This is a superb game that I played back in the day, but could never get that far into due to its difficulty. I've really come to appreciate it in recent years, it's an incredibly well designed game. Its only gripe might be that it's a little too slow, otherwise it's a 16-bit classic!
1) Nintendo DSi Browser 2) Art Style: Boxlife 3) Paper Plane 4) Mario Clock 5) Asphalt 4: Elite Racing 6) Mario Calculator 7) Wario Ware: Snapped! 8) Pyoro 9) Sudoku 50! For Beginners 10) Brain Challenge 11) A Little Bit of... Puzzle League 12) A Little Bit of...Dr Mario 13) Pop Superstar Road to Celebrity 14) A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun: Shuffle Games 15) Real Football 2009 16) A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun: Funny Face 17) Animal Crossing Clock 18) A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun: Deep Psyche 19) A Little Bit of... Brain Training Maths Edition 20) Art Style Kubos
Funny how the majority of the games I've purchased aren't on there! Good to know us Brits are liking BoxLife though
Boo at DSiWare I've already got Sudoku 150 dammit! WiiWare might be interesting though, looking forward to a review of Colorz.
VC is pretty great for me, I got Pop 'n Twinbee on the SNES sometime earlier this year and loved it, so I'm definitely interested in Datana. and I'll check Dreamland 3 out as I personally enjoyed Kirby 64 despite the mixed reception, I think I'll enjoy this one too!
Overall, pretty good week I'd say! Though DSiWare disappoints
Holy hot damn is this game addictive! I had a feeling I'd love it but I was put off for a while due to mixed impressions. Needless to say, it's one of the best DSiWare games I've downloaded. If you're a puzzler fan, give it a go, chances are you'll get sucked into its colour matching charms the same way I have!
@MetalMario You can play it with the dpad+buttons. Personally though I think the touch screen does wonders to the game, it allows for much more combo-potential!
This seems like an alright version, shame it's missing the multiplayer and puzzle modes. If you could get it cheap enough, the cart version is probably the better option. All the same, quick on-board Puzzle League isn't too shabby an idea
Bplus do seem like a talented developer in areas (particularly presentation), but game design appears to be their biggest downfall, at least from what I've heard/seen. I've not bought or played any of their games, so I may be wrong (and apologetically if so), but that's the impression I get anyway. Hopefully they'll one day find that one concept that 'clicks'
I decided to pick this up, and for what it is, it's great! I actually prefer the interface to Brain Training's which surprised me. It's a cheap, quick way to play sudoku without a cartridge, which I couldn't say no to
I played this back on Shenmue and did like it, though due to the strict no credits rule I could never get far. When I heard this was coming to VC, I was pretty excited I love classic Sega.
But then I saw this review...hmm, that held me back a bit. Nonetheless, I had the feeling that with all due respect to the reviewer, I'd disagree. So I went and downloaded it anyway...
And I absolutely love it. It's fast, it's exhilarating, it's insane, I'm having tons of fun with it! I'm actually using nunchuk mode for tilting, which is a little over-sensitive, but when you get used to it it works really well. I can see where the reviewer is coming from with his points, but for me part of the fun is just how fast and challenging it is. Sure, it is ruthlessly hard, and you'll die endlessly, but when you're quickly up again and zooming through checkered plains full of mushrooms, branching trees and monster after monster, I'm having too much fun to mind it
Long story short, I love this game, Mr Aaron doesn't. That's fine of course, we both have our reasons and we've both come out of a game with different impressions. To anyone thinking about getting it, don't get 100% turned off due to the review, but at the same time consider it along with other impressions and perhaps a video or two. It is perhaps a bit pricey for such a downright-arcade game, but it's one of the most downright enjoyable games I've downloaded on the Wii. Of course I could eventually get fed up of it, but I could equally see myself coming back to it now and then in the future
Such a great game My only complaint would be it's perhaps a little too unforgiving if you make mistakes. Otherwise it's the best racing game ever made in my opinion.
Wow, graphically that looks great for the DS (short draw distance aside), lovely style to it. Gameplay wise it looks...curious One to keep an eye on I reckon.
I actually thought it might be using the DSi's beefed up hardware abilities until I read it could be played in multiplayer with other DSes.
I love this game Currently playing through it on the SNES, and have just arrived at "Euro". It does have some nasty difficulty spikes though (curse those vampires!)
I honestly wasn't interested at first, since I own the original Wario Ware GBA cart, but now that there appears to be new modes, I think I'll buy it (whenever I get a DSi)
That's a thought, they could have an alternative service for these arcade games where there is no initial charge, but you have to pay Wii points for credits. It'd bring the arcade experience home!
I just finished this on my Mega Drive. It's one I discovered for the first time a few years ago (Back when GameStation were selling retro games) and I've always loved it.
Used to love this game, though I could never get that far. Shinobi III (Which I hadn't played until recently) is definitely the better game but Revenge is great in its own way.
Yeah the review does seem kinda harsh, given the score of Sonic 2 SMS in comparison. It's certainly not the best Sonic game but it's very fun and admirable in its own way. Each to their own I guess
There are aspects of the Virtual Console that can be improved, but as an avid retro gamer it's been brilliant for me (And bad for my bank account ). We can moan all we want but quite frankly I'm amazed at the number of games on the service. If I had gotten a Wii now I'd be overwhelmed by the number of games I'd want, and heck there's a fair list of stuff I still need to get despite having a Wii since Christmas 2006.
Also I don't quite agree with the "Games too retro in comparison" part of the article. Many classic retro games are (For me at least) timeless and easily compare with stuff like Rez. I do really want to play Ikaruga actually
Also I've really gotten into WiiWare as well. There is a lot of tat on there but there's at least ten games worth owning on there tastes pending, and there's a good few classics (World of Goo, Toki Tori, Lost Winds etc.). It's not been a bad year for it.
I am disappointed they don't promote either service more though, it wouldn't surprise me if most Wii owners didn't even know they existed And for goodness sake, I can't cope with the current "storage method" much longer!
In regards to 2009, we'll have to see how that goes. Hudson's message was somewhat bleak, and I can despite what I've said see where the article is coming from. Hopefully the service lives on in the way it's done for the past two years.
Anyway, essay over! I tend to get carried away, forgive me
Gah, it's a bit depressing how much muck is beginning to appear on WiiWare. Thankfully there are some gems worth digging for (I'm hoping Bruiser and Scratch will be one)
Wow...two years huh? This has become one of my most regularly visited websites ever since it hit the web. It's amazing how committed you guys have been to updating it and keeping things up to speed, it's a reliable source of information and just a very fun website to browse overall.
Looks nice, but I think the original 8-bit style will always be the one I favour. I'll definitely be playing with this new style on my first runthrough of the WiiWare game in any case
What I want to know is how they're going to handle the 'new' versions of the old tunes.
The thing that's confusing for me is that the main character's old sprite looked like he was facing forward and that the eye close to his hair at the back looked like an ear line, but it's more clear here that that isn't the intended look...but my mind is still trying to see it the way I saw the 8-bit version!
I'm going to have to admit to being pretty disappointed with this It's not a terrible game but I was expecting to love it, I only merely 'like' it. I just can't get on with the controls.
I haven't completely given up on it but it's a regret purchase for me at the moment.
I'm a newcomer to this and it's a lovely game but I'm having some trouble with the controls. They're a little too slippery and imprecise should you need to avoid enemy fire or land on the right platform. I'm going to stick with it in the hope that I get used to it.
I got the free mobile phone port of this a while back, it was actually a really fun game. The jump/kick mechanics worked really well and made it pretty satisfying I'd be tempted to make this my first C64 VC purchase!

Excellent review Damo

Re: Review: Smash Table Tennis (Virtual Console / NES)
Well to be fair, it comes out at a good time, what with the table tennis in Wii Sports Resort
Re: What Capcom games do you want to see on the Virtual Console?
Breath of Fire 1 on SNES!
The GBA game is what started my love for RPGs, I'd love to play through it again via the original version
Re: Game & Watch Donkey Kong Jr.
One of my favourite G&W games

Re: Review: Bit Boy!! (WiiWare)
Well that's a damn shame
@malnin Bit Trip Beat still offered a very solid game at 600 points
Re: Cave Story Nearing The Finish Line
Woo! o/
I'm sure I'm not alone in considering Cave Story as an all time favourite, it's pretty much guaranteed to be the best WiiWare game when it hits!
Re: Review: Sudoku 150! For Challengers (DSiWare)

Re: A Little Bit of... Puzzle League
The retail release of this is excellent, though it's a shame you can rarely find anyone on online play It really comes to life in multiplayer.

Re: Bplus Announces Bit Boy!!
This is a great idea, though a purchase will pend on reviews. I'm hoping most of the playtime is on the 16-bit part myself
Re: Super Mario Kart
Such a great game My only complaint would be it's perhaps a little too unforgiving if you make mistakes. Otherwise it's the best racing game ever made in my opinion.

Re: Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (MD)
My least favourite of the main four Sonic MD games, but it's still a brilliant game Late 8/10 or early 9/10 for me.
Re: Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (MD)
Easily my favourite Sonic game and my third all time favourite game behind Super Mario Galaxy/World. A real classic
Re: Review: Mappy (Arcade)
That's a thought, they could have an alternative service for these arcade games where there is no initial charge, but you have to pay Wii points for credits. It'd bring the arcade experience home!
Re: Final Fantasy
Really liked this on GBA, but I'm a bit annoyed that version is much easier than the original. I'll download this when it arrives

Re: OFLC Update: Even More Imports!
Pulseman! I've wanted this game for a while, so happy to see it coming to the VC
For anyone interested in it, they should also track down Drill Dozer for GBA, a really great and original platformer also from the people behind Pokémon.
Re: ClayFighter
"Unless you are just a diehard Clayfighter fan"
With all due respect, do such people even exist?
Re: Sonic Chaos
Yeah the review does seem kinda harsh, given the score of Sonic 2 SMS in comparison. It's certainly not the best Sonic game but it's very fun and admirable in its own way. Each to their own I guess
Re: OFLC Update: Two More Imports
Twinbee!
I have the PAL localized Pop 'n Twinbee games on SNES and they're excellent, I'd love to see the series on VC
Re: Toki Tori
I finally beat this today Fantastic game overall, it's still easily one of the best WiiWare games. The ending is a bit dark though!
Re: Bubble Bobble Wii - Now With 4 Player Support
Yes!
I love Bubble Bobble, easily one of my favourite arcade games, and despite having the VC NES version I'll happily buy this as well.
Just please, please have Wi-Fi! I'll get it either way but I'd be very disappointed if it didn't have the feature
Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?
There are aspects of the Virtual Console that can be improved, but as an avid retro gamer it's been brilliant for me (And bad for my bank account ). If I had gotten a Wii now I'd be overwhelmed by the number of games I'd want, and heck there's a fair list of stuff I still need to get despite having a Wii since Christmas 2006.
I love how it's gone into niché stuff like Do Re Mi Fantasy in particular. The folks who go "Where is game A/B/C/D!?" always strike me as missing the point to an extent. It's lovely to get reacquainted with old flames again, but why can't you spark new ones too just because you didn't grow up playing them?
Also I don't quite agree with the "Games too retro in comparison" part of the article. Many classic retro games are (For me at least) timeless and easily compare with stuff like Rez. I do really want to play Ikaruga actually

Mmm nice idea but I much prefer to read manga in book form, as well as having actual physical copies to keep on my shelf.

Re: Pong Toss Coming To Europe With Added Beer!
Yay.
Re: Digital Leisure Announces Sudoku Challenge!
Is there a chance some of those puzzles will be impossible? I imagine they're randomly generated.
They seem to be a very generous developer though, both their games so far have been 500 Wii points!

Oh? That's a shame as I loved the kick mechanics in the mobile game, but that's all the more incentive to get this if it plays differently
Re: Mayhem in Monsterland
I got the free mobile phone port of this a while back, it was actually a really fun game. The jump/kick mechanics worked really well and made it pretty satisfying I'd be tempted to make this my first C64 VC purchase!

Great review Alex, I can't wait for this and Orbient to hit EU!
