Re: Project Sonic 2017 Confirmed for Nintendo NX Release

Even though I have a PC to play this on, something still feels off about this game not coming to Wii U.

I mean, the Hedgehog Engine runs great on the system, as we've seen with Lost World and the Olympic Titles, and this seems like the perfect game to cater to the Nintendo crowd. Maybe this game is running on a new engine that can't support Wii U?

At least we still have Rio 2016.

Yes, Pokemon GO is a cultural phenomenon, and I get that it's free to play and has Pokemon, whilst Mario and Sonic is £40 and is...another sports game.

But saying that Pokemon GO is the better game is just absurd, especially as there's no incentive to do anything at this point. It could really do with some good PvP, a fair bit of optimization, and better server capacity.

Meanwhile, Mario and Sonic has a suprising amount of depth in it's events, from Beach Volleyball's quick sets and dump shots to the physics in BMX, to even the several different types of shots and positioning in Table Tennis.

I honestly think no one is giving that game a fair chance due to an unfortunate bias against sports games as a whole.

Mario and Sonic Rio 2016: A great game, but judged because it is Mario and Sonic in another sports title. Reviewer didn't bother to get all the way through the game, and states false facts.
5/10

Pokemon GO: It's pretty much broken at the moment, but hey! It's Pokemon on mobile! 8/10

(For the record, I played both games)

Cool, Mario and Sonic Rio has a demo! I wonder what content/playable characters will be featured.

I have the full game already, and I'm loving it! I'll download the demo to see if it's a good representation of the full experience.

1. The gameplay styles of Mario and Sonic do not mesh well together, especially with Sonic's physics, boost mechanic, large multilayered levels, and momentum.

2. This is the best way for them to fit in as many loved characters as possible from each franchise with more or less equal roles, like Smash Bros. Daisy racing Amy in the 100m sprint? Can do!

@Mister_Wu It's £40 here, which is not cheap.

I agree with all of your points + the CPU being more challenging than previous games. There's no defending the pitiful excuse that is 4x100m relay though.

Also, Team Mario and Sonic characters will slowly, but surely be incorporated into Tournaments the more you progress. I had Jet suddenly challenge me in Duel Football at Level 2!

I think this review's score was overly harsh.

After playing the game for a good 20 hours now, I find this version to be the best entry in the franchise. Football and Duel Football are much more nuanced than the previous games, with team tactics coming into play this time (Offensive, Defensive, Side Attack, Center Attack), which are crucial. Also, lob shots, crosses, passes and Power Shots all feature.

I especially enjoyed the Duel Events, which are much more fully fleshed out than the 3DS version's Plus Events, and even most of the Dream Events from previous games. I still play Duel Rugby Sevens regulary.
