sure. I do wish they'd do a limited run with the original (fragile) style setup for those who aren't worried about kids breaking them in half. I'd bite on a couple (figuratively!).
I'm very optimistic with these overall, though. This is actually a stronger opening than I expected when it seemed like Smash Bros. was going to be the only supported game at launch at all. Nintendo was able to put a few compelling extra uses in there.
Even the simple Mario Kart interaction. I was skeptical at first, but after this DLC I was surprised at how much I enjoyed having new characters. Seems like a shallow addition but the more custom options to differentiate the driver with the better. We'll get a couple Amiibos and I think it'll be fun "dressing up" for races. Mild fun yes, but value-added nonetheless.
I like the first commercial better than the second. It shows off more of the amiibo and more effectively communicates that they work between multiple games.
These are way better than any ad I've seen for the Wii U itself.
Surprisingly, I just saw one of these commercials on last night, ha.
So, I just got a chance to watch these commercials with sound. Not bad at all. The message is there. Works with multiple games, "ultimate sidekick". It even manages to briefly advertise some upcoming games in the process.
The second one has the strong message: "I couldn't have done it without Mario" but we are looking at the toy itself. They are simple, and a little understated in their presentation, but it's the sort of thing that makes an impression after seeing it ten times during kids programming.
Everyone has to remember that you can't possibly be the audience for these commercials. You come to the internet and specifically a Nintendo site for information. Many of you watch Nintendo Directs from start to finish. Of course you really, really don't need this commercial.
Hey, the MP10 logo's different.
HOLY SNAP THAT'S ONLY THREE DAYS
You can tell the guy who lost at smash was going to lose just because of the controller he was using.
@Link506 I couldn't tell who won. They were both indifferent. But controller>gamepad for SmashU fo sho
@shigulicious I mean the guy at the end end who said something like, "How did you do that?" He was obviously a noob who has never even touched a smash game before, because anyone with any intelligence would take anything BUT the wii remote.
i'm so excited! I just can't hide it!
This will be the WiiU all over again. The fanboys will buy five of them and look on incredulously as the market fails to even so much as hold the door for this. It's barely a proof on concept and the simplest conceivable nfc application at that. But yeah, "great things to come" of course, according to Nintendo. At least here nobody can blame third party developers, because this is going to hurt.
