Now that Alex has his mitts on the Switch OLED, we've got some lovely glossy footage of how it runs in comparison to the original Nintendo Switch, using the "infamous bottleneck" (his words) of Super Mario Odyssey's New Donk City.
If it's a comparison of the screens you're after, check out his other video; this one's specifically about seeing how the two run.
We've already heard that one Nintendo employee saying that the Switch OLED doesn't actually run any better, but check out the video if you want to make your own judgment. You can't trust anyone but your own peepers, after all.

Ah, you haven't found the secret button to unlock the performance yet?
@Skunkfish bro we gotta shake it, hit up up down down a b a b shake.
@Skunkfish It’s awfully hard to reach the deepest depths of your arse to be fair.
So the Nintendo Switch OLED which wasn't advertised as being faster, isn't actually faster.
Well, that is a surprise.
In other news the sky is blue.
1 + 1 = 2
Hmm, I guess the Switch OLED is exactly as advertised, and Nintendo isn't hiding something up their sleeves. No, they have to be releasing the 8K 120 FPS Super Switch Advance Pro X next week, or else they'll be Nintendoomed! There's no other way!
Gotta milk those OLED news NL!!!
Completely pointless. Nintendo has already confirmed the chipset is exactly the same as the previous Switch revision. Of course performance is going to be identical.
I mean the graphics look good. But we couldn’t get 1080p docked on a side scroller?
@Zuljaras Quality meme, my guy.
@Zuljaras Yeah that's pretty much this website today.
Why is everyone complaining? Shouldn’t you be off upgrading your Power Suits or something? Defeating E.M.M.I.?
@sanderev
But in a surprising twist, it's still faster than my day one switch, due to the mid system chip swap!
@ChromaticDracula probably beat the game already lol
@ObeseChihuahua2
I'd buy THAT switch!
Waluigi:
"Now you're playing with Powaaa"
How I feel too Waliuigi.
.
I was kinda hoping the wireless might have quietly gotten a speed bump, but oh well.
The animation looked slightly smoother on the right to me.
@nessisonett Speak for yourself
@Zuljaras Hahahaha! Perfect summary of Nintendolife! 👏🤣👍
@Zuljaras you're complaining that a Nintendo website is writing too much about a new Nintendo console on the day it launches? Hmm
Nintendo never advertised that the Switch OLED had better hardware. They only promoted the new screen and improved dock, that's it. You really expected it to be different from the old version performance wise Nintendolife?
@ChromaticDracula me and Emmi broke up, she tried to stab me….. multiple times
@KateGray
You could certainly be picking and choosing more logical material for these articles. Here's were you can blame your editor or something. We all know this is for the clicks, no need for you to come to the comment section and be condescending to your readers. We aren't dumb.
@KateGray Don't side with clickbait, it's a bad take.
Welp, new OLED is coming in next week for me don’t care much about performance as I do a nice, juicy screen size.
@ObeseChihuahua2
And they could have somehow explored the sound department instead, as it was advertised. Not much difference to me but still.
It uses the same soc as the lite. It will perform like the lite. We've known this for months.
@HedgehogEngine
@KateGray
And yet, we were all curious or bored enough to click on this and see for ourselves.
Why did you click, and then comment, if you really felt this was a waste of time?
@HedgehogEngine
If you're entertained, on a site for entertainment, their mission was accomplished.
: D
The first gen Switch uses a 20nm chip, the revision (red box) uses the Mariko chip which is a 16nm chip. The OLED Switch uses the same Mariko chip.
Typically, most company increases the clockspeed of their chip if they are manufactured with a lower nm process - this made the chip runs faster. Nintendo chose to have parity with the first gen, so by keeping the same clockspeed the new revision model runs cooler and therefore gained extra battery life.
It's up to Nintendo, they can easily change the clockspeed, allowing the Mariko chip to run faster at the expense of battery life. Maybe they will unlocked the clockspeed in future firmware? This will encourage OG Switch owner to upgrade.
People are so sensitive on this website 😂 Pretty harmless what this article is showing. I wouldn’t even call this clickbait and even so negative comments on it are not going to change it from happening everywhere on the internet. Just don’t click on the article in the first place.
@KateGray
Not really a new console. Your repeated analysis has proven that...ironically.
I was at my local gamestop in NJ today(10/08/21) and was asked if I wanted to upgrade to the new oled nintendo switch. I said I'd think about it. They stated that you must have everything that originally came in the box when you bought your system(including the original box). Upgrade pricing is $40. The new oled system is $350 and depending on how old your original system is, it really seems to be worth the $40 they charge you. I bought my system in early 2019. So if you have an original day one release, it's totally worth the $40 especially when that day one release has a battery thats over 4 years old by now.
@FightMikes she do be like dat tho 😂
@KateGray We're complaining because Nintendo explicitly stated there are no performance upgrades with the OLED Switch.
NLifes response? "Analysing The Performance Of The Switch OLED Versus The OG Switch"
Talk about unnecessary and tone deaf. 😒
@Folkloner
*Completely pointless for current Switch owners.
You have to consider the idea of those who are brand new to the Switch or those looking to get an upgrade from the Switch Lite.
Besides, Nintendo explained themselves that they aren't interested in changing the hardware, but rather improving what is currently accessed by everyone; a Switch Pro would change everything given exclusive games and ports.
@Zuljaras 😂😂 brilliant
@KateGray not complaining, just memeing
But since you asked I will not be surprised if the next article is "Can the OLED output 4K docked?".
@nessisonett Is that where high performance comes from?!
I just want to say that I'm not offended at all by this video or article!
Totally useless article since this were already confirmed.
So we’ve got people complaining that a Nintendo website has a lot of articles about Nintendo hardware?
Wow.
@HedgehogEngine
Money is how you pay for things. If a website like this doesn’t get advertising revenue it disappears.
Another wow moment here.
I approached the OLED as a visual upgrade and not a performance upgrade in the sense of faster internet or processor speed.
Why would someone be annoyed about an Alex video?
Y'all need to learn the difference between "clickbait" and "a regular title"
@KateGray and y'all need to try to remember how to stay classy and not respond in a petty manner - still, you're on point: one thing all NintendoLife staffers have in common is a tendency to react in a somewhat immature manner in the comments section. Anyway, don't you have an article on Brie Larson's opinion of the Oled Switch yet? That's clickbait gold right there.
For everyone claiming this is obvious, it's worth noting that, like any consumer product, Switch has evolved over its lifespan. This process was touched upon in Nintendo's recent developer interview about the OLED model, and how even common components change over time as production systems improve and evolve. There are numerous cases of consumer products (phones, tablets, TVs, cars) getting parts changed which result in different performance - even when the company which makes it doesn't advertise it as such.
While we've known that the chipset would be the same, other parts - such as memory - might also have changed, and this can sometimes lead to slight gains in terms of memory access speed and load times. So, we felt that this was worth putting to the test.
@sanderev
NOW you tell me the whole 1+1 thing...
Honestly I'm stunned Nintendo didn't call this a 'Legacy Edition' Switch in honour of the EA style hi-jinks of sprucing up the colours and shipping it out at top dollar
@Kilamanjaro
Hahahahaha this comment deserves a reward 😂
