Re: Sonic Mania’s Reception Will Determine the Direction of the Series

I am sorry to burst your bubble, but I think Forces will do far far better than Mania in terms of bringing the money in for SEGA.

I want Sonic to forget nostalgia and go full 3D again, like what Sonic Heroes did. I feel that the world needs a purely 3D Sonic with medium length levels, light combat and a good sense of momentum and speed. Sonic Heroes had the right idea with it's super challenging Super Hard mode which tested your platforming skill whilst still going relatively fast. You can actually skip large parts of the 3D levels if you're skilled enough.

I don't agree on the part that Sonic Team rushed this out to make money. This game had a very very long development cycle, and Sonic essentially skipped a game in the 25th anniversary simply because Forces was not ready. I think a lack of talent is this issue. Some people try the very hardest and still fail, like poor Waluigi....

There are two main problems with Sonic games. And the same problems that Alex mentioned here affected Sonic Colors, Unleashed, Lost World and Generations to a huge extent.

1. Automatic Sections.

Automatic sections have no place in platformers, but Sonic games like to force these automated sections down our throats. Sonic 4 was ESPECIALLY guilty of this. Count the amount of boost pads in the entire game a classic Sonic game, and then compare it to a modern level. What was once a satisfying reward just makes me groan.

2. Padding with bad 2D sections!

Yes, 2D sections in modern Sonic games are really really really bad. Much worse than the 3D sections. You can tell they put in so many because the 3D sections are expensive, difficult to make, and time consuming. The current formula simply cannot sustain a full game because of how EXPENSIVE it is to make a solid 3D level that will last long enough for Sonic to travel at high speed, so 2D sections make you grind to a halt and do imprecise platforming. This flaw affects every single Sonic game with the Boost formula, and it was horrible in Lost World.

@ThanosReXXX Custom engines are much better because of their low level access, meaing that developers can squeeze the most out of the target hardware. Look at Yoshi's Woolly World on a custom Good Feel engine vs the UE4 Yoshi.

Upscaling assets could work, if the developers make two sets of assets. One made for 4K/UHD systems like the Pro, and lower res ones for Switch.

Making a game tailored for systems that are higher end is not good for lower end systems like the Switch, because of CPU speed differences. If you directly port a PS4 game which uses 100% of CPU resources to Switch, it will literally run at 1/4 or less speed, if it even runs at all.

There is a reason why the CPU speed doesn't change when Switch is docked/undocked.

I think it's because the game was designed with the Xbox One as the lowest common denominator, and Switch is nowhere near Xbox One in terms of system power.

In order for third party support for Switch to really prosper, developers would need to make their game with the system in handheld mode as the lead platform, and then port up to Xbox One and PS4. Games like Ubisoft's Starlink and Bit Trip Runner 2 are already doing this, and Zelda was most likely tested more thoroughly in handheld mode.

I wonder what place Daisy came in. Probably 10th-15th if I would guess, but thankfully it is not representative of everyone.

As for the Inklings, screw them! Nintendo have a very bad tendency to put all of their focus on those characters ever since Splatoon became the #1 Wii U game in Japan...probably due to underaged reasons! I mean, version 3.0 added new character icons to the Switch, and they were all different Inklings! UGH!

Re: First Impressions: A New Style of Tactical Gaming in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

@Yosher That's very very easy for you to say, because Yoshi's playable in this game.

With very rare exceptions (3D World and NSMB), if a Mario game does not have Daisy in it, not even a reference, then I won't buy it. It's not that hard to do because there are lots of Mario games with Daisy in them. Mario Odyssey will even support her amiibo so I will be getting that.

I get excited for Mario and Sonic games because of the diverse range of sports and character roster. This game has a very limited character roster.

I think this is very much a real thing. Fakers would go out of their way to fool us, this doesn't. The DO NOT SHARE images are very very common in the industry, and prototypes often use generic bases. You really think it would take a few weeks to sand down and 3D print these four figures in a matter of days?

Ubisoft are also a leaky ship compared to Nintendo.
