Re: Review: Minecraft (Switch)

CheapCheepBeach

I think the Bedrock Edition deserves a separate review from Nintendo Life. This new edition is almost completely unplayable if you even try to explore a little further from your house by boat in Survival Mode. It becomes even worse if you try to fly using the Elytra or normally in Creative Mode.

Re: GTA 6 On 'Switch 2' Would Be "Very Tricky To Pull Off", Says Digital Foundry

CheapCheepBeach

@Cikajovazmaj Why do you assume RT won’t be a minimum requirement in 2026? Big games are already starting to mandate SSD’s and even mesh shader capable graphics cards (excluding anything released before 2017 essentially). Rockstar aren’t obliged to support 10 year old hardware.

That said, I do think a Switch 2 port could be possible if the CPU is strong enough. We have seen PS5’s Hogwarts Legacy transfer over to Switch in a playable state, and the Switch 2 is rumored to have plenty of memory for games.

Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For Super Mario Bros. Wonder

CheapCheepBeach

@timp29 There has been one from WCCFTech.

"If I have any concerns about Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s that while course designs and their Wonder Flower remixes are very creative, the basic underlying platforming in many stages has been rather simple. I hope the game delivers some satisfying, skill-testing platforming challenges in addition to all the wild razzle-dazzle."

Re: Random: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Sunset Wilds Is Missing One Key Thing

CheapCheepBeach

@Brianst0rm Mario Kart 8 is presumably one of the earliest forms of the engine. It's very possible that dynamic time of day just didn't exist in the engine back then; none of the original Splatoon's maps had a day and night cycle.

Backporting the feature to 8DX could have been possible but would have taken considerable work just for a single track, and the team may have not thought it was worth it.

Then again, half-pipes weren't implemented in the MK7 gameplay engine until a whole year post Tour's release, and were subsequently ported to 8.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Mario Kart Game?

CheapCheepBeach

There are some mechanical changes between 8 and 8 Deluxe that are worth mentioning.

The original Mario Kart 8 had a tougher grand prix mode thanks to better bots, different item distributions, altered vehicle balance and more. I can see why someone would want to go back to that version over Deluxe.

The SNES and N64 versions were not very good. Double Dash was the first Mario Kart that had the polish and refinement you would expect out of this series today.

Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

CheapCheepBeach

I heard someone said that the purchase rate of old games is really really low, low enough for Nintendo to think that going through with getting the rights and getting them rated for release isn’t worth it. It’s also why I think Super Mario 3D All Stars was a limited release digitally.

Third parties also manage their own re releases. It’s just more profitable to sell a collection of games as a sort of new release to get people excited for purchasing them.

Re: Feature: Zooming Through Sonic Colors: Ultimate And Getting The Switch Lowdown

CheapCheepBeach

@scannerdarkly7 Sonic Colors on Wii was one of the most demanding games on Wii with dense environments with a lot of geometry and many flashy visual effects that aren’t friendly to the Switch’s processor and memory bandwidth. It also had to be rebuilt for Switch using standard programmable shaders - Wii had specialised hardware that handled Colors’ shaders and effects. It would have been difficult to get a game like this running at 60 at all on Switch - no 60FPS game on Switch stands out to me as more dense aside from Mario Kart 8

Re: Video: Are 2D Games Worth $60? Jon, Alex And Zion Share Their Own Thoughts

CheapCheepBeach

A game should be full price only if it is obvious that it is of a high budget, with significant money and time put into it. No obvious shortcuts taken that dampen the experience, like poor audio or visual quality, weak level design due to a lack of budget, or cheap recycled stock voice clips because you couldn’t bother to record new voices. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 set the standard for what customers should expect from a full priced game.

I consider a game like Sonic Unleashed to be worth full price because it has high production values and a good amount of content. Ratchet is £70 but it’s undeniable that Insomniac went all in on the production quality with cutting edge visuals and yes, high quality 3D environments.

A game like Mario Golf COULD be worth full price (I think World Tour and Toadstool Tour are worth full price) but Super Rush has such obvious cut corners and a low budget that i feel like it should be a discounted release. If Mario Sports games are going to be £70 in the future then Nintendo should start giving the games bigger development teams and more funding...MUCH more funding.

As for Metroid...the 2D perspective dampens it’s value as 2D games are simply easier to make than 3D games and are more plentiful. They did nice work on the presentation though, better than Super Rush.

Re: Nintendo Has Released A Day-One Update For Mario Golf: Super Rush

CheapCheepBeach

Some of these changes sound pretty major. Approach Practice, Putt Challenge and Tee Shot are modes that were in pretty much every Mario Golf game before this one, but they only added it in the day one patch?

The patch also changes the art you see on the Battle Mode jumbotrons. Before they were reused art from other Mario games.

Re: Rumour: Evidence Of A "New" Nintendo Switch Dock Supposedly Datamined In System Update 12.0.0

CheapCheepBeach

@Kirgo DLSS DOES cost performance. The system needs to perform the calculations to reconstruct the image rather than simply upscaling it. It's more intensive than just rendering a game at 1080p and doing a basic upscale to 4K. Or even just using temporal anti aliasing upsampling to reconstruct 1080p to 4K. You need more processing power.

It also needs to be added in and tweaked manually by the developers, older games won't get this technology unless they are updated.

I think Nintendo and developers won't aim for native 4K resolution unless the game is 2D or very light on the GPU, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is (even this game I doubt - maybe it will be updated to something like 1800p?).

Re: EA Acquires Racing Game Specialist Codemasters

CheapCheepBeach

EA aren't too bad these days. Their games aside from FIFA and NBA have been great value for money, and they are creating original titles for Switch and other platforms - with one literally announced this direct. They've been a big supporter of crossplay and are releasing Apex Legends on Switch.

I would even say that they are less greedy than Nintendo themselves are.

Re: Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Hits Nintendo Switch This March

CheapCheepBeach

I don't think they are telling the truth about the resolution to be perfectly honest. Crash was 900p and an unstable 30-40fps on the Xbox One S, and we know that Unreal 4 is a heavy engine that pushes console graphics cards. Considering that the game doesn't have reworked assets on Switch. I think the game will actually end up being 720p docked and 480p handheld, with handheld having reduced settings such as no motion blur or anti aliasing - if we go by Spyro Reignited Trilogy which ran on the same engine.

Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury amiibo Functionality Detailed

CheapCheepBeach

The Super Mario characters (including Smash Bros Piranha Plant) give you a Super Star, not a 1-UP Mushroom. It is NOT random.

Cat Peach gives you a random powerup but it’s not like the other amiibo, she can give you a Tanooki Flower or a Cat Suit or a Boomerang Suit etc.

Nintendo’s site even details it all here.
