Re: Review: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS)

Klinny

I downloaded this yesterday and have been enjoying it very much. My only real complaint so far is with the font they used for the text, which can be very difficult to read, especially when townspeople are talking. In 3D it can be an absolute mess, depending where the slider is. (At some points it looks like the letters are all on different layers...) I hope this is less of an issue for 3DS XL owners.

The rest of the game is lovely, however.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (3DS)

Klinny

Thank you for the review! I'll be downloading this game tomorrow!
I'm not remarkably upset about the lack of online multiplayer personally, but that is likely because I've never played a console version of Monster Hunter, (only PSP) so I'm used to the local-multiplayer-only restrictions.

Re: Talking Point: The Pros and Cons of a Wii U Price War

Klinny

For myself personally, I'm not really interested in the Wii U at the moment. I could forgive the price, but there are actually no Wii U games that I'm interested in playing. And in addition, there are a lot of 3DS, PS3, and PS2 games that I still want to play, so it's really hard to justify buying a new system right now.

Another issue that has been mentioned is the lack of advertisements, or lack of clear advertisements. Some of my friends thought that a "Wii U" was just a new model of Wii, (Similar to a PS Slim or 3DS XL).

Re: Talking Point: Review Scores and Unwinnable Arguments

Klinny

Generally I'll read a portion of the text, then scroll down the read the score, and then if I'm still interested and curious I'll read more of the text.

If I'm interested in the game, then the actual text is more valuable to me than the score. However, I will keep the overall score in mind while reading as it lets me know how important a certain aspect of the game is. For example, if there's a paragraph detailing a particular flaw, (annoying voice-overs for example) but the game got a score of a 9, I know that the annoying voice-overs are a very minor concern.

As for influencing my buying decision, a good score will confirm my pre-existing desire to purchase a game while a poor score will lead me to cross-reference and research the game more thoroughly. A good review generally won't be enough to convince me to purchase a game that I had no previous interest in.

Re: Developer Interview: Ambient Studios On The Possiblity Of Bringing Death Inc. To Wii U

Klinny

@adrenochrome

  • Do you mean comment on the Kickstarter page? As long as you donate at least one pound/dollar, you may add comments.
  • The way Kickstarter works is that you can change your pledge amount at any time before the Kickstarter project ends successfully, unless changing your pledge will put the total below the goal. If the project is unsuccessful, no money is taken.

However, no money will be returned after the Kickstarter ends. So if you pledged hoping for a WiiU version, and that goal was not met, you would not get any money back unless you withdrew your pledge before the campaign ended.

Re: Ninterview: Heather "Miss Gamer Girl" Cascioli

Klinny

I don't think gender has anything to do with it, really. The first Ninterview article was about "Super Famicom Guy". They do cover gender stereotypes in the article, but I don't think that means they chose to write the article because of her gender. It's something that logically would follow from an interview when there definitely are stereotypes associated with the interviewee.

I don't intend to start any arguments here, but I wanted to mention that all this attention regarding gender, (positive or negative) is the reason that a lot of girls remain ambiguous over the internet. Gamer girls aren't remarkably uncommon, but once we make our gender obvious, (for example, by using a handle called Miss Gamer Girl, despite the fact that guys can be called Super Famicon Guy and etc. without incident) we are either harassed or sexualized. Or we are accused of intentionally bringing attention to the fact that we are female and called "attention seeking". Many of us will either be forced to pretend to be male, or let others assume we are male and not correct them, just so we can enjoy playing the game.

Anyways, enough about that. I am impressed by Heather's vintage collection, and the beadwork is lovely too. I never got into those ironing beads when I was younger, but I like how they are being used to mimic sprite art

Re: XSEED Publishing Rune Factory 4 In North America

Klinny

Yay! I'm really looking forward to this.

@Einherjar The 3DS can play DS games from other regions, but not 3DS games, (at least for the North American 3DS. Perhaps EU 3DS is different?) I've imported European DS games and have had no problem playing them on my 3DS, (aside from not being able to select the language I want, lol, but that is an irrelevant issue if you just want to play in English).
Edit: Ah, I wasn't aware of the DSi restrictions mentioned above!

@Azikira From my understanding, you can unlock an option to change your character's appearance to different characters, (including male/female protagonist). So you could play as a male who looks like a female, and marry a female character for example. Here's a link to the forums where I read about it: http://nisamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5356&sid=1486f7a1bd056cfa024481f4845d1b0c&start=120 (There may be spoilers).

Re: Talking Point: Gun Violence and Nintendo is an Unlikely Pairing

Klinny

Okay, focusing primarily on the child's own words:

"My favorite is the M1911. I shot a real M1911 when I lived in the country. I shot with my Grandpa. " This leads me to believe that he originally lived in the country where his grandfather taught him how to shoot. It is not uncommon for those in the country, especially farm owners, to carry and use firearms.

"I like guns more because of Call of Duty. "

He likes guns more after playing the game, meaning that he had a pre-existing interest in firearms before playing COD.

I see very little correlation between video games and gun violence from this quote. I see a child who has been exposed to firearms and taught to shoot at a young age by older family members. Maybe this is the issue we should be focusing on.

However, it should also be noted that those in the country are often susceptible to dangers, such as cougars, bears, etc. so it may not be completely unreasonable to familiarize and educate a child on gun ownership, safety, and proper use if it is something that he may be required to use one day. (Of course this is speculative, and I don't believe an M1911 is a hunting weapon, so this situation may be a little extreme).

Re: Aonuma: Wii U Zelda Is All About "Rethinking Series Conventions"

Klinny

I'm interested in the non-linear aspects of the new Zelda. I'm all for rethinking gameplay, but in my opinion the "innovative" elements of previous Zelda games seemed gimicky to me. The DS games were all about the stylus, which in moderation could have been fine, but I didn't enjoy prforming every action with the stylus just because it was the new innovation at the time. Also Spirit Tracks was unplayable to me, as it required you to physically blow into the microphone, which is a nightmare on a standard 3DS.

I enjoyed the subquests in Skyward Sword, and the feeling of knowing there would be new conversations and quests to find back in Skyloft after major events. However, the world seemed very disconnected to me. My favorite part about the N64 titles was exploring the (at the time) massive worlds and environments. I also spent most of Skyward Sword fighting with the WiiMote, having to recalibrate it every 10 or so minutes.

Anyways, the point that I was trying to make is that while I am excited about innovation in the series, I am worried that the gameplay will be designed around a specific piece of hardware (the gamepad in this case) and that will affect the enjoyment of the game. It seems to me that recently, Zelda games have been designed to promote new hardware, instead of the other way around.

With all that being said, however, I am excited about the prospect of multiplayer, though I hope that it will not be limited to one player on screen and one player on the gamepad.

Re: Nintendo Download: 17th January 2013 (North America)

Klinny

I am enjoying the Fire Emblem demo. My only complaint is that the battles are on a grid system, which feels like it should be controlled using the stylus, but instead it uses the thumbstick which feels less natural to me.

This is a minor complaint, however.

Re: The Cave On Wii U Is "Pretty Much" Like Other Versions

Klinny

@ocarinadude14 The PS3 Preview seems largely favorable while the Wii U version seems to have gotten quite a few complaints. The main issue seems to be with the camera controls in co-op. I'm wondering if there was a difference in console versions, or if the players just had different opinions.

Re: UK Press Pins Blame For Sandy Hook Massacre On Video Games

Klinny

The content of the Sun article actually isn't that bad. It just lists the various military-themed things the guy was interested in. The quote opens with "The boys were fans of the military" not "The boys were fans of violent video games". The headline skews this, though, as they chose to focus entirely on Call of Duty as the problem.

The Daily Express is just silly, though. (First of all, it begins a statement with the word "chillingly". Apparently this writer does not have basic writing skills.) Secondly, there is no logical correlation between Dynasty Warriors and the actions this guy took, other than someone, no mention of who, thinks that it might.

I'm really getting tired of seeing these types of articles after every tragedy, though. They are clearly picking controversial topics in order to sell more papers, completely undermining the actual event and disrespecting everyone who lost their lives, and the family of those who lost their lives. Often these killers suffer from serious psychological problems, and by pinning blame in other areas, we are also undermining the severity of real issues like mental illness or abuse.

Re: 18-Rated Content on Wii U eShop Only Accessible for Four Hours a Day

Klinny

This still seems very excessive to me. I think the option should be available should parents choose to use it, but it should be a parental control option, (such as "Allow this console to view mature content? Yes/No"). You could have it set to No by default. Personally I would find adjusting the options far less irritating than only being given a 4-hour window to download. Although you can just go a store and buy a game, my concern is for future demos.

Though this line "observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries" leads me to believe that Nintendo is only conforming to regulations. I'm not familiar with European laws, but I'm assuming there is something like a product or service that is targeting towards children can only provide mature content at specific hours?

Re: Error Prevents Purchase Of ZombiU And Assassin's Creed III On Euro Wii U eShop

Klinny

This seems... excessive. As a 23-year old who gets up at 6am for University, I need to get to bed at 10pm to get a proper 8-hours sleep. As do both of my parents, who also get up early, and are usually asleep well before 10. Obviously this does not apply to everyone, (and, let's face it, when was the last time I actually got 8 hours of sleep, anyways?) but this restriction seems to be promoting sleep deprivation in adults. I find this oddly unsettling.

While this may prevent very young children from viewing mature content, I don't think a 10pm restriction will hinder most teenagers. Unless, as mentioned, they have strict parents, in which case they would likely have their video games monitored anyways...

Re: Register Paper Mario: Sticker Star On Club Nintendo To Receive An A-peel-ing Sticker Book

Klinny

@oninowon This is true, however I believe the Donkey Kong download was only available to those who purchased the eShop version of PMSS. Those who bought the retail copy did not get anything.

However, I think being able to play the game a month before the UK is more than enough of a reward for us in North America. The book is definitely a cute, though, so congrats to whoever gets one

Re: Review: Scribblenauts Unlimited (Wii U)

Klinny

Thank you for this review!

If anyone has been playing the Wii U or PC version, I was wondering what your thoughts were on the Object Creator? I would prefer to get the 3DS version, but I was wondering if you felt that the lack of Object Creator would subtract significantly from the game?

I've played the previous installments, and I'm worried that without the Object Creator, there won't really be enough new gameplay options to warrant purchasing another incarnation.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Shrinks Prices and Consoles

Klinny

I live in Canada near Vancouver, and internet accessibility varies throughout the area. Most of us have good, stable connections, but there is a portion of the population that have poor connections and unreliable Wi-Fi access, (particularly those in basement suits who have to share the landlord's internet). Outside the city in the rural areas, many are still using dial-up. I would also imagine there would be more connectivity issues in areas with extreme weather.

However, those rural areas, while they do take up a good deal of space, do not necessarily contain a high percentage of the population. This leads me to view the comment of the country having "'almost third-world access to the internet' in various areas of the country" a little skeptically. In my area at least, online gaming is very popular and families definitely use their gaming consoles for Netflix.

Re: Wii Mini Is Official And Has No Online Connectivity

Klinny

I don't think it's a terrible idea. I'd assume that it's targeted towards families with young children, (who generally don't play online anyways). For a lot of people, they just want to play Wii games, and this will let them do that without paying for a bunch of extra options that may never be used.

I might have been interested in it myself if I didn't already own a Wii, as I don't use the online options very much.

Re: Talking Point: Games That Need Wii U - World of Warcraft

Klinny

As a WoW player, I'm not sure how well this particular game would work out.

For one I don't think WoW is the type of game Nintendo wants to promote. It can be very addictive, and while Nintendo does release addictive games, (such as Animal Crossing) they are almost always limited in how often you can play the game in one day.

theblackdragon has brought up a good point about mods and plugins. The interface screenshot used in this article is using several third-party modifications that are not available in the core game. Even if the Wii-U can access the interface using keyboard and touch screen, it will still be limited compared to the PC version.

That being said, I am not against console MMO's. I just don't think WoW is the best example of one that should be on Wii-U.

Re: Review: NightSky (3DS eShop)

Klinny

I'm really enjoying this game so far. I skipped Normal mode and went right to Alternative, as I loved the appeal of being thrown right in with no tutorials or explanations. I'm pleased that it gives you the option to select the two modes right off the bat, as I was worried I'd have to play through the entire game first before being allowed to play on a difficulty I prefer.

I also love the art style, and so far this is the only game that I actually prefer to play in 3D.

Re: The Denpa Men are Coming to Your 3DS Next Week

Klinny

The demo was surprisingly enjoyable! It's kind of funny to have to wander around the house trying to find the room with the best/most "radio waves", too. Will definitely be getting the full game next week.

I can't wait to be a Denpa Man, too.

Re: Sony: Wii U Offering "Something That Vita and PS3 can do Quite Easily"

Klinny

"In the meantime, you look at the Vita consumer and a very high percentage — almost all of them — own a PS3. So you see that crossover works."

The problem with this statement, though, is that while almost every Vita owner may have a PS3, this does not mean that almost every PS3 owner has a Vita. Of course I don't know the statistics, but I am personally not interested in a Vita and so this feature will never be applicable to me, despite my owning a PS3.

I also tried out the PS3 Remote Play option with the PSP, and I remember it being a huge pain in the you-know-what. While it was a good idea, it was never implemented well, and felt extremely clunky and unintuitive. Even if the PS3-Vita crossover is fabulous, that experience leaves me hesitant to try it again, and even more hesitant to spend money on it.

Re: Ever Wonder Why Pokémon Black And White 2 Isn't On The 3DS?

Klinny

I'm fine with BW2 being on the DS. I am personally a fan of the graphical and gameplay style used in BW, and so I am not disappointed that the sequel was not upgraded for the more powerful system.

Also as many have mentioned, as BW2 is a direct sequel, it could be seen in bad taste to force fans to upgrade their console in order to play it. I consider BW2 to be similar to Platinum, Crystal, etc. (as although it is more involved than a revision, it is also not a new generation), so for me, it wouldn't make sense to release it for 3DS only.

Re: Why the White 3DS XL Didn't Ship to Europe or North America

Klinny

I don't mind white, but I tend to avoid buying white electronics as they tend to look pretty grimy after a while. I got a red 3DS personally, but that was because the only colors available at the time were red and blue.

I prefer pink and purple myself, although as mentioned already, the shade of pink for the 3DS is kind of... less-than fantastic. (Reminds me of a Barbie-playset kind of pink...) I love the purple though, and really wish it was available earlier.

Re: Rumour: Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask Coming To 3DS

Klinny

I would love for this to be true. I loved Ocarina of Time 3D, (especially with the inclusion of the Master's Quest, which I never had a chance to play before). Also, being also to play it on a portable system is fantastic.

Of course this rumor has been going around for a while, with quotes from Nintendo first saying they wouldn't and then saying they might, so who knows

Re: Rest Easy, New Characters Are Coming To Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U

Klinny

@shonenjump86 I definitely agree with the addition of female characters. I'm a little tired of my only options being Zelda, Samus, or Peach. (Or... Jigglypuff? Was Jigglypuff a girl..?)

Though I suppose I wouldn't want them to add a character just because she is female, but it's a little disappointing that there aren't more popular Nintendo characters that also happen to be girls, (with the exception of the above mentioned, two of which are princesses that need to be saved constantly).

Maybe Dixie Kong? XD

Re: No Sequel From The World Ends With You Teaser

Klinny

I'm not sure people are upset about the iOS version of TWENY being hyped so much as they are upset about the manner in which it was being hyped. The countdown got a lot of people's hopes up and then, naturally, left a lot of people disappointed after, as a sequel was a logical assumption.

The iOS version should be hyped and given the attention it deserves, especially if it helps popularize the series, but Square Enix should have realized this would upset their already-established fanbase. (That is, the TWENY fanbase, not the DS fanbase).

Of course, in defense of Square Enix, a countdown really is the most fitting method to advertise their game, so maybe I'm being too hard on them. (But, then again, wouldn't the in-game reference only be applicable to those who have already played the game?)

I'm thinking on this way too much. Either way, at least this helps raise the standards for iOS gaming. If I had an iphone and no DS I'd be pretty stoked right now.

Re: No Sequel From The World Ends With You Teaser

Klinny

@Incognito_D I believe that was correct, but if I remember correctly, the auto-controlled version of the character would never do as well as if you were controlling them yourselves.

I was never able to play both simultaneously. I had to switch between them, haha. I think I would just leave Neko in a corner somewhere while I quickly switched to the top character and tried to pull off some combo. It was fun, though.

Re: No Sequel From The World Ends With You Teaser

Klinny

Ugh. While I enjoyed TWEWY, I wouldn't say I've been waiting for a sequel. Even I'm a little bit miffed about this, though, and I could imagine proper fans feeling pretty let down at the moment. I'm sure Square Enix knows that most people were hoping for a sequel, and not a re-release. All this hype to try and convince fans to re-buy the same game is a little distasteful, in my opinion.

(Although I suppose it's good for players who wanted to play the game, have an iphone/ipad, but not a Nintendo DS... But I can't imagine that being a very large percentage of the people following this news though?)

Re: Review: Abyss (DSiWare)

Klinny

Thanks for the review, this will really help me decide whether I'll give Abyss a try or not. I'm a little disappointed by the lack of depth, but at 2 dollars it's difficult to complain.

Re: The Legend of Zelda is Now 25 in The U.S.

Klinny

I'm kind of dying for some new information on the next 3DS Zelda. I would love a remake of Majora's Mask personally, (I loved the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time!) If they make a new title, though, I just really hope it isn't gimicky, and that they focus on gameplay instead of showcasing the gyroscope or 3D capabilities of the system.

Re: Pick Up Keldeo For Free in Pokémon Giveaway

Klinny

@Kitsune_Rei Keldeo is transferrable to Black and White 2, and finding trades online (especially the serebii forums) is usually pretty easy. If you're not particularly concerned about it being cloned, anyways, which it almost most certainly will be. I think that could be a better alternative to buying Black or White, though.

As for knowing whether the event is happening or not, I think you just have to go to Gamestop and ask, (or call them). I asked an employee earlier in the month, though, and he told me that he didn't know yet, and that I should come back closer to the event date.. :/
