I don't think the controls of touchscreen devices offer much in the way of depth or precision. However, I do think there is a potential for games that require skill on the touchscreen market, although they would require a different skillset than that of a console game which demands precision controls. There are many RPG and Strategy games that are challenging on a different level; you need to plan attacks effectively, use resources wisely, solve puzzles or find creative solutions to problems, etc.
When I was a kid, I would play games like Myst, Zork, etc. with my family in addition to games like Mario, Rock'N'Roll Racing, etc. For me, solving a particularly difficult puzzle offered the same sense of achievement as pulling off a tricky stunt in a regular game.
Anyways, I do believe that touchscreen gaming has the potential to offer a deep experience, if the game caters to the strengths of the technology. Unfortunately, as mentioned in the article, many touchscreen developers take advantage of the mainstream market to produce addictive gameplay that encourages users to pay extra in order to advance.
I was actually looking at this the other day. I played Myst back in the day, but I think I was like... 5 or 6... so I was really happy to see the price cut and thought a 3DS version might be nice.
I'll probably cave and get this for the 3DS, (if the Superhero Creator is included in the handheld version.) I really enjoy Scribblenauts. It's just a lot of fun.
I'm really enjoying the game so far. It reminds me a lot of Level 5's Ni No Kuni, (before anything really serious happens), and so I'm finding it a bit nostalgic haha.
Very cute, though. Definitely captures a feeling of childhood innocence.
I'm interested to see what will happen with this. My favorite parts about Zelda were never the dungeons, but exploring the open world, discovering new characters, and stumbling upon side-quests and secrets. Not to say that I didn't enjoy the dungeons, of course, but to me Zelda always had its own living world and a great atmosphere, and as long as that is still there then I'm happy
When you read it, it's a little confusing, and seems to ask for the Princess' name. However, when you watch the video, the host clearly emphasizes the phrase "of this game" so I think it was pretty clear. And, as others have mentioned, if they had misunderstood the question they probably would have written "Who is Zelda".
I agree that it was fair, as Zelda is the name of F.Scott Fitzgerald's wife, so "Zelda" as an answer doesn't demonstrate that you know the name of the game.
I actually like the idea of the "Wonder Trade". It sounds like it could be a lot of fun. (It kind of reminds me of the multiplayer trading system on Harvest Moon: ANB.) I kind of like the risk and tension associated with those types of things, lol.
And apparently the GTS is still in the game, but better, so it would just be another option for players wanting to make trades.
Glad to see such a good review! I just pre-ordered this yesterday from Amazon, (couldn't resist that cardboard box themed armor..) so I'm very happy to see the high rating. Not that I'm particularly surprised, of course lol.
@Alpha2797
According to Club Nintendo, "If you purchased the Fire Emblem: Awakening hardware bundle, you must link your Nintendo 3DS system to your Club Nintendo account and complete the registration survey for Shin Megami Tensei IV to qualify for the promotion."
To me, this doesn't sound like you need to register or fill out any surveys for Fire Emblem at all, as long as you link the Fire Emblem 3DS to the same account that Shin Megami Tensei IV will be registered to.
I could be wrong, of course, so may be better to double-check anyways.
I wouldn't mind seeing Zelda in a stronger role, (as long as her role reflects her character's strengths). Since she bears the Triforce of Wisdom, I feel there's a lot of untapped potential there for Zelda to act as a puzzle-solver.
I would also love to see Link and Zelda working together more directly, perhaps as characters that can be switched interchangeably. (Like Spirit Tracks but developed even further). I feel as though this would stay true to the franchise's overall theme as well, as the characters are often shown aiding each other anyways, (just usually from a distance).
I don't have any issues with people cheating in general, as long as whatever they do does not affect other players. It is their game and, in my opinion, they are free to enjoy it however they please.
However, obviously this becomes a problem when players bring their hacked (or heavily RNGed Pokemon) online. Even if you do not battle competitively, the extreme amount of hacking can still affect casual players in other areas, (such as the GTS). It is disappointing seeing an otherwise enjoyable trading element of the game almost broken due to the hacking.
Whether or not you consider RNG to be cheating, (I personally enjoy RNGing because I like the convoluted mathematical and programming component of the process. For me trying to manipulate the numbers in the right way is part of the fun, and you do not end up with something that could not occur in the game naturally anyways), the act of RNGing for things such as perfect IVs and good natures does have larger consequences. From my experience, it raises the standard of competitive battles so that if you do not have a perfect Pokemon, you are unable to compete. It also floods the GTS with strong/shiny Pokemon, which may take advantage of players who do not understand what RNGing is.
Anyways, long story short, do whatever you want, but keep it to yourself lol. Also, I was under the impression that hacked Pokemon were already disqualified from tournaments?
I am a little disappointed. I never played Yoshi's Island, but I loved Yoshi's Story as a kid and was really looking forward to a new installment in the franchise.
Ha, this is a funny story. I can't really blame them for being "misleading", though. I believe the box just states "REQUIRES N64 Expansion Pak," which is true. Of course you would assume that the additional memory is the reason it requires the Expansion Pak, seeing that that is the function of the Expansion Pak.
However, I don't really expect them to write "REQUIRES N64 Expansion Pak due to game-breaking glitch that we couldn't figure out how to fix" on the box.
I just downloaded Starship Damrey and I'm absolutely loving it so far. It reminds me of oldschool point-and-click adventures. Also, while there is no tutorial, the game doesn't leave you completely in the dark either. There are explanations as to which buttons do what and so forth, but the instructions are integrated into the game, so it seems more natural.
According to the link Meteora posted, the Rich Village makes "items more expensive to buy and sell". So Jon should also be able to earn more money, assuming he doesn't buy too much XD
Also great article! Very funny and I'm looking forward to New Leaf more and more XD
I'm a little confused. The website Kickstarter says it is "A comedy-puzzle game following the adventures of Orion the robot and friends for the Nintendo eShop and DSiWare!" and the rewards say "A digital copy of Orion's Odyssey for Nintendo's eShop or DSiWare". Doesn't this mean that it is for both DSi and 3DS?
Or does it just mean that it is a DSiware game that you can also download from the eShop onto the 3DS?
EDIT: Nevermind, found my own answer. The Kickstarter page says that they "decided to bring the game to the downloadable marketplace of Nintendo's DSiWare, which is also accessible via the eShop on 3DS units."
Looking forward to reading about the silly things Jon gets up to in his town.
New Leaf comes out two days after I leave for Colombia, so I won't be able to play it until I get back. These articles will help keep me entertained though
@shinobi88 I would imagine that a movie that shows someone's head exploding in a bloody mess of gore would be rated 18+. So the kid shouldn't have been there, unless the parents decided that bloody gore is something their child is mature enough to be subjected to. That's what the rating is for.
Also, whether or not you find butt cheeks classy, the "censored" version still shows almost as much "cheek". People aren't arguing about whether the original image is classy as much as they are discussing whether the "censored" version really accomplished anything.
On a related note, I guess I can't go swimming anymore without a curtain over my rear end? Keep it classy?
Though I guess I'm a little confused, as isn't the game rated Teen, with a "Mild Suggestive Themes" warning? Shouldn't this have already been covered by the rating? I guess I'm not sure who they're trying to protect, exactly.
Although I understand some fans might be upset about Fire Emblem's characters being promoted in a somewhat promiscuous manner, (which I do understand, as it kind of devalues the experience a bit with blatant fanservice) but at least it's optional content. Though for once I would like to see swimsuit pictures that aren't intended to be provocative. I feel bad that these characters aren't allowed to go swimming without being sexualized, lol.
I would really prefer if they had just left it alone. The first image was fine; the only thing that made it a little suggestive were her hands I guess, but really it just looks like she's adjusting the fabric. And her face makes her seem kind of annoyed, which makes the image cute and funny to me.
The "censored" picture is ugly with the cloth, doesn't really cover up much more of the girl, (only the bikini part really) and as others have mentioned, makes it appear as though she's not wearing anything. Good job, North America :/
I also don't understand why "girl standing in a bikini" is inappropriate while "girl's bikini top actually falling off" is not?
Thank you for this wonderfully expansive interview. Steamworld Dig is my most anticipated eShop release and I really enjoyed reading about the history behind the game and the history behind Image & Form.
I really love the post-apocalyptic steampunk feel to this game world. The artwork is fantastic; I love the little robot guys and the adorable little squiggly bug things. I'm also very happy about the randomly generated maps, as that definitely allows for more replayability.
I am also happy to hear that 3D will be used, but not as a "selling feature". I think the 3D effect is gorgeous when used to subtly display background layers and what-not, but I dislike when the hardware becomes forefront to the game itself.
I'm not sure what else I hope to see in the game, as it looks wonderful already. Though in games like this, (digging, exploration) I really love it when you come across something unexpected while mining. Like when you're mining, and you're just expecting to find jewels or gold to convert to cash, but you come across a neat upgrade or something instead. Or a small random event between another character just for fun. Just so you can turn to your friends and ask "Oh hey, did you find X when you were playing too?" and they can say, "No, but I found Y!"
I don't know, haha. But anyways, really looking forward to this title
I'm not sure it's fair to call a kid stupid for not thinking to look for secret passages XD
I mean, when none of the games they've played until now have had secret passages, why would they think to look for them? We don't wander around the streets in the real world looking for secret passages, because we have no reason to think that they would be there. Because there probably aren't any, because nobody builds them XD
If anything, blame the game developers for continually making games easier and more accessible, and not adding anything like the secret passages we used to know into childrens' games anymore.
I've been playing on Hard difficulty and soft resetting most of the times I've lost characters.
I still find classic enjoyable and challenging despite resetting. For me, I enjoy that if I'm on a tricky map, I can decide whether it's worth it to me to let a character die in order to complete the map easier, or reset in order to try again. I also like having to decide whether it's worth it to try and level up a weaker character with the risk of having them die on me, and thus having to start over again.
I chose this option because it's what I find the most enjoyable, and I hope everyone is having fun regardless of what mode they're on, and whether they reset or not. If you're having fun, you're playing the game right
Oh wow, there's quite a few things I'm interested in. I think I'll pick up Liberation Maiden for myself and Crimson Shroud for the boyfriend since they're on sale. I am kind of interested in Witch & Hero as well, despite the bad review. It seems to have an odd sort of charm?
I'm also oddly attracted to this Super Little Acorns thing that is going on.
Aha. If you click on the listing it takes you back to the main page, instead of a product description page. However, if you click on the "Add to Cart" button it actually adds it to your cart and takes you to a purchase page.
It also lists it as only being 2.00 € when it's in your cart... Thinking someone should let this company know before people actually try and buy it. Anyone speak Spanish? o.O
I'd be happy if this is true as well. I've been hoping for some news on a Majora's Mask 3DS remake. I loved Ocarina of Time 3D
From what I've read in previous articles, Nintendo would be outsourcing the project to another group to do, so they would still be able to work on a new Zelda at the same time.
I think both "carp" and "carps" are technically correct pluralizations, but most people just say "carp". I think I prefer "Carps and Dragons" for the title, though, because "Carp and Dragons" is hard to say XD
"Carp" is also a verb that means to criticize or find fault with, (he carps about something). Could give the title a double meaning, haha.
Anyways, the game looks really nice from the video. The fish are so cute
I am personally rather fond of Kickstarter. Like anything, you need to be careful and make wise, informed decisions about who you are giving your money to. Most of the projects I've backed have been from developers, (Double Fine, inXile, Lionhead) or writers that I am already very familiar with and who I trust.
The reason I started using Kickstarter to help fund projects is that I've watched my favorite developers unable to work on the projects that they love, and create the kinds of games that I used to love, due to demands of publishers to create safe, sell-able games.
Ha! I remember pattern blocks from elementary school! This looks cute; I like the artwork and the idea.
Though for international backers it's a bit costly, as it's an additional $13 US just for shipping. So it'll be $38 or $43 for the game instead of $25 or $30. I would honestly have preferred a digital release, although I can understand the desire for a boxed version as well. Hmm.

I would also love to see Link and Zelda working together more directly, perhaps as characters that can be switched interchangeably. (Like Spirit Tracks but developed even further). Re: The Pokémon Company Lays Down The Law On Cheaters
@Raikoo
Ahh okay, thank you! I wasn't aware that they were so lenient about it :/
Re: The Pokémon Company Lays Down The Law On Cheaters

I think both "carp" and "carps" are technically correct pluralizations, but most people just say "carp". I think I prefer "Carps and Dragons" for the title, though, because "Carp and Dragons" is hard to say XD
"Carp" is also a verb that means to criticize or find fault with, (he carps about something). Could give the title a double meaning, haha.
Anyways, the game looks really nice from the video. The fish are so cute
Re: Talking Point: The Blurring Lines of Kickstarter Fundraising Goals
I am personally rather fond of Kickstarter. Like anything, you need to be careful and make wise, informed decisions about who you are giving your money to. Most of the projects I've backed have been from developers, (Double Fine, inXile, Lionhead) or writers that I am already very familiar with and who I trust.
The reason I started using Kickstarter to help fund projects is that I've watched my favorite developers unable to work on the projects that they love, and create the kinds of games that I used to love, due to demands of publishers to create safe, sell-able games.
Re: Indie Dev Island Officials Turning To Kickstarter To Fund Boxed DS Game
Hmm.
Re: Weirdness: Fire Emblem Devs Answer That Burning Question: What Happened To Everyone's Feet?
I guess I haven't been paying attention to their feet enough... I didn't notice anything until now lol.
Re: Fantasy Life Trademark Appears in the U.S.
Yay! I've been looking forward to this news. Definitely excited!
Re: Nintendo Download: 28th March 2013 (North America)
I'll be getting Legend of the River King
I never played the GBC version and I have heard very good things.
