Yeah, not to dampen the mood but the 50Hz version really does suffer, not just because of the gameplay but it's also one of those cases where the music is slowed down as well Shame as it's such a good game otherwise (though that final stage is rather infuriating)
Gotta say, speaking as someone who's 19 who used to be the 'young' one on such websites likes these, it's wonderful to see the younger folks having their great Christmases with the newer systems But worries of senility are starting to settle in!
Chirstmas 1997. My brothers and I all asked for different presents (I asked for magnets; how sad is that!?), but we all shared one 'main' gift we dearly wanted; an N64. I'd been fascinated by Nintendo since watching Super Mario Kart in motion at friends' houses and the mesmerising bleeps of a Game Boy, so the thought of a new Nintendo console to replace our now-dead (and later replaced) Mega Drive was Christmas magic in the making.
Funny thing is I wanted a PlayStation at first...for the game based on the Looney Tunes Space Jam movie. Eep! My bros convinced me otherwise, and while the PS wouldn't have been a poor choice, I'm glad we went with the '64. We got Super Mario 64 and Diddy Kong Racing (even if initially my eldest brother advised me not to play the former due to difficulty; screw that!), two games very dear to my heart that allowed my love for Nintendo and Rare to really be cemented. I fell in love with DKR and its colourful characters (pre Bad Fur Day-Conker yes!), amazing music and fast frantic gameplay, and Mario? Well that was just glorious, you know?
But guess what? Power frigging cut! Hooray to South Wales eh...happened for a good deal of the day, which meant some sad fixated staring at the console, all of us so desperate for a race or two against some weird animal dudes. Still, you could tell a dear love for that jet black console had settled in and was there to stay. We ended up getting several games for it (up to Paper Mario and Pokémon Stadium 2 in 2001!) and plugging untold amounts of hours into it.
I've had other great Nintendo Christmases (Game Boy Color, Wii, Donkey Konga, Mario Kart Double Dash) but that's probably the most significant and most fondly remembered for me, as I've remained a huge Nintendo fan ever since. 1998 would probably be a runner up though, getting my own Game Boy Color was amazing for me, and the magic of my brother on Ocarina of Time in the background was certainly acknowledged.
I'll have to grab me 1000 points (along with the 400 stored on my Wii) to grab the latest Art Style games Otherwise not a very interesting week to me personally, but more Art Style is more Art Style!
I'm quite happy with it, as it's a fairly decent way of playing the classic MD games on the go. It certainly could have been better (not being able to play Sonic 3's competition mode in single player is silly), but it's a nice little collection of four legendary games
I was a huge GB kid growing up, and still love its best games to this day. A great system to collect for as well, a lot of the great games are cheap and there's certainly a lot of them
Funnily enough I bought this off ebay earlier in the year for £1.04
An interesting port nonetheless, and quite an impressive one in some aspects. The developer behind it went on to port Alpha 3 to GBA, which apparently is an excellent conversion.
This is indeed a great game. Fans of the genre should check it out! (and the retail title Ninjatown for that matter). I'd probably vouch for a 9 myself, but an 8 will do
Also, I love that eccentric robot assistant that guides you through the game!
Agree entirely, on it being a 9/10 game and that the lack of a "Save and Quit" option is a shame. Still, I loved this on GBA and love it even more on DSi now that I understand the gameplay a little more
@Panda There were six GBA Bit Generation games, so far we've had three converted to Art Style games. I'm hoping Dot Stream makes the jump myself!
1) Flipnote Studio 2) MySims Camera 3) Internet Browser 4) 2-in-1 Solitaire 5) Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! 6) Paper Plane 7) Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam 8) Guitar Rock Tour 9) Pyoro 10) Dictionary 6 in 1 11) Asphalt 4: Elite Racing 12) Oscar in Toyland 13) WarioWare: Snapped! 14) Mario Clock 15) Mario Calculator 16) Sudoku 50! 17) Pop+ Solo 18) A little Bit of...Dr Mario 19) Art Style: BoxLife 20) Real Football 2009
A paid download in the top two! Not a very interesting one mind
Wow, 120 years eh? With all due respect to many other excellent developers, Nintendo is by far my favourite, and without them I wouldn't be anywhere near as keenly interested in video games as I am. Ever since I was a kid I've been hooked, and that's stuck to this very day, as I continue to have a blast with both their old and current output. I've even come close to playing all of their AAA titles, with just Kirby Superstar and one or two others to go. Hey, if there's one thing I think it's worth being an obsessive nerd over, it's the big N!
I think the ultimate Nintendo moment for me was coming home after a terrible, stressful day sometime last year, really in the blues. So how does one get out of a rut? Two hours of Mario Galaxy, that's how! I don't think I've ever had such a swift mood change, and that's what Nintendo's all about for me; pure, mood-lifting fun.
I got this myself, and it's a very fine version. Does make me wish that you could play music from the SD card while playing, but as a solitaire addict, it does enough to satisfy me
Hmm, not a brilliant score, but I still quite fancy this...I love platformers and the gaudy style of the game reminds me of early 90s computer games, in a nostalgic kinda way. Might still pick it up
Think I'd prefer a portable version so I'll see how the DSiWare version fares, but I loved Mr Driller on the Dreamcast. I'm up for another round of it!
Wow, what an excellent week! I'll resist Pilotwings due to owning an original SNES cart, but it's great to see it being rereleased I could see myself getting Mario vs Donkey Kong, Bit Trip Core and Pop+ Solo quite easily.
Crikey, not agreeing with the Oracle naysaying going on here! Those were superb games, and the linkup feature that let you play the two as one whole game was icing on the cake
Brilliant review Corbie, which said everything that needs to be said about such a fine game (though I might have to yield the controversy flag and claim I prefer LA's soundtrack to LttP's).
This is a very nostalgic game for me, having an eerie and epic atmosphere that really drew me in back in my pre-double digit days, though never getting too far. It wasn't until years later that I'd finally finish it, and damn...that ending! I won't spoil it for newcomers, but you might be surprised how much punch the story of an 8-bit Game Boy game can pack...
And that's part of what makes this game such a classic, going against all the odds cruelly set against it to deliver such an amazing experience on hardware that supposedly shouldn't be allowing it. To put it frankly, it's a damn masterpiece! And to this day, my favourite game in the series
I can't say for certain Hive (though I'd be interested to know myself if anything was cut), but you get a 30 stage story mode, an 80 stage puzzle mode and an online multiplayer option (though no local, weirdly). Anything missing?
Good review! I downloaded this the other day and have to concur on recommending it, superb game I could see it being unfairly overlooked, let's hope that's not the case as we need more players on WiFi!

Re: Trip World Visits Europe's 3DS Virtual Console on 5th January
Considering how rare/expensive the cartridge is, this is a steal at that price!

Definitely liking the look of it, count me as cautiously optimistic.

Anyone seen the DK truck? http://tinyurl.com/2xk7kt
Re: Review: Excitebike: World Rally (WiiWare)
The lack of offline multiplayer sure is puzzling...especially since a Japan only version of NES Excite Bike with such a feature exists.
Still, can't wait for this to hit EU I even grabbed a cheap GBA cart of the NES Classics version in anticipation. Hopefully tonight!
Re: Britain's Best Nintendo Gamer 2009 - Report!

Very well deserved for Contra, I'd been out of the WiiWare jist for a while, what a way to get back into it! Such a fun, explosive game, hah!
